This is a really fun expansion pack for the original The Sims and I love every feature in it, but it's not without some issues. The game, like the original sims, installed well on my windows 98 and Vista PCs. I don't know about newer windows as I haven't tried this on a newer system, but you'll have to check whether the latest windows works with this game. The game needs a disc in the drive while you play and during installation you'll need to put in a key to activate the game, but there's no need to connect online and I had no issues installing this. I'll discuss the new features and any issues below:INTRO: After losing the intro with the Holiday expansion pack, this one brings it back and with some updated images too!...but be warned, if you install any expansion beyond this one - superstar/Makin' Magic, the intro disappears forever :(ANIMALS:The game adds pets to the base game of The Sims. And there's lots of pets to choose from: dogs, cats, birds, even a turtle and iguana! The dogs and cats are the biggest feature of the expansion and there's several different breeds to choose from (if you have Superstar expansion too you can get the pink poodle!). Because this is the first Sims game, dogs and cats have only one size and dogs especially don't look too much different even if you pick between the different breeds. But at the time this was released it was amazing to just have pets in the game! Both dogs and cats have similar needs to sims and it's important to take care of them, especially hunger. Luckily there's lots of items in this pack for dogs and cats, food bowls, chew toys, beds, etc. I love the new grooming station where you wash and then blow dry dogs! Cats add a new mice feature to the game. If you have flies in the house and also a cat the flies will become mice which can be hunted by cats.Along with cats and dogs you can get other animals as pets. All these other animals stay in the same spot in the house, parrots stay on their perch and are fun to interact with and there are caged animals like the turtle (which acts like the guinea pig you can get in the 'Livin' It Up' pack) and an iguana which is a weird but fun addition. I think you can also get budgies or love birds although I haven't bought any for ages for my sims. As well as pets though there are pests and mice can be a new pets in the house as well as rabbits in your garden. The rabbits are annoying and I've given up trying to grow carrots as the rabbits just always eat them and leave holes all over the place. The game also introduces the raccoon and a strange bear known as Claire who looks more human than bear! They randomly walk onto your lot usually when sims are asleep or away at work/school.NEW TOWN/HOUSES:The best new feature in this expansion has got to be the expanding of the base neighbourhood. Sim Lane is now a small part of a big town with lots more houses for new sims to move into, and some new sims in some of these houses. And you get Old Town, which is the shopping area of this new neighbourhood screen, it's got a very laid back feel to it, with a saxophone player, coffee counter and a few other things.VEGETABLES:You can grow vegetables at home which can then be stored in your own larder (like a fridge) and use instead of spending simoleons on food. There's no change to what meals look like but it's a fun new feature which I like.BUGS/PROBLEMS:-The expansion isn't without issues and while I didn't suffer any major bugs that I read others had at the time (this really was a buggy game at release) I do think some of the new animal and Old Town features aren't that great. Cats and dogs are a great addition but their not smart in the sims 1. They can often nearly die of hunger because they don't seek out food even when it's in a bowl. I've resorted to my sims always having treats in their inventory to increase pet hunger just in case.-Despite reading all the help in the strategy guide and elsewhere, parrots continue to die on me no matter what I do, which looks sad. The rabbits and strays that come to your lot can make your outdoor room score go to zero and even with a maid and gardener it can still be a big issue so your sims are never that happy going to work or school.-Old Town has major issues which mean you need to go into all the buildings in build mode and make sure there's two exists as that saxophone player will just stay playing his sax in a doorway for hours, no matter how many times he's told to move! The game's free will for sims also goes into overdrive while they are in Old Town with sims not taking any time to think between actions, meaning if you want to control a big family you might wantto turn off free will while in Old Town.OVERALL:Overall I'm still a fan of this game and would recommend it despite the flaws. It's got it's issues which make playing pets and going to Old Town much more difficult and complicated, but sometimes it's good to have the extra challenge and these issues don't always become problems, it depends. There's so many wonderful features though, pets having baby pets (you don't see kittens and puppies, just get new dogs and cats in your household), the pet show and so many things in Old Town plus the chance to build more of your own and add new sims, etc. It's still a brilliant expansion to the funniest Sims game out there. So if you can put up with some of the issues and can get this game to run on your PC then I'd definitely recommend this expansion, although make sure you install them in order if you have others that you also with to install.
