This game has so many qualities, it's hard to choose which to lead with. It's hilarious, smart, rewarding, glorious, challenging and fun. Here are my impressions from playing the game.As someone who does best in games where sharp reactions and fine motor skills give you the competitive advantage, I'm pretty unforgiving when it comes to games that involve puzzles.A solution that is too obscure or pedantic in its required execution, minor missteps that force a reset and repeat of what has already been done, cutscenes or transitional dialogue that can't be skipped, are all things that cause my interest to disappear faster than the butter I put into my hot morning tea. On the other hand, games that are too simple with linear progression provide little satisfaction and reason to return to after a break. So how did The Sexy Brutale measure up?All aspects of the games visual design are stunning. The rooms are beautifully crafted with clear attention to detail and distinct themes as you move through different parts of the mansion. When it comes to exploring room items and decorations, instead of the common option of an alternative (i.e. first person full screen) view, Cavalier opted for thoughtfully crafted text descriptions. These are used masterfully to not only enhance the scene setting and provide the necessary information, but to also deliver constant entertainment thanks to their witty construction. When it comes to solving the murders, although there is only one way to prevent them, there are multiple ways to discover the solution. I suspect the sensible, most efficient, and likely intended, way is to leverage your stealth skills and observe the characters from behind doors and inside cupboards whilst listening in to their conversations and self-talk. However, lacking the patience for such a considered approach, I tended to career around each area looking for pieces of the puzzle and trying to figure out how they all fitted together. The fact that I was still able to get to many of the solutions in this way is a testament to the game as a lesser one would force you into their desired pathway in order to succeed. Having taken this approach to solving most of the murders, I found I actually got to enjoy them all over again as I followed the characters on a subsequent play through and saw all the different ways you could have gotten to the prevention strategy. When it comes to the complexity of the puzzles, I found them superbly judged with the solutions coming to me at just the right time; before they got frustrating, but still hard enough to be rewarding once figured out. I cannot even fathom how Cavalier get the puzzles and all the pieces of such an intriguing overall narrative to fit together so well through compelling character interactions; each of who have their own distinct chapters and stories. With my slightly unstructured approach, play time was about 8 hours. That said, I still have two things that I have to collect to fully complete the game, and they keep me going back to test new theories on how to get them.In summary, this is a really great game. Even if you are not a puzzle game fan, do yourself a favour and grab a copy of this gem. In contrast to a triple A FPS game where the joy of turning on a guy is shortly followed by a swear worthy respawn as a grenade magnet, The Sexy Brutale will make you laugh with its wit, smile with its beauty and walk a little taller as your superior intelligence is proven with each new puzzle solved on your way to an inspired, and unexpected ending.

Sexy Brutale is a Puzzle game with time-loop mechanics. You are in a mansion where a masquerade party is happening. The several guests will be murdered at particular times in a different way. In each “day”, you are tasked to prevent one of the murders from happening. You will walk from room to room, looking for items to pick up or interact with. Sometimes you need to eavesdrop to hear key information e.g. to find out a person's plans, or to get a door code. This can be done by peeking through keyholes or hiding in a wardrobe. You aren't supposed to let the guests see you, but there's not much punishment for doing so; you are basically forced to leave the room before the guest will get back to their routine. You don't need to tediously peek through every door though; your mask glows as you approach a door to tell you not to proceed. At the end of each day, time will rewind to the beginning and you will lose standard items that you have picked up. Key items and knowledge are kept for the new timeline. The player will also be familiar with the mansion layout, where the murderer/victim will be at particular times, and will understand the events that play out until the victim is murdered at a particular time and location. Therefore, you should be more likely to achieve your objective in the next day. As you uncover rooms, they are added to your map, in addition to guest's locations at a given time. There's no penalty for not preventing that murder; time will always rewind. You don't have to wait for time to elapse either, there is an option to rewind early. When you prevent the murder, you will gain the person's masquerade mask which has magical properties. This then allows you to reach new areas of the mansion where the next victim will be. This means in a given chapter, you will mainly be visiting previously unexplored areas, although there is some crossover. In the new timeline, the previous solved murders still happen, and you even hear the sound effects of their murder e.g. gun shot, glass shattering etc. There are 52 playing cards hidden around the mansion, some of which you will come across naturally. Others you may have to backtrack with your new abilities to find. The gameplay is generally good, and the concept is brilliant. The final sections were a bit dull gameplay wise, but the story wrapped up nicely, with all the craziness of a time paradox you would expect.

I had seen reviews of this game and fell in love, found it at a great price and I cannot get enough of The Sexy Brutale!Yes, this isn't the longest game in the world but there is an alternate ending if you play through again and find everything! The graphics are reminiscent of something like The Wonderful 101 or Viewtiful joe, and the soundtrack is so addictive especially the main theme( you will be humming it to yourself!)Also this edition comes with the amazing soundtrack and a full colour manual which is nice to see these days! Many times you will be scratching your head at what you need to do to save these guests but when you figure it out, it is very rewarding.Get this thoughtful, sharp, sexy game! you will not regret it!

The style is different than a lot of recently released games, both artistically and mechanically which I'm greatly appreciative of (and shamefully one of my biggest gripes). Some puzzles, although cryptic are not difficult yet not too easy to figure out either. The music score is superb and the story is nicely thought out and transitions well. In a sense, it reminds me of Gregory Horror Show (2003) and I would say that other fans of that older game would most likely enjoy this, too.My only wish is that it was longer, however, if you're looking for something different, for something fun, humorous and mysterious, then The Sexy Brutale will surely provide you with several enchanting evenings.

Bought this game earlier this year and its the best game I've played in years. Amazing style and cleverly put together. Its got a great murder mystery feel to it and the way the music and sound effects build up to some key plot points is impressive. The music is awesome, very jazzy! Really unique and its fun for others to watch and help solve the puzzles too. Probably the best indie game you can get!

Really enjoyed this game. Completed in around 2 days with a demanding 8month old in the mix, but a great attention holder. Very pleased.
