Valkyria Chronicles was originally a Playstation 3 game released in 2008. With the upcoming spin off title Valkyria: Azure Revolution in the works the original game has been remastered for a Playstation 4 release with added trophy support, crisper visuals and all previously released downloadable content for less than £20. This is a steal for such an amazing title.Although the story is very much it's own tale filled with it's own fantastical elements it draws heavy inspiration from world war II history for it's ideas and setting. In1930s Europa in the small kingdom of Gallia which is stuck in the middle of two superpowers, the Empire and the Federation. Unfortunately Gallia is home to a large source of Ragnite,a powerful fuel source which results in it being invaded. You play the role of Welkin Gunther, son of a former war hero who joins the militia to fight for Gallia's people and it's freedom. The story is excellent, something I really didn't expect from a strategy role playing game. The core cast of characters are brilliantly fleshed out with their own personalities, their likes and dislikes and it brought some surprising emotional moments as the story progresses. I had tears in my eyes a couple of times to my utter surprise. The story is told from a book where you select different panels to watch story scenes in each chapter as well as engage in battles. At the start of each battle you are given a birds eye view of a map, where your units start and how many you are allowed to take into battle. Each unit has a specific class which shows their general usefulness:Scout - Large movement range, basic rifle.Shocktrooper - Has a machinegun, medium movement range.Sniper - Has a sniper rifle but has limited movement range.Lancer - Has an anti tank weapon, limited ammo.Engineer - Can repair tanks, refill troop ammo.Depending on the map and your objective for each battle will depend on how many units you may want to take, as well as which type. To add to that each character has their own uinique abilities as well as class abilities called "potentials" making every character in a class although the same, totally different. These abilities are not always positive and can often have a negative effect if say you bring a character allergic to pollen on a woodland map or a character that hates men with an otherwise all male squad etc. It's a really nice idea that makes you shift some of your squad around and even make some characters that get no story scene time feel like they have personalities. The game is turn based with each side having command points that designate how many actions you can take on that turn. Every time you select a unit you lose a command point from your total, you can then move them if you wish attack with either one of their weapons or grenade and then continue to move them for the duration of their movement bar. The only exception is with Welkin and his tank the Edelweiss which takes two command points per action taken but is insanely powerful and immune to most gunfire though enemy lancers and tanks can still decimate it if you aren't careful. Command points can be saved from turn to turn if you have done all the actions you wish to take you can pass. The most interesting thing though is you can use the same unit multiple times, each time you select them after the first though their movement bar decreases as if their stamima is wearing down. It's an interesting feature (one the AI can and will use against you, though not unfairly) that can even allow you to complete battles in just a couple of turns with one unit if you know how. Each battle has it's own objective to go along with the story, no two battles feel the same both because of this and the excellent variety of locations from small villages, forests, desert plains, cities and trenches. The art design to this game is superb and the graphics are simply gorgeous. It may be a Playstation 3 port but thanks to it's canvas engine the game looks almost like a watercolour painting in motion so easily stands up to more technically proficient games designed for the Playstation 4 in my opinion. The music matches the visual quality step by step with some outstanding pieces. There are some rousing orchestral tracks, especially the main theme but all of which have a distinct military flair to them to match the theme of the game. There are 18 chapters to the main story of Valkyria Chronicles with some chapters having multiple battles. There are also skirmishes to play which take certain chapter maps you can free play and on harder difficulties they really mix up the enemies and starting locations for added challenge. My first time through took me around 25 hours, getting the platinum trophy, A ranking every battle and collecting every character profile took me about 36 hours so there is plenty of value to be had. Speaking of value at the £17 this is currently available at you get not only a great strategy role playing game but also a 31 page glossy colour art book but also a two sided fold out poster and cardboard outer sleeve for the game case. It really is a bargain.I can't recommend this unique game enough. It mixes third person shooting with strategy gameplay, a great cast of characters and an engaging story. It's such a good price that even if you aren't sure it's really worth the risk.+ Enjoyable plot filled with interesting characters and emotional moments.+ Unique potentials are a nice idea, seperates characters in the same class and gives them personality.+ Each battle feels fresh objective and location wise.+ Beautiful art style and visuals.+ Great game with artbook and poster for less than £20.

This was one of my favourite games on the PS3, so I was super ecstatic when I heard this was coming over to the PS4 and couldn't have hit that pre-order button fast enough. The game runs smoothly and looks just as good, if not better than it did on the PS3, so really happy about that.I loved this game not only for it's artistic graphics, but the story and strategic/unique turn-based gameplay too, for me it has the whole package. This game is very story driven and you will find in each chapter there is more story episodes to go through, however you will find that each battle progressively takes longer as the game goes on.The story focuses on a group of people caught up in the middle of the Second Europan War.Gallia is a small country who are peaceful, are forced to defend themselves when The Empire invades due to their rich sources of Ragnite, a mineral which is getting scarce but highly used in a variety of practices. The group of people end up being enrolled into a militia which you take control of.There are 5 different classes to mix up during each battle (6 if you include the tanks), which most of the time, you get to choose who to use and depending on which mix-up of classes you use, can result how the outcome is and how easy.- The classes are as follows:∙ Scout: Able to travel the furthest out of all classes per turn, they also have decent firing range and can spot enemies from a far).∙ Shocktrooper: Wielding machine guns, this class has extreme anti-infantry fire power at close range, they can travel about half the distance a scout can.∙ Lancers: Unable to travel a great distance, however have extreme anti-tank power with their rocket launchers and can take a beating from bullets and explosives.∙ Engineers: Second best when it comes to travel distance; they do lack in amour, however are able to dismantle mines, fix barriers, repair tanks and heal other infantry greatly.∙ Snipers: Not great when it comes to movement, however have the longest and more accurate firing ability with most shots being a 1-hit kill with head-shots, depending on the enemies defensive position. There are many things to think about when in a battle:1) When moving around, you need to be careful when within certain enemy classes line of sight and in firing range as will shoot at you.2) Thinking about where your final position will be when your AP runs out that you cannot move any more, you don't want your soldiers to be a sitting duck in an open area where you can be easily targeted.3) Protecting the classes that cannot defend themselves: basically lancers and snipers do not shoot at those within proximity and do not fire back when shot at. Having a class nearby or having the defenceless somewhere the enemies can't easily get access to is key.4) Enemy defences: If an enemy is behind a sandbag, they take far less damage and can avoid incoming fire easier, so sometimes it's best to destroy the sandbags than concentrate on shooting at them directly.5) Enemies next move: Ties in with some points mentioned above, however it's very important you think about what the enemy could do next round to avoid any casualties or wasted turns. All of this in my opinion makes this game incredibly fun.You also have other things to rather than just the campaign such as skirmishes which are repeats of certain battles within the campaign, plus class specific skirmishes which require much more skill to complete, but reward greatly in EXP and the possibility of a powerful weapon. Then you have tabs which give you the back stories of all the characters and weapons.Regardless whether you're new to this game or really enjoyed it on the PS3, I would highly recommend getting this on the PS4.Great game available for a very decent price (£20 at the time of this review).

Valkyria Chronicles was one of the best games on PS3 originally. In fact its easily inside the top five greatest PS3 games. The story and acting is top notch, but I will not be talking about the story, its best to play it for the first time not knowing. I will say, its by far one of Segas finest games ever to be made. The Remastered version of Valkyria Chronicles on PS4 now has a resolution of full native 1080p, and runs at 60fps, unlike the PS3 version that was 720p and 30fps.The game has a English and Japanese voice overs, so you get the option in which language you get to play the game. The text is English only. The game is a turn base style strategy game in third person. The Art style of the game is like a water colour canvass, its lovely to look at.Valkryia Chronicles Remastered Europa Edition for PS4, you get all the dlc included on the disc. The following contains the dlc,Hard Ex ModeEdy's MissionSelvarias's MissionChallenge of the Edy DetachmentYou receive an A3 size poster of Squad 7 on one side, and Selvaria on the reverse side.It also comes with an 32 page colour art book, the art book itself is gloss on the outer cover, and smooth Matt finish on the inner pages themselves that are high in quality, and smell lovely. The art book is paperback and not hardback.I originally played the main game on PS3 back in 2009, and my first play through time was 60 plus hours, and that's not including the dlc missions. So all in all, the game is pretty lengthy. Some missions can take as long as four hours to complete, depending on your play style and tactics.I would recommend this game to anyone, this game was a hidden gem on PS3 in the time. Everything about this game is quality, and for the price its an absolute bargain. One of Segas finest games. Buy it!Overall96/100%

Hands down one of the best games I have ever played. Definitely worth a play through, but I recommend going in blind for the full experience.Story-wise, the game concerns the story of a small country that is invaded by a much larger superpower. It's heavily influenced by WWII, and this is reflected in the character designs and settings. The main cast are all excellently developed and become one of the stronger parts of the game. Think of it as a strategy game with the daily life of the soldiers shown in between battles. The gameplay is quite different to anything else I have played. It functions like a strategy game, with soldiers being placed on the battlefield from a bird's eye view, but then the movement of the soldiers takes place in third person with some shooter mechanics, somewhat like XCOM. This is done very well though, and it handles as a fairly in depth strategy-role-playing-shooter.The graphics have aged extremely well. The benefit of the watercolour art style is that it won't show any signs of decline in quality as the years go by.And the music. Definitely one of the strongest points of this title. It's played by a full orchestra, and each piece is well composed and played extremely well. The intro sequence especially is amazingly beautiful, and displays an impressive combination of great artwork and sound musical composition.Definitely a must play, and well deserving of a better sequel.

This game was sadly missed by the majority upon its original release but likely due to it only appealing to such a tight demographic. The game takes the action packed concept of war and dilutes the expected frantic skirmishes with part real time/ part turn based battle system. The words "turn based" alone will turn off anyone with even a passing interest in the likes of Call of Duty. This is a shame because the system is deep and strategic, allowing for multiple ways to approach a scenario beyond simply going all Arnold Schwarzenegger in Commando and taking out the enemy base with a bucket full of testosterone and a mountain of bullets. This game will require thought and careful planning; any gung ho antics will quickly result in a reality check.Knowing the strengths and weaknesses of your team mates is also essential for survival.Quite simply this is a game that will appeal to the patient, and it will reward such people with a deep combat system, a fascinating take on wartime Europe and a gorgeous cel shaded art style that has rarely worked so well before (with the exceptions perhaps of Okami and Wind Waker) and at the end of the day is a budget title too making it a worthy risk for the curious.

Played this game on the PS3 and loved every moment of it!! Am playing it on the PS4 and it seems to be just as great, a little better on the resolution scale. I would definitely purchase this game if you happen to love turn based strategy elements and the adventure of fighting in an anime version of World War 2 (of course another completely different reality). I bought this game for £20, which seems like a very fair price for the value for money you get out of it. Easily 25+ hours of gamely and lot's of replay value. I haven't always trusted SEGA with their choice on games development, but am completely satisfied they did a really good job on this one.

I was only browsing through rpg games on the internet, when this one kept popping up. So I thought I'd give it a try. I have not completed it yet, but so far the story is nice and the game play is amazing. If you like strategy games with action, you will love this. It's a mix of turn based combat but with a 3Rd person shooter as well. It goes from story to battle. The only thing i can say i would have liked but not in this, is world maps to explore. But that being said, it does cut out all the waffle and gets you straight to the story/action.As I said, if you like strategy rpg's this is a dream for you. Throughly recommended.

I bought this on the ps3 a long time ago and found a gem, not many people will have heard or played this game but it's fantastic, the gameplay is a bit similar to hogs of war on ps1 but with a lot more to it, the rpg element in it os one of a kind. The graphics are beautiful, smooth and different in a game one you will love as the game goes on. If ya in the mood for something different then this is the one. Give it a try you won't be disappointed. It even comes with all DLC which will keep you busy for a long time. Cant recommend it enough. It does get hard aswell for the people who like a bit of a challenge like I do

Valkyira Chronicles is quite possibly one of last generations' best games. A fun yet challenging campaign with a heart wrenching story. Characters you actually care about and a combat system that just seems to get better with age.So did I jump at the chance to get this again on the PS4? With a Art Book, all the DLC and a poster for less than £20? Of course (wow. It really makes me believe that all those £60+ special editions were ripping me off)Overall Valkyria Chronicles is not only one of the best games on the PS3 it now has the proud honour of being the best game on the PS4.

18.9.2019

Absolute gem of a game. It's turn based and looks stunning I love the sketch/water colour look. It has so many cut scenes and a great story most the game it does dip mid game for a bit but it's game play makes up for it. There's over 100+ character to use and customise and upgrade them. I surgest checking out a YouTube trailer before purchase but I do admit for me it's amazing it would of got 5 stars if the story was consistant but it's definitely worth a play if you like turn based combat.

20.5.2016

Really surprised how good this game is. I got it for around £17, which is an absolute steal for a game this good. The gameplay is turn-based, which I'm usually not a big fan of, but this game offers a lot of strategy and challenge to keep it interesting. The story is also really cool, it's an alternate history WW2 setting, and the characters and plot really keep you invested in the story. Do yourself a favour and get this gem.

19.5.2016

The story is set in an alternate WW2 setting of Europa. You play as a commander of a unit comprised of 'normal' people put into war. The gameplay is turn based strategy. You have limited movement within a turn to move units. It feels and plays great. The combat is broken up by anime style storytelling. It's well scripted and entertaining. Also it's entirely optional. You can skip it all to go straight into the action.

15.6.2016

Lovely anime-esque graphics, compelling story that makes you care about all characters even the non main characters (Edy,Jane,Marina and Susie 4 life) somewhat of a learning curve but you will learn as you play and eventually master it, a perfect game to ease you into strategy games as although you have to play smart you atleast get to control the characters instead of relying totally on luck.

11.9.2016

I like this game! Okay it's simplistic and the story/voice acting combine to be one of the most cringe worthy "why'd they bother writing it!?" experiences I can recall having, but if you embrace it, it's quite sweet. The game play is the main thing, and it's fairly decent, simple, turn-based strategy.

23.11.2017

visual interesting with good game play, a good turn based strategy game and the third person movement system will appeal to new and experienced players of the genre. the story isn't the most engaging due to the story book style breaks up the cut scenes to much but the game play all but makes up for it
