I was a bit wary of getting this after some pretty mediocre reviews. However I took the plunge and I'm glad I did. I remember being glued to Starfleet Command all those years ago. Tactical Assault is really Starfleet Command simplified, and squeezed onto a DS cartridge.Yes I know, the plot is rather basic and the graphics are boarderline... but let's use our imagination here to fill in the gaps!Without spoiling the story too much, you start off as a Starfleet officer fresh out of training. After a shake down cruise and some initial action to get you used to the mechanics, your flung in the midst of a war between the Federation and the Klingon Empire. After two or three missions you progress in rank and get a heavier ship to command.Depending on your performance you also earn crew upgrade points which you can spend to upgrade things such as weapon damage and energy levels.Although the storyline can be really predicatble at times, it still offers you a certain amount of choice. For instance, in the second mission you are asked by the director of a mining post to destroy some "rebels", you can agree and turn them to dust or you can hail them and ask why they are doing this... consequently you find out that they are working in inhumane conditions and bring their boss to justice after a little "resistance". Reminds me a bit of Bridge Commander in that respect.I've finished the Federation campaign already, and have now unlocked the Klingon campaign. There is a noticeable jump in difficulty here, as the Klingon ships don't recharge their shields so you really do have to think about how to attack without exposing your hull to damage.Would have liked the Fedation campaign to be a bit longer, its 15 missions long which may be enough for most. However considering that some of them are quite short it would have been nice to have say 20 missions per campaign. For those of you who just want to jump into a fight without doing the missions, there is the skirmish mode. Essentially its an instant action mode, you select an area to fight in and the type of adversary you want and let the photons fly.All in all a really enjoyable game so far, especially if your a fan of starfleet command. Admitadtly its a little rough around the edges at times, but for a DS game I think its a very good attempt. There aren't many Trek games out there, so if you like Star Trek I suggest you go for this without a doubt. For those non-trekies, if your looking for something to occupy your time for a few days give it a go... you might even like it!

Star Trek tactical Assault for the DS.First of all, I am not a massive Star Trek fan, I enjoyed the Tv Series and the films but wouldn't consider myself to be what some would call a Trekkie. The reason I say this is because people seem to think that only Star Trek fans play Star Trek games! Well if that is the case then its a shame, as they won't play this great game.Tactical Assault is a space base action game that puts you in command of various Starships and is set after the first Star Trek Series, around the time of the Jim Kirk era during the film Generations. There is two campaign modes, Federation and Klingon plus a highly addictive Skirmish mode. The ships are more modern than the original series but not as advance as those in the next generation and so on.First of all, this game isn't tactical as in a Real Time Strategy game. You control your ship, fire your weapons and hail and so on, yourself. Nothing here is automated. Their is no point and click and move their, you control speed and direction yourself. The tactical element is only in how you plan your attacks andhow you handle a bad situation. Now some people have said this game is too hard, and I can see why they thought that. The hint is in the name, you have to be tactical. If you constantly attack a ship head on your forward sheilds will fail, your hull will get breached and your ship Will blow up. This is why I found the game very interesting. I found I had to employ tactics even fighting smaller ships than myself. The best way to take down an enemy is to concentrate your fire on a particular area on the ships weakening their sheilds, while ensuring their shots hit various parts of your ship spreading out the damage through your own sheilds. It can be hard as your aren't attacking a stationary target, but hey, why should taking down a Kilingon destroyer be easy? Where is the fun in that.Overall the game has good controls, the graphics are ok and look have that feel and look of Star Trek and the sound is very good (Nothing like the alarm when you change from Green to red alert!). The campaign will last you a while, with replay value making it possible to change the outcome of the story! The Skirmish mode is fun and perfect for short journeys. If you are wondering whether or not to buy this game, take the advice of Jean luc Picard 'Make it so!'

I'm very impressed with this game. I read a few so-so reviews on other sites so I was hesitant at first but now I've bought it i'm glad I did.The idea of the game is quite basic; You are a starship captain (either Federation or Klingon) and must fly your ship through space taking part in ship-to-ship space combat. Its great fun! You can either play in two campaigns (One Federation, the other Klingon) in which you pilot your ship through the solar system encountering other alien races and either resolving differences the diplomatic way or blasting them to bits....or there is also a 'skirmish' mode which essentially lets you get straight into the fight in which you can also command Romulan,Orion or Gorn ships of various classes (Destroyer, Frigate, Cruiser etc) the controls are tricky at first but quite easy to use once you get the gist of how the game works. What I particularly like about the game is that it isn't just a typical mindless shoot-em-up like alot of other games. You can actually hail other ships in the area and choose what you wish to say. If you want to try and avoid a fight you can be charming or if you want to fight you can easily say the wrong thing and all hell breaks loose! As the game progresses you can upgrade your current ship or you can unlock new ones. All the classes of ship are accurate with regards to the Star Trek designs which is a big plus for Trekkies out there who own DS's. You cannot just fly into a fight and expect to win hands down you must use tactics and careful planning to win. Not only do you have to hit your enemy accurately to damage them you have to get through their shields first whilst preventing them from damaging your own shields too much.I would say that the game could be improved in a few minor ways. Firstly if the characters that spoke to you had voices....the writing appears on the screen telling you whats being said but there are no voices speaking which I think is a bit naff. Also you cannot name your captain or your ship which would be a nice little addition to the more creative players....Lastly I think there could be more ship classes and alien races featured in the game. A game like this with the Borg, Jem'Hadar or Cardassians would be a must-own game for Star-Trek fans! Perhaps the sequel will feature these....

From past experience I know most Star Trek games can be quite difficult to master, but this one was so good my DS had to be confiscated to make me come off it! The game play is excellent, you can hail or scan ships, change alerts: red, yellow or green, and shoot klingons out of existence! But most interesting is that when you hail a ship, what you choose to say will affect the outcome of a mission. If you are talking to a klingon bird of prey, you don't say "Can't we talk this over?" because the responce you get will be a volley of disrupters! Some missions are easy, others are very hard. However when you finish flying Federation ships, you move on to the klingon part of the game. (Much more fun!)Or if you can't wait, go into skirmish mode and anihilate three federation dreadnoughts, spending half your time cloaked. Anyone who loves strategy games and shoot em up's, should buy this game now!

Whether you're looking for an in depth mission or a bit of shooting to while away a few minutes this is an excellent game, even if you don't like Star Trek, its easy to use, easy to learn and has a little something for everyone!

this game is a lot of fun, and is great value for money, but after a while becomes a bit repetitive, which is not great for long stints, but put it down for a few days and it is easy to get back into. Over all I would recomend

This game works on DS and gives a change to the standard DS games with ship to ship combat and many types of ships allowing 2 campaigns and, so far for me, 3 species to play as in skirmish games.
