I recently purchased this item to replace an existing Timer and separate Photocell lighting / power control circuit. Whilst the actual device is very compact and relatively easy to connect into a new or existing circuit the Information booklet provided leaves some of the configuration and set up instructions open to speculation e.g. [1]. There are two similar Neutral (N) terminals provided which may/ may not require an external link as no advice is given about whether these are both connected internally. Mine didn't seen to function without an external (N) link. Also there is no advice provided on whether an external override 240VAC connection can be made directly to the switched live terminal (L')- as on my original Photo Cell. In the absence of any circuit diagrams I assumed NOT so to avoid any issues I wired the (L') output to a mini modular 240VAC contactor to fully isolate the device from my existing PIR and Override circuits. This all works fine. [2]. Setting up the unit also has a learning curve - unless you just use the factory settings. Adjusting the twilight setting is fairly straight-forward using the single micro 'button' with a status LED but changing the night economy mode setting using the 'control dial' can give unexpected results - like the OFF time doesn't appear to change from around 22:00hrs to a later time without first resetting the twilight button again. (The device does NOT contain its own internal 24hr clock.) Bearing in mind that any changes involving the twilight button, including first time operation, forces the unit into a dusk to dawn cycle while it determines the respective light levels over time. This means waiting approx. 24 hours with the lighting control circuit switched on ALL night just to see if your changes have worked. This can prove tedious. [3]. The setting for morning hours ON/ OFF also involves use of the same micro button and LED. This may/ may not have an effect on the night economy mode setting - but I'm still experimenting. Overall a very useful device - when configured and set up correctly.

This is one of the few controllers that have an adjustment to set the light level at which the controller switches the load on and off - cheaper models invariably switch on too early in the evening and remain on too late in the morning. This controller allows you to set it to your preferred light level. It also has the options of switching off again late at night to a time of your choosing and also the option of switching back on again in the early morning. Quite a clever piece of engineering; it works out the time based the activation times for switching on in the evening and switching off in the morning. This does, however, mean that adjusting the time for switching off late at night is a bit by trial and error but once set,it has been consistent so far (I have mine set for switching off at about 2300).The one minor criticism I have is the time of switching back on again in the morning is not adjustable and mine comes on too early between about 0300-0400 rather than the 0400-0500 claimed. However, there is a setting to disable it switching back on again in the early morning and I will activate this once it gets lighter in the morning.Of note, the question and answer referring to having to adjust the timer for change between standard and daylight saving should be ignored; this is irrelevant as the way it works out the time is based on times of morning and evening twilight and not clock based and is also why the unit should be left with power on and not switched on and off.

i bought one of these to connect to 2 garden lights lighting a big trellis wall and adjoining path. Set up was easy and we use the twilight setting. Essentially you press and hold a button till the LED light blinks. You do this for evening ambient light for when you want it to come on i.e. wait for the evening sun to go down and then go out before it gets too dark and press the button. Once done it will come on when the evening light gets to the point at which it was set. So in another words it comes later on in the night in the summer and earlier on in winter and is not dependent on a clock. In the twilight setting it goes off at about 1:30am - 2:00am and then it come on for a bit in the early hours of the morning(dark winter mornings)and goes off when it gets brighter. Don't know how the light turns off at 1:30-2:00am without a clock. Perhaps it's just German magic.Non twilight setting means the light comes on when it's dark and goes off when it gets bright.

Fantastic, I previously had a sensor bought from screwfix for £14 but this broke after a few weeks. So far this has been great, the build quality is good, the instructions easy and clear.Have this running two external up and down LED wall lights, i set it to come on when it gets dark (you can even adjust the light level you want it to come on at) after this initial setting it then learns as the light levels/time changes so that it only comes on with the light setting you initially set (Very clever stuff).I also have it set on partial night eco mode, so basically after around 4 hours it turns off, alternatively you can set it to stay on all night or adjust how long you want your lights on for over night. To conclude,if your looking at this and think its expensive, then your right it is and rightly so, because you get what you pay for.Only time will tell as its only been a few weeks, but with a 3 year warranty I am quite happy I paid more to be honest.

Wasn’t sure about buying this based on some of the other reviews, but I’m pleased I did.I have this wired mains side of my pond lights 12v transformer. Test it, and hey pronto, it works brilliantly. There is a small dial inside the unit along with a small push button. They allow you to control how long it stays on for or when it turns on.I wanted my pond lights to come on at dusk, and then switch off in early hours, and not come back on again until the next night. The first night it stayed on all night (learning dusk to dawn I think), but second night turned off in the early hours as I had programmed - and has been in operation without a problem since.Has kept the program I set even after a power cut.All in all,an easy to wire and then use - switch.

Having put up a new extension and front wall, I wanted something that would light up the gate without me having to remember to switch lights on and off. This fits the bill perfectly, has been working for a good six months now and no problems. Comes on automatically at dusk, and goes off by sunrise. You can set the internal timer so that it goes off during the night to conserve power, and you can adjust the brightness levels to trigger the light. i spent a long time looking for something appropriate, having rejected various combined lighting units as either being too expensive or not to my wife's aesthetic taste. This solves the problem - buy whatever lights you like and install this in line.

Be very careful where you put it. Instructions say it can be placed right next to a light as it can distinguish between lamp light and ambient light. We have frosted glass in our porch and if we have our hall light on as it gets dark, it fools the sensor into thinking it's still daylight. Spoke to the technical department at Steinel and they suggested moving it up the outside wall to above the level of our porch guttering. This isn't possible due to new rendering. Other than this annoyance, it seems to work well when the porch light isn't on as it gets dusk. Steinel suggested most are placed up high near the soffit but it doesn't say this in the instructions.

Well constructed and easy to fit. Takes a little while to get used to the operation but manual is clear. The sensor can be set to switch on at a desired light level. It can also be set to switch off after an adjustable period of time using a dial inside the unit (ECO mode). It can also be set to switch on again in the morning if desired. It will still work if it is mounted next to the light it is operating as it measures gradual changes in ambient light levels.Cable entry can be from the rear or the bottom and rubber grommets are provided to provide extra water ingress protection. All fixings are provided and the unit looks neat and discrete on the wall.

I used this item to control security lighting. It's great because previously I had to reset the timer constantly due to the length of day changing with the varying length of daylight in Autumn and Spring. After a break in, I now like to have my security lights on during the periods of darkness. My led lighting, I can illuminate my whole properly uing less than 40 watts of power. My only problem with the device was the wiring arrangement which is a push fit. I had not encountered this previously so it was a bit perplexing at first. I fitted another unit for my daughter and both have functioned without issue for 4 years. Would definitely recommend it.

This unit was bought to replace an older malfunctioning item. Installation was straightforward as it was basically a like-for-like replacement, the only fiddly bit was inserting the wires into the non-screw/spring clip type connectors - I'd prefer to screw them in place. So I was worried that the connections weren't firm when switched on but it worked so obviously that wasn't the case. The unit went through its self-learning to workout the dawn/dusk times and came on automatically in the evening/switched off in the morning. Has been working perfectly for a couple of weeks now. Really pleased with this.

Was looking for a new photocell to switch garden lighting due to the old one chattering on startup and switching too early. This unit has an adjustable lux level for switch on time, the only downside being you set it manually with a push button at the desired light level. The other unique feature is an adjustable off time, so my garden lights go off about midnight. The unit doesn’t have a clock but works out the time of the year by tracking light levels. So far it’s been pretty accurate at turning off.Only time will tell of how reliable it is, but Steinel is well established brand.

We've had it a year now as a dusk till dawn sensor and it works perfectly. Our Electrician installed it but I don't remember any issues. We used it for our lights either side of the front door and it means that they both come on and off in sync and we could tuck the box round the side of the porch on the black fascia below the gutter and you barely even notice it - obviously remember that the sensor itself cannot be covered or it wont work so it will need to be somewhere visible.

This is a very good product and it works fine. I would have preferred if the lights are off sooner in the morning, but again I have not played with the sensitivity sensor inside. I would buy it again.TIP: Please pay attention to one thing ... you must have power going into the switch so that the switch works. The switch is the one that distributes the power to your lights. So if you add it in the middle of your circuit it will not work. This switch does not have batteries.

Arrived quickly. Works exactly as described. Build quality is excellent. It is easy to install (if you can change a plug there should be no problems) and is already set up with good default settings. This was bought to replace an identical item that worked flawlessly through rain, hail, snow and sunshine for 4 years - until a massive power surge fried it (along with over £500 worth of other electrical goodies).I am very happy to recommend this.

I have had one of these working for 5-6 years and I am buying a second for a secong light set. The first is still going strong and has proven to be a great bit of kit, easy install and better than anything else I have seen or tried. The second unit is being purchasd to replace a regular dawn to dusk switch that I bought a few years before the NM3000 because I am fed up wth the lights being on between minight and dawn.
