If you've never played this game, but you are considering buying it due to the rave reviews published here, then I submit a word of caution. Don't get me wrong, it's a brilliant game, but it's far from everyone's 'cup of tea'.The Longest Journey has many good points, but it also has a few dozen bad ones. My largest gripe is the fact that - despite rumours to the contrary - the storyline isn't that good at all. After discovering the storyline about 1/4 the way through the game, I was vastly disappointed, as I had been told that the story was brilliant, even original. Not the case. The fantasy/sci-fi crossover has been done before, and the idea of a balance between the two worlds is an old one (see Flight of Dragons, for starters). Indeed, being a writer myself, I saw most of the plot 'twists' coming a mile off, and was left - by the end of the game - thinking I could have done a whole lot better. Another let down on the storyteller department was the dialogue. Although I'm willing to bet that it suffered somewhat somewhere in translation, it still does not excuse some of the lines of speech that at times are downright corny, predictable and long-winded (most of the game is taken up by dialogue, and while there is nothing wrong with this, the dialogue is at times pointless and repetitive).Story aside, TLJ has but a few inconsequential flaws. The animation is pretty bad, as are the blocky characters. I do not usually gripe about graphics, but in an adventure game, graphics keep the eye entertained in the middle of aforementioned lengthy dialogues (although I do have some great things to say about the graphics a little later). Another problem I had with the game was the often out-of-place course language. Sure, it's realistic, but the game itself isn't, so why stick a million f-words into a fantasy game that could otherwise be suitable for all ages? Seems a little ignorant to me.And now the good points.Firstly, let me start by saying that the voice acting is brilliant. When you consider some of the trashy lines they were given, the voice talent has done a remarkable job in fleshing out the characters with drama and subtlety alike, where required. It is in no small part to the acting, that the characters were given a life that is lasting and memorable. However, credit must be given to the writer for the creation of the main heroine, April Ryan, who is far from the a-typical girl. Some degree of thought has gone into the personality of April, and it shows, as you could quite easily imagine her as being a real person, with real likes, dislikes, fears and quirks. By the end of it, I found myself actually very fond of the little lady (and her sexy voice. (clears throat)).And then there is the art of the game. This is probably the strongest point of the whole 50+ hours, as the music and imagery alike both leave a lasting impression on the soul, which is something a video-game rarely does. The scenes are vast, beautiful, sprawling with wonderful graphics (a "stark" contrast to the blocky characters) and intricate detail, and the music is haunting at times, and subtly provoking at others.Like a film that - although fairly basic in plot - is an artistic experience that leaves a lasting impression, The Longest Journey will both frustrate and amaze you. However, if you have no interest in beautiful art, music, acting and characters, and dislike heavy dialogue, weak plots, and games which require you to think, I'd avoid this one if I were you. Fortunately, I'm not you, which is why I gave TLJ a 4 star rating.Overall, I'd say that it's an experience. I'll leave it at that.

I've very much enjoyed this quirky, intriguing game about a girl who discovers she has the ability to switch worlds. This is not an action game but more of an interactive novel with puzzles to keep you entertained along the way. It's plot driven and it is the story that compels you to play rather than manipulating your character through obstacles or fighting enemies. Although I enjoy RPGs, sometimes I want something that simply isn't so conflict oriented - this is the game for those times. The only drawback is that this older game doesn't render properly on modern wide format LCD screens. I can live with it because I'm a sucker for a good story even more than beautiful graphics.I'm sure the 2D graphics would have been lovely on an old standard cathode ray; however, it's a bit of a downer to install your new game and realise you're going to have to live with inferior images. Some video cards will allow you to adjust the pixel ratio display, mine won't and nor does the game.

This 2000 game doesn't run well on Windows 7. I had many multiple crashes with it - even after applying the latest official patch, and setting the game to run in XP mode with Administrator rights. The game is also meant to run in what today is a very small window (800 x 640 is my guess) without any anti-aliasing. A large screen will simply enlarge the small view-port, and so the game looks rather poor on a 22" or 24" screen. It's worth playing though - and I suggest that you run this as a game on an XP-based netbook (if you have a USB-based portable CD-drive to load it with) where the game should both run fairly well and display OK on the small screen. Alternatively you may have an old XP-based second PC in store, that you can haul out and run it on.

I say stick with it as some of the characters are a tad verbose, the priest's dialogue goes on for months!!,the story is very intriguing and April as the reluctant hero is fantastic, none of the puzzles are too obscure, save for the stones one,and overall it beats most other point and click hands down,I actually had to buy two copies as my first split in half!!,it's actually a fairly sizeable game too although there is a lot of going over old ground.

This is a classic adventure game. Classic in terms of the "old-school" interface and game mechanics. Some aspects may seem quite basic, and some of the interaction and dialogue excessively contrived.Main peeve is that a few of the puzzles are not well designed (illogicality or excessive obscurity). Thankfully there's not too much pixel hunting!Three stars given a bonus star due to current very low (bargain) price.

It was a great game to play; it had good characters and an interesting story. It had a lot of puzzles that were challenging but not impossible and you'd laugh at the end of the puzzle since it was so obvious but hard to spot initially. What appeals to me in this game is that the puzzles involves characters but doesn't have any boring conundrums like putting thing in an order or a sequence.Report by Elyse Davey:

I really enjoyed playing this. It was a good length and the puzzles were quite logical. The game kept crashing but once I downloaded the patch I did not have any further problems. The only negative is that the conversations would tend to go on a bit but if you have the subtitles on and are a quick reader you can skip through the conversations quite quickly by pressing escape.

For some reason this game never recieved the credit it deserved, well let me set you streight - This is one of the the best PC series available, its storyline is unbelieveabley good - stick with it, and this will be one of the best games you ever played. At any rate, for five quid, not owning this game is extremley stupid.

This game is one if the best I've ever played! The storyline is fantastic and easy to follow and it's quite a long game (not the type of game you can finish in a day!). I think the thing I love most about it is all of the locations! There is so much to explore! Great game, I highly recommend it!

if you are an adventure gamer, you have probably already plaid this game and know that its one of the best.but if you're not, i think you will still find it to be an amazing game.it's ridlles aren't hard, except from one or two,so don't worry.Anyway, great game

24.12.2010

One of the best point and click adventures games that is available. The puzzles are generally straightforward and solvable and there is a great storyline. The graphics do show their age a bit but it still looks quite nice.Great fun.

28.8.2010

Hardly cutting edge graphics or technology but this game is great if you've got a little time to spare to take in a story and work out some of the puzzles and tasks. Don't buy for gaming experience but instead for a challenge...

Hands down one of the greatest games ever made. When I was young I used to play this all the time, borrowing it for longer periods than was allowed from the local library. Good times. A game you won't want to miss out on :)

29.7.2013

If you like a mystery, with lots of twists and turns, then this is the game for you, I've played it three times now, and still find the plot's with quirky characters, and alien worlds, enthralling.

22.12.2013

This was just what I was looking for. No graphic violence and it's not straightforward you have to think about your moves.
