Yes, this is "just Tetris" - if I had a penny every time I heard someone come to this conclusion, I'd be a very rich man indeed.In terms of mechanics, this isn't much different than Tetris Ultimate - banked pieces, a preview of which piece is coming next, T-spins, combos, infinite spin, everything is just as you know it. The only addition gameplay-wise is the Zone meter, which builds up as you complete lines until you can activate it, freezing time as you complete line after line, cleared lines moving to the bottom of the screen instead of disappearing so you can achieve a Tetris, Octoris, Dodecatris, Decahexatris or the fabled Perfectris by clearing the entire board in one go.It's a fantastic little feature, and though one my start by using it as a panic button that allows them to get out of a sticky situation, the better you get at the game, the more you'll find yourself using it to boost your score by a few thousand.I'll be honest, the difference in gameplay wasn't the reason I bought this game (pre-ordered on Playstation Store - I just feel the need to tell people just how good this game is) - it's the complete immersion you feel.If you haven't seen the reveal trailer, I suggest you do so now (it's on YouTube, I'll wait). If you've played Tetris, you'll know that the more you play and deeper you get into the game, the deeper you fall into a feeling of zen, and this is the feeling that the game capitalises on.The beautiful visuals in the background (and occasional foreground) act as a musical visualiser, pulsing to the beat of the music, particle effects trickling down the screen as you complete each line, an interaction happening every time you achieve a Tetris - be it a whale calling as it rolls across the screen, or flames bursting from your peripheral vision.Each move you make in each stage has its own sound, moving left or right, rotating clockwise or anti-clockwise, soft drop or hard drop, and as the stage evolves while you play, these sound effects merge with the music to create a completely unique soundtrack to your gameplay.At the end of the day, Tetris Effect starts to feel like a rhythm game, and the VR drives that point home. Just as Thumper's VR mode only changes perspective, so does Tetris Effect. VR implementation isn't like Tetsuya Mizaguchi's previous PSVR game, Rez Infinite, where VR can be used as an alternate form of gameplay. Instead, the VR is used for complete immersion - the backgrounds now surround you, completely drawing you into the hypnotic state. In addition, PSVR has extremely low latency, so the game just feels... better in VR.There are two main gameplay modes - Journey and Effect. The former is your standard campaign as you play through 27 different stages, each of them unique, each of them differing in pace, tension and ultimately difficulty. Levels don't just get faster as you play, depending on the stage you may find a moment of respite in the middle before launching into speed level 15. As you play through this "story" mode, you may find that the game makes you feel slightly emotional - it's truly strange how one can turn Tetris into an emotional journey but Resonair found a way, and the final stage and credits is incredibly powerful, despite featuring nothing but blocks and particle effects.On the other hand, Effect mode is a lot more objective oriented. Game types are split into four different genres - Classic, Adventurous, Focus and Relax, with a total of 15 objectives ranging from your standard Marathon (complete 150 lines, with the speed increasing every 10 lines) to Countdown (complete lines around a single column that an I-piece will drop into after a certain number of pieces). Not only this, but every weekend there is a "Weekend Ritual" in which all players online collaborate to achieve a score - if successful, a limited avatar will be rewarded to all who participated.All in all, this is an incredible game, with a number of different gameplay modes that will allow you to keep you playing for ages, and an atmosphere that will make you want to keep playing for ages.

It’s Tetris but with an audio/visual presentation unlike any of the previous games. If you’ve played Rez or Child of Eden then you might know what to expect. The visuals are breathtaking with lots of flowing particle effects forming all kinds of shapes, sprawling vistas, and a whole host of other Imaginative backgrounds while the foreground and tetrominoes are suitably styled to match. The music responds to what’s happening on screen along with the tetrominoes’ movement and drop sound effects contributing to the music perfectly.The audio and visual sensations along with the addictive gameplay make it really easy to slip into a focused trance while you clear lines. With VR,I honestly believe this is one of the best sitting VR experiences out there!It’s not just about the experience though as there is a myriad of gameplay modes and challenges to work through to keep the addictive gameplay going.I have to dock it a point though as there is no multiplayer. Ive enjoyed previous Tetris games with friends and it’s a little disappointing that Tetris Effect doesn’t feature this.Still, it’s a fantastic game nonetheless that’ll leave you seeing tetrominoes when you shut your eyes and with at least one of the songs stuck in your head!

After being a die-hard tetris player since I was nine (1989, Nintendo gameboy) I can safely say I have played nearly all versions of tetris on consoles and arcade cabinets and love them all for their unique features or modes but not since classic nes tetris have I ever been so excited and played a single version so much. Firstly you have to experience this in vr, any other way just doesn't do it justice, don't get me wrong in 4K it is beautifully stunning but vr just takes it to a completely new level...I've gotten some stick from my friends in the classic nes community but once they have played this they soon changed their opinion...Gameplay wise, well its tetris,you just clear lines but the music and visuals heightens the experience and delivers gameplay that's unparalleled...Rather then me waffling on just buy it and experience it, you won't be disappointed!...

The game may be 'just Tetris' but it is very beautiful to listen to and look at - as you move through each level the tempo and visuals become increasingly complex (incorporating your button presses into the beat).Each level is also visually very different in style so it has been, so far, impossible to get bored of them.I am, it turns out, though, just as rubbish at Tetris as I always was and have not advanced far into the game's 'Journey' mode, but the alternative 'Effects' (hence the name), allows for alternative methods of play.This game also supports PSVR (which we don't have), and I can only imagine how amazing that must look.

Absolutely mind blowing version of Tetris by the creator of Lumines & Rez , i didnt think any developer would have anywhere to go with Tetris these days such is the amount of different clones out there , how wrong i was , this is without doubt the very best version i've ever played , the trippy visuals , the beautiful music , all go together seamlessly , i'm on the last level of Journey mode in normal difficulty now & its extremely difficult as pieces just fall down like stones & you have virtualy no time to react , but i'll keep playing as its so amazingly addictive , 10/10 & one of 2018's best games , a masterpiece ❤❤

Yeah so I just sepent roughly an hour and a half playing this game and I forgot the rest of the planet. Please be careful playing this it is extremely addictive and so enjoyable that you will forget yourself and get absolutely lost in this world. The soundtrack and sound effects - the VISUALS that you get while playing this simple game are mind blowing.If you have a VR set GET this game. Dont even think about it just put it in that basket and hit proceed. Mind Blown.

Now i must say i was on the fence for this ggame due to it being this price and also singleplayer only, but am i so very glad i made a purchase of Tetris Effect.Such a Beautiful and smooth experience whilst playing this game from booting up game to first Tetriminos its by far my favourite version of one of my alltime fav games. Absolutely Hypnotic and Wonderous Experience every time i play!

Love this game! Even though I’m playing it on a standard ps4, and not in VR, I was blown away by the graphics, the music and how much content there was. There is a mode for everyone, from novices to masters. There is even a campaign mode with 2000 levels (not exaggerating). I’ve played different varieties of Tetris games on different consoles, and this one by far is my favourite!

Finally a disc version of Tetris Effect is now available, and Amazon UK have it at a reasonable price. This is the definite version of Tetris and is definitely worth getting over the digital version (you can play this on any machine without having to faff around with logging in and downloading for a start). Fully recommended.

Tetris Effect is so fun, great game, the music and colors are so beautiful and vibrant and the game is addictive. I can play for hours and hours!!! its challenging and so much fun. The best PS4 game I have ever played. I played this more than anyother game.

The first game I thought Ooh nice but as time went I was going Ooh wow nice wow ooh nice wow.Great immersion and great game play.Ok its just Tetris but obviously in vr form but come on, everybody loves Tetris and this is it in its next form.

A real breath of fresh air from open world games and online shooting. An amazing pure puzzle game with an incredible ever changing graphic styles. Challenging and moving at the same time

Very trippy looking game. I don't have a vr headset but I do feel this is best experienced with a vr headset. But it's a great Tetris game without any micro transactions.

A full sensory experience. Everything from the music to the visuals to the gameplay is just perfect. I can see myself playing it for hundreds of hours.
