Excellent value, faultless performance. But any Windows user hoping to use Acronis Drive Image (including the current 2015 version) to clone the drive in their current machine to an SSD attached via this adapter prior to swapping the disks over is in for a disappointment. The reason being that Acronis (whether started up from the Windows disktop or the Acronis recovery CD) boots into a customized version of Linux to do the actual cloning./imaging, and the Linux kernel Acronis has used has no driver support for the chip in this adapter. That's not a failing of Linux. The device plugs and plays under recent versions of Fedora, Centos 7, Ubuntu (and derivatives like Mint Linux)in the same seamless way as it does with Windows. But Acronis simply can't see the adapter or any disk attached to it, so it can't be used to clone from resident disk to new SSD device. That said, the device works fine with the cloning software supplied with Samsung SSD's, and there's other disk cloning software besides Acronis which will do the job just as well. But users of Crucial SSD's will find that the Acronis software Crucial actually recommends to do the cloning (even to the extent of providing a free download of it) won't recognise this adapter or any disk attached to it.That's the consequence of Acronis using an outdated kernel build, and nothing to do with the makers of this adapter, So no affect on the 5-star rating, but anyone who gets one of these and has problems with Acronis shouldn't automatically assume they have a faulty device...EDIT, November 2016 I am glad to report that the 2016 version of Acronis TruEmage now recognises this device. But since both Crucial and Adata are still offering with their SSD devices downloads of Acronis versions which lack the necessary driver, my warning up-top is still relevant...

Being a power user with a big need of storing and restoring data this product is a game changer. The bandwidth saturates SATA 3 with almost a factor two (10Gbps vs 6Gbps), and the overhead with UAS-protocol is so small, I really can't tell the difference plugin in my SSD's internally via the SATA-connectors (over SATA III). Sustained transfer rates is usually well above 350MB/s (!), which let me restore a root partition in less then five minutes (ext4, brfs, ZFS).Backing up data is even more convenient. Although NAS solutions is nice, it's costly and drives fails all the time. Professionally manging a lot of copyrighted materials the 'big'solutions is not always that easy when it comes to security either: You want to automate things and thus want to be able to reach all machines from where ever You are, but it comes with a cost. Data is exposed to network/internet. Hence I prefer to manually sync disks to machines w/o network connection (hardware). With StarTech's drive adaptor (SSD) it's like a breeze. I usually don't write reviews, but this product is by far my best buy 2016 (accessories). There aren't non PCI-E SSD that arn't crippled by the SATA-interface, so it will last for years.Just buy it, You wont find anything better.Read full review...

I bought this when my computer stopped working suddenly (most likely a problem with the battery charging but it was old and not worth fixing. I had all my stuff backed up elsewhere so it didn't matter, except for one file that I hadn't been able to back up before the old laptop pegged it. As I was sure the hard drive was okay (that wasn't the reason the laptop died) I just wanted to get that one file. Did check with a local IT company and their prices were reasonable as it goes, but weren't worth it just to retrieve one file. I bought this instead - took the drive out of the laptop and connected it to this - and it worked really easily.I'm not particularly tech-savvy so if I can use it successfully then most people can.

The usb does exactly what it’s supposed to do. But I’m more impressed by the quality of the material - The wire is extremely thick and should be durable for a very long time, not like the cheap alternatives. Also the SATA end is made of actual hard metal-like material, which surprised me as I expected cheap plastic.Overall a good product, would recommend buying it cus it’ll last for a very long time. As opposed to the cheaper ones that break after a while.

Used to copy my new Alienware laptop which came with a HDD to a 1TB SSD. Worked like a charm when plugged into the USB 3.0 port. There are plenty of freeware copy programs out there that can be used to copy over. Once transfer was complete, pulled out the mechanical HDD and put in the new copied SSD. Now my laptop is a monster without having to pay the ridiculous Dell SSD upgrade fees for Alienware products.

Does what it says on the tin, just make sure what purpose you want it for, as I've only skimmed through the description failing to notice it's meant for SSD and 2.5" HDD (i.e. not the regular desktop internal HDDs which is what I've intended to use it for). Used it at later date to transfer my system disk to newly purchased SSD via Macrium Reflect to which purpose this cable worked without a problem.

This cable is quite tough - the sata conneector is light-weight but sturdy, and the usb cable is good quality .I connect any SATA HDD to my PC with this and enjoy high speed data transfer flawlessly. Can use to boot from a harddisk too - provided the hdd has an OS installed of course - just plugin before power-on and select the removable hdd in the boot menu (but select Legacy boot menu in Bios)

Slightly worried when I ordered this that it might be a bit flimsy and therefore unreliable. But it's a good, solid piece of kit, that does exactly what it's supposed to do.It's incredibly simple to use - just plug it onto the back of the HDD/SSD and the other end into your Mac and off you go. But you should also consider a semi-permanent solution such as the Inateck External Enclosure Case

Compatibility is an odd one but that's just for a particular SSD and using the Intel chipset for USB.Other than that (not that I don't love it) it's pretty basic, it's functionality is there and I couldn't ask more from it. The performance is obviously not full SATA3 6Gbps and not even USB3 5Gbps. But that's to be expected due to overhead etc.So, it's pretty nice and it works! :)

Mint. My girlfriend loved it and told me I was simply the best boyfriend she's ever had. It worked a treat and not only have I now amassed more brownie points than Tony Blair got when he told 'W' the UK would goose-step into Baghdad with him, my girlfriend can now read SATA drives without having to fit them internally. This leaves her more time to pamper her number one man. Win win.

This cable allowed me to clone my laptop drive to a Samsung SSD using the Samsung supplied software. The only tricky part is that it must be used with a USB3.0 port and these can be hard to distinguish from USB2.0 (my laptop has 2xUSB2.0 and 2xUSB3.0 but they are not explicitly marked as such.Cloning took around 20 minutes for ~100Gigabytes of data

I needed to recover data from a trashed hard disk drive so bought this with that aim in mind. Although the HDD was past redemption, the cable adapter worked great and I have since used it to interface other HDDs which could be read with ease using this cable. Good product and surprisingly well made.

Does just what I'd expect: Strap a laptop HDD on one end and plug into a powered USB port and there's your data. Not sure whether it would work for a full size 3.5 inch drives as they may need too much power for USB.If you're a jobbing IT pro, well worth having one of these in the toolbox.

Cable works fine with regards data transfer. One problem for me with a Samsung EVO SSD was that the Samsung Disk Migration software could not detect the drive as being a Samsung one and couldn't perform a cloning operation. Something to do with the chipset used in the cable maybe.

Did the job without any problems. Made copying Windows from an old SSD to a new Samsung one so easy and quick. My old 128GB SSD transferred in less than 15 mins by USB3. You will need software to achieve this and the one with the Samsung SSD was easy to use.
