this is a departure for Nintendo as the theme of the game, albeit with cartoonish retro graphics is quite dark. The story goes that after being told by a voice (god ?) that little issac was evil his mother wanted to kill him so he hid and found a trapdoor to an underground labyrinth of rooms. The levels which get harder and more numerous culminate in issac having to kill his mother from inside, so yeah quite dark and as a theme ,the reason for the 16 certification. The game plays like a dark version of the old legend of zelda boss dungeons but without the puzzles. There are a couple of hidden rooms that can be accessed by bombing wall or using one of the hundreds of strange pick ups but primarilyyou are killing things (remember smash tv anyone).Control wise it is very basic one stick/d pad to move and the other stick/d pad to fire your weapon, unfortunately this makes diagonal shooting impossible and as a lot of the little baddies seem to hide or move in these areas you do have to put yourself in harms way to get to them. The dungeons go from four or five rooms to maybe ten or more with initially three or four levels to the end, but increasing after beating the game.A big thing has been made that the game is randomly generated each times with random enemies and collectables, which is partly true and after hundreds of "runs" i can say that the small selection of room designs does get a bit samey but the items and enemies do change, but only from a small selection that can increase after multiple plays.Completing various conditions will unlock different items to collect in the dungeons and different weaker or stronger characters to attempt the game with. There are also challenge modes with a set objective to complete or a certain character and item set to play with. This all sounds quite fun and interesting and as a quick blast ( you can complete a run in less than an hour if you try everything) The Binding of Issac does have a few problems that are annoying and disappointing. The games randomly generated items are one issue.Unless you memorise the hundreds of pills, items, power ups, power downs then you can find your powerful character reduced to an unplayable mess in seconds, losing any advantage you have worked for.Secondly, depending on what enemy set is loaded you can literally die in seconds. The random nature of the game mechanics make some run wildly unbalanced with you being massively underpowered or overpowered which can be frustrating. In fact beating the game does not require lots of skill, it is more a case of the luck of the draw.I have lost count of the number of times a long 30 minute run has been ruined by having a dungeon generated with treasure chests and locked doors but zero keys anywhere.Or other runs where I had collected room clearing weapons only to lose it all with a random pick up that gave me uncontrollable floating shots (or issacs tears as they are called) and the loss of most of my hearts (energy).hearts can be added to or converted into temporary hearts in the god/devil rooms or in the shops where collectable coins can be spent to "aid "your quest. The final issue is the cost of the game. The price from the seller is better than most but the game is half the cost on pc or steam, yeah its only download but nintendo could have sold this a lot cheaper.Product wise the game is equally playable on big screen or handheld mode as the graphics aren't taxing on the system and are crisp and clear. The sound is nothing special, with growls and gurgles and explosions the order of the day.The music is quite atmospheric but after hearing it for the hundredth time it does get a bit boring as there are only a few tunes. The game is good for a break between longer more involved games but does show its weaknesses and limitations on extended play sessions. There are codes to input if you die with a particularly good set of pick ups and on inputting the codes the items are available to pick up or buy somewhere randomly generated in the dungeon, which is helpful if you can get them before getting killed by a particularly high level boss.As the room layout(not the design) is random they won't be in the same place which depending on your opinion can be a good or bad thing. To succeed in the game you really must try every pick up and power up and character so you can learn what works and what doesn't for your own play style. This does involve frustrating grinding looking for that one item.Trouble is nine times out or ten no matter how good you are because of the unbalanced game mechanics you can't beat the games this genius by the developer or laziness, possibly both.Turning an old pc indy game into a cartridge release with all the updates seems a good idea but the mechanics make me wish for something a bit more polished and up to date.In Issacs case sprites not spawning under your character and losing you health or picks ups being impossible to collect because of obstacles or no keys should have been programmed in to the cartridge release to make it a bit more polished....like the retro feel but gameplay is a bit clumsy at times.so to close a good game for short term play, could be cheaper, frustrating at times, unbalaced, unfair but for some reason does have that one more go feel to it.

I love this game!If you've come this far you probably already know The Binding of Isaac Afterbirth is procedurally generated rougelike rpg shooter. The game boasts excellent enemy variety, multiple bosses and you never really know which one's you're going to face keeping it fresh. Difficulty feels right, as while tough, it rarely feels like it's unfair, which is a risk the way the levels are generated. There are hundreds of power ups and pick ups and a major trick is working out what they all do.This is currently my most played Switch game for good reason.I also think the game suits the system well as the control sticks feel right to use, and in portable mode the display is excellent.Docked it doesn't look too much better, but this game isn't about the graphics. It's also teh perfect game to just pick up and do a run when you have time, suiting the portable switch! The Switch version artwork is excellent and it comes with a NES style instruction manual. All little touches but add to the experience massively!

A different type of a video game. In all my years of console gaming, I have never played one like this. The Binding of Isaac is a somewhat, top-down shooter (or for those that know, also called as "Rogue") which you move around with the d-pad/analogue stick and to shoot up/down/left/right you also need to precisely press each button or else you'll end up shooting the wrong direction. This is something that I'm still getting used to since it doesn't feel too natural for me.TBoI's story basically revolves around defeating the enemies of his mother, brothers and sisters so it's nothing really too deep. Beat the big bad boss, essentially. But aside that, the most interesting thing about this release is the cover and its content. The European version features stickers and a manual just like the American version and the reversible cover tells a story. Funny thing happened, when I opened my copy the insides were on the wrong side so I had to carefully readjust the cover.

Really nice package, seems that real deal with portable and console editions in one with nice manual and stickers.Well it pretty much is. If this game is your bag (and that a big if) this is a great edition. The presentation and look of the game is spot on. Playing with joycon can be alittle imprecise but a pro controller can sort that. Only real negative I can bring up is that certain items grouping up can bring about slowdown. It's never choppy, the game just slows which actually can lead to an advantage but it does break the smooth gameplay. It has happened in the later stages of 2 runs in about 40 hours of gameplay (roughly 35 runs).Doesn't take away form the fact I love this game though.Truely a game I can play over and over and over and over. A great release as my vita/PS4 purchase has now become in compatible as vita is still stuck on rebirth. Read full review...

It's a 2D top down, pixelated little gem of a game that, with all the randomness of every single run, will have you playing for literally hours upon hours for all the achievements which, I'm glad to say, are old fashioned achievements that all unlock things for you to enjoy in the game, from new enemies and new levels, bosses and items, trinkets and collectables, it's an amazing game. One of the best indie games of the last decade, one of the best Switch games to always have handy when you're bored on a train, as runs take between 15-35 minutes, depending on what items you find/skill level you have. If you only afford one game for your Switch, buy this one and try and finish it 1000% (that's right,it goes all the way up to threee zeroes!) before you move onto something else. It's hard work but so, so rewarding!

It's a shame people will instantly dislike a game because of its indie status as it has more depth than many AAA games on the market.Every time you play you'll find something new and with both DLC packs already on Switch you'll find even more.I already had this on PS4 but bought again for Switch as it's the perfect game to play on the go with each successful run lasting about 20-30 minutes. It also saves your position automatically for when you want to go back, so you won't be starting your run all over again when you turn it off.At £30 you really can't go wrong here.

This game is different every single time, it’s addictive and aggravating and amazing. The re-play value is always worth the price compared to other games that you play until you complete it and then never play it again. Art style is like super meat boy (think it’s the same creator). You can transform your character when you pick up certain items for example, become guppy who can fly and has an almost infinite amount of flies to help you fight off enemies. I just love this game

I love this game on pc, and switch is the perfect console for a port. This game is brutally hard, and weird as hell. DO NOT BUY THIS FOR YOUR KIDS WITHOUT FIRST CHECKING IT OUT FOR YOURSELF. The themes of the game are very, very dark but it is exactly what I expected in compared with the pc version, right down to the in-depth mode displaying your current character stats (which was unexpected)

I've been addicted to this game for years now, so why did I buy it on a different platform and have to unlock everything so over again?! Silly me!It's an amazing game. Random seeded dungeon type of game... Think Satanic Zelda. It's also HILARIOUS. The pick ups make me laugh every time.As for me, Pisces - tears up!I love this game. It is difficult though, but for me that only adds to it.

5.7.2018

Really great game that you will get hours and hours of enjoyment out of however the price is a little high seeing as the game has been out for awhile on other platforms. This being said I think the game is still worth it and great to play on the go and runs amazingly on the switch.

Awesome game ! Hours and hours of entertainment. Difficult trophies, plenty of replay value and at a great price for hard copy. I already own the digital because it was free on psn+ in 2014 but I had to get the psychical copy as it has all dlc I want to support the team behind it.

Now the fifth time I have bought Isaac in one shape or another and love the extra content. Quite alot of money for a game which costs a fraction of this on the PC but still fun and a total time sinc. One to go back to over and over again through the years.

TBoI is just amazing and addictive! The Switch is made for game like this to be played on the go. If you haven't played it just get it for your Switch, it's a must have! If you don't know the genre, I warn you though, it's not a casual game!

18.9.2017

Great physical copy of a worryingly addictive game! First played this on Vita and this version is even better with loads more content. A future classic and this physical edition is the one to have in any serious collection!

13.1.2018

Amazing game, not for kids though, if you like dark humour this is for you, multiplayer with multiple controllers or just a single joy-con each, never been so happy saying "yay I have cancer and a dead cat"
