'Commemorative playing cards featuring iconic images of the greatest of all White Star liners, RMS Titanic, and her sister ships. They convey the beauty of the doomed ship and a nostalgic world of elegance and confidence, to be shattered by an iceberg on a cold, calm April night in 1912.'So says the blurb on the side of the packet, which also bears information relating to 'The Titanic Historical Society' with the inference, certainly as far as I am concerned, that these cards are endorsed by them. As well they might be because, in historical terms, they really are excellent. Each card has its own individual image, ranging from photographs of the survivors (like Margaret Brown)to images of the various relevant ships' crews (Titanic, Carpathia and California). Cards like the three of spades ('Isidor And Ida Strauss - Perished)' are actually quite hard to look at. But then I imagine that's the whole point. She was quite a lady, Ida, wasn't she? 'We have lived together for many years. Where you go, I go.' Why can't we all find a love like that?I don't suppose they were ever designed for use in actual card games, although they do have a nice feel to them. I was a little concerned that, by playing cards with them, I might be perceived to be somehow tarnishing the memory of the awful events of April 15th 1912. However, I am only recently divorced and so currently need every spare penny I can lay my hands on. Hence the fact that, if I so much as catch a glimpse of someone who looks a bit naive in the gambling department, these cards and I are straight in there. Which does actually highlight the one significant flaw in the design of these cards: for all their historical relevance and their sobering effect on the modern psyche, what with the images taking up most of the surface area of each one, it is somewhat difficult to be sure just what card you have turned over. And that sort of thing can mean life or death, in the high-stakes games of 'Snap' that I play.

I am a bit of a collector of all things Titanic, I have many books & films relating to the subject and was delighted to come across these excellent playing cards. I bought three sets of these, one to keep, one to give to a friend and one set to make a collage (picture) with. I am always on the look out for things that would make some interesting collage material. It helps to pass the time away amongst other things I do in my retirement. They are really excellent quality and I just thought I could display these in a picture frame, as something unique really. I bought an old mahogany picture frame complete with glass of just about the right size in good condition, for £1 from a car boot.I got rid of the picture (horrible) and with a few extra materials, such as a new back board and picture surround, it has made a very nice display picture. Total cost including cards, £9.78p. It looks quite nice in the hall and catches everyone's eye when they see it. I have a similar collage made up of other Titanic material, from a collection of various posters, newspaper clips, tickets, menu cards, (all replica material) and many other similar memorabilia about the ship, and this I have displayed in another room. I have made many collages in this way, from other similar memorable topics and collectable memorabilia, which I have sold for a handy little profit at various craft fairs around the country. I made one nice collage based on The Automobile Association, from various post cards and other connected material on the topic, which I sold just recently, to a chap who used to be an AA Patrol man. (Yes a very very nice man, excuse the pun).So if this has given you an idea of how to use a set of these cards, or any other items, then I hope you enjoy making a collage with them in the same way as I have done. Besides, it can become a very enjoyable hobby.
