The Club: either you get it or you don't. The Club is all about speed and accuracy, rhythm and repetition. There's no story. There's no cutscenes. The game is about a corrupt organization of rich men who organize an underground competition to see how long you can survive. You learn this in the tutorial and a 2 minutes intro video for all the characters at the start of the game. You have eight contestants to play as. Their differences are basically down to speed and damage. While some of them are faster but take lots of damage, the others are stronger but slower. All the characters are stylish if a bit cliché. There's the strong Siberian dude, the tough cop trying to take down The Club, the agile Japanese, the African guy with tribe markings on his face or the radical sports freak. There's not much difference playing as one or the other, it's pretty much about your favourite character and if you want speed or stamina. They're all charismatic and cool. The whole objective of the game is to rack up as much deaths as possible. If you spend too much time without killing someone, your combo lowers. Anytime you kill someone the score is multiplied by whatever your combo is at the time, so you need to kill as fast as you can. You have to know the levels and where the bad guys appear. They're always at the same places so you can memorize the pattern and choose the order of killing for getting the biggest combo you can. There are 8 locations where you play tournaments. Venice, a steel mill, a mansion and even the middle of a war. The graphics are average but there's a good level of detail in the levels. The music is perfect for the fast paced action. There's never a dull moment in The Club. There's no cover system because that would go against the objective of the game. You're always running, trying to keep your combo from going down, looking for a guy to kill. The game is not difficult but can be challenging. The AI is nothing extraordinary but there are a lot of enemies and things get very intense. There are various game modes. In Survivor you have to survive a set amount of time in a closed location, being attacked from all sides. In Run The Gauntlet you have to reach the end of the level before time runs out and in Time Trial you gain time as you kill enemies to do a number of laps around the level. If time runs out, you die. In Siege, you're in a confined area, shooting from long range at the enemies. The online multiplayer also has a good amount of modes but all people play is kill match or team kill match. These are the usual modes everyone knows from every multiplayer game. In The Club you start with a weapon which is usually bad and have to find a more powerful weapon in the level. What happens is that the players that know the maps better always get the better weapons and dominate play which can sometimes be very frustrating. Still, it can be fun.The Club is an old school game. There's no story progression, no plot, its just shooting. If that's your style, you will love it. If you're looking for CoD4 or Halo, look elsewhere. This is a simple, addictive game. You have numerous leaderboards and you'll soon be playing the level just one more time to climb a few more spots, beat your record, get that perfect combo. In terms of longevity, it never ends. It's not an innovating game. Its gameplay is repetitive and over time can become tedious but it's also a lot of fun.I'm happy to be a member of The Club.

Well others have outlined the gameplay elements so I won't repeat that. What you have to realise when buying this game is that you are not paying for a 10-12 hour campaign. You are paying for a game that can be played through on easy level in a couple of hours. However, step the difficulty level up and the challenge begins to try and perfect your runs, timing your shots well so you keep your combo going to rack up high scores.A previous reviewer said there are no tactics but I disagree, the choice between spraying your enemies with machine gun fire just to keep your combo going, or risking going more precise for a much more score worthy single headshot, at the risk of losing your combo is a constant one.Similarly, weapon choice is a constant decision. The fact that there is no story as such and this is primarily a trip back to the good old days of gaming where the sole purpose was to beat your high score will grate some people. I find it a hugely refreshing change.Multiplayer is good fun and lag free (though last night there were only 12 people in the world playing The Club online)My only gripes are that the difficulty curve is quite steep. you will blast through every level on casual mode, yet put it up one level to reckless and it gets pretty tough, pretty quickly. Either Casual is slightly too easy, or reckless is slightly too hard. There are 2 further levels which seem nigh on impossible to me so why reckless has to be as difficult as it is I'm not sure. On the flipside, when you nail it and completely blow your previous high score away, it is a very, very satisfying feeling. Also I would have liked to have seen a bit more in the way of unlockable, but that's pretty minor really.EDIT : Now I've been playing this for a week, I'm starting to really learn some of the levels and although I still havent won a tournamant on Reckless, I'm consistantly getting 2nd place over the 6 events, so it does get possible to take on the higher skill levels, (managed 4th in an Insane tounament too!) even for a shooter neanderthal like me.PGR4 + Tony Hawks + Tekken + guns = The ClubThe most enjoyable shooter for a long time.

The impression that I got of this before I bought it was that it seemed to be like some kind of Unreal Tournament, but it's quite different from that. It's actually a rather inventive Arcade shooter, it has to be said it is very similar to a training mission level that you get at the beginning of various shooter games where you run a course and shoot what pops out in front of you, think the training level at the start of Call of Duty 4, but the thing is, this is just so much fun!The game has 8 running and gunning environments such as Prison Cells, (as featured in the demo), Ocean Liner, Steel Mills, Venice, Warehouse, Manor House, Bunker, and Warzone maps, and in each of these are 6 various game modes such as Sprint,Time Attack, Run the Gauntlet, Survivor, and Siege. You choose one of of the aggressive looking characters and then run through the map shooting up multiplyers, hitting special skull plates if you should see any, all this adds up your score, the aim of the game is just to get the highest score you can and get to the end.The game is fairly original, addictive, and good as one of those games you just want a quick blast from if you haven't got much time to spend playing a game, the graphics are very good, some might think it won't warrant full price, but I can tell you, although you will unlock all the championships and maps on easy level in just a few hours, to then master a tournament on harder levels takes a lot more time, and the game actually has just as much; if not more gameplay time in it than the average action shooter. Also a little tip, go to youtube and watch some of the guys videos there, the very best players are racking up unbelievable scores of about 8 million, just watching how they played levels I was able to go back and double my scores straight away on the maps I was playing.

I think this game gets a bit of a bum rap. When I tried the demo I had mixed feelings. However, I decided to rescue a copy from the bottom of a bargain bin and I am glad I did.The game is a 3rd person turkey shoot, or convict shoot as the case may be. You run around levels taking down fellow convicts that are trying to kill you. Simple stuff yet enjoyable. The game has eight levels all bar the first you have to unlock. The settings are quite entertaining, a ship wreck, mansion, nuclear bunkers etc. Graphics are excellent and the settings do add to the experience. You have choice of a few characters with others unlockable. It is important to pick a character that suits your style i.e. fast, strong, good aim etc. Each setting has about 6 or 7 levels and these consist of different styles of play such as finding the exit, timed circuits and a siege where you hold out against waves of convicts. You can pick up weapons and ammo along the way and shoot signs for time extentions. Chaining kills boosts your score.I found the game entertaining, fast paced and exciting to play. In the end I thoroughly enjoyed it. Auto saving at the end of each level also helps. However, whilst the game does have replay value it is short. You can complete this in a days play if you had the time. The levels themselves are very short and can only take a few minutes to work through.Multiplayer is a clone of the main game except with human opponents. Nothing special but it is fun in a full house.Overall, I would suggest giving this a try if you like FPS games as it is an interesting take on the genre.

After I had read some very mixed reviews on this game I was not sure whether or not to buy it. Please don't make the same mistake. After I eventually decided to buy it I never looked back. It is a very unique game and one which requires a great understanding of the way in which sega works. They are very unpredictable and come up with the most bizarre ideas... and this one worked brilliantly. If you have playstation network then you will probably find it hard to pull yourself away from the addictive online multiplayer version of the game, where you can challenge up to 7 other players from around the world. Even if you do not have network play it is still very addictive, with many modes of multiplayer games. However, this game is a bit like marmite... you either love it or you hate it. But what I am saying is, don't disregard it until you have played it yourself. It is a great deal of fun and has an interesting structure to it. Staying objective here however, I would like to point out the downside of this game. It does get a bit repetetive when playing single player mode, as you basically replay the levels over and over again. Do not let this put you off of a wonderful game though.I hope this review helped those of you who have a bad taste in your mouth about this game. Thank you for taking the time to read it.

Having played the demo for a while and was quite taken with it, I finally decided to buy the game. I was put off a bit by the mixed reviews that this game had. I even considerd the PC version, but after hearing about the NIGHTMARE problems people are having with crashing DRM and Limited installs etc... !!, I decided to get the 360 version. normally Im quite selective when I buy a game, unless its got like 5 stars I wont touch it, but I was wrong about the club. The game is a real blast !!, The sound effects and music are brilliant, Ive been playing the club for a while now, its a little hard at first trying to keep up with the massive scores you have to get to stay up in the rankings in tournement mode, this game needs alot of practice, but its somthing you have to work up to. all in all... I think its a really decent game, ive had lots of fun playing it and continue to do so..........Mike UK

I've played this a lot and some of the reviews just don't match up to the game. And I think that's down to the expectations.Imagine reviewing Mario Kart and saying it doesn't have the depth, number of cars, physics etc of Gran Turismo. No it doesn't, but hat's not a bad thing. No, it isn't a game of huge depth, character and strategy. But I don't think it was meant to be. It's meant to be something different to the games already delivering that, and fair play for that too.The Club is a great blast of a game. Fun. Run and shoot people. It's a brilliant challenge and a great lauch, and well worth a go.

i have to say i liked this game even though single player was pretty short lived, and though there is a multiplayer hardly anybody online plays it even though its fairly good fun to play. There are tournaments and single player events with online leaderboards these are the main part of the game, which would have beed vastly improved if they have had included an option to watch the top player replays.Presentation is good and the gameplay original it could be a classic, but just lacks something especially in the online department.Five out of five for an original well put together unpretentous shooter.

14.1.2009

I am not good at shooters. I am not good at remembering lots of buttons. Fortunately, "the club" does not require either of these attributes in order to provide masses of fun. This is a 3rd person arcade shooter even your granny would get a kick out of and being a Sega title you know the gameplay will be second to none. I even played it online and discovered I am not the worst player out there! This is not a shooting game for purists - stick with Call of Duty 4 and upwards if you are. If you want fast paced arcade game thrills with only yourself to beat then the fun is endless.

Firstly, don't listen to everyone who gave this a poor review, they all base it on the demo of 'the club', since then there have been significant improvements.Although this game might not have the best plot the actual gameplay, graphics and good fun makes up 4 that. The single mode is good due to the score system meaning, lots of re-playability. Then online is even better comparing scores and the usual matches.I'm not comparing this game to COD4 or any other normal FPS in fact, this game finally adds some fun back into gaming.

Even though I havnt played it so I cannot give it a star rating, I'll give it a 5 just for the way it looks. It's for my brother-in-law for christmas and he's really into cod & medal of honour. So I hope I have chose a good right on the lines. Thank you, it took a little time in coming but when I messaged the seller he was very prompt on telling me that it's coming as he's dispached it and it came the following day. So it took a good couple of weeks but it was worth it. Thank you!!

What a bold game. It's quite unlike any other shooter and given the score based nature of the game I can see why some people reference Project Gotham Racing. It's not Call of Duty 4, but very few games are. The Club is a totally unique experience - massive replayability due to the scoring mechanic and brilliant multiplayer. A true test of skill so I can see why some folks won't get it but I did and I love it.

9.2.2008

I can totally see that this game may not be everyone's cup of tea, but if they idea of competing in online leaderboards, or trying to beat to beat your friends best scores, then this game is definitely for you. It's incredibly addictive, and it's been years since I had that feeling on being 'in the zone'- superb. Also, the 4 player split screen multiplayer is awesome for post-pub fun with your mates.

29.2.2008

I was reluctant to play this game at first as I had read the other reviews about how bad it was and that its boring, but after playing the demo I got a pleasant surprise at how refreshing the gameplay was and how it had its own gameplay style. It uses a points based system which I thought was intuitive and enjoyed playing it and so it is not as terrible as people make it out to be.
