I bought this for a backpacking trip in Colorado because I had heard people talking about how lightweight it was and how well it kept you insulated from the ground. And for the $20 price tag I figured I might as well give it a try. Upon testing it out it was fairly comfortable, extremely light (I mean seriously VERY light), and what can I say? My back certainly did not get cold 10,000 feet up in the Rockies on an October night. I did not feel any coolness from the ground. I slept in my sleeping bag right on top of this (no inflating mattress) and I was happy with it.My only negative thing to say about this is that it is NOT very compact. Even rolling it as tightly as I could, it was still very large. That is my reason for not giving it 5 stars. HOWEVER the light weight factor does balance this out, and if you hang it from the bottom of your bag it does make a good cushion for those mid-hike breaks! And also you have to take into consideration that for better insulation, a thicker material is obviously required.Overall a great purchase for the price! If I was going to spend $20 on another sleeping pad, I'd buy it again!

How effective can a half inch of foam be? I was going on my first true hiking trip with my son, and bought this based on its weight, price, and generally good reviews, thinking that if I keep hiking I would upgrade. After sleeping on this for two weeks, I'm not sure I need that upgrade. I'm 5'11" and about 190 lbs., pushing 50 years old, and a side sleeper. This pad eases just enough of the bumps and hardness of the ground for me to be comfortable. And, it is truly a tough piece of equipment. Ours not only got used to sleep on, but to stack equipment on while setting up or breaking camp, as a lounger leaned against a tree, and rolled and used as a seat. They wipe clean, shed dry dirt with a shake, and don't suffer any loss of function if they get punctured by a stick or stone.

I purchased the RidgeRest pad to use in a camping hammock, and it did exactly what I needed it to do: stabilize the hammock, providing a flatter sleeping surface, and provide insulation, preventing the dreaded "cold butt" phenomenon well-know to hammock campers. It was comfortable to sleep on, the "regular" size fit perfectly inside the built-in sleeve in my Hammock Bliss hammock, and I did not get too hot (which is always a concern for me) even though overnight temps were in the 70s and I had a rain fly over the hammock. It's not as cushy as an inflatable pad, but that is not really an issue in a hammock. It seems very durable, and I hope to get many years of service out of it!

I tested this pad in Odda, Norway during holiday. I knew the ground was going to be chilly so I wanted a pad that was both comfortable and kept me both warm and dry.Pros:- It's light. It hardly adds to your pack weight.- It definitely keeps the ground chill away. Between this and my sleeping back, I was warm all night.Cons:- It's really not all that comfortable, but better than the hard ground.- It doesn't roll up tight, so it can be bulky on your back pack.- It doesn't come with straps, so you have to buy the straps separately or just rely on your backpack straps. For the price, it's really worth it, especially if you're camping out somewhere a bit chilly.

Whether you're on the ground or in a hammock, the weight of your body crushes any sleeping bag insulation to practically zero. You need a pad. The RidgeRest isn't as cushy as an inflating mattress, but it insulates and will never leak (and again, crush to zero, leaving no insulation). If you're prone to sweating and skin breakouts when sleeping on foam, this doesn't happen on the RidgeRest. The waffle pattern allows moisture to escape. It also holds the pad in place between the layers of a dual-layer hammock and keeps it from sliding around. Even if you use an underquilt with your hammock, this is good to have on hand when you have to go to the ground.

Had one in the army. Also had the new issues air mattress as well. Depending on what bag you have, one mattress might be better than the other. Meaning my rush72 bag is better suited for the air mattress being rigged on to it under the bottom of the bag than the rolled mattress this review is based on. depending on what you’re doing, bugout bag, casual camping, stealth camping, emergencies, this mattress might not be for you but the mattress itself is of good quality and build so the mattress alone is really good and worth buying. You pick what you need a mattress to do.

Exactly as described. I have a four piece, surplus US extreme cold military sleep system bag, so I slipped this regular sized pad into the outer, weatherproof bivy, allowing me to roll around in the inner bags without rolling off the pad. The discomfort of uneven surfaces is certainly minimized and it seems this pad is durable enough to last a very long time. No hesitation recommending this closed foam pad as a solid investment for those of us who desire a little comfort when "roughing it".

I was looking for a basic sleeping mat to keep myself off the ground. I went with the large (I'm 6'2") and it works well. I used this after a recent ultra endurance race and was still comfortable sleeping on it even with a very sore body. It is not soft by any means, but keeps you warm and provides just enough cushion to take the edge off. It's a bit bulky, but it weighs practically nothing. If I was a pickier sleepier I'd probably wish for something softer, but for my uses it works well.

Exactly what I expected. Very firm, but creates a nice shield against uneven campsite groundspace. I accidentally marked it up with my fingernail (big streak across it), just by handling it, but it doesn't affect its use. It is relatively bulky in comparison to the inflatable Therm-a-Rest pads, but my daughter and I are happy with it and will use it again. Pads like this do seem narrow to me, but I guess that just how they're sized so that they're not entirely too bulky.

You get what you paid for. Recently went on a backpacking trip and purchased 2 of these to stay on budget. Ended up only using one because I found a self inflating pad my dad had. My boyfriend ended up with this pad and I had the self inflating pad. There is a difference and the self inflating pad is better but the Therm-a-Rest did what we needed it to do. It provided some cushion from the ground and at $20, you really can't beat that. If your on a budget, this will do.

Great bed mat. It rolls up very easily, weighs next to nothing, and the little grooves help trap body heat under your sleeping bag. I got cold one morning while cooking on my little camp stove, and wrapped it around me and the stove and it not only blocked the wind but kept me from feeling so chilly. Just be careful leaving it out near cats! Mine tried to use it as a scratching post and they frayed the material. (It's a lightweight but durable foam-like material.)

I've never used one as a sleeping pad, so my review is for using this as a sit pad. My wife and I split this up into 4 pieces, 2 very small, and 2 more that are a little bigger and use them as sit pads for backpacking and hunting. I feel like I discover a new use for them every time I'm in the woods beyond the obvious padding/protection from wet surfaces for sitting down (i.e. fanning a fire to stoke it up, kneeling on it to pack up gear)

I used these on a recent hike to Los Padres National Forest where nighttime temperatures ranged between 35 - 40F and I am very glad that I purchased this. It is about 0.6" thick resulting in a more comfortable sleep since you don't feel the ground under your tent. This sleeping pad is light enough that you don't feel the burden on your backpack. I paid $15 for mine and for that price, I think that this is the best sleeping pad to buy.

The mattress is very bulky for someone who is trying to go light with their hiking/camping gear. But it did its job. This is not a heavy mattress at all and I almost didn't feel the weight having it at the bottom of my pack. The only thing it needs is a cover for the elements since I had it exposed and didn't have a cover for it. I would definitely recommend this to a friend assuming that the "bulkyness" of it does not bother them.

love how warm this is!! if you hammock, it’s a really good insulator plus a sleeping bag. my friends and i sleep with this in 30°f temps at night with this under us. the only bad thing is it’s hardly comfortable if you were to sleep on the ground or rocks. but that’s why it’s called ‘thermal’ i suppose! if you hammock in cooler weather, this is a need. it also gives the hammock some shape so you sleep more comfortably.
