There's a lot going on here. On one hand this is a high-end controller with better inputs than a first-party pad, but not quite all the features of a standalone "pro" pad. On the other hand, this is a customisable pad you can rearrange, but which which doesn't quite offer the range of options you'd expect from the concept. It's also a little limited as an ordinary PS4 controller. You will want to think carefully about what features you actually need and what games you want to play before purchasing this. The eSwap's pro controller credentials are respectable at this price. It's certainly a hefty pad and will not be suitable for players with small hands, but it's mostly solid and comfortable, and doesn't creak or rattle even when the vibration function is running. The sticks, d-pad and hand-grips are held on by magnets, the triggers with screws, and although the hand-grips are wiggly, the other parts are so solid you'd never realise they can be removed. The analogue sticks are smooth and precise across their generous range, far better than the Dual Shock 4, and have a great texture. They genuinely make it easier for me to make subtle movements on racing games and competitive shooters. The analogue triggers also move very evenly, although they're big bigger and slightly more heavily-sprung than I'd normally like. The buttons have a short and unambiguously clicky action and are well-placed, given the pad's size. The response is ideal for shooters, but I found the d-pad too fussy for 2D games, both too squishy and too clicky. The four buttons on the back, which take the place of the finger levers on slightly fancier pads, are far better than you'd think from the product photo. They have a scooped design that made them much easier to find than I expected (see my photos). By default they're mapped to the four face buttons to save you taking your hands off the stick to jump or interact in FPSes, but there's a second configuration saved on the pad that maps them to the four triggers, and you can change them to many of the other buttons with the PC software. The hardware customisation options are intriguing but don't go quite as far as I'd like. As soon as I took the pad out of the box I put the two analogue stick modules on the same side out of curiosity, and to my considerable surprise, this worked, and was even recognised as a supported configuration by Thrustmapper. (The app complains if you hook up the pad with a module missing, and I'm going to guess it doesn't like having three analogue sticks attached, but this is fine.) The left-most stick was recognised as the left stick and the other stick was recognised as the right stick, while the d-pad continues to act as a d-pad on the "wrong" side of the controller. Together with the finger buttons on the back and the software button-remapping options there are a whole lot of possibilities for accessibility here.Unfortunately there aren't many other hardware customisation options. Principally, you can go from a PS4 to an Xbox stick layout, but given that the d-pad is too fussy for 2D games I don't change often. You can't move the face buttons at all, meaning you can't put both sticks on the right, or use a WiiU style sticks-up layout. You can't mechanically adjust the stick tension or trigger range, although you can remap the stick response in the PC app, and a hair-trigger function on the triggers can be toggled in the pad with a button combination. The modules they sell separately don't add too may options: a different d-pad, longer triggers, and two extra face buttons for fighting games. Why not four extra face buttons, or sticks with different tension? I get the feeling Thrustmaster approached this in terms of supporting specific genres rather than giving a blank slate of options. The software customisation options are definitely more limited than I'd like. You get two completely independent profiles that you can switch between with a dedicated button on the pad, with their own stick and trigger response and button mappings. However the button mapping features are limited to exactly that - one physical button to another. There's no ability to map anything to a button combination, stick direction, or macro. The option, share, PS button, and pad click are also all off-limits. I'd really hoped for more, especially for my favourite button-combination-heavy game, Elite Dangerous. There are also a couple of basic feature limitations that prevented me using this as my everyday controller. As this is a wired pad with no motion sensing, I have to keep another controller on hand for the likes of Death Stranding. I did use the eSwap with Elite Dangerous, but it meant giving up on motion-controlled head-look, which is too limiting. (There's no light bar either, although that's no great loss.) Connected to a PC, you get the worst of both worlds: the eSwap doesn't count as a PS4 pad as far as the Remote Play and PS Now apps are concerned, but the PC doesn't see the four extra buttons on the back as independent buttons, just duplicates of the existing PS4 ones.So it's hard to give a definitive verdict on this. As a pro controller it's respectable enough for the price, but possibly not the best. As a customisable pad, there aren't enough features to really open up interesting possibilities, but there's some stuff you can do here that's just not possible on other pads. More remapping possibilities would make a huge difference, but the limited number of layouts and add-on modules in the hardware is the real disappointment. One to mull over carefully. I'll be keeping an eye open for firmware updates.

This is a high quality wired game controller for PS4 and PC that has an unusual feature: it has swappable components. There are the two thumbsticks, the D pad, the L2 and R2 triggers, and two grips on either side of the handles. What is the point of swapping these components? Well, you can buy component packs separately and they come in different colours. So that is half of it. Second, you can rearrange the position of the left thumbstick and D pad. Since that’s not something I want to do, and I don’t care much about the colours, that makes the swap feature a bit pointless for me.That said, this is still a great controller. The tact switches are high quality, and the manufacturer claims a lifetime of 50 million activations on all buttons, and 2 million activations on the sticks. Ease of swap might also prove a neat feature if one were to develop a fault too. Most important, it seems that Guillemot has taken a lot of care over the design. The textured grips give the controller a firm and comfortable feel. The buttons and switches are precise and responsive, making the controls on the standard Sony PS4 controller seem soft by comparison. You also get four buttons on the underside, which means you can keep your thumbs on the thumbsticks for a slight advantage. The controller also works on PC and you can download an app which lets you remap buttons and tweak the settings to your preference – I only tested this briefly as I mainly want the controller for PS4 use. There are a couple of limitations. First, to emphasise that this is a wired-only controller. It comes with a lengthy and high quality braided 3m cable, and wired is preferable for low latency, but you obviously have to put up with a bit more clutter and a bit less flexibility. Second, there is no light bar though there are blue and white profile LEDs either side of the PS button.Neither of these are a big deal to me and I really like the controller. It does of course cost a lot more than a standard controller, but you won’t want to go back to a standard one after trying it. Great controller, but not for the swap feature.

Thrustmaster have designed a great controller for PS4 and pc here. The box it comes it looks night quality and feels great already. The controller is well packaged and looks high standard, it feels amazing holding it and will allow hours of gaming without sore thumps and palms. This controller is adjustable with different buttons etc but I cannot really say to much about how that impacts gameplay as that’s very individual for everyone’s gameplay. I would say it’s similar to the Xbox one elite controller to be fair as it has similar features saying that I’m a casual gamer so some people may not share my opinion.I think the controller if good value for money as it’s excellent quality and build tolast you not like some of the cheaper controllers.Any gamer would be happy to receive this controller I’m sure so it would make a lovely gift.

Excellent controller although a bit pricey for what you get . I've tried the nacon pads and also the razor ones . they were good pads with lots of pro features ,but i prefer the thrustmaster simply because of the tension on the sticks. They are almost dual shock tension . performance wise on new COD MW is very good ,very comfotable even after a few hours non stop play .I like the fact that you can buy the extra mod packs and customise the style ,comes with a nice cable and tool to change the trigger and take out the d-pad.Not tried the mapping software yet but looks simple enough ,the pad could have come with paddles on the back but instead you get 4 buttons,This would be five star if it wasaround the £100.00

Great controller and very comfortable for people with bigger hands, being able to change position of the analog sticks and d pad or even change them with different upgrade packs is really useful.the buttons on the back can get in the way sometimes when picking up the controller or adjusting your hands. The controller is a fair weight which i personally prefer, the software which you have to download from the thrustmaster website is very good for making adjustments or changing button layout. the usb cable is very sturdy and the buttons give a good click when pressed.overall a great controller and is very responsive.

Solid unit for PC or PS4; fully customisable in terms of functionality of buttons and its looks, great connection, but not wireless, which only means sharp signal, tbh. The reason for four ? is that side panels easily come off in your hands of you grab onto it too hard and it can stop you in your steps, which is....not good when you are being tested for your reaction, right?

Originally purchased for my older son as it looked liked something he would like to use for his PC gaming. While he did like it and it felt a lot like his console controllers, he actually prefers gaming using the keyboard and mouse when he is on his PC. I have however found that my younger daughter loves it as it makes it easier for her to use her pc and play games

First thing I noticed on picking this up is the weightiness of the unit, it feels well made and ready to do your bidding. It is a wired only controller, but the wire is quite long and shouldn't restrict your game playing unless you have a bigger than average room. The controls feels very responsive too. The option to swap out the buttons and sticks is a great idea.

Great controller on initial impression. It’s heftily built, with options to program buttons and hot swap elements. Early days using it with the PC , but my other half likes it a lot.

17.12.2019

This controller is very robust. It’s well made and comfortable to use. Maybe a little overpriced though, but a good piece of kit nonetheless.

12.12.2019

Very odd controller, takes a little getting used to at first but when you adjust it's really comfortable to use and ,more preferable.
