It's hard to explain Ghost Recon as a concept -- it's neither the full-on, blood'n'guts, kill 'em all-type game as are many of the Doom/Quake clones -- Soldier of Fortune 2, for example -- nor does it require the in-depth strategic planning approach required by other Red Storm/Tom Clancy titles from the Rainbow Six stable.I thoroughly enjoyed the demo when that was released but, given this is not usually my preferred game genre (I'm a military flight-sim fan, gernerally), I deferred purchase until the "bundled" version was released.Well worth the wait. Some superb level design keeps the gameplay compelling and addictive; the "Just one more level..." factor. Not easy, mind, certainly if, like me,you start with the default "Veteran" level, you quickly learn that the AI is pretty damned smart and this ain't no turkey-shoot. The very first (and large)map had me scratching my head and cursing a great deal before I figured it out. "Save Game" is your friend. If, like me, you're don't like to lose team members, then you *will* find yourself going back time and time again to try that same map differently, learning from your mistakes.Despite the fact that the levels are somewhat sequential -- action a) triggers event b), etc. -- this isn't generally apparent and the bad guys don't always spawn in the same spot, making it difficult for "campers".You also have to adapt your tactics accordingly dependant on the environment you're fighting in -- careful, quick moves in the urban, door-to-door settings and more assertive and decisive in the open battlefield maps.Similarly, your choice of team has to be carefully considered; there are times when having a sniper along is a definite handicap, others where he's a necessity. You also need to give thought to what weapons to deploy -- do you used silenced or unsilenced weapons? Do you *need* a guy with a "saw" along? Will I need demolitions charges? I found that having anti-tank weaponry along on every mission was prudent...The friendly AI is generally good and they usually make good use of cover when needed. However, they're occasionally unpredictable and you find yourself switching control from character to character just to try and ensure they don't do something dumb. This doesn't always work and every so often you'll lose a guy and wonder just why they chose that particular moment to stick their head up from behind that rock. All in all an excellent package and well worth the money.

After almost two years of playing 'Ghost Recon' and its expansion packs 'Desert Siege' and 'Island Thunder', I've come to the conclusion that it is one of the most underrated games around. Even to this day I'm still finding new features or ways of playing the missions. Not for the run-and-gunner, this game is better suited to the careful, stealthy player in both the single player campaign or in multiplayer. It is this slower pace - coupled with exceptioinally realistic graphics and sound - that generates the atmosphere of tension and immersion found only in a 'Tom Clancy' title. With the huge gaming and modding community for this title, I can still see years of life ahead for 'Ghost Recon'.
