The Tropico series has been a popular city-building simulation with various PC gamers over the past few years, however is now taking its first trip in next-generation console gaming. With numerous attempts at this genre being let down by the basic control system the Xbox delivers, can it change all that and make itself the best city-building simulation out there? We find out...Tropico 3 involves you running one of 14 various Caribbean islands. You can choose from around 20 pre-made presidents or make your own, with unique traits to share to your newly-ruled country. The tutorial gets you to grips with the basics of the game, including moving characters, buying buildings and managing unlawful citizens, however you need to progress through Career mode to get more knowledge on running a country. Of course, if you are feeling really confident, you can try Sandbox mode which gives you complete control over every single aspect, but unfortunately gives you no pointers or directions to assist your building adventure. In fact, Sandbox mode is in some ways more challenging than the last level of Career mode!Over the course of me playing Career mode, and Sandbox mode, I got offered lots of cool offers including meeting the Queen. You can accept, negotiate or oppose these offers. If you accept, you have to spend a lot of money but reap some good rewards. If you negotiate, this means you are open to criticism if the Queen came and you had not spent enough money, or time, on her. Or you could alternatively try and come up with a cost-cutting solution, and finally oppose which allows you reject it, leaving everything the way it was before and no-one will ever know. These offers really spice up the games interface, and usually come with benefits, such as cash rewards or respect awards. The controls are surprisingly easy to get used to. Hold down Y to get a list of buildings you can build, or what you need to build them, or press RT to select your character, financial status, or an event which should occur to change your country. To move yourself around, use the LTS and to zoom in and out, and rotate around, move RTS. It has got to be the one of the easiest, most thought out, control systems implanted into a strategy game for a long time. The graphics are actually quite good for the sort of game. As you zoom in, you can see people with different expressions walking around in different ways, and you can see flags waving on buildings, and builders constructing objects. It is all nice detail, but if you do not like the 360 degree camera, you can always go back to The Sims 1 era camera which can actually help with the rotation of buildings at least. However, there is a flaw with having either a small screen or a standard-def TV, the HUD is huge, takes up half the page, but the text is tiny, it will take a long time to read what it says. This isn't helpful when you go and spend $8000 on an object because you thought you had that money, just to discover you only had $3000. Not helpful. The soundtrack does a get a tad-repetitive, with the whole `I live on the Caribbean' theme going round and round in your head. Sometimes the music is relevant to an event, i.e. a barbeque beach party, but other times when a fight is going on, with fire, flames and the like going on, the music is still a tad too cherry. Also, the voiceovers are hard to understand, not because of the accent, but because the backing music overrules what they say. Sometimes, and probably a glitch on my side, voiceovers lap each other quite easily, which is a bit upsetting. As mentioned earlier, there are a few flaws in the process. For example, it is incredibly challenging throughout the whole game, with lots of stuff happening at one time, and not being able to control it. Couple this with the overriding each-other voiceovers and even more confusion can occur. Also, if you have a normal-small- standard-def TV you will encounter some graphical issues. Apart from these minor omissions, there is nothing really wrong with the title, it is a fun, enjoyable city-building simulator, with good music and a flexible control system. A silent title it may be, but a great one nevertheless!

When you're tired of FPS action, bored of another game of Fifa and can't be bothered to load up another fantasy RPG, it's good to know some studios are still churning out games like Tropico 3.Blending a mixture of Sim City building juggling, with economic management and political intrigue, I was surprised to see how well this game works with the 360 controller. The menus are easy to navigate, and the shortcuts are simple. The graphics are gorgeous for a strategy game, from sunsets over your hilltop pineapple farm, to American Mushroom clouds on the horizon everything looks sharp and crisp. The sound too is fun, with a well voice acted radio DJ giving you hints and tips and some nice latino/carribbean grooves. So whether you decide to be a man of the people - taking the yankee dollar, democracy, fair elections and tourism route; or be a total maniac, with secret police, the ability to make political enemies 'disappear', bribery and wiretapping, this game has something for you.Highly recommended - 4 Stars

Classic city building, strategy game for those who understand the Latin American(Caribbean)cold war period. Honestly some of the best political quotes ever, hilarious. The game play is nice and the graphics very convincing and funny. So you have an island as a leader of a Caribbean island during the cold war, and you try to make it prosper. Game mechanics are quite cool and try to be really unpredictable as for example starved workers are ! It deals with all sorts of politics from immigration to income disparity, communism and capitalism. You can succeed with almost any political method and there is a lot of depth on how the game reacts to your building plans.I would really like the title in the future to go even deeper and have even more complex behaviour .Imports and inflation, lazyness, corruption, citizen to be able to build by themselves buildings etc ... nevertheless is an excellent title that with every release is much much better. Well done

This game is very good when you consider it is on the 360. I was surprised at how easily I got used to playing the game with the control pad. Like many of you I have grown up on PC gaming and have merged over from the PC to 360 for every type of game I own except sim/god games. Whilst the last C&C game on the PC was far better than its counterpart on the 360 I am pleased to say that Tropico 3 has made the jump extremely well. Graphics are amazing when you think of the relatively low processing power the 360 has. Also the controls, once you get used to them, are a breeze to master. I bought the game on a Monday and played every night after work putting in over 25 hours in a week.Time flies and I have barely scratched the surface of this game. There are no battles however if you enjoy watching your "city" grow and following your islanders lives this game is great. Well worth a go especially now the price has fallen!

I'll keep it brief! The game is a laugh and you can spend hours just on 1 map. Theres lots of depth as well, you can have everything from oil refineries to secret police. Everything about being a dictator is in the game, even elections that you can rig. 1 problem is that if you let your island get into debt then you'll probably get invaded by the US or USSR, tip: try and keep your funds in positive balance!Pro: Epic fun and super in depth, value for money, long term playability, rarely get boredCons: invasion by USA or USSR if your not careful, raising funds at the start is hard, elections (every 5 years) can cut the game short.Verdict: you'll enjoy it, its one of those different games (a bit like a sim city game)only its the whole island and your the dictator, its a welcome break from the usual games on the market!

After plying the original game religiously I was very excited when this instalment was released. It has lived up to all of my expectations and more, it has built upon the concepts that made the original game great, retaining it quirky sense of humour and game play ideas, but now giving you are much more inclusive game (such as adding new building, trade options, and edicts e.g.you now get the option to make same sex marriages legal). If you like the original then try this game, I can assure you that everything that you loved about the original is hear just bigger, better and prettier! The control system on the 360 version is good considering it is on a consol,I would still recommend getting it on the PC so you can use a mouse and keyboard, but unfortunately my current PC is not capable of running it.

While I have not played the previous installments of the game, which I imagine must have followed a similar pattern, I foud the game excellent - highly entertaining for the casual player looking for a bit of fun but still offering sufficient complexity for the micro-manager amongst aspiring dictators. The game offers three basic modes, the campaign mode with 15 prescribed scenarios that one goes through, the sandbox mode, where one can either play on a randomly generated or real map of a Carribean island and finally one can go for a custom generated challenge. In terms of gameplay these cover pretty much all the spectrum of needs a player is likely to throw at the game - from a strategic perspective, where one plays fast and relatively lassiez faire but derives quick kicks (think

graphics rnt great, each mission can get a bit repetative tho there are different challenges on each tho at the start its usualy the same thing. if you set of bad u may as well start the level over cuase its hard to turn the level arround mid way, tho at the start everythin goes wrong usaly like most construction control games. on a bit plus side it lets you bring out the dictator in you... kinda satisfying if there is a protestor sending your secrate police to kill him. if you like sim city style games with a bit more of a twist and control id get this game.oh after a while the music gets annoying and the radio presenter makes you want to get a gun and hunt him down...but you deal with it cause he gives you hints on what people want even tho its in a stupid and repetative way.

Tropico 3 is a fun game with a good variation of challenges. There are many different missions that will take time to complete. The economy system works well and once you have a good economy set up the money will roll in quicker than you can spend it!The population happiness system is very tricky to get right, I have never gotten above 60% overall rating and it takes a very long time for the rating to go up, but if the needs of the population are left unattended for a little while your rating will drop like a stone! There are several cheats available around and while they are very handy and timesaving, they can quickly suck the fun out of the game, so I advise you use them with restraint.Overall it is worth a play on the PC,would never recommend a strategy game on the XBOX!

My son played with this at his cousins and was desperate for it. He worked to pay for it and was so excited when he ordered it. This soon gave way to frustration as it seemed to take FOREVER to arrive. Though in reality it was only about a week. However the sender was very helpful and it wasnt till it arrived that we realised it came from the Channel Islands. If i had known that i would have been happy with delivery in a week. I am still old enough to remember when anything you bough mail order could take up to 28 days!Anywho, my son loves this game, he did lose his temper last night when rebels attacked his rum refinery. Counting days till Tropico 4 comes out.

my english is not that good so my review will be very short.this game is great. if you liked tropico or tropico 2, you'll play as much as you can because it's a great enhancement.but every strategy game fan will like it. it links the bes of civilization revolution and sim city.unfortunately you can't play online as in civilization revolution; it would have been nice to play "against" a near tropico's island in real time.

I play way too many video games, but none keep me coming back for more like Tropico. Easily the best RTS I've played since Civ III. Most of the glitches are fixed (or fixable - if you fire up the xbox guide it unfreezes the game if it's locked).I have one gripe: there's no way to quickly traverse the map. If you're playing on a large island, this can be a problem.

Well I recieve my copy a day early which was a nice suprise and the game itself is lots of fun! I've given it 4 stars but it could have been 5 if it had been delivered in perfect condition. When i recieved, it the bottom of the case was smashed. That was my only disappointment but apart from that, everything else was perfect! :D

This is a pretty good game if you like sims etc. Rule your own caribbean island with an iron fist or a kid glove, choose your allies, make a speech to appease the population, make a treaty and build your island how you want to. Beware there are rebels and protestors not to mention elections to contend with. Good fun .

27.9.2010

Just good fun. Simple but effective, more than just a shoot 'em up, blow 'em up game, similar to like Sims City but you can choose to be a benevolent or wicked dictator and found your own city. You can build industries, form armies etc. I am 13 and I enjoy it as well as my dad who is 45.
