My intention was to buy two 8TB drives (one in a PC where noise mattered and a backup where noise didn't matter), but given some of the other review comments about noise, I thought I'd only buy one of these for now to see what the noise was like.Had this running for a day now with some observations:-When installing via a USB to SATA adaptor (thought I'd try it externally first before fitting into a machine), it only detects about 1TB of data. I was a bit worried but it's fine once installed internally into a machine's SATA port, which would then see the full 8TB. I formatted as GPT rather than MBR.ProsGreat storage capacity for the money (bought significantly cheaper than other 8TB drives, even the SMR drives).Seems reasonably speedyArrived in nicely padded packaging - it would seem Amazon have improved since some of the other reviews!ConsSeems to run hotter than other drives (the 9w rating vs most other drives 6w would explain this, but note this run)Noisier than other drives I have. I wouldn't say as bad as some reviews make out, but you can definitely heard the clunk of writing and the whirr of the drive spinning. In summary, I'm on the fence still whether to buy a second on of these, or spend more money on a quieter drive... My one doesn't seem as bad as some of the comments make out, however sufficient for me not to rush out and buy a second one just yet...Will update in future if there are any changes.Update (1 week): I decided to buy a second one more because I couldn't be bothered with the hassle of taking the first one out of the machine it was in to put into a second machine and copying all the files around.Noise wise, once setup and have the drive sleep after an hour of in activity, does make it better however I can understand for a lot of people it probably doesn't work for them.So my summary persists for nowAn average drive but noisy and emits heat, however it is currently priced better than the competition to compensate...Update Nov 2019: 6 months in and both drives working fine. Main one is one 24/7. Noise levels are no worse than originally..Update April 2020: 12 months on and both drives still working fine. Main one has still been running 24/7. Once again, noise levels are no worse than before. Raising my rating to 4 stars, since although not perfect due to increased noise and heat, they have been good value and worked well and proven reliable so far.Update August 2020: over a year on, both drives have been running 24/7 now and touch wood, both perfectly reliable. Given their price point and the fact they've been running now in machines in a warm, humid cellar (25c-30c with around 70-90pct humidity), these drives have now in my eyes eventually earned a well deserved 5 star rating despite my original misgivings...

*** Update ~ six months inI now have four 4TB N300 drives running across my two active NAS servers (the DS1019+ and 412+), and so far they have been running flawlessly. They seem to run around 2-3 degrees cooler than the 4TB HGST drives they are now mostly paired with (39-40 degrees, vs. 42-43 for the HGSTs), though obviously a bit warmer than the remaining 5400rpm Seagate drive (at 36 degrees).*** Original reviewI previously used a mix of 7200rpm HGST and 5x00rpm Seagate NAS drives and Samsung EcoGreen ones in my NAS servers (Synology DS1019+, 412+ and an older QNAP TS-210). These have replaced the Samsung ones, and I will probably get some more to replace some of the Seagate ones as they have been in continuous daily use for over five years. After around two months of use I can’t comment on longevity or reliability, but in terms of performance they have been a big improvement in the older 5x00rpm drives, and they haven’t increased the noise levels (which means at least they are quieter than the 7200rpm HGST drives). The 'bulk' drives just came in individual simple cardboard boxes with padding to stop the drives moving around - which is a step up from a single cardboard box for three drives with no padding I got most of my previous Seagate drives in.

It came dead. When powered, the drive spun up, then it just did some repeating noises for a while until it gave up. The drive was not recognized in any of two computers.Amazon guided me to Toshiba's support to avail of the manufacturer's warrant, and I just RMA'd the drive.I wish I had taken pictures of the packaging, though. There were two boxes: the inner Toshiba one (sealed) containing the drive in its sealed anti-static bag bearing a sticker matching the drive's serial number, and the outer one provided by Amazon. Both of them had a very scant amount of paper filler on just one side of the drive / inner box. It seems likely that the drive could have been damaged during transport due to inadequate packaging. The RMA instructions were quite precise about how to package the drive in order to return it. I'm sure the original packaging wouldn't have qualified.Update: I got the replacement from the RMA in a couple of days, properly packaged. Detected, no weird noises. It's not even loud as some other reviews suggest. It passed the SMART long test and is now working as expected as part of my NAS's btrfs volume. So I upgraded it to 4 stars. It'd have been five starts if I didn't have to get the replacement.

Now I bought 3 x 4TB versions of these to replace the drives in my RAID-5 array. Compared to the Seagate Ironwolf Pro drives, these are a real bargain in terms of price, being almost 1/3 cheaper. And you really HAVE to compare the N300 against the Ironwolf Pro rather than the Ironwolf because only the Ironwolf Pro spins at 7200rpm like the N300 does. They're certainly faster in terms of transfer rate than the Ironwolf spinning at 5900rpm, but DEAR GOD are they noisy. I don't think I've come across a drive as noisy as the N300 in a LONG time. We're not talking about case-rattle here either, so it's not something that can be damped-down, this is head stepping noise.I read one of the reviews here that said that they sound like a tractor and I have to absolutely agree. So the conclusion is this: If you don't mind the noise, these drives are fast and work well. If you're annoyed by the noise, as I am and if you want something comparable in speed, you'll simply have to fork out the extra and buy the Seagate Ironwolf Pro drives, or if you don't mind sacrificing a bit of speed for less noise, then the Ironwolf is only a little more expensive than the N300.

I have 3 of these. One died at a year old, but caused me to investigate why that happened. I found that like other 4TB drives, they run quite hot. In the exact same case and enclosure that previously contained 5 Samsung 2TB, they were reaching >50C and during the recent hot spell, >55C. This is too hot for any drive to last long, and it was the central drive that ran hottest and failed. The Samsungs ran at 40-45C and were still fine at 6-8years old. It's not just this Toshiba N300 drive that runs hot, I have HGST 4TB that are the same, running 10C hotter than the old drives. Having now installed an extra large fan, they're running at a safer 40-45C so I don't anticipate more failures.Just something you need to be aware of, if you buy an N300 download and use Crystaldiskinfo (free) and keep an eye on temperature.Edit: 2 years later, no failures or errors at all, now they never get over 45C, and mostly run at 35-40C. So watch the temperatures if you want them to last. Even the drive that did throw some bad sectors when it got too hot, hasn't grown any more.

With a failed disk issue in our Zyxel NAS (RAID-1), I decided to replace both HDDs and to increase unit size from 2 to 4TB. These are also 7200 rpm as opposed to the WD 5400 rpm 2TB units they have replaced.Obviously, my need was urgent so, I paid a bit more for these 2 disks when compared with other supposedly "Prime" offerings on Amazon. Indeed, Scan Computers were the only sellers offering next day (Saturday morning) delivery (despite not being a Prime offering).Given the late hour on a Friday afternoon, I was dubious but they delivered - and my NAS is now fixed. Thank you Scan Computers and sorry I doubted you!I recovered one HDD at a time which is easy but not quick!Head movement is rather noisy and they run a tad hotter than the WD they replaced. However, I had expected this and a worst case 42 degC is more than reasonable. The units were factory sealed, well packaged with a manufacturing date of June 2020.So, I have no complaints - indeed, I am most chuffed!

I have some 20 of these drives in various capacities in my home NAS/SAN's and have yet to have an issue with them. These are probably in the most unfavourable conditions imaginable - some are crammed in a tight 2U chassis on top of each other, limited cooling with maximum dust and the storage arrays live in a cupboard under the stairs with little to no ventilation. All of these drives sit in various forms of ZFS pools and are quite heavily used with lots of daily read/writes and the weekly scrub.I've not had a single drive fail yet in the 4+ years I've been using Toshiba which I am very happy with (especially given the thrashing they've had)A couple of things to note though is that these drives run HOT (at least in my poor environment)and boy are they loud.Sitting in the same room as them while they are running an intensive operation is frankly unbearable.

I bought two of these drives for a NAS unit. I was concerned at the stories of these bulk units arriving damaged / DOA without proper packaging. Mine arrived in solid sealed carboard boxes that had foam inside to protect the drives from damage. As I was just putting the bare drives in a NAS I didn't need instructions, cables, screws etc. The drives are quite noisy, but the NAS is out the way, so not a problem. The noise is just head seeking and spinning, as you would expect. The drives run at around 30C - 33C so they aren't getting too hot in use. The drives get a clean bill of health on the S.M.A.R.T test. So, as far as I can tell these are good quality drives at a good price, and arrive well protected and without lots on unnecessary "retail" gubbins you don't need. I will update the review if things go wrong later!

Received the drive today, nicely packed so thanks to the shipper. drive is housed in mounting frame that houses 3 other discs, each 8tb drives. Write and read performance using it as a stand alone drive formatted in ext4 is comparable with HGST or Seagate. I compared copying a large file from an ssd to each of the 3 drives and they all managed it in similar time frames. read performance is equally comparable. noise levels are comparable too.So all things considered I am happy with the result given that the price for the 8tb bare drive is also in line with the other 2 vendors.Wonder how long it will last. I already had 2 seagate (out of 4) and 1 HGST (out of 3) drives die within a year.hopefully the Toshiba will last longer

Purchased at £208.99.Bought this drive to go into a NAS for media storage. The drive comes in a nondescript box/packaging as it was bought as part of a larger order and resold but warranty applies as normal (confirmed with Toshiba). This is the first Toshiba drive I've bought and it sits alongside several Seagate Ironwolf's and honestly, the quality of the drive is just as good. Read/write speeds are respectable and more than sufficient for a NAS.The only drawback is the Ironwolf's have Seagate's health management suite on my NAS whereas this Toshiba doesn't. This does not affect the usability or quality of the drive at all. For the performance to price ratio, this is an exceptional drive!

Does what it says on the box.I have read that some users are reporting a noise issue.Mine is as quiet as a mouse, trying to be quiet. The packaging could be a lot better, as you would expect a hard drive to be securely packaged in a protective case. But hey. It did have 'bulk' in the description.Excellent value for money. At the time of purchase. It is £165.Five pounds more than the 6TB version!Update 26/02/2021My server is now reporting S.M.A.R.T errors after a few weeks of use.I have requested a replacement. This could be an isolated fault.I will see how the replacement performs before changing my score.

I ordered four of these from Amazon when they were on special offer. I chose the 8TB version to replace my WD Red 1TB drives as I was running out of space. These N300s are on the compatibility list for my Qnap nas so installation was a walk in the park. The drives were the lowest cost per TB and I'm pleased with the capacity improvement and performance. The only issue is the N300s make significantly more noise than my WD Reds. It is normal hard drive access noise rather than spindle or bearing noise, not a problem for me as my nas lives in my lounge. This could be a problem for a bedroom or quiet study location.

This 8TB hard drive is priced well considering the capacity. It is very loud, though. The noise would be unbearable in a PC, so follow the label and use it in a server or NAS exclusively, preferably in a cupboard or somewhere similar. These drives stay cooler than my previous ones which is what you should expect from a NAS drive. I cannot comment on the longevity or MTBF of these drives as I have only had then running for around three months. They are working well, decent speed (for a mechanical drive), and I have not had any issues. I bought from Toshiba with confidence and I am pleased so far.

I needed this for a Synology NAS. The Synology compatibility list shows HDWN180UZSVA but not HDWG180UZSVA. There is just one letter difference N and G. The product listing shows HDWN180UZSVA (with N) but the disk that arrived was HDWG180UZSVA (with G). The Synology software warns me that it may not be compatible when I install it. Nevertheless it works fine. I called the Toshiba tech support and they confirm that HDWN180UZSVA and HDWG180UZSVA are technically the same. The first 4 letters HDWN/HDWG are designations for the distributors only (commercial) and don't have a technical meaning.

Despite some of the concerns in early reviews, this drive came beautifully packed. In fact, its the best packing I have ever seen for computer components (and I buy a lot).I added this to my QNAP NAS and the performance and temperatures were great. Unfortunately, it was very very loud - that dull mechanical hard drive noise was easily audible across the room, despite the drive being inside a NAS and in a cabinet with a closed door. As my NAS lives in the lounge it was just too loud to live with so I had to return it.
