I was looking for a replacement security light to replace a Timeguard SLW89 and the Steinel L- 12 caught my attention.The Timeguards are great as a bulkhead security light and work well but unfortunately the plastic they are made from doesnt like sunlight UV rays and they discolour and the light loses its brightness over time. The L - 12 on the other hand has a metal finish and the description mentions the lens is UV stabilised so I ordered just the one for now.The light itself is very well made, typical German quality and easy to fit with all the required fixings included in the box, (the rawlplugs require a 6mm masonary drill bit by the way) and there are sealed rubber grommets for the cable entry to keep it waterproof.I fitted this easily in under half an hour and it does look good - classy even!I was able to set the day/nighttime setting to just when I wanted it to come on at dusk, and the duration of the light to be on for around a minute simply enough and it works perfectly. Another bonus is that it doesn't falsely turn on in wind or by small cats or hedgehogs entering my garden that the Timeguards used to do, the sensor seems to be just right in this regard. It will detect a child or adult and the range is about 8m in my placement, almost 1.8m high on the wall.All in all I am really pleased with the light itself, but there is one small 'niggle' that I'm trying to fix. The light takes a E27 (Edison Screw) lamp and LED's are the way to go these days for energy saving, but they tend to have the bottom 1/3rd portion of the lamp covered in plastic for some reason. This means the light is bright at the top if you chose the right LED but only the top 3 segments of the light are illuminated and the bottom 2 are a lot dimmer. Another small point is the plastic lens is quite thick and diffuses the light so you have to upgrade the lamp inside to get enough light out of it for your requirements.These are only small negatives I had to point out as the light would look so much better with even light through all the 5 segments and less diffused and a bit clearer would mean less wattage required. I've settled on a 13w Philips 6500K (100W equivalant) for now as it gives enough light for my aging eyes.Hopefully a LED manufacturer will make a lamp that gives light out to the bottom of the lamp as well as the top sometime soon.

Very high quality outside light at a good price. The value in this light is in the quality and sophistication of the PIR, which is around 6 times larger than my previous outside light and is why I bought it, having done considerable research. I have a small tree outside the front of my house which drove my previous light (and me) demented with it constamtly triggering my old light at all hours. No longer!Good points - very high quality, simple to fit, good instructions, feels like it will last a long time. PIR works well, has an adjustable range and triggers withput delay.Bad points - the hole for the wiring comes through the rhs of the light fitting, so the body of the light sits slightly to the left.If fitted outside your front door and you need the light to see where the key fits, it's not a problem if you fit a quality, high power LED bulb or your light fitting is to the right of the door, but be aware that the location will be slightly 'left justified' of where a previous light fitting was.Also, the timer and light sensitivity dials are quite hard to read, sitting uinder the PIR as they do. The light sensitivity dial needs to be set well towards the moon, (arrow pointing to about 8 o'clock) to avoid triggering whilst it is still light and the timer dial should be set to around 2 o'clock, to give a sensible on/off time. TIP - set the dials up before you fit the light!None of the 'bad' points detract greatly from what is a brilliant product and so much more sophisticated than many of the rubbish lights on the market. I bought 3 of these lights and I am truly delighted with them.

Lovely light, have bought two now. Took us a bit to work out how to set up but thanks to helpful fellow reviewer on here got it sorted easily!Edit! The second light we bought was sited on a wall that gets the full brunt of the wind and rain and after first big storm of winter the sensor went haywire, water seemed to be inside and triggering it, firstly at random, then it wouldn't come on, then it went on and wouldn't go off! It has an IP44 rating which should mean it's weatherproof so we may just have had a faulty unit but I think the rating may be inadequate too for where we wanted to put it. Amazon were great with a no quibble refund. We changed it for an led one with an IP55 rating which so far seems to be holding up fine.The original Steinel we bought, which is on a sheltered wall, is still doing fine so I still think it's a good product, just be mindful of where you want to position it.

I bought this light after reading a lot of reviews and glad I did buy this one as it's well made and does not seem to be tripped all the time.It has a couple of dials under the sensor (I've got the one with the moon and sun that selects how dark you want it to be for when it comes on in the middle and the one with the clock for the amount of time it comes on for at the lowest).If you have both dials at maximum (they are by default) the light will remain on all the time.

The Steinel packaging was quality so before I opened the box, I knew these were quality light fittings. The PIR is a very high quality part with a good range of adjustment. The unit was very easy to fit and setup, and looks great. There are no parts on these lights that can rust therefore, they should last for many years to come. I would recommend Steinel light fittings to anyone and Amazons service was first class.

This was easy to fit and easy to set up. It comes on immediately the porch door is opened from outside, or we go out of the house into the porch. It does not work through the glass of the porch so no blanking off of the sensor was necessary and the local wildlife can't set it off.

This unit isn't cheap but it is good. It's easy enough to fit. The instructions are straightforward. It looks smart and the adjustments are easy to set - that's the one for day/night and the one to set the length of time to have the light on when it has been sensed.

Excellent light. Arrived well packaged. Robust internal split design lamp holder, decent finish on alloy outer. Easy assembly, no fiddly bits, nothing to rust. There are cheaper but this is a quality product, I bought 2, you get what you pay for.

I was looking for something a bit different and this stood out from the competition. Looks great in place and lets out a lovely subtle light.
