This is a robust toy which requires no batteries or refills, it is suitable for boys or girls. The screen is a kind of grey colour and using either the attached pen or the stamps that come with it, you can create all sorts of pictures, though only in black (you can't draw in colour). You clear the screen by pulling down the blue slider at the side. As your child gets older it can also be used for practising writing or for games such as naughts and crosses or hangman - it is really versatile and great for use on car journeys. My 3 year old has had his megasketcher for about 2 years now and it's still used almost daily. The screen is almost as new with only a couple of small dents where it looks like he has pressed down too hard,it still works perfectly.Edit: April 2012. Well I am sad to say our original megasketcher finally broke. When you clear the screen you pull down the blue slider which is attached to a strip of plastic underneath. The strip of plastic needs to move freely down and up, but children have a tendency to put a hand on the screen as they pull the slider which, in our case, resulted in the strip of plastic snapping off rendering the whole thing useless. Since it was a much loved toy, I bought another exactly the same and I am really glad I did as if anything it gets used even more than the first one.My son has recently started learning to write a few words and the megasketcher has been fantastic. We have saved countless sheets of paper and my son gets to practice writing as much as he likes and there are no pens left lying around for his baby sister to find and cause havoc with!

1) This is a must-have toy. If I had to choose "toys for a desert island" for my two children, the first on the list would be a box of Legos, but this is definitely the second choice. Must have taken at least a hundred hours of use and is still going strong but...2) The erasing mechanism is not the best out of the box. It's hard for a 2-year-old or younger to pull for himself and it is very noisy in bad way. One reviewer noted that his/her child was actually scared of the noise, and I can surely understand why. Also some reviews note that one pull doesn't always clear the board. However, this is really easy to fix! On the back of the product there are a few screws that are simple to open with a precision screwdriver, then lift up the blue plastic part on the back covering the side with the mechanism (no need to worry about braking anything) and after that you can just take out the motor that is causing the noise. Now your Megasketcher is silent and can be operated simply by pushing and pulling the eraser handle yourself. While clearing the board now requires several passes, my 1,5-year-old found this method to be much easier. If you're having trouble, try this out, and if you don't like it, just put the motor back.

My kids have had various versions and makes of this type of drawing board, and all eventually leave shadows which won't wipe clean and so eventually we have to replace the board. However, this appears to be the best board we have ever bought. What we all thought was good about this board was :a)the board is not made up of closely packed honeycomb cells which fill up one by one as they usually are. Consequently the lines you draw are cleaner and you can acheive much more detail on this board.b) The frame is a very sturdy strong construction and should not crack and warp as more flimsy models have.c) The magnetic stamps are interesting shapes, (spiral, star, house and an... (not sure)crown/eye?)and are not solid, giving an outline rather than a filled in shape. Most boards give a square, circle etc- very basic. These are more imaginative.Without doubt it is the best magnetic board I have bought and I would recommend it. As a toy I recommend all parents to get one- my children don't object to learning their spelings if they can write the answers on the board, and also we take it in turns to read stories and illustate them using the boards- this encourages their reading. Plus the obvious saving in paper.

Cant recommedt this enoug,.by far its the best thing I bought for my lil girl.i got it for her on her second birthday she really liked to doodle since she started crawling and was all over my sons books much to his chargin as he is not that kind who likes to share his stuff (major drawback of being only child for six years I guess)As soon as she started holding crayon I got her this and since then its been going on strong.its been played with almost everyday for last four years its been dropped now and then on wooden floor kitchen tiles and being sat on etc best part is that it make can most boistrous of boy sit down and draw on it without me worrying that he is going to scribble on the walls.Theonly setback is u have to wipe it like 2-3 times and it makes loud noise which really puts my hubby off esp if he is watching news or his programmes esp if its footbal matchl then it has to be locked away not allowed to bring it anywhere near him.thats it. but that dosent really bother me since this iis my daugters favourite toy.its must if your baby is doodler you wont regret getting it..

Remember this as a kid? It's funny how despite new technological innovations and products, some classics still survive and thrive. For budding little artists and little kids who just enjoy a scribble, this is a toy that will keep them occupied for ages. No batteries to charge, no instructions to read, no supervison required.Simple and easy to draw with the attached stylus, a quick swipe with the button and you're left with a clean slate. Intuitive and easy fto play with for kids, not many movable parts, making it it robust and longer lasting. Big play area and sturdy enough to take a hammering, but light enough to hold ( handle helps with portability)and use for little hands. It's a deceptively simple toy but the reason why it persists, is because it very good at what it does and kids enjoy drawing with it and developing their imagination. You could spend a lot more money on toys that become rarely used and disguarded, but kids ( and adults!) will always be drawn ( no pun intended)) to this

My four year-old son loves drawing and we saw this board at a friend's house and I was impressed with how clear it is compared to the smaller one we already had second hand. Our other one 'bleeds' (ie you draw a line and it doesn't stay as you put it) and is of much lower quality. I looked around for something similar but only found one other which was a fair bit more expensive. So we decided to get it for him. On purchasing my only disappointments about it are you have to wipe the board repeatedly to clear it (which surprised me) and the stamps fall out of their holes quite easily and you have to press them in really hard to stop this. I've had to be very careful they don't get lost and it's a shame they are not attached on string or something.Overall we love the board, it's great for taking out with us and my son does lovely pictures on it!

Got this for my 2 yr old for Christmas as he is always after his older brother's mega sketcher. They are great value for money and a good portable toy. Great to use in the car, or taking away when visiting relatives. My 9 yr old has had his since he was about 3 and a half, he still uses it constantly. And now my toddler has his own, that is being well used too. The amount of money and paper we have saved over the years must be ALOT! He has lost all of the stamps by now, as you have to make sure they are clipped in properly or else they are easy to lose. He doesnt miss them though. They are also a very robust toy, as my elder child's one has been stooden on or dropped many times over the years.Definitely recommend this for any child!

I bought the MegaSketcher in 2007 when my daughters were 3 and new born for £9.74. This toy is still played with (they are now 7 and 5 yrs!). From their first tentative scribbles to full blown works of art.My youngest now uses it for practising letter formations and writing her own little stories...which I'm sure mean something to her! My eldest uses it as a form of communication, I quite often find little messages left on it by her when I tuck her in last thing at night. They don't necessarily play with it constantly but return to it time and time again. I thought it was a bargain 5 years ago but it certainly has stood the test of time and for that, it makes it difficult to beat.A good lasting buy - highly recommended.

This is a great size sketcher, I brought is for my then 2 year old and it's lasted so well. 3 years later and another child and it survived until it got jumped on while it was not laying flat! The magnetic pieces you get clip in really well so do not fall out and the shapes look exactly like they are supposed to. The pen is nice and strong, well made and thin tip which allows good drawing. The string was a bit shorter than I expected but it did not effect use.The eraser works well, and clears all of the drawing on it. The sketcher is a good size for carrying, by myself and my children. One of the better sketchers I have purchased and would recommend for any parents out there wanting a strongreliable one.

Cleaning action requires a couple of passes to completely erase the drawing, and yes it is a bit stiff, so usually this is something that we play with together with our son. Maybe that is why they say 3 years plus, but supervised I can't see any problem using it with younger children. Effectively it is all the fun of pencil and paper without wasting paper. So, drawing freehand, using the four 'stamps' provided (good with very young children), drawing around hands, practicing recognising letters and numbers, and (one day) practicing writing. Lots to do. Given the stiffness of the cleaning movement, I thought it might break, but it has survived fine for more than a year now with no sign of damage.

We have this one and a Chad Valley (argos) one which was much cheaper. In comparison with the cheaper one, this one:- takes 2-3 times as long to clear the screen (and more effort for little hands), though my 2 year old can do it- the 'pen' is finer - more pen-like, (like a standard felt tip width)- bigger screen (about twice the area)- The shapes are more detailed/interesting and click into their place so they're less likely to get lost. On the cheaper model they just rely on gravity. The main down side other than the screen-clearing, is that, if a child presses too hard, it is possible to dent the screen (which isn't possible with the cheaper one). But this takes a lot of strength.

My son has owned one of these for about six years. I am buying a new one because the children have used it so much that the nib on the pen is a bit worn and makes a scratchy sound (which I hate) and the screen is a bit loose and you have to press it down when trying to erase a picture. This is all reasonable wear and tear through constant use and I'm happy to replace it with a new one knowing that it will last for another few years. The screen is approximately 30cm wide and 18cm deep and the children enjoy drawing pictures on it and practising their letter formation and writing. I've even given them sums to do on it and there is no paper waste.

I remember having a Magnadoodle when I was a child and wanted one for our two year-old for Christmas. It's recommended for 3 year-olds on the product but he was two and a half at Christmas and loves playing with it. He loves scrawling on it but even more he loves it when you spend time drawing something nice for him only to drag the level down the board and erase your creation. Some times you need to move the eraser up and down a couple of times to clear a picture but that's a small issue. Comes with four designed stampers which he has lost a couple of but thankfully the pen is attached with a string. TOMY Megasketcher is a great gift.

19.3.2014

I like the 4 extra shapes that you get and the fact that they clip in securely. However, have lost two of them already...+ It's large. Much larger than a lot of the basic drawing pads you can get and so there's lots of space for drawing on.+ The resolution is good as well and the thinest lines are not too blocky so you can get some level of detail into the drawings.+ Sturdy. Dropped plenty of times, thrown around, but still in once piece and looks to last for a long time to come.- The pen is attached via a string, the string needs to be a little longer and the shapes need a string as well, else they go missing...

This gives children an easy and fun way to show off their creative skills. They love to show you what they've drawn. This gives hours of entertainment without electronics or batteries. Erases clean and takes a lot of heavy handling. This is a very well made drawing tablet and not one of those cheap brands out there. The shapes are easy to use and store safely in place so they don't get lost. Great for teaching young children their A B C's. They love to learn to write on it too. Highly recommended and at a great price. The built in handle allows it to be carried easily and it's even great to use on long car trips.
