For fans of tennis, this game is a Must-Buy!It's a very good representation of tennis and a vast improvement over the last instalment of the Top Spin franchise, the game play is fluid realistic and fun, the controls are simple and easy to pick up though may take some practise getting the timing of shots/serves perfect, the graphics are superb, the style overall is very good. For those who don't take much interest in tennis may still find some fun with this game, it can be very addictive once you get going. The game modes are good, for starters you have the standard exhibition match where you can choose between playing a singles or doubles match and then select the rules/points format to play with and at any of the many number of venues. The roster of players to choose from is pretty good though I think it's not as large as it could be, some key tennis players are missing such as Maria Sharapova and Venus Williams, I don't see why they can't add a larger roster when you look at other games like SmackDownVsRaw2011 which as over 50+ people in their roster. Then there's King Of The Court mode, which is like a party game, you choose 4 tennis stars to play against eachother with a winner stays on premise, it's tie-break rules and the key to being crowned "King of the court" is to win a certain number of matches against the 3 other tennis stars.I cant really talk about playing on Xbox Live for everytime I try to play a match online there doesn't seem to be anyone else playing 'Live' so I can't get a game. The Top Spin Academy mode is basically a training camp for you to learn/practice all the types of ways to play Top Spin, it teaches you how to play different styles tactically and also how to do the more advanced shots. Though once you've mastered it you don't really ever have to go back onto this mode.Creat-a-Player is very good, you start out with a base model and then you can morph them into yourself or anyone that you want to create. Once you've created your player you get to choose his/her clothes and equipment, all clothing is free from the start though there is still more to unlock by completing sponsor challenges/winning tournaments. All the major brands feature such as Nike, Adidas, KSwiss etc. Finally after choosing the clothes you get to choose the style of play, from how they serve a ball to how their mentality during a match is like, for example a passionate player shows more emotions while more focused players don't let their emotions get the better of them. Finally after you've finished creating your player you can use them in any game modes, though the best thing to do is to start their career.Which brings us to Career Mode. Now this mode is very good, you take your created player and rise through the ranks, starting from Newcomer and eventually building right up to being a Legend. You have certain goals to accomplish at each rank which once completed takes you up to a more improved rank. With each match you have you earn XP which is spent on improving your player, you can also hire trainers which help improve your stats giving you an edge over your opponents. The menus may seem daunting at first but once you've figured everything out it's very simple to navigate from doing special events/training to starting in tournaments. Plus if you get stuck, there is an on-screen tutorial explaining and telling you what's what.I really recommend this game for fans of the sport and fans of gaming. It's fun, addictive and career mode which totally immerses you into the world of being a professional tennis star.Gameplay - 5/5Graphics - 4.5/5Sound - 4/5 (The music during the menus in the game is rubbish and gets very annoying very fast, but the sound effects during the matches is very realistic)Overall Rating - 4.5/5

There are a lot of good things about this game. The technique is tough to master - I sat on the bottom rung of career mode for 4 hours before winning a tournament and going to bed, but when I came back to a it few days later I had lost the exact timing you need to play the great shots and was losing again. I found that frustrating, but I would rather have that than finding it too easy. Undoubtedly more talented Xbox-ers will grasp the skills quicker than I did, but it should still represent a good challenge particularly if you want to start as a poor player and build up to facing the top stars - I haven't even seen them yet as I don't want to spoil the surprise! The graphics and movement of the sprites is also good and the rendering of the stadia is also good. The weather and shadows in use can make it quite hard to see the ball, but then that is what real tennis players are facing too so it is a positive feature of the gameplay rather than a criticism.A few bad points: the soundtrack in the menus is annoying, there are Daft Punk and LDC Soundsystem tracks on there (both great bands) but not much else from what I could hear, and these real tracks are always replaced by the single-bar intro tune whenever anything is loading. This gets very repetitive if you're playing for long periods - and as mentioned above, I have found you need to play for a while to get the right rythym going with timing your shots. I'm sure the music can be turned off but it should have been programmed differently in the first place. Some shots don't seem to find the sidelines you're aiming for, as you use the same direction-stick thing (I actually use the d-pad for this game, seems less strain on the thumbs) to manouevre the player as to aim the shots which doesn't give you much time if you're racing across the court, so a lot of opportunities are missed as your sprite hits a tame return right down the middle where the opponent can get to it. Maybe I am doing it wrong or my player will respond better as he improves.Lastly the scoring system in career mode is a bit odd, all the low-ranked tournament matches seem to be a single 'super tie-break' (first to 10). I don't want to play a full match but it would be more realistic to have a first-to-3-games set instead, for example.Overall I am enjoying the game and haven't even played multiplayer, played any games with the top stars/venues or got very far in the career mode yet, so I would recommend Topspin4 as a good tennis title with some longevity. Certainly worth the low price for a new game to throw into a gift bundle.

This is the best tennis game on any platform. In my opinion it is also one of the best sports games ever. Tennis is a pretty tough sport to make a decent computer game out of, and this is the best attempt at recreating the game that I've seen. The control system takes a little time to get used to, helped by the ability to play against a ball machine, and by the tutorial lessons, and once you start to get the hang of it it really does work very well. It gives you a good deal of freedom in terms of shot type and placement and you really do feel in control over where the ball is going. The artificial intelligence it pretty good and significantly better than I've ever seen in a tennis game. The 'real'players included do seem to play at least a little like their real counterparts and offer a good challenge, particularly when you meet them in Grand Slams. The career mode works well, starting out feeling pretty easy but becoming gradually more difficult as you gain access to tougher tournaments. By the time you reach Grand Slams, if you've kept the difficulty level at 'very hard' the whole time, it becomes fiendishly difficult! I've had the game nearly a year now and I've only won one Grand Slam! You are allowed to change the difficulty during a career, but that seems like cheating to me :-) On the whole though, the game gets difficult because the opponents become more consistent, accurate and intelligent with their shot choices and placement, such that you feel like you're being outplayed by a good player, not that it is being made deliberately impossible by a computer. The game is frustrating at times, but I feel this is usually because the game of tennis can be pretty frustrating - not because there is something wrong with the mechanics of the game. The rewards during the career mode are good - it takes some time before you find yourself playing against any recognisable players, so when you do suddenly come up against James Blake, Andy Roddick or Djokovik etc., it is a great moment. Winning a close, hard-fought match against a top player is very satisfying. The graphics are pretty good, without being particularly impressive, and the atmosphere is ok, although it would have been nice if they had commentry or something to bring the game to life a little more.Highly recommended game for tennis fans. I feel it really has been underrated as a sports game/sim.

I have played Top Spin 1, 3 and now 4. Top Spin 4 is such a big improvement over 3 for numerous reasons. Some of these are the changing of the career calendar which allow for much more variety to the season. The games are much harder to play and offer more of a challenge, (I can get a solid difficult game on Very Hard as now as it was too easy on 3). There are still alot of well known players but I find it annoying that Maria Sharapova isn't in the starting rosters of the game and has been replace by one of the Williams sisters. The game has also got rid of holding down LT and RT for power and control shots and instead have to hold the button down for power an tap for control. The game more than ever focuses on the timing of your shots and returns. Trust me this can easily make a shot too easy to return or make it a game winner. Coaches are available to help improve your game and give you special abilities (like greater top spin or being a longer rally specialist) to name a few, this again is a really good innovation and put an end to the spending points in specific slots for leveling up. Now you gain XP from matches and when you have enough you put it Into Baseline Defense, Baseline Offence, or Serve and Volleying. These will give you a permanent boost to your attributes whereas coaches are not and you loose their bonuses once you change coach. Now there is the option of doing doubles tournaments and matches which for me is a huge plus over 3, still not able to put more that 1 player created player out there but still a big improvement for me.I myself liked the little heart rate meter at the top next to the player but that is gone and replaced by a bar to show stamina which stays on the throughout the game, very small so not to really get noticed. As ever the graphics are stunning for a 2k game as the normally always are, the improvement from 3 is huge I'm already hugely taken with this game. Very good game !Despite RAFA NADAL being OP!

I'm a big tennis fan and I've played a lot of tennis games over the years (going back to Super Tennis on the SNES). I think this is definitely up there with some of the better ones.Although tennis games sometimes feel a bit unrealistic, Top Spin 4 is actually a pretty good representation of what the sport is like in real life. I think the main reason for this is that hitting shots well relies on timing (you have to release the button at the correct moment to hit the shot perfectly) rather than just holding down the shot button for as long as possible and watching your player smash it back over the net at 100 miles an hour every time (as in some other games). The end result is a game that's easy to pick up and play, but difficult to master. The only minor complaint I have is that there is no option to choose to play in single player/xbox live/practice modes from the top half of the court (i.e. hitting the ball towards the camera). By default you always have to play from the bottom. This is fine when you're just playing single player, but what me and my friends have found is that when we go to play against each other in multiplayer everyone is so used to playing from the bottom half of the court that nobody can win a game from the other side. The whole dynamic of the match changes from "who can hold/break serve" to "who can win a game from the top half of the court". If there were an option to play in single player/xbox live from the top half then it would have worked a bit better as you could at least get used to it.Overall, though, that's a minor issue and I would recommend this both as a realistic depiction of tennis and a game that's a lot of fun to just pick up and play.

Not sure what game whitetornado is reviewing but it certainly cannot be Top Spin 4! I have to say, this is one of the best sports games I have ever played on the 360 and by far and away the best tennis game!It is not only highly addictive, but incredibly challenging and rewarding. Both career mode and online are brilliant, giving you the ability to develop your own character or use one of the pre-designed pro's. If you get an equally matched opponent online you're in for a treat. I played out a two set thriller with a 3rd set tie break that lasted 48mins - you don't get that with many online games!Graphics are excellent, gameplay and controls are tight and the overall presentation of the product is spot on.The controls are extremely responsive and as you player deteriorates in terms of stamina the placement of the shots become even more crucial and sometimes harder to pull off.If you are new to the Top Spin games or an avid fan I am certain you will be able to pick this up and play instantly - follow the tutorial to begin with though, this helps with a few tips that may enhance your game!I would recommend this to any sports game fan and would advise tennis fans alike that you won't get a more real experience on the 360 for tennis than this!!**HIGHLY RECOMMENDED**

When I bought this game my expectations where high when I noticed the that virtua tennis 4 could be used on kinect as well and top spin 4 couldn't so I assumed the gameplay would be amazing to compare with a kinect game. When I first played on it, it took me a while to get used to all the different shots and buttons you have to use to be able to win games but after a couple of hours of gameplay and looking at the lessens on it I realised what a great game it was.The online play is amazing and so is the career mode. The game is generally really good The only fault I find is that not all the famous players are available to play with for online matches such as venus williams even though serenawilliams is on it however making your own tennis player is really good and the control you have over your career such as chosing coaches and tournaments you wish to enter is great.I play tennis in real ife so the different types of shots etc are great and the movements and graphics are very realistic. For sure it is a great game to buy.

Top Spin 4 is a great tennis game if you want to experience real life tennis emulated on the consoles. It is much more complex as it can be compared to Grand Slam Tennis 2 rather than Virtua tennis from Sega, which is good in some respects. This is not the type of game where you run around and press one button to hit a ball. It requires that you position yourself correctly and time your shots to make them more effective. Each button corresponds to different types of tennis shots. I won't elaborate on those here, but it is pretty complex compared to other tennis games. There are also a wealth of licensed products that you can wear and play with. The roster of players is also pretty large and well selected, however there is some areas where they slack on which is a more interactive gameplay as the career can quickly get boring as it is just play as the years go buy, furthermore on certain levels (Normal/Hard) are often pretty until you play on Grand Slam stage or specifically a high stage.Read full review...

I am loving the TopSpin4 its a superb game much better than its predecessor (TopSpin3). I play almost everyday building my ranking and points. Although my career does not seem to follow the exact seasonal game which is frustrating. Its fantastic however with this new game you're able to build your own player/s and create a better game. Also its a shame that Wimbledon yet again is not on the tour, I believe this to be around their company policy. Such a shame though, its the only major missing!!!Its the best game yet but still finding my feet and once i reach a much better level, I'll start playing interactiveps: Disappointed though the seller did not inform before purchase that my purchase wasa promotional copy :-(

This is a brilliant game if you're a tennis lover. The movement and the shots are realistic, and the game gives you real tension and excitement. You make your way through the levels, from beginner to legend, and when you get the hang of the shots and win your first tournament, you get a real feeling of achievement. I would prefer if the tournaments were full length games instead of being shortened, but the exhibition level does allow for five set matches, so you do get to play them. Just great fun.

all in all a good game for me a tennis fan. the players move, play and swing just as they do in real life. there is atmosphere in the big events and i absolutley love the career mode.the one downside for me with this game is theres no wimbledon, i mean cmon... the best tennis tournament in the world and its not even on there, whats up with that?any way all in all a good game however i would only reccomend it for tennis fans otherwise it can become old really quickly.

Top spin 4 is a massive improvement on Top Spin 3, but it's still got a way to go before it becomes a great tennis experience, having said that don't let it put you off because it is a great game. The controls are much improved from the last game, volleying at the net is now a treat. My only major gripe is the fact that they don't use the real tournaments like Wimbledon. It's a fun tennis game that could be slightly better.

21.7.2011

This is the best tennis game I have played can't put it down only thing that lets it down is no Sharapova but the the top 4 men ,nadal, djokovic, federer and murray are all on it and a few legends you will not be disappointed career mode is exciting but my player is struggling the best way to get points for him/her is playing exhibition matches even if you lose you get 30xps that goes to upgrading your player

29.8.2011

Keeps you entertained for a while and has a number of different things that are new from the previous topspin games however the multiplayer seems very dull as not many use it now and the single player can become very repetitive as always on tennis games. You are best of renting this game for a couple of weeks unless you intend to make full use of the changing seasons in multiplayer.
