This is yet another brilliant toy from Tomy which is one of our much loved toy brands in our home. The beauty of this toy is that not only is it fun but it also teaches colours and recognises colours which I think is very clever. I have attached a video review to this written review which can be viewed either via a desktop computer or if you have your phone/tablet in desktop mode. There is also a photo slideshow at the end of the video should anyone wish to just look at the photo's rather than view the video. The balloon lights up in 7 different colours; Red, Purple, Pink, Blue, Green, Orange and Yellow and it also comes with 7 colour co-ordinating pictures cards which correspond with the light up colours; Red Ladybird,Purple Octopus, Pink Flamingo, Blue Whale, Green Frog and Yellow Duckling. The balloon has three different modes that are selected by pressing the purple cloud button on the front underneath the bear. You can also press the bear itself to re-set the game without having to change the current mode if needed. The first mode is the Discovery mode which makes the bear say "Lets Explore!" and then whatever colour your child puts the hot-air balloon onto, the bear will announce the colour and the balloon will also light up to the same colour. Your child can either put the balloon onto maybe a piece of clothing in one of the 7 colours listed above or they can put the balloon on the included animal cards to play this game and in my attached video I show how this mode works. The second mode is the Finder mode which makes the bear say "Lets find lots of colours together!". The bear will then ask your little one to find a colour such as red and if your little one puts the bear onto a different colour than red the bear will say "oopsie" and then will say "well done" when your little one finds the correct colour and also will light the balloon up to match the colour too.The final mode is the music mode which makes the bear say "music time!" and the balloon will then slowly cycle through all of the 7 colours and play music alongside for approximately 5minutes. The music will speed up when the balloon is lifted off it's flat surface or stay at a steady pace if left alone. I really wish Tomy had included a volume button on the balloon as this would have made a perfect nightlight if the volume could be slightly turned down however at the volume it is set at I think it's a bit too loud for a nightlight so Tomy if you are reading this review then please add a volume switch as it would make this toy perfect to double as a nightlight. The balloon also lights up at it's base as if it is firing up to take off with an orange flame glow and makes a flame hissing noise like a real hot air balloon does which I think is a really good little touch. The little bear at the front is not removable but can be pressed to re-set any mode your child is playing with and the little purple cloud button changes between the modes. The balloon also has a handle at the back to help your little one carrying it around. The balloon is aimed at 18months and older and it takes 3 AAA batteries which it comes supplied with. The balloon is a brilliant educational toy and the colours that it lights up to are really pretty and bright and the bear also speaks with an English voice. Another brilliant toy from Tomy and please note that on my attached video review the colours don't show as they do in real life as the green shows a lovely green colour in person but looks blue on my video. Also when the music light show is on there is no flickering between the colours in person but it looks like there is on the video - I shall have to purchase a new video recorder sorry!

I absolutely love the Hot Air Balloon from Tomy. The balloon itself is a really good size with a handle on the back of it for little hands to easily move it from item to item. It arrives in demo mode so will only say hello, light up as though the gas is on and ask you to land on a colour. Being a demo though it then just lights up in the chosen colour and says well done. Switching it on though you can then scatter the animal boards on the floor and when asked to land on a colour, land on one and will tell you whether you are right or wrong. Discovery mode just requires it to be placed on any solid colour and it will light up in that colour and say it out loud and finally music mode where the balloon plays music for 5 minutes and lights up.I love the two options. Set it down and the music plays slowly or lift it up and the tempo increases. One downside is the gas noise - if you don't do anything, it will continue to make the annoying noise. We also find that when e.g being asked to land on pink, the flamingos have light and dark pink on them and the sensor picks up the darker colour as red. Being surrounded by various coloured backgrounds can also tell you you are wrong if you don't have the sensor directly over the right colour but it doesn't seem to affect her confidence much after explaining about why it's not picking up the correct colour. There are 7 thick boards with the friendly looking animals on them and they are all very friendly. The frog and Fox look like they are waving. Other than that, you do have to listen carefully to the commands as the speech isn't totally clear at times. It's very user friendly but can be a bit samey so it has lost its appeal on discovery mode at times but I do still really like it for helping the little one with colours. It adds to the appeal when seeing a hot air balloon in the sky.

Some modern toys can feel a little like witchcraft; while I had to make do with a ball and a piece of string, today’s child can get a hot air balloon that can tell what colour it is sat on. I can just about understand a toy that knows if it is on a surface or not, but to tell the colour of that surface; perhaps the ‘TOMY Colour Discovery Hot-Air Balloon’ is magic? If proof was needed that it works, the toy comes with cards included, all of which sport a different animal that is a different colour e.g. a yellow chick or a green frog. Placing the hot air balloon onto one of these card makes the balloon itself change to that colour and for the little bear rider to state the colour. It all looks particularly impressive if the room is a little darker. When you pick up the balloon the character starts to narrate for you and sometimes a little yellow light appears that looks like the balloon’s flame. When the colours change it can light up a darker room in one of 6 or so shades. I did find that the red and pink had the habit sometimes of being mistaken for one another – perhaps the ‘TOMY Colour Discovery Hot-Air Balloon’ is fallible after all. What you get with this toy is something that is ideal for the curious 18+ month year old. It can not only act as a plaything, but for a child who loves to name and play with colours, this is a great accessory. Hours will be spent using the well-made handle at the back to test all the colours in the house. A less curious child can still enjoy the balloon as a toy in its own right, the build quality is high enough that it will make a good plaything. Dependent on your child’s curiosity this is either a very good toy, or a great one – certainly worthwhile for any parent who has words like Blue and Red shouted at them regularly.

This Tomy Colour Discovery Hot Air Balloon comes well presented and includes 3 AAA batteries. The Balloon is targeted at children from 18 months upwards and d packaging claims it "enhances communication", "develops logical thinking" and "stimulates memory". The toy is colourful and apart from the sphere features a teddy bear which speaks a selection from over 50 phrases and lights up in 7 colours. The Balloon comes with 7 coloured animal tiles. The principle behind the "balloon game" is that you ask your child to say a colour then land the balloon on the appropriate tile, the balloon sides will glow the same colour as the tile, then the balloon will call out the correct colour. The second variation on this theme is that the child can also identify the seven animals pictured on the coloured tiles. Apart from the tiles, the balloon can recognise colours on other surfaces too.Overall, this toy works quite well although the differential between pink and red is ambiguous which can be confusing to the child. There's an on/off switch which is clearly designed for adult operation and the toy can be started by pressing small purple cloud under the teddy bear if the on/off switch is on.We gave this to a two year old boy to play with, it certainly caught his attention and he seemed to enjoy using it. However, after a while we wondered if 7 tiles are enough to ensure the longevity of this toy - it would be good if a wider range of tiles was available. In summary, the principle behind this toy is clever, it's robustly made and works pretty well (except for the colour ambiguity) but could possibly do with more variety in the supplied tiles.

This is a lovely toy to encourage learning and recognition of colours. It comes with seven cards with pictures of animals on, each in a different colour. There are three modes on the balloon. The first enables the child to put the balloon down on one of the cards and it then says which colour it has landed on. The second mode asks the child to find a particular colour and put the balloon on it. It then lights up with the colour it has landed on, as it does with the first mode. The third mode is music mode and this plays a tune which my little boy loves. When the balloon is held up it plays it louder and faster, and when it is put down the music gets a little slower but it's still quite loud. One thing we did find was that the sensor underneath the balloon can cause confusion as it recognises whichever colour it lands on. That's ok except the picture of the yellow duck has some orange on it, for its beak and feet. Therefore when it asks to be landed on something yellow, you might end up with it saying orange. But it's a minor thing and once you understand how it works you can work around it. The sensor works on anything, not just the cards, so you could probably go around the house picking out colours. Cute and fun, my little boy likes it.

This is a great gift for anyone's young child. It reaches from 18 months to about 3 years old.Let your little one’s imagination take flight with the Colour Discovery Hot-Air Balloon from this well known brand Tomy.Scatter the seven colourful animal tiles around the floor and go looking for one of the colours.Ask your child to call out the colour then land the balloon on the tile… the sides of the balloon will glow the same colour as the tile, then the balloon will call out the correct colour! This is a great game for recognising colours and stimulating memory,You can also go in search of the seven animals pictured on the tiles.Flip them over, mix them up and start again. As well as recognising the colours on the tiles, the balloon is clever enough to recognise colours on other surfaces, too, so the play possibilities are endless. The balloon’s colours will scroll round as you fly.Fun phrases and a lively soundtrack encourage play and there are handles on the side so kids can hang on tight for the ride!“Let’s fly high in the sky!”Overall a brilliant toy that is useful and fun.My nephew loves this. We love this new addition to our daughter's toy collection. The balloon comes with different coloured mats (slightly larger than coasters) and decorated with animals. The balloon changes colour depending on which mat it is placed on.There are several different modes. One encourages the child to move the balloon on to a specific coloured mat (the balloon then changes to that colour if the child gets it right). Another mode is a music mode, playing a song and the third gives the child the freedom to place the balloon on a mat of their choosing - the balloon then changes colour and the colour name is repeated. Our 19 month old is a bit young to know colours but she's intrigued by the toy and the colour changes. As she grows to understand colours, this will be great at refreshing her memory. It's a really sweet little toy and I would not hesitate to give it to a child as a gift. I would say a child of 2 is probably the perfect age.

This is a rather unusual toy. It is quite largish (about 10" high) but has a handy handle on the back. You can play with it by scattering the enclosed coloured tiles and landing your balloon on one of them. The balloon lights up with the same colour. A female voice tells you the colour that you have landed on. (I thought the voice was a little muffled or at least needed to be clearer). This is quite a clever toy as it will also play this game when you land the balloon on other coloured surfaces too. I am pleased that the batteries were included. Many toys come without. Suitable for toddlers.

This seems magical, at least to a child, (and to me too) when the balloon recognises colours it lands on. Put out the coloured play cards (seven included) around the floor, and ask your child to pick one. When the balloon lands on it, it will call out the colour, and glow the same colour too. This works on any surface, so will recognise colours on things other than the supplied animal cards as well. A clever electronic toy, ideal for the inquisitive toddler, and an early educational aid too.(Requires 3 x AAA batteries, which are supplied)

Gave this to a Friend for her grandchild. Supposed to be for 18 month olds, but her 7 month old found it fascinating with all the changing colours and Grandma dong all or at least most of the work, while the little 'un swatted and pawed at it gigglimg and laughing. We believe this is going to be a firm favourite especially when he becomes more co-ordinated and verbal. Will be interesting to see if after so much observation he can operate it without instruction.

As expected of a product from the TOMY brand, this is a very well made item. It is safe, with nothing I would perceive to be unsafe, and no excessive plastic, rubber or chemical smells. I felt confident letting the baby touch it. It's a fun, interactive way to learn about colours and it wasn't irritating for the adults in the room either, even when the baby fixated himself on it for two and a half hours straight.

This is a really cool baby toy and something I know I would have enjoyed as a youngster! The balloon is used for colour and shape matching games, and actually works very well, and can be picked up quite easily. The ballon has a soundtrack, and does glow all different colours which is appealing.I think this will be great for teaching a child to understand colours, it really helps and encourages it!

It took a long time coming well over the delivery estimate I thought it wouldn't come I had to message them about it but it did come and my little one seems to love it and keeps pressing the button and putting her hands on the balloon and giggling when it lights up its just a shame I have to hide it again until Christmas

Not tried yet as it is a Christmas present for our grandson but looks great and is of good quality. As a big kid I suppose I COULD have tried it but I'll leave it for the recipient to try. Then have a try of it. Just to show him how it works obviously!

I have no idea how this toy manages to detect different colours but it does seem to work most of the time. It is a fun way to learn colours, and keeps a 2 year old amused for quite a while. A good toy for inquisitive young minds
