I owned the last-but-one version for a few years, the 272en, and that was a great lens. I was tempted by the next one, the F004, but dithered and the F017 was launched, which is the one I am reviewing. I can only really compare it to the 272en for you, if that helps. I was getting noticeable chromatic abberation and though centre sharpness was great, the edges never quite kept up with that. There was no image stabilisation. It was also very light plastic, had a tricky manual to auto focus mechanism which often put you out of focus again when you used it, and the lens was not internally focussing, which meant that at full 1:1 ratio, the lens was a good 100mm longer than when set to infinity. The new lens has dealt with it all.Edge to Edge sharpness is great, It really is. Avoid going past F:16 or you'll risk diffraction, the same with all lenses. If you are struggling with depth of field at close macro, then learn how to focus stack, it is not a hard thing to do and works well, even in photoshop. (there are other special focus stacking software packages which are rated highly).Contrast is very good, much better than the 272en in less than perfect lighting. The lens is internally focussing so does not change length as you close focus - a problem with the 272en if you were on a tripod as the front of the lens encroaches on the subject.Other benefits are a much much stronger (and heavier) body, and improved dust and moisture seals on the camera mount AND around the focus ring and switches, and front element. This lens has upgraded the F004 by these moisture seals, and also adding a better image stabilisation VC system, and very very quick autofocus (in fair to good light).Overall, a worthy upgrade if you have the en272, a possible if you have the F004 (if you use it outdoors often, in not too good weather) and the quality of the lens, and the images produced are superb. Not sure buying the Nikkor own brand (or Canon etc) is a wise move for the money. That said, the Tamron F017 is absolutely not an inexpensive lens. You really should be using one a fair bit, to justify adding it to your kit. It could be worth getting to exhaust your interest in macro, and then sell it on - cheaper than renting one for a few months or a year or so.I did shoot at middle to infinity and the results were great. I am not a portrait shooter so I can't confirm the ability of the lens in that respect, but other reviewers have declared it superb so be guided by those.I include a sample shot taken of a small printed circuit board. The area shown is at 1:1 and in real life is just 36mm wide x 24mm high. I have had to degrade it to 72 dpi because the original was too large for eBay to handle so bear this in mind when viewing.Hope this helps, and if you buy one, hope you love yours too!Read full review...
