Absorbing, Fun and Easy to learn.Unboxing- The first thing you will notice is a sturdy box holding a well made board game. Everything has a good feel to it and my only gripes are the miniatures are all a rather bland grey. I understand many people like to pain the miniatures (and I have began the process myself) but they could have at least made evil characters red, good blue or something similar? When you play with 4 or more players there tends to be moments of wondering who is who (as some of the figurines are very similar) The dice are orange and blend in perfectly with the entire centre of the board (the Plains of Fire are also the same colour)its a small fix buying some different dice as we did but still an annoyance.Gameplay- Very easy turn-based movement designed to make your character strong enough to make a run for whatever your winning criteria might be? Be warned everything is more of a gamble than an actual role-playing dungeon game? Your character interacts with each square they land on which usually means drawing an "adventure card" which can result in anything from objects that make you stronger, followers who also aid you, gold to purchase items, events that affect the whole board/ other players or an enemy to fight? With the extra expansions you usually get more adventure cards that make the game more interesting and diverse each time you play.Player Vs Player combat can be fun especially if another player is holding something you really want for yourself! Towards the end of the game you might find it gets quite ruthless very quickly. We actually have a house rule to draw the game out even longer (i.e. The Portal of Power does not open until 1 x character has x 15 craft or strength then its open for all)Literally anyone can learn this game within several minutes and for the more advanced gamer there is possibility to draw up as many house rules as you like? When we play a full game of Talisman we use many of the expansions AND add a "Heroquest" board onto the edge creating and entire new dungeon level! We also augment the inner region with monster/wizard figurines who have their own outcomes when you engage with them. In fact in several weeks our group will be embarking on a 6 hour+ quest to slay a Dragon with Strength 33 & Craft 33! (Please feel free to look over our game on the Milton Keynes Board Game Club on Facebook) Anyway... You get my point. This base game is fun on its own, but it also very good to adapt for experienced Talismaniacs.Expansions- If you are going to get any expansions then you might best dip a toe with any of the "small box" expansions. The best one in my opinion is the Reaper. You have a non-playable "Grim Reaper" that you can add to your game who can be moved by any player who rolls a 1. It adds a great dynamic and like all expansions you also get extra characters (with the miniature and card of course) plus spells, adventure cards and a few other bits. For the "big box" expansions each one has a great and different dynamic. Highlands is probably the easiest and least complicated. City is interesting to a point but only good if used with others. Woodland is more combative and interesting and Dungeon is quite a test! The beauty is that each one gives a different dynamic and really adds depth into your game. (See- Image I found for how big your game can get with 4 x big box expansions)Summary- Enjoy!

The board game "Talisman" has a well-deserved reputation as one of the best fantasy board games ever made. I have been a die hard fan ever since picking up the Second Edition boxset back in the late 1980s, and I couldn't even imagine how many hours I have spent vying for the Crown of Command. I still have all of the Second Edition expansions, from the Dungeon and City up to the Timescape and Dragons, including the cut-out special characters from Games Workshop's "White Dwarf" magazine.Because I love the original so much, (I ignored the Third Edition, which tried to updated things to make the game more in-line with RPGs including things like "Experience Points" and connecting Talisman even further to the Games Workshop "Warhammer Universe.")it took me awhile to give this Fourth Edition of "Talisman" a try. I finally gave it a chance at a local gaming convention and was hooked again. This Fourth Edition takes a basic "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach to this classic boardgame, keeping the Second Edition essentially intact but introducing some of the better fixes from the Third Edition. The board itself is identical, although enlarged and with updated artwork. The card text is almost unchanged (including characters who "plod off to the discard pile") although none of the original art was retained.Probably the most notable change was making "Life" a variable starting number, just like Strength and Craft. Some of the characters start with five (Warrior) or even six (Troll) life instead of the standard four. The Prophetess, one of the most powerful characters in the Second Edition, has been de-powered a bit. She can now draw one card, and then chose to either keep that card or discard it and draw another, which she must encounter. That was a nice edition as in the old version The Prophetess was so powerful she was boring to play. An additional element called "fate counters" has been added which allow for the re-rolling of a single die if you pay a counter. Craft-defeated monsters can also be cashed-in now in the same way as Strength-defeated monsters.Fantasy Flight games has done a tremendous job with the production values of this version of "Talisman." Aside from the updated artwork, the counters are all hard-plastic with the Strength, Craft and Life counters being colored cones that come in 1-count and 5-count versions. The cards are on laminated cardstock which will last through repeated shuffling and drink-spilling. Really, everything has gone through a major upgrade. If I had any disappointments with this Fourth Edition they are minor. The game board itself is too huge, taking up my entire kitchen table, which means that when I pick up any future expansions (of which I hope there will be many after

We bought this game as a birthday present for our son who just turned 11. He really enjoyed playing the game. This game says it's for ages 9 and above but I really don't think he would've had the patience for this game before now (because of all the details). And this is NOT a 90 minute game. This is a multi-hour game. It also takes a couple of hours to read through and understand all the rules and ins and outs of the game.We don't regret buying the game but I'm also not sure we would've bought it had we known how long of a game it is to actually play it (in real time). There are rules of how to play a shorter game inside the rule book which we haven't gotten to yet - so that may be really helpful to cut back the time.We had 5 people playing and it took us 6 hours to complete!I did have a really good time with it - it held my interest as well as the other adults playing. But this may be a more suited game for adults or young adults - our son had trouble staying focused and tuned in to what was going on during the game (he played for 3 hours before it was his bedtime).I also didn't like the fact that it is for kids and there is a tavern space on the board that has options on it that correspond with dice roles with things like: get drunk and passed out lose a turn and get tippsy and hit a farmer and things like that. I think that is inappropriate. I'm also not a huge fan of there being a huge breasted character with a tiny waist. Things like that put certain ideals into kids's minds as being acceptable and even funny (with the drunk actions in the tavern) and relating them to actions that are misperceptions and dangerous. I feel that every little thing matters with the development of a kids personality and thoughts. This is not an educational game of any kind, which is just fine - but just so people know for their own kids, if you are wanting that in this game you will not really find it.I would recommend this game - for older kids or adults. Just prepare in advance for a long game :)

First off, I am well above 30 years of age, so let's put this review into perspective. The first time I learned about this game was while watching an unboxing video on YouTube. The guy in the review was talking about how the game has existed since the 1980's but was still popular and was receiving new expansions to this day. This intrigued me, so I downloaded the Android game app to try it out. After a few games I was hooked and decided to buy the actual board game. The first thing I will say is that this game make me feel like a kid again. A lot of the rules and regions remind me of something I would have come up with playing with friends. Different outcomes based on different dice rolls.Progressing in levels of the game board, but only after you've gotten strong enough and only after you've gotten the magical talisman that will give you entry into the final area! Haha, so freaking awesome. The biggest complaint I hear about this game is that it's too complicated and it takes to long. Yes, I will agree that there are a lot of rules that go with the game. But basically all the rules you need to know are listed right on the actual game board. That makes it a whole lot simpler. On the flip side, it makes the actual game board HUGE! I've never seen a game board this big before. It's all good though. It's easier to keep track of things. With regards to the game time, it's very common for games to take several hours to complete and even longer than that of you are playing with multiple people. There are several ways to shorten the game time and still make the game fun. Ultimately, the important thing is to embrace the gameplay and journey you take in trying to reach the final Crown of Command for victory. So much fun with so many ways to win. It doesn't matter how many victorious games you have under your belt. The big question is, will the dice be in your favor?

I purchased Talisman as a gift for my friend who had been looking into playing a board game such as Dungeons and Dragons. After some research I discovered that D&D wasn't a great game to start off with, especially considering there are only two of us that want to play. I later found out about Talisman and that it was a great place to start and was viable for two players without getting boring or overly complicated.Since then we have both played many fun games together, and although at first learning the rules was a case of trial and error, we now find it one of the best ways to spend time together. To the game itself, the rules are interesting and diverse without being extremely complicated.Talisman has a number of interesting characters to play which keeps the game fresh as each character requires a slightly different play-style. The board is high quality and the art work is stunning. Everything is great quality and my friend greatly enjoys looking through the illustrated and informative rule book that even supplies some alternative game rules for quicker or differing games to mix things up. There are also expansions that can be bought later to keep things interesting.Overall as new players to RPG board games, we find it a real blast and would recommend it to anyone looking into getting into the genre or simply fancy playing a different kind of board game :D

this game is a fun role play game. without too much strategy. There is a little bit. But a lot of luck (dice rolling). IT reminds me of dungeons and dragons- but on a game board. IT takes a long time to play over 2 hours normally. BUt it's really easy to learn and play. It's kinds like a combination of monopoly, sorry, and ungle wiggly. What do I mean by that? well- remember uncle wiggly - when you got to read all the cards to move..in this game you draw cards to determine what is happening to your character - sorry- b/c really there was no straetegy really- you drew a card and moved that number... you roll dice to move your character.and monopoply- b/c you go all around the board.Of course there is much more to this game- unlike monopoply where your character (shoe or car etc) didn't matter in this game your character has certain special abilities that determine how you will play the game. (so yes there is some strategy) but not like when you are playing catan, or dominion, or civilizations!Over all its a fun long game that is easy on the brain. I'm a former D&D geek from years past and this is a fun way to "relive" so of those glory days of urky my fighter dwarf! yes I still remember my characters name- he was that good! ;-)Also- we play with just 2 players and it makes for a fun game. no extra "fake players" like you have to create in some games.

I grew up playing such games as HeroQuest, Dark World, Warhammer and D&D and having recently tired of computer games decided to return to my roots of boardgame dungeon crawls. After one game i am pleased to report that i thoroughly enjoyed Talisman. It is simple enough to learn in one trial game. We all got into the swing of things about 30 minutes into the game, the rules were clearly laid out within the rulebook with a handy index and all the board spaces had a reminder of some of the things you could or had to do so that you weren't desperately trying to remember all the rules at once. The art style was traditional high fantasy but engaging, being well presented on a durable folding board. In all the game was fun, engaging, difficult -though not overwhelming- and despite luck being a major factor, with skilled play and a bit of experience i expect the game to only get better. The witty banter enjoyed while playing, the good presentation, relatively straightforward rules and general fantasy ambiance of the game all combined to create a good evening well spent. Brilliant!UPDATE: After much more play, with gamers and non-gamers alike, I can happily report that Talisman goes from strength to strength, remaining enjoyable and providing great value for money, fun, and plenty of tense moments and strategy. Really recommended.

I ordered this having spent some time with the Digital Version, which garnered the interest of six year old boy. He asked whether there was a boardgame version and so I went ahead and ordered a copy.I am very pleased with the game and consider the contents to be of a resonably high standard. The fact that everything came packaged in its own press-seal bag surprised me as I was expecting normal shrink wrapped cards and plastic packets for tokens. The cards are a little on the small side but do save on playing space so they are suitable for purpose. The game istelf is fun and can be taught to a new player in only a few rounds (easier to teach when playing and explaining the rules at the same time).Depsite the recommended age on the box my boy manages to follow the main rules, if not some of the more intricate rules and the little strategy that there is.Being a dice game there is a lot of luck involved but this helps balance out the chance of winning when playing with my children and wife and not just becuase I know all the rules and may happen to be a better player (don't let the wife hear that)Would recommend for anyone/family looking for a little light entertainment and time together that doesn't revolve around a games console or TV.

After buying this game, I did a lot of looking on the web for what things could be done with it. By the time the box arrived I had a wish list a mile long! I enjoy the fantasy element of this and so do the members of my family. My 5 year old is always wanting to slay monsters and this is a good way to do it. He has the basics of the game pretty well in hand as he only has to count the pips on the dice to figure out whether he can move to the spaces he likes (Farms seem to draw him in), or if the dice allowed him to slay the monster. My daughter enjoys any time a toad gets on the board and laughs hysterically about my misfortune. I have already been asked to get an expansion or all of them and will probably be doing that before to long. This is a great way to hang with my family instead of just waiting for the next controller to be available on the video games. It makes an excellent way to help my kindergartner learn some math and start to read as well as my older daughters have to work out some plans for how to get from here to there with several forks in the road!I recommend games like this to everyone even if it is monopoly or dominoes because you can communicate on a level that video games just can't reach.

Some friends at work got me playing this game while they were reliving their childhood...shortly afterwards I've brought it and introduced it to even more people all of who love it!You start by choosing a character at random and then need to battle your way from the outer realm, into the inner realm fighting various monsters, or friends, along the way. Once there you can use the Crown of Command to vanquish your foes! Landing on one of the squares on the board will mean you have to draw a card from the pile and deal with the outcome it could be anything from a Talisman you require to get at the Crown of Command or a dragon to brighten your day! It's very simple to get into and it doesn't matter if you're playing against someone who's been playing it since version one, the game is down to the roll of the dice but produces hours of fun.If you're thinking of buying this so you can relive your childhood or introduce some new players to the game make sure you go over how much fun it is to become a toad! I know my group of friends where living in fear of that happening to them...If you just like the look of the game and haven't played before then go for it! You won't be disappointed!

I used to play this game as a teenager years ago and just recently recalled playing it. I remeber playing Talsiman for hours with my friends and thought my teenage sons might like it, and did they ever! We have played this game numerous times and still crave to play it more. Even when we aren't playing Talisman, we are talking about the last time we played and how the next time we play is going to be even better that the last! After doing a little price comparison shopping, I found Amazon to be the least expensive place to purchase. The game came sealed and in perfect condition. The board, cards and pieces are high quality IMHO. Nothing flimsy or cheap feeling. The only drawback, if you can call it that,is familiarizing yourself with the detailed rules. After that, the game is very easy to play and loads of fun!!The first few games may take you a while to play, but soon after you'll be finishing games within a couple hours, sometimes less.If you decide to purchase this item, I'm confident that you'll really enjoy it!Have fun!!

I played (I believe) the second edition as a kid. This edition, in my opinion, is better. Here's what I found:Pros:+ Real pieces (characters, gold, lives, etc.) that are durable.+ When you reach the end the game is over, no possibility that the game can keep going b/c a dragon killed off that character and everyone else has a chance to win.+ Game board is more solid and the artwork has been somewhat improved.+ I like the characters more from this edition. They have more attributes that make game play better.+ Fate tokens. You can roll the die again if you want to.Cons:- Adventure cards are too small. They seem like they got left in the dryer.- The board is a little big,so you better not play on a TV tray.- The board is still the same as the original. I was hoping they might "improve" things just a little. This game is still a blast to play, and I was able to get my wife (who doesn't really like fantasy stuff) to play. I would definitely buy it again. Well worth the money.

For players who like a meaty game, Talisman will give you hours of fun time. A typical game can last over two hours and the rules are more complicated than Monopoly but it isn't hard to master. For a modest investment in learning the game, you can have many afternoons and evenings of fun with kids age 10 and up, great for adults getting together for a game night as well. We play with all adults, mixed kids and adults, and all games are fun.The large number of cards and races make for varied reply and the available expansions are well worth addeding for new races, cards and regions. There is a random component to the game but the focus is more on steady advancement of your character which favors good play over luck. For those who play RPGs,this game could be considered "D&D lite", a good way to get a fantasy gaming fix in when you can't get your regular group together.Materials are sturdy and the game holds up to lots of use.

We bought this as an eighth birthday present for our son, who was deperate to play a fantasy game with figurines. We were worried that it would be too difficult for him, but it has been fantastic. It took a while to read the rules the first time that we played, but once we got going he picked it up very fast. His birthday was two weeks ago and he and his nine year old sister have played literally non-stop since then, all day long (it's the school holidays) and with very little argument. I've also had a couple of games with them and I also love it! Game lengths are longer the more players you have. With just my son and daughter games last perhaps an hour and a half or so.Some rules are a little unclear - circumstances sometimes arise which aren't really covered by the rule book- but you can just make a decision yourself about what should happen; we haven't found it problematic.

Talisman was one of my first board games back when it was originally released by Games Workshop and I fondly remember sitting around a table with my friends playing it. Talisman is a solid all round fantasy game and I've always found it a great game for not only introducing people who wouldn't normally stray much further than monopoly in their board game choices into something a little bit different, but it also features enough rpg elements to satisfied a seasoned AD&D player like myself.Fantasy Flight, the company who have licensed and rereleased this classic from GW have produced another solid update of a well loved game, the board is lovely and the cards, counters and figures have all had some work put into them.On top of that any liver of the game has a whole host of expansions to choose from once they've conquered their friends and family too many times in the original.
