For this review I have decided to compare 'Virtua Tennis 2009' (VT09) to two other similar games - the original virtua tennis game from ages ago (VT), and my personal favourite tennis game, Dream Match Tennis Pro (DMTP).GraphicsVT - er... quite good... when it came out, and that was a long time ago. However it does have some pretty nice animations (i.e. linesmen calls, the crowds heads moving, ball boys etc.)DMTP - Graphics very similar to VT, so not amazing. Lacks the animations of VT, only the head of the umpire moves, and nothing else other than the players. Also has no cutscenes between points.VT09 - Virtua tennis 2009 has certainly got the better graphics, but by 2009 standards they aren't very good.All the animations are still there, but they did get rid of the dive shots, which I thought worked really well with the arcade style of the game.Conclusion - Pretty much a clean swipe for VT09. Not much competitionsReview Points - VT09 - 5, VT - 3, DMTP - 1SoundVT09 - Where do I start. Virtua tennis 2009's sounds are well recorded, but not much else. The umpire sound is the same, boring, American voice for every point at every location. If the ball is (rarely) hit out it is the umpire that calls the ball out. How does that fit with realism? Also the crowd. Atmosphere is one of the key points that Sega made about this game. 'Good' atmosphere does NOT mean that all of a sudden, mid rally, the crowd starts talking. I'll leave you to make up your mindVT - Very good, although it doesn't create the same atmosphere that VT2009 (excluding the talking in points). The umpire calls are excellent - although it is normally the same voice, it isn't as dull as the VT09 one. And, on the french tournament, the umpire speaks in french! Great.DMTP - My version of DMTP is slightly modded, so I'm not sure how accurate this is. The crowd sounds are fantastic, they make different noises depending on how good, or skilled, the point was. For example, if you have a 200 shot rally (which you get) and then someone hits the line with a winner, the crowd will go crazy. If you have a three shot rally, with an unforced error after that, it remains almost silent. The umpire noises are terrible, but they did a proper recording of 'game set and match'. I love that part, i turn the sound up every time its match point. The line calls are the best in any of the games, but they should be, because its the only game they are (really) needed.Conclusion - Toss up between VT and DMTP. I'll go with DMTP because it has better atmosphere and an awesome game set and match call.Review Points - DMTP - 5, VT - 4, VT09 -1Gameplay - the key partVT and VT09 - nothings changed. VT has two available shots (normal, lob), VT09 has three (topspin, slice, lob). In both games I find it absolutely impossible to hit an unforced error. Although this leads to amazing rallies (more of them in VT) it is a 'little' bit unrealistic. Also, it seams unable to hit wide shots. Don't know why, but that is a big let down.DMTP - Gameplay is DMTP's main strength. You have to run to the ball (of course), but instead of telling the player when to start preparing for a shot, you tell him when to hit it. This means that the ball is controlled either with the timing or the arrow keys, instead of just the arrow keys. This makes the game for more challenging, but much more rewarding when you hit the line.Conclusion - DMTP floats on gameplay.Review points - DMTP - 5, VT -3, VT09 - 3World tour/ career modeOverall - the objective of this mode is the same across all the games - become the world no.1.VT - Classic arcade game. Tournaments are available all the time, and are level based. You need to win matches to rise in the rankings, if you win all the levels for a tournament, you get it's trophy.VT09 - Sega go more for realism here, but not much more. The game is based around a 48 week year, in which tournaments are scheduled every couple of weeks. There is an amateur ranking set (of 100 players), and a pro set of 150 players. You need to get to the top of the amateur set to rise to the pro set. Tournaments are only available based on your ranking, for example you need to be world no. 50 to enter some tournaments. All tournaments start in the quarter finals, and the difficulty is not determined by your opponent, but by the tournament. Getting through it is a long and tedious process.DMTP - Full realism. 128 players on the tour, four grand slams, four masters, six other tournaments. There are 128 players in the draw for the grand slams, 64 for the masters and 32 in the other tournaments. The difficulty is determined by the player you are against, rather than the tournament or level. Rankings are points based, and you can easily see how many points you have and how far behind everyone else you are.Conclusion - DMTP all the wayReview points - DMTP 5, VT 2, VT09 2.Totals:Dream Match Tennis Pro - 16Virtua Tennis - 12Virtua Tennis 2009 - 11Conclusion - VT09 is distinctly average, and compared to much older predecessors of the game nothing like as good. Say well clear, and with mods for DMTP you can get the graphics as good as VT09, so why pay more for a worse game?

I'm a veteran of Virtua Tennis on the PC, and was hoping this upgrade was going to be worthwhile. Boy was I wrong. The main part of the game is the World Tour, where you pit your wits against opponents from around the world and progress up the ranking ladder. The problem is that the computer opponents you face are so utterly, ridiculously easy to beat that you will barely lose more than one or two points across the two hundred or so matches that you will need to complete to gain access to the pro ranks. This is absolutely pathetic, and the developers ought to be ashamed of themselves - what fun is there in the endless procession of stupidly easy games?There has also been no improvement in the amount of control you get over the game.All the matches in World Tour mode are three games only, and there is no way of changing this - perhaps mercifully, due to the easiness of beating the opponents, but it would be nice to have the option.Coupled with some sound glitches and the fact that the developers appear to have made no effort at all to disguise the fact that this is a direct port of the console version of the game (there's even a message telling you not to remove your cartridge from the save slot, or something along those lines, during the game) and this has to be one to avoid.There are, however, enough touches to make this an occasional bit of fun, though there needs to be more control over the placement of the ball...so far in over 200 matches I have never had a ball be called "out". It would increase the tension and make things more a matter of judgement if you could overcook your shots a bit.For the next release, the developers really need to make some effort, and not just churn out another version of this serial title without putting any time into it other than making the graphics look a bit prettier.

Okay. VT2009 looked great from the adverts and reviews released before the game. However, I feel they poorly portrayed the game. I was really expecting something great from this new release. New players, better graphics, better game play. Realistically, in career mode I am faced with simple opponents, only advancing one or two places in the rankings when winning a tournament. You end up playing pointless matches over and over again to reach some form of decent opposition.Furthermore, the minimum system requirements are rather high ; 2.8 ghz dual core processor, 1 gb ram, nvidia 6600 graphics with the recommended only likely to be achieved by those with high-spec PCs. On my PC running a Quad Core processor (3.2 ghz),8 gb ram, nvidia 9600 graphics the game runs choppy (although this may be solved by a later patch).In terms of game-play VT2009 is still enjoyable. However, if you have played VT3 you will soon be put off by the recycled grunts for the new players (i.e. making exactly the same sound as other characters), the mispronunciation of player names and the poor quality sound effects (e.g. ball bounce and player movement). One more thing that has bugged me since VT2 is the removal of Serena Williams, I still do not see the point in having a tennis game with one sister and not the other. To conclude, the game still plays similar to VT3 and it is therefore enjoyable, especially in exhibition mode. On the other hand, several areas still need improving if the game is to be ranked higher than VT3.
