This was a present for my 10 year old nephew. He prefers factual books to fiction, and has a strong interest in history as well as problem solving. This seemed like a good value way to encompass many of his interests. The model itself is fairly easy - best to make it a joint effort, though, because there is some gluing involved and a piece in the wrong place will be difficult to rectify later. The end result is great! As well as being quite powerful (this can be adjusted to some extent), it's also surprisingly accurate. It's easy to see how it stores energy and how it releases it. There are also a few areas in which improvements could be made to the design (the trigger mechanism, for example),which is good for encouraging a critical eye.As an added bonus it looks really good assembled, too. With a bit of wood stain it really could look very authentic!I've only given it 4 stars for 'fun', because once it's built it really only does one thing! Similarly for 'durability' - it is made of light modelling wood, after all, and I can't see it surviving a fall off a table very well! It's a very nice way to spend a bit of time together on a birthday or christmas afternoon!

Although this says 12+, my 10 year old made this with very little help, and it works. The instructions are clear, the bits are all there, it's not too fiddly and you quickly have an effective catapult. (I wish I could say the same about the Revell Da Vinci kit he got at the same time, supposedly for 10+.)It can be built without the glue first to be sure you've got everything in the right place, but when we discovered we'd put part of the frame on the wrong side (our fault - the instructions highlight the need to be careful on this) it was easy enough to take apart and reassemble quickly, despite the glue.If I had a suggestion for improvement, it'd be to add some brackets to hold the frame firm,as it can distort a little when the catapult is fired - but that's not a fatal flaw. Fun for all the family!

Me and my 7-year-old put this together over a couple of evenings. It's very solidly put together with dowels and glue. It would be a bit too hard for him to do on his own - you have to read the instructions a little carefully, and getting some of the dowels in requires a bit of muscle (or the handle of a hammer, of course). He really enjoyed it, and learnt plenty about construction, strength, elasticity of different kinds of wood, ratchets, levers, knots etc.Without any tuning it fires the plasticine balls about 5 meters, and I've been hit in the chest at 4 metres range...

I like it. I'm a bit of a sucker for historic based working models. And this is a good one. You don't even need to glue it together (though you can). All joints are slot together and most with additional wood dowel pegs, to hold them in place. Nice finish to the wooden pieces too. Not too hard to put together, a couple of tricky bits. I like that they've actually thought about making the 'spring' bow limbs from bamboo rather than just wood, like the rest of the model. It works well too. All I need now is bigger version or two and I could really do battle. Very pleased.

Great little project for children (although younger ones will need assistance). All the parts are pre-made and no tools are required. The trigger mechanism requires a good pull so you need to steady the frame while you fire it but otherwise, it seems pretty good.Having trodden most of the clay ammunition that came with it into the carpet, my son improvised and claims the catapult will fire Lego, marbles and small dinosaurs with equal ease.

A really good fun to make and it is great for people like me who used to make kits when I was younger. It is a good project for a day and the instructions are very easy to understand. The only down side is that you need to sand down the wooden dowles once you have completed it to make it look nicer. It is also easy to paint and you can fire the catapult at a very high speed depending on how sight you do the strings. Highly recommend.

Purchased for a youth. Instructions were clear enough that a child can build the catapult him or herself. The catapult will shoot across the room, and you can adjust the tension to adjust the distance. Good exercise in motion parabolic equations. Good introduction to engineering your own catapult based on Da Vinci's idea.Shipping was as indicated. Product was as pictured.

Found this the ideal present for my partner who loves all types of model making and is a genuine lover of historical weaponry. It is still in it's packaging- which was very good- as it will be wrapped for Christmas. I did check it briefly and it all looks fine. Despatch was quick and the price was a good one. Well satisfied as I hope my partner will be.

A Brilliant xmas stocking present for my 20-something son. It took him about 20 mins to assemble on the kitchen table as we prepared Xmas lunch. Once ready we found it fired hazelnuts across the kitchen perfectly, resulting in a highly entertaining competition to catch the nuts in the mouth, between me, other son and dog. Excellent!!

Real quality product - easy to make if you apply a little common sense and think it through. We worked through it without glue and then when we were sure we glued it together. Children love it. Hours of playing fun had. Catapult rod does break occasionally (rough play to blame) but this is easily replaced and the rest is robust.

Built with my grandchildren, Da Vinci's catapult is a brilliant design, project was engagingly interesting, clay balls nice & soft. Made a cardboard castle to bombard, going to make a ply wood base so we can gain greater control, a top notch toy with grown up aspirations.

Really good kit the instructions are a little tricky my 12 year old managed to complete on his own though. He played all the items out at first to make sure he knew what was what then he put it together without glue to make sure it was correct. Fires really well and fun.

Bought this for my grandson and he enlisted the help of his granddad to build it. I would have given it 5 stars but for the fact that they are finding it very difficult to tension the cord which means he can't fire it yet. They'll keep trying though until they succeed.

Was buying this for my nephew's 12th birthday but my husband saw it and also requested one. They both seemed pretty pleased with it so very happy with the purchase. Our two young sons were also very keen to have a go.... Seems like a very good boy's toy type present.

This is such a brilliant gift for all ages . Originally bought for a 8 yrs boy who was into using his hands and engineering type things rather then academic things loved it completely, bought another for his best friend birthday, then bought one for myself
