This is a beautifully-presented game with simple rules but a surprising depth of strategy. Players compete for the Emperor's favour, scoring points as they complete the objectives set out for them on their objective cards, all relating to the big man's bamboo garden. Plot cards are relatively easy to score, awarding a small number of points for laying out the garden just so. Panda cards are in the middle, awarding you points for feeding the panda while the gardener has the toughest job of all, but also the most points on offer. One off the interesting things about this game is the fact that players share the resources. Everyone gets to control the gardener (he helps to grow the bamboo)and the panda (he eats the bamboo) and you can all tap into the irrigation network. That's quite clever. And it's also mildly educational, having already prompted a conversation about what "irrigation" means with my eight-year-old (he's winning 2-0 as I write this). With so many ways to score points, there's rarely a dull moment and there is the added weather mechanic that allows you to bend the rules within the rules themselves, if you get what I mean? No... Okay...Usually, a player gets to take two DIFFERENT actions per turn. Depending on the weather (shown on a six-sided dice) he might get three instead, or be allowed to take the same action twice, or move the panda out of sequence, and so on. It would have been a good game without this mechanic but having it there makes every turn exciting yet so simple and quick that you never feel like you're waiting around for your go.Also, the victory mechanic is good. The first player to score a preset number of cards gains the Emperor's favour (itself worth extra points) but then everybody else gets one more go. So it's not just a race to play the cards; you need to make sure you've scored enough to be clear of your opponents as there's always that chance they might score enough in the last round to overtake you and steal the win. All wonderfully tense and exciting stuff!Added to all this, the components are a joy to behold. The little wooden bamboo canes are very cute, but the gardener and the panda steal the show - and they're pre-painted too! This game is an absolute masterclass in gameplay and production values and I expect we'll get many more hours of fun from it yet!

This game is a good modern-euro game. It has a similar point scoring mechanism to Ticket to Ride, and people I have played with have agreed that it is a similar level of complexity (i.e. a good "gateway" game for people who still think that Monopoly and Scrabble are the best games out there). This game stands out for being one of the most relaxing games. Though it is competitive, both the theme and the mechanics are quite peaceful. Players are more likely to accidentally help each other than hinder. There is nothing wrong with this game (if you're happy with the theme), but the only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is that it has a bit less replayability than some other games,I suspect because of it's lack of tension. After the first time I played it, I did want to play again, but after that day I have never felt the urge to play it more than once. The lack of 1 star should be seen as my personal preference to have a little bit more tension in an average game, not as a sign of the game lacking anything it claims to include. It is a good medium sized game, lasting about an hour, and at the end you will usually feel happy yet ready for whatever game will be played next.

This game is just full of cuteness. Who doesn't love a panda bear? Especially one so cute as in Takenoko. A game that appeals visually. It is probably the most beautiful game I have played. I wasn't sure if the game itself would do it for me. But the game plays very nicely and has a peaceful feel to it. As someone else said, your moves can sometimes help other players rather than hinder. I would recommend this game for families. I can see kids really enjoying the beauty and fun in this game. That said adults will very much appreciate the beauty and fun of this game too and it a great choice for a relaxed game session. Rules are easy and the rulebook itself is beautiful (surprise, surprise).Easy to learn and fairly quick to play. You can see quite quickly this game has a unique feel to it, but there is a strong game in there too.Only negative - it's a bit expensive but everything you get is good quality.Very nice game and I hope you join me in making 'nom nom nom' noises when I move the panda to eat some bamboo! :)

If your into gaming in a proper way (i.e. beyond Monopoly and Trivial Pursuit) this is a great game for introducing younger players and those less geeky than you. Each player has a set of objectives (to grow bamboo, feed the panda and lay out more grid tiles) which are achieved by working together (although this is unintentional). Like many games you have two actions on each go to try and achieve these tasks as well as a dice throw which may or may not help. Playing time is not too long (usually can be done within an hour or less). Rules may seem complex at first but even my 4 and 5 year old boys and the Grandparents were OK after a couple of practice runs. The price tag may seem high but the production values are reflected in this. Each piece of bamboo as well as the figures are very well made and durable - almost too good to use! Overall:PROS:Quick, well made pieces, easy to pick up rules, endless variety of games and fun.CONS:High price.

I purchased this game due to some great reviews. On first impressions I thought it was a bit girly and child like. However, once I played it for the first time I got over this and enjoyed it for what it was, a fantastically fun family game, with good strategy elements and a little bit of a cutthroat element thrown in to introduce the younger members of your family to the concept of 'getting done over'! Which, lets face it, they all need to learn at some point! The parts are good quality which is a nice touch. The suggested age range is 8+ which I think it spot on. My 6 year old can play this game, albeit with some help. And he absolutely loves it. So I wouldn't want to discourage anyone with younger kids from buying it.Also, it is definitely not just a kids game and have played with friends, it just gets a bit more heated!

Got this very recently and have already played it 4 times. I love the game and it's simplicity. In terms of rules, it has slightly more depth than, say, ticket to ride europe, and it sort of scratches the same itch of building stuff on the board (bamboo gardens in this game).Although there may be some balance issues as in your draw determines for the most part what points you rack up...but it's also a lot to do with your decisions in the game. So it's a mixture of luck, risk/reward strategy. It's a colorful relaxing game that anyone can enjoy (unless you hate pandas). I got it after watching Wil Wheaton play this at geek and Sundry's tabletop series.Have to warn potential buyers that the panda and gardener are no longer the same size as in wil wheaton's episode on takenoko, although that may just be my imagination.

First thing to mention is that the game itself: the board, pieces, cards, etc is beautifully made. You'll need a bit of space as the tabletop we played on felt a little cramped as the game went on! There's a few rules to take in at the beginning, but read through and it becomes quite intuitive. As a strategy game, it's definitely on the milder side with not a huge amount of tactics you can employ (have only played as 4-player so don't quite know the dynamics in 2- or 3-player games....). Having said that, it does what all good board games should do: the next game is always different and so whilst, ultimately, players who have played strategy games before hold the upper hand, this definitely warrants a place on the shelf as a fun, relaxed game to while away an hour or two.

My husband & I love this game (our kids aren't old enough yet!)There can be a huge gap in score depending on which cards are drawn though, so we add a rule that we can't complete 2 of the same category in a row (preventing tonnes of panda cards bring completed subsequently & easily). That way, there are easy tasks & tricky tasks. We also play with the incentive that for every set of 3 completed cards of different category, we gain 3 extra points at the end of the game. This makes us choose all 3 instead of just 2.We've noticed our scores are much closer this way, it's more competitive & also pretty strategic. All our friends also enjoy Takenoko & request it when they're round.Highly recommended for its beautiful artwork, playability & outright fun.Excellent game!

My son's choice for birthday money spending after we watched it played on TableTop with Wil Wheaton - great game, lovely quality board tiles and character pieces! It's not complicated, but I'm glad that we had watched the episode through as it allowed us to pretty much just play straight from the box with only a brief refresher of rules, without having to read through the whole rule book - that could be the ADHD family experience talking, but if you feel the same, the episode is worth a watch :)Our games usually last 40-60ish minutes and requires a large area with set up, so this is definitely for dedicated table top game time. We've played this game so much and still love it every time - replayable and won't drive parents insane, either :)

This is a game of strategy which is quick to learn though there are ways you can make initial game simpler (for example, we did not use the weather dice until we were more confident).. Each game takes less than an hour. You need quite a large flat surface to play on, it would not work as well as a travel game.It works just as well with two players as it does with more.Players have to complete challenges to do with growing bamboo, helping a panda eat bamboo and creating certain configurations of gardens.Quite good for teaching children the strategy of counting cards. There are different numbers of the different tiles (fewer pink)and my daughter lost one game waiting to build a pink pattern when all the pink cards were gone.

What a gloriously beautiful game. The artwork and finishing on this product is superb and is easily the nicest looking game I own.The game is easy to teach/learn and play. The mechanics are simple but thanks to the mission cards you choose then each game is different and there is no one strategy that works. It very much depends on what other players choose to do.4 Player max is a drawback for bigger groups but the balance in the game suits this number of players and there is limited downtime between your turns, especially as you will be waiting to see what other players do as it impacts your goals. It's definitely in my top 5 games at the moment.

I bought this game at my local game shop knowing the basic rules and theme for 30 £ meaning to have it to introduce people to board games. It is far from just a simple game ( Not meaning it is complicated ) and is fun and quick to learn, I have had it for three weeks and my family keep wanting to play it. Each of my family members likes a different aspect and mechanic and I agree myself that it has well built mechanics. Even the components are well built and store very nicely into a well designed box. All in all, If you understand how the game works, Go ahead. You can't lose!

This is a brilliant game, and has turned out to be my girlfriends favorite. The quality of the pieces is excellent and the cute designs really make it a pretty game to play (i like my board games to look great). It's simple enough to be enjoyed by younger people, but there's enough strategy to make it quite competitive for any age.I play a lot of games with just my girlfriend, and it's hard to tell what works with 2 players and what claims to but fails horribly, so incase there's anyone in teh same situation, this one works just as well with 2 as it does with a group

Fantastic game for the whole family and can be played with just 2 players. My boyfriend and I find it hard to come across interesting games we can play on date nights that aren't too quick-fire or repetitive, and we just love this one :)You gain points by doing three different actions, which means you aren't always doing the same thing (unless you always pick the panda like I do!).My 6-year-old nephew loves it too, and was very proud to have understood how the irrigation worked!

13.1.2015

A great family game we normally play this as a family however I have got some more dedicated gamers to play it on game night so this is certainly suitable for 7/8 and way up..The game sees you take the role of court member trying to look after a Panda and a garden for the emperor, the panda was naturally a gift for the emperor. This is quick to setup and put away which is always a bonus in our house and has a great depth of strategy for a family friendly game.
