I'm a keen student of WWII history as well as an avid player of WWII era strategy games, having grown up on (and still consuming!) a diet of 'Panzer General' and 'Allied General' among others. There's hardly a wealth of such games for the console market though, so I was immediately drawn to 'Sudden Strike 4' as it seemed something that would be right up my street.A real-time tactics game set in WWII's European and Eastern Front theatre's of war, you can choose to play a total of more than twenty missions spread out over three campaigns (Allied, German, and Russian) all of which occur during some of the most famous battles of WWII, from the German Invasion of France, to Operation Barbarossa,to the D-Day landings (Operation Overlord), to the fall of Berlin.During each campaign you may choose from one of three real life Generals to lead your formations of troops and armoured vehicles, each of which specializes in a particular doctrine - armoured, infantry, or support. Famous Panzer General Heinz Guderian for example specializes in the 'armoured' doctrine, and so provides advantages to tanks and other armoured vehicles in the form of skills that can be purchased with experience acquired over the course of a campaign and attributed to them.Depending on the doctrine chosen, these skills include things such as equipping infantry with hand grenades, allowing tank crew to repair their own vehicles without the need for a repair vehicle, armour-piercing anti-tank rounds, extra ammunition, or damage reduction. There are 37 skills in total to be acquired, meaning that there is an almost limitless number of combinations that can be applied to customizing your fighting force depending on your preferences.Missions are designed to reflect the circumstances of the battles they are based upon, requiring you to achieve a series of scripted objectives. For example in the earliest days of the German invasion of France you must cross the French countryside bypassing or eliminating sporadic resistance provided by the combined French and British forces who are retreating and desperately attempting to slow your blitzkrieg by destroying bridges, requiring you to use specialist units to repair them or build a pontoon bridge so that you can continue your progress. Later your Panzers will find themselves under counter-attack by heavily armoured British Matilda II tanks just as was the case in the real life Battle of Arras, requiring you to fight a holding action whilst you bring up your dreaded 88mm guns to destroy the British vehicles, It all makes for very authentically recreated scenarios.Your units will only ever have the vehicles and equipment that was available to them during that period of the war, so forget any ideas of marching into France in 1940 accompanied by fearsome Tiger or Panther tanks - you'll have to wait until much later in the campaign to use them, and early on you will have to persist with much more mundane vehicles such as the Panzer II (already obsolete at that point) and Panzer III.Where Sudden Strike excels is in it's attention to detail.Much like their real life counterparts, each unit has individual attributes. Tanks have different armour values (health) on the front, sides, and rear to reflect their real-life equivalents, meaning that facing your tanks towards the threat becomes especially important as it prevents showing the enemy your more vulnerable side and rear armour. Proper use of facing and awareness of your armour strengths and vulnerabilities can make the difference between a vehicle receiving a critical hit (such as catastrophic ignition of its fuel or ammunition stores from a penetrating hit, killing all on board), or a secondary hit that may only temporarily disable the vehicle, allowing it to be repaired in the field and leaving its crew alive to fight on once it is.Fuel is required to move and must be replenished at regular intervals, and is provided by a supply truck that in turn needs to be kept topped up through the use of the various fuel stations and ammo dumps that can be found or captured around each mission. It doesn't matter how fearsome your tanks are if they don't have fuel in their bellies or shells in their guns. Additionally vehicles can be disabled by enemy fire, or throw a track traveling cross country, requiring the use of an engineer to put them back in action. Meanwhile troops can be healed through the use of a medic.Weapons must be supplied with ammunition (with separate counts for high explosive rounds, anti-tank rounds, and machine gun ammunition in the case of your tanks) and each behaves according to their own individual physics meaning that some weapons may not be effective against certain targets. The German 20mm and 37mm guns for example were completely ineffective against the thick frontal armour of the British Matilda II tank or the Russian T34, requiring you to explore new tactics such as circling the enemy.Trucks, jeeps, and APC's (such as the British Universal Carrier or the US M3 Half track) all have individual troop carrying capacity. Every unit has its own speed and levels of maneuverability. Each weapon has an effective lethal range, and also an effective spotting range. It's no good having a German 8.8 cm KwK 43 gun with an effective lethal range of about 2500m if you can't see the enemy, and visibility can be increased with another nice touch of authenticity by asking your commander to pop the hatch on his tank to stick his head out and take a look with his binoculars. The weather and terrain meanwhile plays a huge part, with the environment having a great impact on line of sight, movement speeds, or whether a piece of terrain can even be traversed at all. Forest decreases line of sight for example or may be completely impassible by vehicles depending on how dense it is. Swamps can cause your units to slow, get stuck, or even sink altogether. How passable water is meanwhile depends on how deep it is. Shallow streams can be easily crossed, where as deep river will require a bridge. Frozen rivers can be crossed without assistance, but if the ice is broken by enemy fire your units will sink never to be seen again!Air support is available in some missions, but is always limited and must be used sparingly. This can range from a spotter plane to scout the terrain ahead for threats, dive bombers that specialize in destroying single targets, or level bombers which are capable of plastering a wide area with their bomb loads. Each vehicle needs the requisite number of crew to function properly, and crew can be killed in conflict thus reducing the effectiveness of vehicles or rendering them entirely useless altogether. A truck for example needs no more than one crew member (the driver) to operate, but most tanks for example require a minimum of five crew (gunner, loader, driver, radio operator, and commander) if they are to function at optimum levels, and a really nice touch is that abandoned enemy vehicles can be occupied by your own troops and pressed into service, which is another nice touch of authenticity as the Germans and Russians in particular were well know for pressing captured enemy equipment into service. Crews can over time and with experience be promoted to elite status.Success or failure will be determined by your knowledge and familiarity with all of these elements of game play, your skill at being able to recognise the unique nature of each threat you face, and your ability to use the right units for the job of countering it.Graphically the game looks excellent. Vehicles and troops are faithfully recreated to be picture perfect versions of their historical counterparts, meanwhile environments are also beautifully rendered and range from small French villages, to rolling fields of corn, thick copses of trees, man built bunkers, trenches, and other fortifications, and ruined war torn towns. Each part of the environment is also interactive, so buildings and fortifications can be occupied by troops to provide them with a defensive and strategic advantage, where as trees, hills, grass verges, and tall grass all provide a measure of soft and hard cover than can defeat incoming projectiles or simply make your units more difficult to see and hit. The environment is also destructible, so a swath can be driven through fields, trees and walls felled by your tanks, and buildings destroyed with a enough application of firepower.Sound wise the game is functional rather than spectacular. There's some nice voice work pre and post mission, each unit will respond with a verbal - and sadly *very* repetitive - recognition when you activate them, explosions and shots are faithfully enough recreated, and there's a nice little militaristic musical score to accompany each mission.Control wise, navigation is done with the left stick, whilst holding down the L2 trigger allows you to navigate much quicker. X selects a unit (whilst double clicking X activates all units of that type nearby), whilst O confirms an order to attack or move. Shoulder buttons allow you to switch rapidly through units, whilst the R2 trigger brings up a skill wheel that enables you to choose from that units special abilities, or options such as exiting a building/vehicle or deploying a towed anti-tank or artillery piece. Its hardly an intuitive system, takes a while to get used to, and can be incredibly stressful and frustrating when you're in the heat of battle and need to react quickly, but overall its a passable system that gets much easier with practice. The only other area in which I think the game disappoints is that its somewhat liniar. It's not possible to go 'off mission' in any of the scenarios or think outside the box. Objectives are predetermined, as are your starting units and reinforcements, and how you capture each objective is generally done in the same way each time. It's a real shame also that the makers of the game didn't introduce a few fictional scenarios. It would have been cool to roll across the British countryside in a 'what if?' version of Operation Sea Lion for example. This version of the game is the limited 'Day One' edition, and as such includes a digital art book, soundtrack, and interchangeable cover sleeves.Overall though what you have here is a superb WWII era real time strategy that is easy to play (although difficult to master), which will satisfy the needs of any fan of WWII gaming or the RTS genre.Recommended!

I'm a huge Sudden Strike fan. Played the originals on PC 1, 2 & 3. However nowadays I'm more of a console gamer, would really like to play this on PC, but right now PS4 is my only option. This is different from the originals, but doesn't stray too far from the old games, which is good and bad. Good because it throws me back to my childhood when I played these, it is a good game and plays like the originals. Bad because, if you didn't play the originals and are not used to the, lets say 'challenging' (broken) AI behavior (which lets be honest, by now they should have fixed since the old ones) it can be frustrating. Word of warning, you will need to micro manage your units to get them to go where you want.Obviously this can prove a little challenging at first with the PS4 controller, but once you're into the swing of things it becomes second nature.RTS Games get little to no love on consoles, so to see one make an appearance and such a good brand is worth a go. To be clear this isn't a dumb down point, click, go here destroy things. You will need to use strategy, patience and get used to the controls / AI. This game will be much better after a couple of patches which sort out the controls / AI issues. For fans of the old SS games or RTS fans, I would say it's worth playing, get on it ASAP. If you're a casual RTS player, get it, but maybe not at full price, once it's dropped. As I said before it's a great game, with everything it needs right there, it just needs a couple of patches to refine it.

Fun game, similar to the older series of Sudden Strike games that were released on PC. Takes a little while to get used to the pace of the game. Also it is no cakewalk. Early missions can be easy enough, but it get's very difficult as you move through campaigns. You can drop the difficulty to easy and complete these missions. But on normal (nevermind hard) I found that you have to play slowly and carefully or all your tanks get blown to bits in moments. Hence the name 'sudden'. Still a challenge is good and sliding through every mission would probably mean uninstalling the game pretty quick. There are lot's of good DLC for this game also, I have not played it yet,but you'd do very well to finish it all to give you an idea of the depth. Playing the game is great fun if you like games like this (similar to Men of War). It can just be very hard at times and the selection can be a bit awkward when you need to select fast. Probably better with a mouse, if you can get one for the Ps4. This is a solid title and a low price. You'll have fun playing if you play a lot of the more sober war strategy games, great visuals and detail. Bargain price.

A very enjoyable game. The controls, although fiddly in some places, are more than useable. There also seems to be a big play in terms of the poor ai in some reviews but I've mother any real problems certainly nothing that spoils the game. The only thing is criticise it for is that it's not exactly new gen console quality. Whilst I accept it's a doffent type of game, little things like when bridges are destroyed they just change state to destroyed as opposed to collapse nicely in terms of animation. The maps are also vey 2 dimensional, there are some slight undulations whoch can cause tactical blockages of firing lines but not enough is made of terrain affecting tactics. It's just limited to making the soldiers a little harder to see in bushes. A bit 2006. Also an option to select your starting units would be good addition. Spend9ng a limited amount of resource points to pick you style of play would be great. Those criticisms aside it's a lot of fun, a nice change and addition to the ps4 game library and whilst not worth the full price it's certain my worth the 27 quid I spend on if from another in line retailer.

The game does require a little bit of time to perfect controls. For instance it took me ages to learn how to re-allocate men and material into groups (pause, click on one asset only and then press and hold R3 to allocate to a new group. then click on others to allocate to the same numbered group). You also have to pause the game at various points to issue your instructions as there are too many to give in real time. However once you have mastered this then it becomes a really good WW2 simulator. Its also very unforgiving on the first pass so you may end up having to do the scenarios little by little and continually saving so as to avoid getting your army overrun. However that realism and constant nervousness about the enemy appearing gives it real bite as a simulator. I was a big RUSE fan and this gives quite a lot of the same sort of gameplay. Very similar to Panzers on PC

Am a huge fan of the Sudden Strike games so was thrilled to see this version released. So far I am really pleased with it, it is very much like the original games so if you liked them then you will like this. Takes a bit of getting used to playing it on the PS4 and it is slightly more difficult to control your units, but once you get used to it then it is fine. The tutorial and help prompts help you master this as you go.The graphics are really good and there are some cool new units and unit options for them.Have only played a few of the started missions and not encountered any issues yet.Overall I love it and would recommend to anyone interested in RTS and WW2 games.

Best strategy game I have played in years. Graphics and sound are amazing. Very challenging, realistic gameplay that requires careful planning to complete all the mission objectives. One thing I do find annoying is that you have to be at close range when enemies appear. If the enemy can see all my troops, tanks and vehicles at any range then so should I. Even when you use the reconnaissance plane it only reveals the enemy positions for a few seconds before they disappear again...

One of my favourite games was Command and Conquer, and this games is so much like that, once you start to play this then you will find it hard to put down, i have played Sudden Strike on pc, but this one is far better, so come on all you would be generals, go out and buy this.

Fantastic game, so easy to pick up and totally immersive. You'll never play the missions the same each time over and over. Each time you may make that little silly mistake that costs you dearly. At last a true RTS for Playstation. You will NOT be disappointed!

Brilliant game controls slightly more complex on xbox rather then pc but apart from that no problems graphics are great would be nice to have a zoom in pan feature and angle turning. But still really enjoy the game.

Just got the game and think it’s great., although takes a while to get used to everthing. Bit of a slight delay with it being delivered but got here in the end and am really happy with the game so far

Great Game! If like me you like an old school RTS you will enjoy this. It is Not perfect but easy to play as long as you invest a little time. Wish there was more games like this on the PS4!

I got this game for my son as part of his Christmas present. He loves it, he says it's got extra missions, campaigns on it compared to the previous edition of he game. Worth it he says.

Great game. A challenge for any strategy player. The one player learning scenarios can be real tough. Looking forward to completing them to gain experience before venturing out online.
