I must say I'm rather surprised to see all the negativity being thrown in the direction of this budget title, particularly when it's leaps and bounds ahead of the awful Legacy. What you have here is a hybrid between a lite-strategy and a top down action combat game. You choose one of 6 races, each with their own specific characteristics, special weapons and territory, then attempt to conquer the galaxy. Research can be performed to upgrade the stats of your ship and your fleet admirals can level up as they win battles. Mining installations earn credits which can be spent on constructing 3 classes of ship (destroyer, cruiser, dreadnought). The strategy comes into play in choosing which territories on the galactic map to attack with your limited fleet resources.Generally speaking, static defenses will be overwhelmed by a reasonably sized fleet, so if you go gallavanting off and leave your territory undefended, you can expect to lose it very quickly. The use of special weapons which have a variety of different effects also adds a layer of strategy. The combat is quite similar to Star Trek Encounters, though a little more refined. Consider an arcadey version of Starfleet Command and you'll be pretty close. It's a frantic but reasonably tactical affair that won't blow your socks off, but is none the less enjoyable. It's a little shallow and the production values are strictly budget, featuring mediocre graphics and dubious (but blissfully infrequent) voice-acting. It is however, distinctly Star Trek and not a bad game in and of itself. Just don't go in expecting a Triple A title and you should get a good few hours of enjoyment out of it. I would question the credibility of previous reviewers who have claimed the game has no longevity. There are 6 races in the game and they all play distinctly differently, so I would suggest that the game bears multiple playthroughs, with each taking several hours to complete.

This game is probably underated. The graphics are great for the console and give clear images. The campaign can get slightly predicatable, yet the way to mix up which factions are in the campaign can help to tip the balance in your favour. The Dominion are probably the best faction!I found that sometimes the way to upgrade the bases took time and could be annoying if you are in trouble. The gameplay can eventually get predictable onve you figure out how to easily defeat the enemies makes the game easy. Still a great game!

You can play this purely as a conquest sim (as the battles are disappointing). The sim however is compelling, even tho the concept is simple and the variables are not huge. You defend your homeworld, gain systems for resources and build armadas to go and wipe out opposion, this form of the game shouldn't work so well but does and makes up for the arcade mode.
