Game Summary:This is a turn based strategy/RPG fighting game with a lot of plot. The story is presented as a book with panels containing cartoon fronts which you select to watch / play. As you play out each double spread the page flips over to the next chapter. However, to advance you must watch each clip / complete each battle in sequence. The battles take place in a variety of surroundings and you fight with a squad you have picked from the men and women you have at your disposal.Plot / characters:There is a LOT of plot. To progress through the game you have to watch from six to ten cartoon plot movies before you can battle. This can be frustrating when you first start the game, but stick with it; you soon open up skirmish battles which can be played at any time.At the start of the game you can only fight with the troops you have on hand, but as the story progresses you become the leader of a squadron, allowing you to pick which soldiers you want under your command. Each soldier will have a different personality and set of traits; some may perform better alone, others need people around to stop them panicking, some like the desert, some are allergic to woodland. There are a lot of these traits to consider when building your squad. You also need to take into account which soldiers like one another and which soldiers should be kept apart. If you are clever with the traits and friendships you have amongst your soldiers you can get them to power up for better damage / defence etc, it you ignore their needs then they can lose damage / defence etc until you pay better attention to what their personality is.Fighting:The fighting is turn based but presented in a way which I haven't seen in any game before. At the start of a battle you will be briefed on what your mission and objectives are and then you will pick the soldiers you want to take, placing them on an overhead view map in whatever strategic positions you think would be best. There are six classes;Scout (low damage, very long distance runners, moderate constitution),Sniper (high damage, short distance movers, low constitution),Shocktrooper (high damage, moderate distance runners, high constitution),Engineer (low damage, long distance runners, low constitution - special: disarms mines),Lancer (anti-armour damage, moderate distance runners, moderate constitution),Tank Commander (high damage, short distance moving, high constitution). At the beginning of your round you will have a set number of Action Points which are shown across the top of your screen as shields. You will get a base number of AP each round which can be added to by bringing specific characters with you. You can spend you AP moving one character or buy giving Orders (pumping up specific attributes, etc). When you chose a character to move you switch from your overhead map to a first person view. You can move that character around in the environment until their movement bar runs out. If you encounter enemies they will take pot-shots at you until you are past them. Entering into your aim function stops them from shooting at you, but you are then riveted to the spot until your combat is done.General:Graphics: Pencilled outlines filled with water colours - very pretty if a little cartoony.Sound / music / voice acting: Nothing outstanding, but nothing bad either. In first person mode the characters had little catch phrases like "I'll do my best" and "I'm gonna get you now!"Camera angles: No problems with the camera, you can rotate it in first person to see around corners or over obstacles.Playability / diversity: Despite the lengthy waits between fights with the main plot line, the game play itself is very addictive. I enjoyed it enough that I intend to replay it through at some point.Ease / length: The game is relatively easy once you get the hang of it, some of the skirmishes I worked out a method of completing in one to three turns, but each new fight gave new difficulties which needed to be worked out, so new battles can take a while all the way up to the end. You can always play skirmish missions to work out kinks in your technique and get XP / cash for levelling up your troops and gear.Save points: You can save during the book mode, but you can also save during combat - something I didn't notice until I was half way through the story line.Gore rating: There is no real gore in the game making it completely child friendly. Apart from the fact that you're killing people there's no real reason for it being a 16+!Bugginess: I found no bugs during my play through.Replay-ability: Pretty high. I certainly intend to have another run through of it. You can return to any mission you particularly enjoyed or play skirmish missions at any time.Comparison: There's nothing on the market that I have found that plays in the same manner as this game, however, I would compare this game to Final Fantasy for it's lengthy plot and turn based style of fighting. My opinion:This is a great game which has a unique style of fighting, combining tactical placement of units with first person fighting. I really enjoyed this and I hope very much they bring a sequel out on the PS3 and don't just relegate the title to the PSP. Highly recommended!

Pros+Incredible story+Beautiful graphics+Amazing soundtrack+Unique gameplay that has a lot of balance+A lot of extra things you can do off the beaten pathCons-Your friends and family will feel neglectedSega has, by and large, given consumers a mixed bag of games. Sometimes you get games that don't live up to the potential that have been set for them and sometimes you get some downright bad games. When Sega has their head on straight, though, you get a game like Valkyria Chronicles. It's a rich tale with even richer gameplay. If there's one RPG PS3 owners must get, it is Valkyria Chronicles.Valkyria Chronicles is set in the year of 1935, but in an alternate reality. The story itself is told some nicely rendered cel shading as well as some well written and well performed dialog. The story is told through episodes which you'll undertake. It's an overall engrossing story filled with fantastic characters who are all well defined. The cutscenes themselves are also fairly moving. It's actually quite amazing how deep and mature the story really is.Gameplay wise, Valkyria Chronicles is somewhat different from your typical tactical RPG. In most tactical RPGs, you and the enemy usually take turns to act. Valkyria Chronicles does something a little different. Instead of taking turns you have what is called Command Points. As long as you still have command points left, you can send forth any unit you like and the order with which you send them doesn't matter. You could even send one ally to do everything provided you have the correct amount of command points. When you select a unit, however, Valkyria Chronicles throws in another twist. You view the action on an overworld map, but once you select a unit the game shifts into third person where you must move them yourself as though you were play a third person shooter. It's actually quite unique and breathes a lot of new life into the Tactical RPG genre. When an enemy is in sight, you'll have to aim and fire. The enemy can, if they wish, counterattack you as well. Just the same however, you can take the proper precautions and duck behind cover if you wish. There's quite a deep strategic element to the game. This is not going to be one of those Tactical RPGs where being stronger is all that matters. It goes much deeper than that. The game is balanced in such a way that each unit, depending on what they are is useful for different things. Scouts, for example, are good at pin-pointing where the enemy is, but they lack the firepower to take them down. Snipers, on the other hand, are good on offense, but lack range and defense. No matter how you slice it, it's impossible to take complete advantage of the game. Yet for what it's worth, you never get the feeling the game is too hard or too easy. It's just right.Providing even more balance is that once you take control of a unit it isn't for an infinite amount of time. Every unit has an action gauge, and when it runs out they can no longer move. You're still allowed to take action such as healing yourself or shooting at your enemy at least. Also, if you decided to keep using the same character over and over again for each command point, you'll notice their action gauge will fill up less and less. Again, it's designed so that you can't take absolute advantage. On the surface the gameplay is somewhat simple, but it's really quite deep and asks for a lot of strategy on the players part. After completing each mission, you'll be awarded experience and a ranking. The faster you get a mission done, the better your experience and ranking. On the other hand, characters do not level up individually. Rather their class (be they Sniper, Scout or what have you) levels up. There's so much depth to the gameplay that you hardly realize the game doesn't actually have online or multiplayer support of any kind. It'd be nice to challenge a friend online or work cooperatively, but with how engrossing the single player experience is, it's not that big a deal.Visually, Valkyria Chronicles is an astonishing looking game. It is by far the best cel-shaded game to date. The artistic design of the environments and characters is vibrant and colorful. Everything also moves very smoothly, even when things on the battlefield get hectic. Much like the graphics, the game also sounds incredibly good. Not only is there a very catchy and moving musical score, but the voice acting is also very well done and distinguished. It's amazing how much effort Sega went through to draw you into the story. It works incredibly well. And if you happen to dislike the English voices, you'll be happy to know you can switch the audio to Japanese.Make no mistake, Valkyria Chronicles is an amazing and enchanting game. It's got a deep, mature and well thought out storyline with lovable characters, and the gameplay experience is so unique that it's engrossing. If you're an Tactical RPG fan, Valkyria Chronicles is a must own title.

I am personally very cautious when it comes to buying games. Especially when buying games for the PS3. The price is generally high, and as such when you pay alot of money, you want alot back in return.I downloaded the demo of this on PSN and I loved it. The only thing that worried me was though, it was a bit... easy. However, anyone else who has this worry, fear not. This game is not as easy as the demo.I have NOT completed this game yet, however I've played enough to be able to decide whether its worth buying or not. So, lets start this...Graphics - 10/10I'm playing this game on its full setting (720p) and it looks beautiful. I would have loved to see a 1080i version but, thats just for a comparison. There are no framerate drops and the game looks beautiful throughout. Though I don't need glasses, I have trouble reading small writting on my TV at the best of times (32" Panasonic - Full HD), and thankfully for those with similar problems, thats not a problem here. The font for the subtitles is clear and bold and the text in speech boxes is quite large, so theres no problems reading it. You do unlock (at chapter 2-3, very early on; this is NOT a spoiler) Character profiles, Weapon Profiles and a Glossary early on in the game, which if you have eyes like mine, may require you to lean forward a little bit or to move closer to the TV.Colour wise the game is beautiful. The drawn manga effect in the shadows looks outstanding. I would go as far to say this is one of the most graphically pleasing games I've ever played. (I also PC game alot with a gaming PC, so I've seen alot of graphically outstanding games). This game is only second to Metal Gear Solid 4, but reconsidering, its really on par with it. There is also a lovely faded edge effect during alot of the combat which really makes the game look outstanding.Gameplay - 9.5/10The gameplay in this game is near perfect. Now you'll notice I gave it a 9.5, not a 10. I shall explain this now. To me, to get a 10/10 in gameplay, the controls need to be flawless, and have some truely outstanding schemes. The reason I didn't give this 10 is because there are no truely outstanding schemes. There are no truely amazing or unordinary controls. This is a strategy game though, so I wasnt looking for anything outstanding and new. However saying this the controls are perfect. The camera is easily moved, the movement is flawless. The only minor gripe I have is sometimes I have trouble jumping over sandbags. However this has never been a problem when i'm under fire, so its more likely to be me there. Aiming is made easy for those who arent very good as there is no time limit and no one can shoot you while you aim. When you first hear this you'd understandably think the pacing of this game is slow; but its not. This game makes you want to move and make you move fast. You cant afford to run around in the open (especially if theres a Shocktrooper or Tank nearby) or you will get killed. All the objectives so far in the game have been turn based. At first your led to beliving you get 20 turns to do all your missions, however you soon get that reduced to 10 for certain missions. (Chapter 4 I believe?) This particular mission is alot harder than the previous missions in the game. Suddenly you realise how much you relied on the generous amount of turns, and I can nearly gaurantee you will need those 10 turns to complete this mission (Or maybe i'm just not a born tacticion?)Overall - 10/10The only worry I have for this game is the length. I don't want it to end. I really have no idea how long this game is though so I can't comment on the length sadly. Overall this game is easy to pickup and learn but still hard. There are difficulty options and there's a tonne of replay value in trying to get better ranks on your missions. There's a seperate mode full of Skirmish battles to try out new squad formations and there's plenty of weapon upgrades and tank customising to do.If you havent played a strategy game before I reccomend this to be your first, and if your a fan of the genre, then this definatly has plenty to offer. With varying difficulty options it really appeals to all skill levels. There are hints through the radio during play such as "Make use of the watchtowers" and when I was low on ammo with my lancer I heard the message of "Lancers, watch your ammo" come through. Its little things like that which really make this game shine. Thanks for reading. I hope you enjoy this game as much as I am!!

Late to the Valkyria party? Yeah I guess so! I mean I had this game sat in my collection pretty much from release and only now I decide to play it right the way through and I am honestly glad I did.First off I will fess up and let you kind readers know that I am not really a tactics game type of guy. I have War of the Lions but I bought and played that more of a loyalty to the Final Fantasy brand more than any other reason. Valkyria Chronicles I did really enjoy my play through however more for its original art style and storyline over gameplay.VC does everything right I wish I enjoyed turn based tactical RPG’s more so I could have enjoyed it to its full potential. The look blow me away right from the off, this really is a beautiful game to look at and you will look at it a lot because in between gameplay there is a hell of a lot of chapters which tell the story. However, the story is brilliant and captivating so I didn’t mind how much of it there actually was. The main characters were all likeable and I felt a bond with them very quickly which is what you need with any good RPG game. I felt myself having the need to protect every character that was disposable from dying and not because I wanted to finish the game having no people die under my command but because they meant something to me.The battle system even though it’s not really my thing I did enjoy playing it. I liked the way each charter had their own individual strengths and weaknesses that were affected by teammates and surroundings, this is again what made every individual character unique and another reason I didn’t want any to die.The two guest characters from a previous well known Sega RPG where also a welcome addition to my squad. Those who have played turn based tactics games would be used to how games like this work however it is different from every other tactics game out there in the fact you can move anywhere in a 3rd person style and not confined to a chess board way of moving. I like the way you can move stop fire and then move on in one turn. I like the fact that you run out of ammo and need an engineer to come and deliver you more! I like the fact that if an alley falls in battle you can save them at possibly a greater risk of losing another member! This game will make you think about your actions and the fact you don’t know what is around the corner will make you take things slowly. The game is piled with extra missions and story but don’t forget to visit some places as I missed out on quite a bit on my first play through. Things like the news reporter who will give you stories to read and give you bonus missions at a price and don’t forget to visit the cemetery even if no one on your team has died; there is still a reason to visit! While there are good sides there is also bad! I did find that once you were given the options to dish out commands some missions you could really abuse this and finish stages within 1 or two turns leading you to an easy victory and an easy A rank, however having said that its entirely up to you if you want to abuse it or not.Valkyria Chronicles will be one of those games you will look back with in fond memories and probably one of the stand out games of the last generation!

If you've got CoD10 but don't have this, you are why we can't have nice things. tl;dr, it's the most interesting game that I feel this generation has to offer (at least on this console) and if you haven't bought it, you should ridicule yourself in the mirror. I should note that this game doesn't have trophy support. If this really breaks the sale for you, I am disappoint.Anyway, it turns out two clichés make something really original. WW2 game + anime, that is. The premise of the game is that you're on Europa in 1935 as a mad dictator storms in with tanks, doing a touch of ethnic cleansing as he proceeds. Subtle, right? Naturally,it is up to you to administer the boot to his posterior while enduring the most cutscenes I've had to deal with since MGS4 and there can be the silly nonsense within them that makes you cringe. However, they and the gameplay look lovely thanks to CANVAS - this motion watercolour hocum that Sega have come up with. If you want to see if that appeals to you, try the demo. While the story and characters are at first a modicum above completely grating, they'll grow on you and quickly. Likewise, the story evolves very quickly out of the WW2 plaigarism and into something engaging and unique. There are a large number of characters written into the game, if not all of them are very deep. You never use the ubiquitous SPEHS MEHRENS or faceless grunt (although the opposition is happy to) but must instead handpick fellow draftees whose backstories are represented in the gameplay with bonuses or defects that are of strategic significance. You become familiar with their personalities over time and can become very involved and if one is killed, you're given a by then very troubling death soliloquy and a grave you can visit. Perhaps unnerving...moving on!The gameplay itself is (apart from a token RPG-esque levelling system and deciding which of your squadmates to send into battle) made almost entirely of episodic battles. If I had to sum it up in 3 words, they'd be turn, based and strategy but it's hardly Civilization. Controlling the individual characters makes it almost an action kind of gameplay, but it's definitely all underpinned in tactics and the greater picture. I'm not really big into RTS or most other strategy for that matter, but this really hit the right spot for me. Perhaps that means if you're a chess master then this is too simplistic, yet there are some levels which seem to be brutally challenging to all I know that try them. The various classes are interesting, but the progression is limited - a problem addressed in the also worthwhile sequel. The gameplay in the original still managed to keep me interested for two playthroughs and I think I'll be back again before long. The story was captivating, though a bit blabby and anime-ish. I really enjoyed the soundtrack, but lawd knows how subjective music can be....bought it yet?

Probably my favourite game of all time, I just keep coming back to it. Must have ranked something like 500+ hours on it, judging by my save files. It's primarily a strategy game, which originally put me off completely. I generally find them a little dry, if I play 'em at all. Yet Valkyria Chronicles differs greatly from the norm in 2 main ways:1st - It has a compelling story, which was so good a manga was commissioned, followed by an anime. Usually, the opposite occurs in Japan, if a manga becomes popular enough, they'll make an anime, then a game! There's over 50 playable characters, each with their own animations and personality traits which can affect gameplay, such as acrophobia, hayfever, night vision, laziness, or whether they 'like' men or women. Incidentally, the country you represent in this fictional world has a universal conscription policy, which means your recruits will be male, female, and aged 12-65! This all lends a personal touch to what would otherwise be nameless grunts. There are even death scenes & a graveyard, so if you get someone killed, you'll remember it!2nd - The gameplay is heavily action-oriented. You're given a set amount of command points each turn, with which to select a unit and move them around/attack. But whereas you select a unit from the map, you actually move the soldier [or your tank] in 3rd-person perspective, taking direct control over their movements, taking aim, climbing ladders, and hiding behind cover. There is also an RPG element to the game, in that XP can be spent training up a class, or money spent on weapon R&D.The gameplay is also excellently balanced. You select your troops from 5 classes: scouts, shocktroopers, anti-tank lancers, engineers & snipers. Each have their own equipment and skills. It's up to you who you bring into the field, but you can't bring everyone on your squad, so you have to take an educated guess from the map you're shown. Speaking of which, there are 27 missions, each with their own specific terrain, and some surprisingly varied goals. Usually, you'll probably have to capture the enemy's base camp, but you might have to divert a juggernaut, blow up a bridge, or make sure no enemy escapes the field alive! Then, there's also 9 'skirmishes' which take previous locales, and change the conditions of victory. For replay value, you keep everything once you've finished the game, and you've no need to start again, as you can just select any chapter you wish to play again. There are also 5 secret characters, medals, and countless ways to achieve your goals, so it'll keep you busy! The only downside to the game is that people didn't buy it when it came out in the west, so VCII went straight to the PSP, and VCIII didn't even get sold outside of Japan. Still, this game has just been remastered & released on Steam, so perhaps it'll get a new audience!

In a word, this game is fantastic!Story: Following an alternative history of WWII you follow Welkin Gunther as he takes command of Militia squad 7 against the expanding empire. It's a great story and generally well told. A few character's are slightly unconvincing in their emotions at certain points but there are some genuinely surprising twists as you go through the game. The subjects of war and racism are dealt with very maturely with a heavy focus on the human and moral aspects rather than a lot games today where you just kill anything that moves and don't think about it. Overall the story is gripping and will keep you hooked in for the duration of the game.Graphics: Valkyria Chronicles looks like no other game i have played! It's done in a kind of watercolour scrap book style which works surprisingly well and is absolutely beautiful, it may not be realistic but it can still pack a punch when it wants to, some of the cutscenes are absolutely stunning.Gameplay: So this is where you really get hooked in! The main part of the game is in the missions. With a certain amount of command points to use you spend your time exploring the map, killing enemies, sneaking past spot lights, repairing tanks and capturing bases before handing over to your oponant to do the same. It is a very strategic game and often times new conditions will be thrown in mid-mission which require you to completely rethink your plan. If you need an action packed thrill a minute game then you may find this to be a little tedious but if you're willing to invest a lot of time you will find yourself spending hours trying to complete a particularly difficult mission. Outside of battle you have an outrageous amount of customisation potential at your headquaters. You can select the members for your squad, equip them each with weapons, train them up, read newspaper articles, learn new commands, the list seems endless! Fortunately a great deal of this isn't strictly needed to get through the game, but it's there if you want it.Having praised this game almost entirely i feel i should point out a few shoetcomings. The lack of any kind of multiplayer is one of the most disappointing moments in my gaming life! I would absolutely love to be able to play this game with my mates. The inability to speed up your emenies movements gets annoying and sometimes the chunks that the story comes in are a bit to big. You also can't replay the missions you've already done until you finish the game (many of them do reappear in skirmish mode but with big factors taken out making them far easier)but other than that its all good!Over all then this is an excellent game that perfectly strikes a balance between enjoyment and the constant fear of death! If you own a PS3 you should own this game, it's as simple as that!

So, this game came out a while back (2008!) and sadly, it was overlooked by many, including myself. Then again, I didn't get a PS3 till a year ago and had never heard of this game till recently.Don't let it's age put you of however. Apart from the Elder Scrolls IV and V, this is, hands down, the BEST game of the now passing generation. It is the most narrative game I have played in a while too, and you will spend most of you're time watching beautiful, Anime style cut scenes or reading well crafted back material, but the story is so compelling and the characters so engaging that you will often want to get the next battle out of the way just so you can see what happens next.Valkyria Chronicles tells the story of a war,the Second Europan War (it's a parallel earth you see) and a small, neutral country called Gallia who wish to have no part in the conflict. Unfortunate for Gallia is that its mountains are rich in an element called Ragnite which anything powered requires as fuel and is used in a lot of medicine too. This leads to the country being invaded by the Empire (their equivalent of the Axis), one of the two superpowers vying for control of the continent. And with that our characters are dragged into a conflict they never wanted a part of. Their mission: to protect home and family. It is a story of bravery, love, tragedy, loyalty and rebirth that will have you cheering one minute and crying the next. The battles themselves are interesting too and play out a little like warhammer (the table top version, not 'Dawn of War') where you have set classes that can attack once per turn and can move a set distance per turn. This gives it all a very 'puzzely' feel, but a dynamic puzzle as the enemy moves its own troops once your moves are exhausted. When moving soldier though, you do get direct, third person control giving it a real hybrid element between action and strategy game. The battlefields themselves are very dynamic though, from cities to trenches, and you don't fight on a level or 'flat' field either as you will be sending your character up ladders to find a good sniping position or down in to craters for cover. What I also liked is that you hand pick every character in your platoon (except for four-five major characters) and each soldier has their own back-story and traits giving them real personality (you'll kick yourself if you ever have to leave a man behind!). Each class levels up too in the RPG style and you can use your platoon earnings to buy better equipment for infantry or upgrade your tanks. All in all, one of the best and original games I've played in a long time with a story good enough for any book or film. All I can say is 'C'mon Saga! Bring the others out over here!'

Beautiful, mesmorising, amazing.......just a few of the adjectives that can be applied to this completely understated masterpiece from Sega. I will go as far as to say if you own a PS3, you MUST own this game. The story, in a nutshll, is that you live in a country called Gallia- much like Belgium in World war 2 (and WW1 for that matter). Caught between two warring factions (the allies and the axis), your take control of Welkin and a band of militia army as you struggle to maintain your independece against the invading imperial forces, that need to conquer Gallia as it sits on the main deposit of mineral that powers just about everything in this world.Grapically, this game is an absolute treat, with an anime style, of wonderful shades and colours that make you feel like you've been thrust into a comic book. The story is told via an historical book, whose pages you unlock as you progress throughout the game- and what a story it is, as you will want to keep on playng and playing to reveal the next chapters in the book.Gameplay wise, Valkyria is like no console game you have ever played before. Its a curious mixture of turn based RTS and FPS.You need to assemble a squad, from 5 different classes, scout, shocktrooper, sniper, lancer and engineer. On top of this each soldier has his/her own specific personality traits. For example, a city bred soldier will not enjoy operating in the countryside and vise versa, so you must carefully choose your squad for each particular mission.Once your squad is chosen, you see an overvew of the map, showing you and you enemy's position and your objectives. You then have a set number of action points to move your soldiers around the map. When you encounter an enemy, the game switches to FPS mode and you can fire your particular weapon at the enemy. Once you have used all the action points for your soldier, they cannot move again on that turn, so leave them exposed at your peril. After you have exhausted all of the command points that you have (you use a command point each time you move a soldier) then it is the enemy's turn to move. The set piece battle ends when you have completed the set objective, you lose you base, all of your soldiers or Welkin dies. This may sound a little complicated, but its simple to pick up how everything works and the battle system really does work a treat.I am only a short way through this game, but it is absolutely fantastic. If your still reading this review, why are you still sat there-go and buy Valkyria Chronicles (if you can find it anywhere!)

If you like "Shining Force", "Fire Emblem", "Vandal Hearts" etc then buy this lovingly crafted game.As usual, the characters are mostly young and one-dimensional. You'll warm to some of them, for no particular reason, and tend always to include them in your party. There is no penalty for this as units level up together by type. Make sure you choose pairs of "friends" from different unit types to back each other up in combat. You might as well pick Alicia, Rosie and Largo every time because they come with a "command point" apiece therefore their first move is basically "free".The plot is rather cheesy and simplistic but it will grab you anyway.Make sure you save some money to buy the journalist's special articles on Squad 7 when they become available. They enhance the plot and sometimes contain side missions. It can be quite disconserting if you view them later on as deceased characters and long ago completed missions often feature. You can buy Orders (buffs for your team) from the old soldier in the cemetery using exp. but I kept forgetting they were there and finished the game having only used one of them. I wish I'd saved the exp for leveling up. You can play through the game again using a Complete save game, keeping all your exp. and gear, but it seems that the harder difficulty level is only available as an add-on via DLC, for £4, which seems like a bit of a rip to me.Everyone has rightly praised the game therefore, rather than rehash what has, gone before, I'd like to point out a couple of minor niggles: Tanks get stuck on the scenery too often and they can't cross trenches, which is ridiculous. OK, I'm being picky here but my other moan is that the game runs out of steam towards the end and the final battle ends up being just like the final battle in every JRPG ever: a big, powerful boss with a weakness that allows you to chip away at his HP until, when he's half dead, he becomes even more powerful...but is now actually easier to hurt. What a let down! Why couldn't we have ended with a huge battle, all our troops on the field at the same time, kicking the Imps out of Gallia in a glorious rout! That would have been a fitting ending to a great campaign. This is a five star game that is almost perfect. I would recomend it to anyone, even if you haven't tried turn-based games before. This would be a great place to start...and it's cheap now ;)PS could someone add a review of the other DLC? Is it worth paying for?

I was so happy that I purchased this game. I bought it on a whim a few weeks back and have not put it down since. The story is wonderfully played out and really makes you care for the characters involved. The gameplay itself is a nicely thought out turn based system where you start by deploying your combat squad in predetermined areas. The troop types basically fall into 5 categories, Scouting, Anti troop, Anti Armour, sniper and Engineer/Support. You also start every mission with your trusty modified tank which while at times tends to just sit there unused, can be a massively useful machine when needed. Once your squad is deployed you have a set amount of 'Command/Action points'to move and attack with your selected unit. Troops use 1 command point per action and your tank uses 2. Once you have used up your command points the enemy will then perform there actions so be sure to not leave troops out in the open or they will likely die very quickly.Another Nice feature is the development. as you complete each mission you will be rewarded money and experience. The faster you complete the mission and the more enemy leaders and armour you kill, the more money and experience you will be awarded with. The experience is distributed between the different classes of troop rather then individual characters, this allows you to not worry about having to bring in a noob to replace a character you have used lots and has died (Once they die you cant bring them back)as everyone in that class will be the same level. As the classes level up they become stronger and also give access to special 'traits' that each character has. These however can be both positive and negative. For instance some people may be adept at night combat allowing them to see as far as they could if it were daytime while others could be allergic to desert combat and will lose health constantly if on sand. Levelling up also unlocks Commands you can give to your troops during missions with various effects such as increased defence/attack, instant healing or even aerial bombardment.Your tank and troop weapons can also be upgraded. as you complete missions more and more upgrades become available which you can spend money on, increasing both the lethality and defence of your force. All in all this is a great game. I can see why it has earned Game of the year awards, amongst others, and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good tactical game with a great plot.

do you like games like advance wars with turn based play?do you like real time play where everything is intense?this is a hybrid of the 2 concepts.while things are essentially turn based at first, when you get down to it you really have to plan ahead but also work on the fly to avoid being taken down.the AI has moments where it makes silly mistakes giving you wide open chances to take them out but this isent common and the AI will not hold back in its effort to destroy you.you build your own squad from 5 different classes which you can upgrade and customize equipment to alter damage, accuracy etcEach member, including the extras, all have their own talents which you will come to learn.A death of any of these members is permenant and you will need to replace them with a new member so you tend to grow attached to your favourite members as you decide who charges in and who holds back. Once you come back from the ravages of war use your cash and experience to upgrade you squad for future battles, and for those looking for repeat play, there is skirmish modes and maps where you can play battles over and over to train your team up for future battles or just for fun.the story is engaging in a story book format, the game is broken down into chapters and each chapter consists of different sections that can either be clips that further the story or battles where you activly decide the fate of your team. It is a story of friendship (in sometimes unlikely places) and love and passion, you really come to terms with the horrors of war and yet also how life carries on in the midst of war.the grapical design is more cartoon like with times when you see a comical "boom" pop up when you destroy a tank but it also means more action can occur with minimal slow down and its easy on the eyes to play which is a plus for this kind of game.the characters will grow on you, the story will grow with you and the battles will test your ability to adapt, when youve taken down a tank the size of small mountain you know youve seen everything :Dpersonally i can recommend this to anyone who likes RPG with a hint of stratagy, it has moments where it could have been improved but few and far between.buy it, its worth it

Note: This is a review by E. Hoare's son. This is my third favourite game of all time, (second MGS 4 and first Empire Total War demo)! This is such a great game that if I did not own a PS3 and played VC for five minutes, I would go as far as buying a PS3 just to get this game!Although Amazon rates their games using a 5 star system I will use a 10/10 system for each individual part.Gameplay: 8.5/10. The basic controls are smooth and easy. For those who have the Brothers in Arms games you may think that this is a copied, rundown version of those games but it isn¡¦t. It¡¦s better.Although you may rebuke when you see the abbreviation TBS, (which it is) don¡¦t let it put you off, this game is excellent. You control EVERYONE personally, each with their own history and friends on the battlefield whether it be strong-willed Lieutenant Welkin or conscripted 12 year old Aisha. At one stage, around mission 5 boy and girl Vyse and Aika, who travelled the world together seeking adventure, were ambushed. Unfortunately Aika became the first casualty of my platoon. This made Vyse not continue on any operations because he was still grieving for her death. He eventually came back thoughº.Plot: 9/10. Although I haven¡¦t completed the game yet, I am already hooked on to this fascinating plot, what are the powers of the Valkyire? Is the Edelweiss a Panzer III with a Panthers turret? What is the Darcsen Calamity? WHY IS THE BATOMYS SO BIG???I will just have to play to find out!Graphics: 8.5/10. It may be Anime but it sure is great! The landscape is beautiful along with all the little things like Edelweiss and the soldiers running along side. It¡¦s like a painting come to life. And what a painting!Replayability (Yes, it¡¦s a word!): 7/10. Unfortunately, you cannot go back and play a mission again. Luckily you can watch the cutscenes again as well as play Skirmishes on the same maps!Multiplayer: 0/0. Sadly, no multiplayer. If it had then this would be my second favourite game!So after all that, I will give this game¡K9/10 or 5 stars! This is a great game and if you have the girly Nintendo Wii or the greedy, money-grabbing, Microsoft Xbox 360 then buy a PS3 so you can play this game and MGS4.Happy Playing!

Valkyria Chronicles is one of those obscure, cult games that seemed to get little recognition on the gaming market, but where it DID get recognition, the praise just couldn't be heaped high enough. You can recognise this pattern with other niche games like ICO, Okami, and Beyond Good and Evil, and I bought it hoping I was in for a suitably similar treat.I was not disappointed. VC is a beautiful, fun and involving fusion of turn-based roleplaying, strategy and action/shooting genres and the whole thing works fantastically. Forget your excessive emphasis on increasingly boring realism - if only more developers would be willing to invest in more inspired artistic directions and gun for unique visual styles like VC has!The whole game feels as though it's being illustrated even as you play it, with gorgeous anime art in soft-shaded storybook settings that remind me a little of Okami's watercolour-esque visuals. A lot of love has obviously gone into developing the story, the characters and the setting, and despite the plot pertaining to a war and the story touching appropriately on the serious aspects of this, the game has a genuine feel-good factor that makes it highly enjoyable to play. You feel as well bonded to your well-meaning militia squad as they are to each other. This is helped by gameplay that, for the most part, enables you not to worry about silly niggly things that many RPGs still get tied up with. Problems like your unused characters not gaining experience, running around in circles for hours on end to generate some random encounters, excessive need for level-grinding etc. are all non-existent here as you level up entire character classes at a time and modify their grouped equipment. This means you can focus entirely on the story and your strategy, and getting the most out of those fairly diverse and interesting maps. Battles can become tense but never frustrating, and are very rewarding when you manage to best the odds and complete an objective.I haven't really played anything like Valkyria Chronicles before, but I'm exceptionally glad I picked it up. If you pick up any PS3 exclusive game this really has to be it!

I played the demo of this game and have wanted the full game since playing it! The graphics are quite cartoony but the quality is still good. The storyline plays as a though reading a book, you progress through chapters which have about 6 storyline cut scenes and one combat scene. You can scroll through previous chapters at will and there is also a skirmish section so that you can replay most battles that you have completed and so gain more experience with which to level up one of your character classes or you can level up multiple classes at a time as long as you have enough experience stored. You also gain money with which you can buy upgrades for class weapons and upgrade your main characters tank, upgrades being better armour, more shots with a weapon type for example. The storyline shows you how the characters interact and details the progression of the war that you are involved in, you can also click to skip if you are getting bored of reading and go back to read it at a later date if wanted. There is a graveyard where you can view fallen soldiers (I haven't lost any yet so I don't know how the screen looks :P) There is also a headquarters where you can recruit new people and remove people from your team selection. During the mission there will generally be a base camp that you own or can capture and from here you can spend command points to bring in more units or can retreat members from the field of battle. If a character takes enough damage that they are incapacitated you can run up to them and call a field medic to remove them so they do not die (you have about three game rounds to save them before they die for good!!)And so overall, the game is very addictive, easy to play and the story is good to follow, not preachy as some japanese style games can be, the graphics as said are cartony but still good and show how the PS3 can work. The skirmish mode for helping to level up your characters is very handy as some levels are quite tricky. The price of the game is well worth it and hope you choose to buy it. :)
