This is a good vacuum cleaner, There is some assembly required once it is received but this is as simple as placing the handle (which double up as the extension pole) into the top of the machine. The pole can be adjusted at the base to extend upwards to make it more comfortable for taller people using it. Then remove some cardboard from between the cylinder and the brush. Then you just add on the spare heads, a long thin extension a brush (assuming this is for dog hair) and one for the sofa. There is also an extension tube which attaches to the side of the machine for use with the attachments. This is very light, weighing in at just over 5 kilo's.This weight makes it ideal for using on the stairs and makes it very easy to pick up and move round the place, although as I am a big guy I may not be the best person to comment on this but if you can lift 5 bags of sugar you will be fine with this. The reach of the power cable is great at 17 metres long and the length of my house taken into account I don't need to change the socket while doing all the downstairs rooms and same again for the upstairs. The performance of this does vary a little though so first we need to mention the brush bar at the front. There is a slide which lowers and raises the brush head depending if its hard floors (lowers the brush) or carpet pile (raised the head) selecting these when hoovering is essential to make sure the brush is working with you. The brush like most uprights has the bristles moving towards the suction end passing dirt through this way.The brush on this machine can be moved by pushing the upright manually, or you use the mechanised brush by pushing the button under the power button. I found this helpful on all surfaces but especially the vinyl flooring as it swept the floor better. On carpet it manages to pick most things up, the odd thread of cotton usually getting stuck on the bristles but that's to be expected. What you will notice is this is a very powerful motor coming in at 950W in a very light machine, this does mean it is loud and has a higher pitch to it than some other machines. However it is no louder than other machines, the power though can be an issue. My current vacuum can vary the power output of the motor, this is very useful on the landing carpet which is a little old and has been in the house before I was. With the Vax I struggled with this carpet as it kept lifting the carpet itself, it was a little easier with the brush spinning but still was lifting the carpet. Without the ability to turn down the power this is a problem.Another slight annoyance is that it locks itself back into the upright position a bit too easy, you can be manoeuvring a corner lift it a bit and it snaps back into position. I am sure this will wear off in time with using as you become more accustomed to the point where it will click.Using the extension pole is quite simple and has been engineered well, detach the hose from the bottom, using the orange clip, attach this to the extension tube (which attaches to the side next to the lead) and then add the extension nozzle of your choice. The metal end can extend so helping reach the hard to access places. Due to the power in the machine these attachments work very well. Other attachments are available but at extra cost. The attachments click in very nicely and are well designed, spring loaded and not requiring much force to open and close.Emptying this is, as you would expect quite simple, push the unlock button and then left by the handle when over the bin release the bottom of the container and that's it empty. Further maintenance is also very simple, jobs like cleaning the motor filter takes only a few minutes. There is also a 6 year warranty included which is very good value for money and shows the confidence Vax has that this will be a durable machine lasting many years. So in summaryPositive- Very light and easy to carry round- Good for cleaning almost all surfaces- Long cable- Powerful motor- Very good reach for using attachments- 6 year warrantyNegative- Needs the ability to adjust the power of the machine- Snaps back into the upright position to easilyIf this had the ability to vary the power output of the motor I would have given it 5*, but apart from this issue this is a good vacuum in all other respects.

I have been using a Vax cordless vacuum cleaner for the past year so it has been interesting to compare it with this one. Once everything is removed from the box it all clicks together easily. This Vax, whilst light enough to lift with one hand is quite a bit heavier than the cordless. It doesn't have the manoeuvrability of the cordless, which has a swivel head, but it really shows my carpets it means Business. It seems more powerful and definitely has greater suction; it also has an air vent with which to alter the suction depending on which type of floor you are cleaning. The cordless doesn't have this. The very generous cord is a real boon; although I now live in a very small bungalow I can vacuum the floors from one end to the other without having to plug and unplug (this is what I love about the cordless model). I can't comment on how efficiently it cleans stairs, but I tried it with the extension hose on the tops of my curtains and around the corners of the rooms where cobwebs lurk and have to say it is great. I also gave my furniture a treat and, using the appropriate crevice tool, it did a brilliant job of devouring dust and stray crumbs. It works just as well on wooden and tiled floors as it does on carpet – just press the brush on/brush off button located next to the On/Off button according to floor type. The handle height is adjustable and the usual Press With Foot and Tilt action is all that's needed to release the upright part from the brush head. The handle can be removed altogether which makes storage easier if required.Emptying the dirt canister is a breeze – one press of a button removes the canister, and other releases the bottom of it, preferably over a bin on a not too windy day.The cleaning tools – three on this model – all click together and fit neatly on the back of the machine. Be careful when you release the tools from each other as they can go with a sudden snap, taking a thumbnail along for the ride. I speak from experience. That very long cord I referred to earlier has to be manually wound onto the back of the machine. I have had vacuum cleaners with a retractable cord, which are great when they work, but once they stop working, what the heck do you do with it? So, whilst winding the cord can be a pain in the rear end, I think in the long run it's better. This comes with an easy to understand instruction manual, a set of three cleaning tools plus extension hose, all of which are stored on the machine, and a whopping 6 year guarantee! If I have one criticism it's that I find the various release buttons somewhat small and difficult to click into place. Other than that this is an excellent machine with efficient and effective cleaning power.

The first noticeable thing about this vacuum cleaner, is how lightweight it is - much easier to carry around than most other current uprights. It is A for efficiency, using 23.6 kilowatts per annum apparently (although the label doesn't say how much floorspace you clean for that!). The noise level is 86 decibels, slightly higher than my old cleaner, but still reasonable. The suction is powerful too - and it cleans deep carpets effectively. But I am on a search for the ideal vacuum cleaner; this is a step in the right direction, but still not quite there for me. The niggles? Well, the push point for allowing the handle section to tilt back in upright cleaning is at the front rather than the back. That's ok - just a little odd, and not as intuitive. Then there is the hose. What I want, is a vacuum that cleans the entire stair with the hose - because that is distinctly safer. This is an improvement - the hose stretches up the 10 steps to the turn point - but no further (or at least not with the strength I can reasonably apply). Then there is the attachment. The vac comes with a small 3 in 1 attachment, which I found (having 3 cats) became blocked quickly, and was very short, so I had to bend over. I would like a longer end. The bizarre thing, is that with only a slight alteration to the end of the handle - this could have been used. But as it is, what would be a very neat solution, is prevented by the simple fact that the open end to the handle is slightly too wide to fit.So in summary, this is an improvement on my old vacuum. The hose stretches further (reducing the chance of a fall on the stairs), and it is powerful without being too noisy or losing energy rating. This is clearly why it is the current Which? Best Buy vacuum cleaner. It is also lighter, and therefore easier to move around. But in my view, you need to get the extra accessories - which adds to the price. That is disappointing. The longer reach nozzle to help on stairs should have been included in the main vacuum cleaner; or the handle adapted to enable use (which would make the machine a far better design). I'd also like to see a consideration of putting a push button on the top part or handle to enable the release of the lock for upright vacuuming - which would again reduce the chance of falls in those at risk. This is a good vacuum cleaner, and it is the best I have tried so far (range includes Dyson and Hoover) - on the grounds of efficiency and safety. But it doesn't yet tick the box of the vacuum cleaner I want to see on the market, one which would be both efficient, and significantly improve home safety.

Be assured that this is a well built, mid size vacuum, suitable for smaller homes or folk who prefer a light to lift, easy to use, straightforward click on and off bagless vacuum. We took delivery of it just after we had thoroughly hoovered the house with our Henry. Surprisingly, when we thought all was done and dusted, there were still several containers full of fluff, dust and fur collected by the VAX. That was satisfying to see. It's not super quiet, when working it emits a reasonable level of 'I'm busy' humming. I liked the simplicity of the tool connection, the 17m cord, the super slinky style hose stretchiness and the immediacy of its usefulness. I didn't even need to read the book. There is a light to show you are using the power brush. Sometimes there will be an 'unexpected item in the (brush) area' , which is easy to clear away. The tools stay on as you move it about, the dust bucket is simple to empty. When you are using the extension lead it doesn't tow along, you leave the vacuum standing, learn to rely on the huge range of the hose. There is an adjustable handle, totally easy and tidy cord stowage even with that 17 m cord. You get the brush bar whirring away by pressing the button next to the on off switch.I like the lightness, the simplicity and the power it still manages to produce. The sliding selector for floor type is easy to operate and makes a huge difference to the suction, which is extraordinarily effective. A new vacuum cleaner is always better than an old one, somehow, I know but this one does seem to be a big improvement on traditional ones and a strong competitor to the Dyson. It really does work straight out of the box and delivers superb cleaning without strain or stress. This weekend I lent it to my son and his family and this is what they had to say:" The Vax vacuum cleaner was a revelation – it gripped our carpets mercilessly (even after I figured out how to change the setting for different surfaces), and at the first pass it pulled up an embarrassing and graphic quantity of dust, rather than just the general rubbish which Henry hoover does manage to pick up. Some of the dust might have pre-dated our arrival in the house. As a result our humble carpets have changed colour, as if they have in fact had a traditional Vax shampoo and wash. They even feel completely different underfoot. It’s definitely the only vacuum cleaner we now want and are glad that it doesn’t take up much space. It also empties easily and quickly. Hopefully after the shameful first session we can just do little and often from now on."....

The big selling point with this vacuum cleaner appears to be that it has an extremely long reach. The 17 metres it quotes is the distance from the plug to the nozzle at the end of the hose at full stretch. The hose with nozzle attachment is more like four metres. You can, if you have a standard sized house, probably vacuum the whole of every room on one floor without ever having to unplug which may be very useful to you if you have an alarmingly large room or very few sockets. If you have an ordinary sized house you do get a bit tired of all the spare flex getting in the way when you vacuum. The extra long hose allows the end of the nozzle to reach the top of a set of stairs with the vacuum cleaner at the bottom but the angle is wrong for cleaning the top few steps. You could do better if you left the cleaner at the top and reached down but there is always the fear that you will topple the cleaner on to your head. We found it useful for about two thirds of the stairs but then you have to move the cleaner up. This is still a lot better than many other vacuum cleaners we have had.The cleaner is light and looks good. The pieces slot together well with nice loud clicks and everything is easy to attach and detach again. The hose nozzle is actually the handle which means that there is somewhere to store it and it is always readily to hand. We were disappointed, however, that there was no upholstery brush. This vacuum cleans very well. we were very impressed. The floor unit is small and easy to manoeuvre into corners - we used the nozzle attachment less on the edges of carpets than usual and definitely more on cobwebs and things usually out of reach. A slide knob on the front of the floor unit lessens or strengthened the suck which was useful on different types of carpet. We did find that with a strong suck the effort of moving the vacuum was such that we twisted the handle loose - we did this frequently until we used less suck. The vacuum also has a great feature in that the carpet brushes don't go round when you are using the nozzle or when the vacuum is standing still which also makes it a lot quieter on those occasions. In fact, it is quieter than any other vacuum we have used. All in all this is a reasonably small, very effective cleaner with a long reach and adjustable suck.

The first things that stood out to me when I received this Vax Air Stretch upright cleaner was the 'Best Buy - Which? - Vacuum Cleaners April 2015' Logo on four sides of the box, obviously a great boast and an appealing draw to consumers looking at the box on a retail shelf. Also highly featured on the box in the long reach '17m Reach - Long cord and hose' There is a great image on three side on the box showing the hose comfortably reaching to the top of a flight of stairs. Upon first impressions looking at the neat and compact box I was pretty impressed knowing it was an award winner and the fact it could complete one of the most annoying tasks - the stairs!!!.Combine these stand out features with a 6 year guarantee and a price point which is at least three times less than a Dyson and you should be onto a winner, if it performs!Out of the box I don't think it’s the best looking vacuum I’ve seen but it is really functional, lightweight and a good size. The extension hose, 3-in-1 tool and cable all have a neat home storing securely in place on the back of the main unit.In use it manuvers really well, picks up well tight up to the skirting boards it’s also very easy to switch from a floor upright to use the hose. So onto the biggest boast on the box does it really clean to the top of a flight of stairs? I happy to say that the hose has plenty of elasticity stretching well and pulling back into place without too much resistance, the suction is great and constant even when the hose is at full length, the top two steps are a bit of a challenge the hose doesn't quite have the length which leaves you at the wrong angle to do a proper job. Pulling the hose too far beyond its reach ends up lifting the vacuum and if you’re not careful it could tip it over in use. This niggle aside I was left with 11 easy to clean stairs and two which were more of a challenge but could be tackled from above. The stand out improvement I would want from this vacuum is another attachment tool; the last vacuum I owned had a flat and wide attachment especially for sofas. The 3-in-1 tool with this just doesn't to what I want. Now neatly stored away in our top landing cupboard I think for the price point, 6 year warranty and impressive performance its worthy contender.

I've had a few Vax cleaners in the past and been impressed. I wa sinterested to see how this compared. The 'Mach Air' range is designed to be lightweight - and it is. My Mother-in-law struggled with her massive ancient Samsung vacuum, but this takes up less space and is far easier to manouvre. For a start is has a 'proper' handle - it's amazing how many vacuum cleaners these days have a thick plastic 'stub' to hold! In fact, it is very well designed from an ergonomics point of view. The power button is at the top rather than on the base, and a simple push mechanism allows you to adjust the handle height.I'm over six feet tall and this doesn't give me back ache.A lot of thought has gone into the general operation of this Vax: The brush bar can be switched off at the press of a button (conveniently placed next to the power button) so that it can be used on hard floors without the risk of scratching. Easy clips on the base allow access to the brushbar to be accessed in case of any entanglements (happens regularly in my house when I pick up a carpet thread), and the dust compartment is detached within seconds so that it can then be emptied into the bin. This machine is advertised as light-weight, and although you're not going to be picking it up with one finger - it's definitively a lot lighter than the other vacuums I've had. At first I thought it looked a bit puny, but the small form means that the brushbar can get right up to the edge, and wherever it can't reach - the onboard tools can.As well as this you may want to consider the older version which was actually more powerful - the "Vax U91-MA-B Air Multicyclonic Upright Bagless Vacuum Cleaner" but otherwise pretty much the same.In a nutshell: A well thought out vacuum cleaner which looks pretty snazzy too. The dust bucket is pretty small so you might find yourself emptying it more regularly than other models. But it's a fine trade-off for a smaller, lighter cleaner which is easily stored. This is incredibly easy to use and the only assembly it needs out-of-the-box is sticking the handle into the main body. There are more powerful models in the market - but this fits a niche and after having a few small vacuum cleaners over the years - this easily out-performs them all.

Ive been using this product for the last year and have overall found it very good for the cost.It is very lightweight and compact so hides away at the back of my cupboard with no issue. The flex is long enough that I can do my entire flat from a plug in the hallway. The flex is held simply at the rear by winding it around a couple of fixed points so there is no need to worry about an automatic retractor failing. There are two modes that you can choose from, hard floor or carpet. This is selected with a simple slider on the head of the unit. You are also able to control if the brush spins with a simple press of the button next to where the power is located just above the bin.In use it is very powerful and easy to use due to its weight. As other reviewers have said you do have to remove the tube from the base and attach the extension (located on the side) before attaching the accessory in order to clean corners etc. I do not find this a particular issue, the item is designed to be lightweight and relatively cheap. To input a sophisticated system would only, in my opinion, increase weight and price.Emptying the device is simple, press a button to detach the dirt bin, place this over the rubbish bin and press a second button to release the dirt. The bin does not hold a great deal of dirt because of its small size but where it is so simple to empty this is not an issue. As with all modern vacuum cleaners some routine maintenance is a good idea to prevent a loss of suction. It is simple to access the filter which needs a wash in cold water and drying for 24 hours before being popped back in. With that being said I have only done this once and it still seems to be going strong.Overall I would recommend this cleaner. For the price you get a lightweight, upright vacuum cleaner with excellent suction.

We have had Vax machines before - two carpet cleaners and a small vacuum cleaner. They tend to be well put together, and this is too. Quite lightweight and easy to lift and store. It has a pretty small footprint so tucks neatly into the corner of our pantry. In use it has good, but not exceptional suction. That may be to do with the new EU rules on noise from domestic appliances, as our noisier Panasonic is better but probably not EU compliant. The power cord is huge! Almost as long as my extension cable for DIY. In fact it could do with being a bit shorter as the coils keep falling off the lugs at the back. The stretchy bendy hose also goes quite a long way but being that stretchy I do wonder whether it will lose its springiness over time.It is too early to tell as I write this review. There is only one accessory tool and that is lightly clipped to the back of the machine inbetween the cable coils. It is ok, but maybe not as good as you get with other bits of kit.In terms of performance, it has happily picked up cat fluff, regular dust and muck, and seems to leave carpets lifted by the brush. Hard floor are a doddle too. The cylinder is easy to detach and empty, and at the moment I can't see anywhere that needs to be cleaned on the machine but may be inaccessible. Some of the Vax carpet shampoo machines have areas which get clogged but can't be accessed, leading to work-arounds with bits of wire, so I was worried this could be the same.Is it a "Best Buy" in my book? I'm afraid not. It is a super little vacuum cleaner, and for someone who can't lift anything too heavy it would be perfect, but when we ran the Panasonic over carpet that we'd Vax'd, there was more dust and muck picked up. Not enough to ditch it, but one star off for that.

As a Dyson fan, I wasn't sure if I would get along with the Vax. I'm happy to report that we're getting along fine!Out of the box, there is a little assembly to be done. I struggled a little with the instructions, which were not super clear; but by following intuition and the picture on the box, I got there in the end!The overall feel of the Vax is lightweight, but sturdy. Not super tough, so no throwing it about! It is easy to manoeuvre around furniture and skirting. The cord is an excellent long length, so no need to unplug halfway round! (Note the cord is not self winding - manual wrap around 2 fixing points on the back of the machine. A little annoying).Suction wise - really good. You have the option to have the beater bar on or off, so switching between floors is easy. The suction is not variable, but powerful enough to cope with dried mud from inconsiderate feet, or dropped food, and pet hairs. The edge cleaning is not the best, but this is where the extendable hose and tools come in.Again, it took a little figuring out (the hose attaches to the base rather than the top, and the handle is then removed to attach to the hose) but the reach is tremendous. Goodbye cobwebs on high ceilings! It makes stairs a nice easy job. The add on tools are a small brush, a clothes brush pad, and a crevice tool. They interlink to store on the back, and need to be undone and switched around for use. Again, the instructions were not the most helpful - intuition needed! These tools then make edge cleaning much easier.Lastly, the Vax has an average size capacity for fluff and dust. I just find it easier to empty after every use anyway so not a problem.I like this Vax very much. It's a good performer, reliable and compact. Recommended.

This Vax comes highly recommended with a well known company endorsement for 'suction'. The unit is small and light and was easy to 'set up' once unboxed. If I had a slight criticism it would be I don't like the extension hose procedure - I don't know why but it just seems an odd way to put it together and it frustrates me having to do it that way. Once done the range of the hose is very good. In terms of suction I have to say I haven't been overly impressed. I feel its under performing in comparison to my old vacuum cleaner. Perhaps its because its so quiet - which it is. But I've actually tested it by throwing some lentils on the carpet to see how it did.It got them all but it took several passes and I just expected more from a product so highly regarded. There is no doubt that this lightweight, relatively quiet and quite small vacuum has its plus points. If you won't something that won't take up too much space in the cupboard or isn't hard to move around or pick up, this is certainly well worth considering. I am not sold on the extension hose design, it only involves moving the tube from one place to another but I just don't like it - a personal gripe and I am sure many won't mind it. I am still not overly sure it is as good at picking up as previous vacuum cleaners I have had but it does get the job done in the end. All of this and an 'A' rated appliance to boot you have a competitive product. Considering all of the these things together, I think this is a cleaner worthy of your consideration. All in all its very good.

With Cordless Vacuums so hyped and all over the media these days it was interesting to try a more traditional plug-in model and overall this U85 did very well in a comparison. The fundamental design is very similar to a Cordless and it manages to weigh in at just under 5kg which if not exactly light is pretty manageable. Where it really scores over my Vax cordless is suction which is greatly superior giving enhanced cleaning power on both carpets and hard surfaces in most cases without the need to change settings-the difference is revelatory. It is also a joy to be able to do a really good session of hoovering without worrying that your battery is about to die on you after 30 or 40 minutes. The hose is longish, but may not be sufficient to clean to the top of a steep staircase. The cable truly is 17 metres allowing you to do the whole of the floor of a house without the need to change sockets although you have to spend a minute or two carefully winding it back into position on the hook provided after use. The other issue here is that you must be very careful to keep the cable away from the head of the device otherwise you could easily do some serious damage. The cylinder empties very easily, there is a useful light on the head for dark corners and the overall impression is of high performance, well designed machine which is easy and effective to use. Recommended particularly to people who are wondering whether to buy a Cordless or an Upright-the better cleaning performance clinches the crown for the latter.

I received this today and myself and my other half thought it was so fantastic we wanted to leave a review straight away! We paid a very reasonable price for it so was a bit sceptical but it did not disappoint. First of all it was fairly quiet which was a bonus with having a young child around, the cable was super long and- although I haven't tried- I am fairly certain I could hoover my whole 2 bedroom house without needing to relocate plug sockets. Now I am a big fan of cylinder vacuums as the spinning brushes that normally come on uprights do not get on well with me but what I love most about this is I can turn them off! My other half loves the spinning brushes so he has them turned on,win win for both of us. I'm struggling to find a bad point to make about it, the only thing I have noticed so far is the handle feels a little cheap and plasticy and rubs my hand a bit if I use it for a long period of time but I enjoy (yes I said it, enjoy vacuuming!) using it so I can see past this. Another problem I had with vacuums before is they would be so powerful I would struggle to move it around on carpet but this has a neat little switch vent on the bottom that you can change and it lets the air circulate a bit more to help with the movement. It advertises that it is really lightweight which although its not really heavy after a while it does start aching my arm. Lastly, delivery was also fantastic. I really cannot fault this product, I would recommend this to anyone, it is a great hoover!

We've never had a Vax vacuum before, so were looking forward to seeing what this was like compared to other upright ones that we've had in the past. We'd heard good things about Vax through, so expectations were high. The first thing we discovered on unpacking is that the vacuum is very light indeed - certainly a lot lighter than the variety of Dysons we have had previously. Despite this, however, it seems to be as efficient (if not more so) in terms of the actual vacuuming. Having now used several times, the carpets just look cleaner than they did when using our old vacuum; there's an obvious visual difference that just makes everything look better. Capacity of the vacuum is good, and there's not yet been any blockages or times when we've had to open up the bottom to see what is caught. The main selling point of this vacuum, other than that it is fairly lightweight, is meant to be its reach. This is claimed to be 17m (over 50ft). I'm not sure about this, but the cord really is very very long indeed; when plugged in in our kitchen, we just about managed to hoover the dining room and stairs as well (which is quite a distance). In fact vacuuming on stairs is great, given how light the vacuum is, and the long cord. All in all we are really impressed with this, and I can't help but wish that we had got a Vax sooner. A good quality hoover that is lightweight, good at what it does, and with a very long reach. Definitely recommended.

I was really pleasantly surprised and pleased with this hoover, I was worried that with the EU rules about wattage that it wouldn't provide the suction that I needed but this was not the case. It is not too heavy to push or lift making it easy to use and move around to different rooms in the house.I liked that the tools and extension hose neatly stored inside each other and onto the machine so that they don't get lost or take up extra spaceAs someone who has a what seems like forever molting dog I was really pleased with the machines ability to lift the hair out of the carpet which is something that my old machine had real problems doing.I can now feel much more of that clean carpet bounce! The extra cord length is fantastic for being able to cover a lot more floor space without the need to unplug and move the machine to a different plug and the hose extension makes the tricky job of the stairs a lot easier. If I was to be picky I would say that even though the flex was long enough with it being a twin core flat flex it could be prone to twisting which could lead to snapping in the core of the lead and I would of preferred it to have been a circular flex rather than flat. It would also have been nice to be able to get this machine with the turbo tool as part of the package so that it would not need to be purchased separately. That being said all in all this is a great machine and I am very happy with it.
