Okay, maybe that's going a little too far - decide for yourself. The DS214+, and that 'plus' is important, is a significant step up from the older DS214 and arguably even the DS214Play. This is credible hardware - it can't compete with a modern desktop PC but with a dual core CPU and 1GB of RAM it has enough processing power to serve HD video while running some background apps as well. There are two LAN connections, both of which need to be connected to get the maximum speed and only then if your router or switch is also 802.3ad compliant. If not, don't despair, data transfer is still impressively fast. The DSM (DiskStation Manager) is accessed through a web interface that has its own desktop-style GUI.There are a number of additional apps available in the included Package Manager, but even more if you enable the community depository from Synocommunity - this will give you access to, eg Sickbeard and SABnzb apps, if that's your thing. A friend tell me they work very well. You can, obviously, set up Network Shares and access the shared folders on the drive without going through the DSM, if you so choose. There are two USB 3.0 ports on the back which can be used as additional network shares or, more likely, for back-up. The front has a USB 2.0 slot which, according to a review I read but which I haven't tried, can be used in conjunction with a button marked "C" on the front panel to quickly copy media off a flash drive on to the NAS. There's no documentation with the NAS, except for a simple pictogram installation chart, so how you would ever figure that out on your own is a mystery to me.I've literally scratched the surface of what it can do. You can access files and some management functions using smartphone apps, access it over the internet, set it up as a personal cloud storage system. It's more expensive than other lower-specced, twin-drive NAS solutions but you'll be glad they haven't scrimped on the hardware. As is typical the DS214+ is running Linux and you're able to get your hands dirty over Terminal/ssh if you want to.Solid piece of kit. Pricey, but recommended.

Not really IT literate, and getting on a bit - to the stage where the teenage daughter tends to step in when dad gets stuck, I was wary of buying the synology in case it was too complicated for me. However, friends who generally do know what they are talking about, and reviews in the UK's What HiFi magazine suggested this was a fantastic bit of kit to have to cope with over 1TB of music and let me play through the Sonos wireless system. Bought the diskstation and WD red disks separately.Unpacked the boxes, fitted the disks (easy!), plugged in and followed the instructions - hey presto ( after a period of loading and indexing all of the files from various other disks in the house)a one box solution that has run without issue since - though I have taken further advice and run two ethernet cables from the synology to my router to offer even more bandwidth for all the toys, phones, tablets, laptops, TV, XBox etc. Highly recommended

The 213+ was an excellent NAS for home or small business use, so I was pleased to find that the replacement model for 2014 has maintained the standard. Easy to setup. Reliable hardware. Good support for PC, Apple and Android devices. The front loading drive bays are a great improvement on the outgoing model, and overall the box has a high quality feel. The metal case is very solid and results in a much quieter operation than the plastic enclosures favoured by some competitors. My only criticism is that my, UK supplied, device was shipped with only a european style mains lead. This is no major problem for an IT department (where there always seems to be a box of spare mains cables lying around!)but it could be frustrating for the home user. The product really ought to include a suitable cable or adapter for the country in which it is sold.

Received the Diskstation very quickly. Unpacked, installed the drives and had it up and running in less than 10 minutes. Installed the WD Red 3TB drives and the whole unit is quiet, fast and has so far been reliable. Have 4 users with XBMC using SMB shares and all running and streaming fine. One thing I did like is when you have a power cut the drive shuts down and does not restart again so when you get power blips the unit is protected.I wanted to transfer the contents from an external USB hard-drive to the unit using the front USB and one button copy but that did not work. Plugged it into one of the rear USB ports and then was able to drag the contents onto the drive using the Diskstationsoftware and got there eventually.Really pleased with the product and would recommend to all.

I've had a few Synologys (DS213j, DS411Slim, and DS414j) and this is by far the best of the lot. The Marvell Armada XP is fast, and sips power.Ive have my DS214+ set up as follows:DS214+ with 2x500Gb WD Blue laptop drives as Volume 1DX513 with 5x5TB WD Red as Volume 2.The DS214+ in this configuration uses less than 20W with the drives running, and easily hibernates the DX513 when the main storage array isn't being used. This for me is a better solution than using all the drives in a 5-bay Synology, as making all the drives sleep is difficult or impossible if you're running a lot of services on the machine. With the volume on an external unit, the drives are only used for storage,so DSM can spin them down easily.

Absolutely perfect. This device is really good. I run lots of different services on the server including the media server, a cloud backup solution and more! It's got just enough power to everything I need. If you undecided about a NAS box, this is probably the one for you! I liked the + features that are a bit more business orientated and are exactly what I need. I use this with a Crashplan headless client. It works great. If you are doing anything like Crashplan, you will need the slightly higher spec boxes. All in all, very impressed and I certainly would recommend. It was very easy to set up. I'm also glad I got it with the drives, just made everything a little easier.

I've had a NAS before (an old Netgear) and must say, the Synology is in an entirely different league. Fast and incredibly functional, with a large range of installable packages of all kinds.Setup was extremely intuitive - didn't need the manual at all. Same goes for software updates (the Cloud Station package has been updated since I got it); just press the button in the browser-based DSM interface and it just works. So, in short, I can say that the Synolgy just works. And it works very well indeed.

Bought as a replacement backup disk for a family of Mac Users along with 2 Western Digital 3TB Red drives. The User Guides are all online and whilst comprehensive for Microsoft leave a bit to be desired for Macintosh. It took me a couple of days trial and error to get it up and running as an Apple Time Machine, but it can be done and now it has been it is excellent. Drop to 4 stars due to relatively poor User Guide and time it took to set up correctly.

Just works. Bought 2 x 3GB server class drives, can barely hear the thing or the fan. Easy to set up. Easy to connect. Set up as a server on our home network. Plugs in to the router via cable. All the wired and wifi computers can see the router and store and retrieve files from it. Not tested using it remotely out of the house yet, too many things to experiment with, but for the basics so far, its just good.

Great for SME's looking for a cheap alternative to a server! Couple it up with Office 365 email exchange and you have a full IT system for not a lot of money. If on the other hand you are looking to store torrents etc then the system is quick enough on the streaming, quiet and discreet to stick out the way somewhere and when the cyber crimes unit arrives small enough to burn with one can of lighter fluid!

Good little NAS, the fan packed in on the first day but I contacted Synology and they replaced it for free with next day delivery so I can't complain. It vibrates a bit now and again which is annoying because other than that my office is pretty much silent.Network speeds are good, lots of functionality that I don't tend to use but I am happy with it and would buy it again.

My previous NAS produced by a well known manufacturer worked satisfactorily for several years but I lost all my data after a reboot. I bought the Synology DS214+ to replace my previous NAS after having read many reviews about Synology DS214+. The unit is very reliable and easy to use. I love it. I recommend it very highly.

This really is a top quality product. Arrived when expected, easy to install and works like a dream when loaded with Western Digital Red NAS Drives. After continuous use for over 4 months now, this has been a dramatic improvement on the previous HDD Dock storage method we use for our MAC based system

I am not a super expert, but this is a great product. After a right due diligence I decided to go for this and never really regret the choice.
