Like most folks, I have been forced to adopt energy saving bulbs against my will.My observations on this particular bulb could equally apply to all current Compact Fluorescent bulbs (CFL's), replacing the old BC and Screw-in incandescents. These 20W 'energy savers' give out almost as much light as a 60W incandescent, in my judgement, but only after a considerable warm up time. I fitted two bulbs in a central ceiling light in my study. It takes around half an hour before the lights reach full light output. Once warmed up I would say the light level is acceptable and therefore someone might say one is saving almost two thirds of the energy consumed by an equivalent tungsten incandescent. But thereare real problems. My surface mounted light fitting was designed for the original incandescent bulbs. The bulbs fit horizontally and the space is limited. The new CFL's only just fit and there is limited space between the bulky electronic ballast collars and the metal fitting plate. That means the ballast gets hot and that shortens the lamp life. I have had to replace the bulbs three times in the last three years. I reckon that an old fashioned tungsten filament would outlast CFL's in this light fitting! The new CFL's are TEN TIMES the cost of the old tungsten filament incandescents. No wonder General Electric and the other manufacturers were keen to have the old technology banned. They could increase their sales revenue greatly, while pretending that the new stuff was not expensive, really; you wouldn't be spending so much on electricity and you wouldn't have to replace the bulbs so often.Well, I'm afraid that I use rather more electricity than I did before. I have to leave the light on all the time because it takes so long to warm up, and I can't read anything for the first half hour after I switch the thing on.Rather like radioactive materials, these CFL's have a 'half life'. When they are a bit long in the tooth, the warm up period extends and the light output drops off significantly. As they barely emit enough light to begin with, you may find yourself having to replace them before they blow up on you. Bang goes the claim for a longer life, you have to fork out six or seven quid for a new bulb.CFL's give out a lot less 'wasted heat' than incandescents. It's tue that an incandescent gives out several times as much heat as an 'equivalently' rated CFL. However, in the UK, we usually need that heat most of the year, so it is not always 'wasted'. The saving might be real in hotter countries where air conditioning is frequently used. Even there, how many people are stupid enough to sit around sweltering in the daytime with the lights on? It's only going to make any difference in the evening before they go to bed. Mostly they have been using full size fluorescents for years anyway.Other known problems with CFL's; they don't work outside; round here it's too cold out there. They are no good for movement detectors, security lights and so on. Dimmer circuits present all manner of problems for the new bulbs. All the above present an unscrupulous industry with more opportunites to fleece the general public. Oh yes, and, of course you can't mix CFL's and incandescents on the same circuit. You'd better throw away those old bulbs you paid for, they are no use anymore. You have to fork out for stack of the 'new technology'.The new bulbs are a double health hazard. Old people need good light to get around. When they turn the light on in the night, it is going to be too dim for them to see and they will fall downstairs. Hospitals are are another lucrative market for the peddlars of electrical appliances.CFL's contain mercury and other other nasties. Loads of people who make them in chinese factories have been made sick. Pretty soon we are going to be blamed for that.As you can see I am not a fan. I have nothing against this particular bulb, it just happens to be the CFL that I used here.As Bob Dylan sang; "the world has gone dark before my eyes".
