I have now played all three Stalker games. The first two I thought were quite bad, verging on utterly worthless in fact. The second one in particular. So this third game came as quite a surprise. The Stalker series started out as a BIG deal to gamers, and got a lot of people very excited. But after budget and publishing problems, it was delayed over and over, and features were cut from the game. They originally wanted us to be able to drive around in vehicles, as well as just running everywhere on foot, but after having to scale back, this was not possible in the end. The game itself though was still fairly ahead of it's time, with a huge area to explore, including vast open outdoor areas, and indoor areas like buildings and tunnels - long before Borderlands and Fallout 3. The AI was brilliant too. The first game had a lot going for it, but after the initial "wow" factor, I just got bored about half way through, the story was tame and went nowhere fast, the gameplay was very cryptic giving you absolutely no direction at all about what to do and where to go and whether you should join the factions or fight them or just completely ignore them. But worst of all, I struggled through to the end of the game and it was such an anti-climatic, painfully boring ending. The second game was even worse. It had a few new features and they tidied things up a bit. The graphics were better and there were some cool new features. It felt much more like a real world, with various factions fighting each other for control of key locations and stuff. Unfortunately it was all just done so badly. It was so buggy, even after 3 or 4 patches it was still barely even playable at all. It was also a bit 'too' free and open and "sandbox-ish", so I just got bored of it all about half way though, only this time, I didn't even bother struggling through to the end.Now here comes the third game, and as you can see by the date of this review, I was in no hurry to buy it. I was actually going to skip it completely because I thought I was finished with this series. However my friend bought it and loved it, so suggested I give it a third and final try. I am really pleasantly surprised! They have FINALLY put together a proper game! Even the first game had it all technically, the graphics, sounds and music are very good, it's extremely immersive, interesting characters, very unique setting for a game, great gunplay, more depth than the typical kid-friendly console-friendly shooter, thanks to the different ammo types, wide array of weapons, and an inventory which you had to manage. And you have to trade things to make cash too, etc. But whereas with the first two games, it was all a bit messy and I found that I couldn't really be bothered doing anything, and all the quests felt like MMORPG style chores, and it was all generally put together so badly... this game is completely different experience. It has all the good stuff like graphics and immersion and setting and moodiness, but it's now really well put together in terms of gameplay too. You get a well made intro movie when the game starts now, which sets everything up for you, explains who you are, where you are, and why you are there. You also now have a bit more of a broad long term goal which is actually something you can appreciate a bit more, it's a bit more realistic, and it's just.... better. At the start of the other games I felt like I was dropped in to some dodgy B movie. At the start of this game, I felt like more like Andy McNab, in a real situation, in a real world, just with a slight science fiction twist. From there it was just pleasant surprise after pleasant surprise. Everything works this time... You chat to people and can accept or decline to help them, and if you accept, it's added to a journal and plotted on your map. So it all works as it should and it's much more solid and playable and enjoyable now. The conversations all work better, the dialogue both spoken and written is very good. The layout of the 'world' is brilliant now, and much less of a chore to navigate around, also thanks to the improvements to the run speed and inventory management. You have a kind of home base where you can regularly unload all your junk which makes you able to sprint very quickly for very long distances without breaking a sweat. The various factions now all go about their own business and there is no more ambiguity about who is friend or foe, and who is a bugged NPC and who is working as intended etc.. The factions now sometimes offer you jobs but it's very clear if it will interfere with another faction and make you an enemy of theirs. The jobs you get are all so much more fun and realistic now. With no real human enemies early on, there is nothing much to shoot, so when you start picking up jobs and they send you off on dangerous missions that involve big gun fights, and dicey situations, it's something you gladly get stuck in to, and so it never feels like a chore now. The missions (and stashes) are all laid out better too, so you don't really need to go to the same location twice, unlike in the last games where you were constantly covering the same boring ground. There are dozens of locations early on, but you just go to them all once and that's that. It's great. It all progresses at a good pace too. It's perfect in fact. It's not so fast that you feel like you are blitzing through the game and it's going to be over too soon, but it's not too slow either, where you can't wait to 'move on'. In this game it all just moves along far more like how I would have designed it.The gunplay is brilliant in this game with top notch AI. It was always good in the other games too, but the negative things kind of cancelled it out. Now, without all those negative things to bog it down, it's just constant pure enjoyment. The weapons all handle well and realistically, and because it's semi roleplaying, it can be hard to hit stuff early on if you aren't careful. More like real life, you have to stand still to hit stuff at distance with an assault rifle. But as you start getting better weapons and doing mass upgrades to them (I literally did 12 or so upgrades to my favourite rifle), it becomes much more pinpoint accurate and you can end up running around while shooting stuff in the face. It's still always tense though because animals lunge at you from a distance and rip you to shreds and they roll around on the floor so they are really hard to hit and really hard to evade too. Humanoids are even better because the AI is just so good. The characters and stories in the game are all pretty good too. It has a certain charm to it that reminds me of old RPG's that I used to like. For a FPS it's pretty cool to have these kinds of mini stories and sagas and characters. The whole game has 'character'.The nearest competition to this is Fallout 3 and Borderlands, and I enjoyed this game more than those games. Borderlands I never liked all that much because it was so repetitive and all a bit of a boneheaded action game in my not so humble opinion. Fallout 3 was brilliant, but it was only the "main quest" that I enjoyed, and that was over very quickly, and then I wasn't vaguely interested in doing all the meaningless side quests which didn't really have any purpose once you had basically completed the game... I always complained that they should have put some of the side quests in to the main quest to make it longer, or make the side quests more of a requirement to gear up and earn cash to help you with the main quest. Well that is exactly what this game does, and I am so happy with that. The only real negative thing I could think of about this game, is that the default difficulty setting was a bit easy for me. I played on "Stalker" which is probably great for the average gamer. I think if you are a very experienced FPS player though, you might prefer to go on one higher, or even two higher if you are super hardcore. The combat was still tough on my setting, but there was quite a regular supply of health kits and bandages from the loot, so I never had any major struggles or humble beginnings which some people might prefer. There are also a lot of humans in this game early on, who have become kind of zombies. So you can kill them fairly easily as they just mope about, and you can get lots of loot from them early on. You won't get very rich from it, but it certainly takes the pressure off when it comes to food and health kits and stuff.Lastly, the graphics. I saw some people talking about how they aren't very good, which probably isn't really fair. First off, the character models are an improvement on the last games so the people in the game and the enemies, all look much better now and up to par with other games. For the environment graphics, it's hard to appreciate them seeing as you are constantly going from muddy swampy areas... to rusty old derelict shipyards, to rusty metal and concrete bunkers and 'facilities' in this Chernobyl wasteland. So there is a mass of browns and greys constantly, with just some bits of green and occasionally a blue sky to liven things up. But if you look at the actual quality of the textures and the lighting in the game, it's up there with the best of them. You can't compare this to games like Crysis, because that is such a small game in terms of playable area. This game has huge open areas to roam around so if looked like Crysis your PC's would explode. Also, with pretty games like that, part of the appeal is how pretty the location is, jungles with tropical beaches and rolling waves are nice to look at. So a tropical jungle is always going to seem nicer than a radioactive derelict sewer... even if technically they are pretty close. But to me grimy location is kind of the whole point of this game. I'm not here for site-seeing, I'm here for moodiness and scariness, and this game achieves that in a big way. There is a full, realistic, real time, day and night cycle with realistic randomised weather conditions. So you can be out in a pretty morning with strong sun and a blue sky and in more rural green areas, it can actually look quite pretty. But then later that day, it starts to rain and then as night time rolls in, it goes completely black. Not 'video game black' where you can still see, in this game it's pitch black where you can't see anything at all. So you have to turn on your flashlight and it makes it so eerie and scary and you have to walk very carefully because you don't know what's going to jump out on you...They have also tidied up a real stealth element to this game. You now have a bar telling you how visible you are, and another bar telling you how much noise you are making. So you can run, walk, and also crouch down and walk very slowly and silently. You have to be careful not to walk through bushes which are noisy. So now you can sneak up on people and shoot them, or go in guns blazing. This becomes more of an issue at night time, when you have to use your flashlight but it will give away your position easily. So you have to plan your attacks now, based on time of day and weather, and you then have to adjust your plan, or just go back at another time.Overall I really enjoyed this game, and I am so glad that the Stalker series has FINALLY reached the kind of standard that it SHOULD have reached with the first game. There is some massive competition coming soon from "Rage" which may just make this game obsolete. But perhaps not, and in the meantime, there is no better FPS to play in my opinion. Everything I hoped to get from the first Stalker game, which didn't quite work out... has now finally arrived, and it was definitely worth the wait. It's everything I love. A quality FPS but with some depth, an inventory, lots of weapons with different ammo types, grenades and rocket launchers, puzzles, characters to meet and talk to, choices to make in conversations, freedom to explore the world and do the missions in your own way, and it's all put together now in a good looking package that all works without bugs constantly interrupting me.I hope you enjoy it as much as me.

Finally completed this game today. This is a 1st person-only shooter, rpg-ish exploration game. You are a Russian army major sent into Pripyat, a city of Chernobyl to find out what`s happened to their helicopters that went in there to investigate the radioactive phenomenon that has started producing weird anomolies and mutants. Pripyat is a real place, evacuated after the Chernobyl atomic station melted down and basically contaminated the place with radiation... The City of Pripyat is a ghost city and the game uses this as its scenario.Perhaps it`s because of this reality why the game itself has a very haunting feel of realism to it. Graphically, the colours are muted and very realistic. You should see the water effects in rain or the sun shining through the trees at dawn, cold but very real feeling.Sounds of the wilderness are also haunting as you explore the area with sounds of distance creatures making you edgy. It can be genuinely scary wandering out at night (I don`t advise it) or searching vacant, dead buildings. There are pockets of Stalker groups who have made the area in and around Pripyat home for various mercenary reasons. You start fully armed and can stop and purchase equipment as needed, make friends, then pop out into the dangerous world. In this, it`s very similar to FallOut 3 or even Oblivion except F3 and Oblivion look so cartoony and unreal compared. It`s a living world too, strange creatures chase eachother as well as you. Some creatures have special mutated abilities such as speed, toughness or vanishing. The animals are not totally dumb as they will soon backup if you demonstrate prowess by killing around 2\3rds of their group.During your wanderings you`ll meet enemy Stalkers which are, in my humble opinion, very good in combat. They`ll use obstacles, buildings to take cover and flush you out with grenades, which are very dangerous. I even had one duel with an AI soldier. I had taken the top floor of a busted building and was shooting at a stalker who kept running and hiding behind boxes in a yard. He came for me up the stairs, but when I shot and missed him he retreated. I saw him out in the courtyard again and prepared a grenade, while I was doing that, he doubled-back and shot me up the stairs! As I collapsed my grenade went off on me, adding insult to injury, but I had to smile. I like it when the AI beats me fair and square. There are also some very nice and tense cut scenes that meld right into the open-endedness of the game, so you almost don`t realise you`re in one until the panoramic view cuts in.Another part of this game is using Detectors to get around weird poltergeist type anomolies that have little artifacts that can make a lot of money if you can get to them without dying. I really could not be bothered with all that artifact scanning business so I spent pretty much 80% of the game playing as a soldier and doing everything the hard way, collecting dropped stuff from other stalkers, waiting for opportunities and scavenging again. This way I managed to get good weapons and stuff. However, I could never get the really good stuff. It wasn`t until I actually decided to start going after artifacts and understood how to use a Detector (basicly it`s a map through anomolies) that my fortunes actually sky-rocketed from around 10000 average to 80000! After that, I was able to get the best exo-skeleton and submg and had the best Sniper rifle on order. Unfortunately, I`d completed about 85% of the game and was well in Pripyat itself. LOL. Maybe on a rerun I`ll try doing things differently, but it was a very immersive experience. It`s interesting to note that instead of getting skills, you simply get better weapons, boosts and armour to help you. Sounds boring, but works well and I see it as a definte contender to the standard adding points to character traits. I would say Pripyat`s way is much more realistic. It also adds `immersive` elements like the need to eat and sleep. They don`t really do anything much and are no hassle (you`ll never run out of food unless you go insane), but adds a nice extra touch of immersion. But you do bleed and you need to bandage that- have it on a quick button and plentiful supply and you`ll have no probs.I almost forgot, the radioactive zone has periodic Emissions: giant blasts of radioactive death that spread all over. when you hear the alarm you MUST find shelter or die. This applies to you and the AI. I`ve seen some friendly AI on the mini radar that didn`t make it. There are often plenty of places to if you run and it`s rare to get caught in the open unless you`re unlucky. I was caught once in the whole game.I would also add that compared to Oblivion or Fallout 3, this game needs a little more mature patience. You can`t just rush to the end without some work. I played on Veteran which was good for me- hard, but just rightly so. You do still pop health kits like them though.Lots of nice Mods. I installed a couple for extra realism, better gun sounds and variety in soldier`s uniforms, but not really that miuch needs to be done to it.No draconian DRM and can be installed Offline! Not much to complain about really.1. The creature AI in Pripyat sometimes seem to forget to act, allowing me to shoot them with little response. Strange, cos they certainly noticed in the two other areas.2.Would be nice to be able to go prone.3. Would be nice to take random support on some wanders around the wilderness.4. where are the females? No, I don`t mean fighter females. I just mean the odd women. You have a small world just full of men living it out. Wouldn`t they have a couple of women around such as the odd girlfriend or even guarded shop keeper- or even a lady of the night. There`s not even a sexy pinup on the wall. It just seems strange for such a grim, lonely world of mercs and no one seems interested in girls!5. Ran fine on my system: Phenom 955, gainward 260. 4 meg ram.Nope can`t think of any more, that`s how good it is.Recommended.

For starters, I commend the developers for including free content such as the soundtrack, map and cards. Although that doesn't particularly seem like much, it's still a nice bonus to a game whereas some other developers would have charged extra.Initially, the game was a huge letdown for me since during the opening sequence; the narrator was giving a recap of the past events to help familiarize the new players to the story. The letdown was that the narrator got the subtitles wrong. For example, the narrator would say something such as "2012, agent Alexander..." where at the same time, the subtitles would say "2011, agent...", this set my expectations to be low for the game. This feeling was exacerbated when the narration suddenly put you in the game with no transition whatsoever, the suspenseful music suddenly stops and you're suddenly in the game. The first sight you see are the aged graphics engine and your first thought is "Photorealistic? Yeah, right".I can happily say though that this is one of those games that are prime examples of good graphics don't make a good game. After an hour playing Call of Pripyat, I was hooked. The atmosphere and immersion factors in the game are unbelievable. A few hours in and a part of you feels like you're really in an apocalyptic wasteland, you know not to travel at night, you keep a close eye on your rations and you naturally become very cautious when travelling. I've always found binoculars in games rather useless and have never used them, in CoP however I find myself getting out my binoculars and scouting a group that's set up camp, to find ways to take them down without being taken down myself.Another good thing about CoP is that there are reasons for exploration, you'll find many secrets hidden around and side quests that feel like they need to be done, given that unlike many other games, money is rather difficult to get. With money, you can purchase new armors, weapons and weapon upgrades. CoP has a very subtle way of immersing you into the games atmosphere, with the rarity of money, you'll find yourself becoming a scavenger, taking weapons to sell off and food to eat.A word of warning though; CoP is very realistic in the since that you don't really feel like the main protagonist, you feel like you're just another character in the game. This effect is given since that there is always a lot going on around you, you'll find friendly groups fending off mutants and others taking camp. There's also emissions in that you need to stop whatever you're doing and find cover immediately, the enemy also reacts the same way to this. You'll find yourself in a huge firefight and the next thing you know you and your enemies are just running for cover, this is more compelling than it sounds. Unlike other games, the world doesn't seem to revolve around you, you're not the strong protagonist who can a few bullets to the face before breaking a sweat, you're a simple human being who with a few shots is pretty much dead. The only complaint I can find is that the audio in the game is awful. The guns sound like they have no real power in them and the voice acting has very little distance. By that I mean you can walk into base and someone will say "Hello Stalker" and you have no idea as to what direction it came from and if you're a distance away from someone, their voice is the same volume as it is when you're next to them. The music of the game is great though.Overall, STALKER is a good game and worth a shot. If you like somewhat realistic games and an adventure, then you'll enjoy STALKER. If you like heavy run and guns games, you'll still enjoy STALKER but expect a short life span.

Call of Pripyat shares none of the frustrations of Clear Sky, it brings back the FUN of the original game, and improves upon it in a multitude of ways. Yes, this is still Stalker, and the game mechanics are similar: open world, shoot blokes, avoid mutants, hunt anomalies etc. But the faction wars are toned down, and you feel like you actually stand a chance from the off. At first you are somewhat fragile, but not stupidly vulnerable. I started venturing out to places and noticed that, like the better-tuned RPGs, there were areas that I could just about tackle, but others for which I'd have to improve myself before I could return to them. Feels just right. There are two weapons slots,in which you can put whatever you like. This was curiously limited in Clear Sky. The main plot arc isn't entirely linear, the first 5 "quests" for it can be tackled in any order. The "world" comprises 3 large, distinct areas that are naturally shaped and do not feel like long corridors. Keep walking in any direction and you'll see one completely different thing after another, a wrecked ship, swamps (very scaled down compared to Clear Sky), chasms, bridges, burned farms, anomalies, plateaus, and buildings.Call of Pripyat is designed to be "open world" immediately. Day and night cycles are still there, and you have a permanent clock in the main hud. Clear Sky got one thing right with artifacts: hard to find. This is still the case, and detectors are required, making for a tricky but compelling challenge whenever you attempt it. Earning money is tough, but a little easier than Clear Sky, and feels about right. Shotguns are no longer nearly-useless, and the new Protecta is a solid, satisfying weapon. Weapon upgrades are present again, but futher tuned, and even more essential. Some of the dread and scares of the original game are present, if not to the same extent. There are a lot of things that, if not frightening, are certainly odd and will put you on edge. There's more "weird" in this game than "scary", put simply. How many FPSs engage your imagination as much as your trigger finger? And I found it absolutely reliable, too. No crashes here, on an Intel-chipset-based PC with Windows 7 64-bit and a Radeon 4650.Niggles:Realistic but frustratingly small carry limit early on.That damned view-bob.Vanilla game could do with more AI spawns.Short, some are saying 20 hours.Could do with more dungeons!Weapons degradation is a more prominent factor than Clear Sky, and if anything happend a tad too "rapidly" for my liking. You'll wish they mapped more of Pripyat (but what's there is fantastic). To conclude:One of the best first-person-shooters crafted from Ukranian soil. A unique, compelling and satisfying experience, and recommended to absolutely everyone. Google for the "SMRTER mod" after you have played the full game, to add more goodies and replayability.

If, when it was released, Shadow of Chernobyl had run without bugs or the need for incessant patching, I would have loved it to tiny bits. As it is, I sort-of loved it. The atmosphere and setting were brilliant, but having the game periodically decide it didn't like me really put my back up and I very nearly never bothered finishing it. I'm glad I did, mind you, but it didn't half irritate me at times getting there.Call of Pripyat is very much more of the same but this time without the random crashing and patching and as such it's a much improved playing experience. So why only four stars? Because this time the Zone feels a bit samey. I've been here before, killed snorks and found anomolies, and I couldn't shake the feeling that I wasn't really seeing anything new. What I really very, very much liked about Call of Pripyat is the way the plotting doesn't fall into any of the standard game tropes. How often have we played FPS' which start as a normal military mission and - totally unexpectedly (yeah, right) - turn into something completely different with boss battles and terrifying conpiracies? Well, in Call of Pripyat you're sent to rescue some helicopter crews, and that's just what you do. You can take your time about it - do side missions, hunt wierd artifacts and engage with the society which has sprung up in the Zone - but your mission remains the same. It might sound odd, but as the end sequence played through I had a huge grin on my face. It's worth playing just for that end sequence. It plays through differently depending on what you did, which side missions you took, which of the friends you make lived and died and so on - in the way that Fallout 3 promised but just didn't deliver. The first time I played, discovering that my failure to complete a fairly dull early side mission ultimately resulted in the deaths of many of my game-friends was enough to prompt me to fire the game up and start again. It's that entertaining and thought-provoking.So...I'd like to give it five stars, but the mutants and artefacts just weren't as terrifyingly unexplained this time around. There are no moments in Call of Pripyat which I found as gripping as the first descent into the Yantar labs in Shadow of Chernobyl, for exmaple. The overall gameplay experience is much better and smoother this time around, and the scripting actually works. I just wish they'd done this well with the first game. If they had, I'd still be playing it.

Because I liked the original STALKER - Shadow of Chernobyl, this is by no means a bad thing. The atmosphere is still there, the gamplay works in almost an identical way (with a few improvements) and thanks to the re worked X-Ray 16 engine (& DX11) the game world itself looks really nice, the character models and the weather effects in particular look excellent. However, in other places such as the weapon models are now looking dated and rough by comparison to newer games, (i think they were carried over from the original game). The main stoy itself isnt anything to shout about (but i dont know how it ends so maybe it gets better later on?) some of the side quests however and excellent and i found myself really drawn into the world of STALKER,one in particular - when you go hunting bloodsuckers with some other stalkers i think is really good. Apart from this i also like the fact that you are not forced to do anything within the game, you can pick and choose what quests to do and the path to take within the quest, or you can simply explore. In terms of bugs I have experienced very few, i can think of only three occations when the game crashed and apart from that it has run really well - unlike the first game which ate huge amounts of memory.A new gameplay feature i do like though is the weapon customisation - there are large amounts of pistols, shotguns, SMG's and assult rifles to choose from, adn they can be upgraded as you progross - meaning that even basic weapons can be made to pack a real punch (some ammon types can be hard to find) I found myself sticking with the AK-47 for a very long time before really being able to or needing to change it for a better model.I cant comment on the Multiplayer aspect of the game as i haven't really looked into it, however if you have played other games in the STALKER series and enjoyed them then i would reccommend this and if your new to the series give it a try; it makes a refeshing change from the one-man-army games like CoD-MW2. Its slower paced action might not suit some, but i think its definately worth a look.

(I reviewed this game before, when there was only the russian version of the game)I also have an Ukrainian version of this game with a translation patch to English. It only translates subtitles and a lot of the plot is verbally spoken, so I know I'm missing on that department. The game itself is a great leap from Clear Skies. I'm running CoP on maximum settings and the game is smooth and stable. This was something impossible with CS which, even on medium settings, would push my nvidea 8800gt card into overheating, crashing my system. The missions and feel of the game are great, with a very big open space to explore and there are fewer encounters than on the other 2 games. This adds to feeling of being alone on the wilderness. You can also opt to join with other stalkers and travel together. Contrary to CS there are a lot of underground places to explore. There are only 3 maps, although each one seems to be bigger than any sub-map on Shadow of Chernobil or CS. I've been playing this for a week now and I haven't got to the third map (Pripyat), so I can't say anything about that. I'm concentrating on side-quests because the game prepares you to think on Pripyat as a tough challenge and on building a small squad to go with you. There are a few new mutants (I've only seen two so far but I think there's a third) and I think the guns are all the same you already know. All in all I still like SoC better but this comes very close to what I've experienced with that game. Also, CoP adds to my anticipation of a proper Stalker 2, with bigger maps and longer gameplay. If you liked SoC get this game, you'll like it too. I got a copy from Germany but I'll be buying the proper English version now. It's that good!---- Update----Bad news: Pripyat is a great map but there isn't much happening there and that's a real shame. A lot more missions on the other two maps.Good news: The game is really good. I've replayed it as soon as I've completed it the first time. They really learned a lot from their mistakes on CS and it shows. Bring fourth the forth instalment!

Played on Windows Vista 64 bit.Coming from having played the original S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, i didnt play, Clear sky. This version of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R game Call of Pripyat, is what i think the first game should had been like. The graphics and look of the zone is much better, and the setup, stalker bases on old washed up Oil tankers(similar to Fallout 3's aircrat carrier city) just seem to make the game better. I actually fear the mutants in this version of the game, they scare the hell outta me, especially in the more remote spooky caves or abaondoned buildings.I have played half a dozen hours so far, and the feel of the game is still Pretty much the same as the original Shadow of Chernobyl, the weapons and armor etc are pretty much the same, but it does feel allot better this time around. I love the random "Emission" that pops up, which is basically like a blast/storm of radiation(i guess), where if you are out in the zone, you will get a warning on your PDA of an Emission coming, and you have to find shelter ASAP or die, great addition. They have also added an optional quick travel option, where you can talk to other stalkers, and some offer the service, for a price, to take you to a certain place on the map. then when you choose a place and agree, the screen goes black & voila you are there. probabley mot an option you will use all the time, and like i said its optional, so nothing major, but a nice option to have none the less. there are also allot of missions here, 70+ side missions stated on the box, and thus far i have always had something to do, or just roam freely at my own pace.Overall, this survival horror(i guess we can call it to some extent) is of a higher standard than the origonal, and although it is made up of the same elements, it just feels & plays allot better this time around. If you like/enjoy games such as Fallout 3, dead space or Resident Evil, you will enjoy this game.

I haven't played previous Stalkers before. The start of the game manages to create a world that only the greatest games can accomplish. The unfamiliar landscapes. predators, rivals, weather, lack of daylight, anomalies and lack of vital resources all make for a dangerous world where every step can lead to a fatal encounter. The odds can feel stacked against you and the need to work out a way to survive is an incredible driving force. In battles you witness some fantastic random encounters as well as strongly designed set pieces. The sense of achievement when you can confidently stride across the hills and through the swamps is great.Unfortunately that is when things take a turn for the worst. After you have spent time confidently walking across a map and the world is no longer unfamiliar, you are left with quite a dull, poor shooter with an annoying inventory. The game doesn't manage to hold its qualities till the end of each area.Graphically a mixed bag. Some of the textures, buildings, lighting and weather create a very advanced look. Not always. Walking through the landscape can also look a bit naff.Artifacts can be both very useful and a waste of time. With an artifact that removes radiation, the right suits and one of the better detectors, finding artifacts can be quick and useful. Without those items it can be slow and only really useful for money. I was never convinced that getting a suit suitable for battles and only picking up artifacts when it became convenient was a bad idea. I would have liked a clearer need and more direction in artifact collection.Call Of Pripyat is certainly a game worth experiencing but it doesn't manage to sustain its achievements throughout.

Call of Pripyat is almost as good as the first in the series, Shadow of Chernobyl. There's three huge levels to explore. Levels are nicely done except last one, which feels a bit unfinished. All the characters and monsters are nicely done too. The game has quite a bad stuttering problem however. Stuttering is a feature of the game engine and can not be fixed. You can alleviate this somewhat by enabling vertical sync and rising the refresh rate of your monitor as high as possible. Also when you run the game, check that the game is using two cores (or more), for it is known to use just one core by default. This fix can be performed on the Windows Task Manager / Processes tab /right click and change "affinity" to one core, then back to two or more cores. This will activate all cores and you can get 50% more framerate! As to the game itself, it is much of the same as the other Stalker games. Exploring places and doing missions. It can be boring if you're not into wandering. The game world does feel a bit empty and liveless like all Stalker games do. Not much happens or moves and what does feels scripted. There's no real-world lively feeling into it. Anyway, the game lasts about 30-40 hours and there's plenty of interesting and scary places to visit during that time. In Stalker games you need to add a bit of your own imagination on top of it and just enjoy the scenery. It's a trip to your on mind too. Btw, using your own background music while playing is worth trying.

Stalker COP is the 3rd game of the series and like the others is set in the wastelands of chernobyl. I original resisted getting this due to the problems I encountered with clear sky(bugs and lots of patches) but seeing this game for £2, risk free purchase me thinks. So what did I think, the game is very stable but is quite a hit on your pc. The story is a bit hogwash with no mystery like the first one, but their is still alot to find in the open world with some interesting side quests. The combat and the AI are spot on, enemies are very dangerous and often you will find yourself at a disadvantage. I got halfway through the game then got looking for some mods to make it harder(some people will find it hard enough with vanilla). So dont worry their is a community still bashing away with this game. All in all I was satisfied with he end game and of course the deadly atmosphere which when playing by yourself in a dark room..................mummy?. But yeah to new guys to stalker its definitly a try to get this game but also check out the first one, even tho its now a golden oldie its still the best by far.By the way if you like it rough, hard and dirty I recommend you check out the misery mod. I got this to make the game alot harder and boy until you learn the ropes you will spend more time looking at the 'YOUR DEAD' screen then you will running away from everything. (very high end pc needed to play misery on high settings)

In my opinion a much better game than STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl [SSOC] in so far as in the latter many of the tasks involve killing someone although there are some buttons to press of course. However in STALKER Call of Pripyat [SCOP] diplomacy can be used, there are certificates to be gained for various achievements eg friend of stalkers, diplomat etc. Artifacts are found by detector but there are various types of detector and some artifacts allow more weight to be carried which helps with a 50kg limit. There are more mutants which react in different ways but these do not have parts that can sold as in SSOC. All people in the zone ie stalkers, bandits and mercenaries are friendly most of the time so it isn't a continual battle. There is plenty of scope to roam but I have found that sometimes if I try to get back from one area to another [The game takes place in three zones which one gets to using guides as in STALKER Clear Sky] the system crashes; so there appears to be a bit of linearity to it. Having said that, I use a 'Trainer' and probably that affects the travel as the system didn't crash when I travelled with the Trainer not used. There is a good plot running through and the program seems to have been well-tested. So it is in my opinion a worth successor to SSOC; no liability accepted for this review as it is only my opinion.

ASUS P5N32, Intel Core2 [email protected], Gainword_GF_285GTX, 3GB RAM, WinXP SP3, SONY BRAVIA 26" 1360x768 :-)The game installs and runs without major issues (some freezes but not crashes while running in large open areas, maybe my pc is a bit old). Graphics are good similar to the previous STALKER games, no significant improvements tho. Story and characters are interesting - makes you want to immerse deeper into the zone investigate, gather stuff and improve your character. It consists of 3 large maps where u can move freely, lots of side missions but u can only move from one map to another via guides (that cost you some money). The third map Pripyat witch i expected to be large interesting with difficult missions is quite the opposite. Its a major disappointment when you have bought an exoskeleton, upgraded your weapons, gathered lots of ammo in the first two maps and finally decide to move to Pripyat locked and loaded ready to rock and roll and all you get is a few similar missions, easy targets and a mediocre finale-evacuation. Other than that its a decent RPS game and if you are a fan of the Stalker series its definitely worth buying to support the developers. Hopefully the next one will be a more Falloutlike episode. Enjoy!

This is a game that take a bit of time to get into. After playing it for a few hours I was about to give up; but after installing the latest graphic drivers, I noticed an improvement, (Why didnt it work nicely with 6 month old drivers? I duno).Currently the graphics don't look as good as complete 2009 mod for the original stalker and seem to be a bit jumpy from time to time. The weapon sounds are very poor and are nowhere loud enough, as it sounds like a popgun. Needs more of an ear ringing sound. The story seems ok, I think there should be a better mechanizm to ease gamers in as you are just dropped in and expected to wander around.Only after a few hours of gameplay do you have a feeling of focus and story.Update after finishing it twice:I still get lots of flashing and interface rendering problems, so it does need a patch. But in all the gameplay is great, enjoy the first 2 maps the most as like previous stalkers, this one too funnels you into a very linear final level (Pripyat - the most boring map of the 3).

Tried the previous game of the same title (Shadow of Chernobyl) and I think this version (Call of Pripyat) is better. One thing though, if your machine is not up to playing it then don't bother because it I feel is very resource hungry, there is so much goin on in the game and the scenery is very demanding. The game is I feel improved in that it has far more for the player to do and now there is included an option to buy items.Playing this game though is a demand on patience, you will die a lot before you get the hang of playing but it is worth it because the game gets better, if I am to be critical I would say that the weapons are not very reliable or initially accurate, this will get better as you earn upgrades and better more powerful weapons. In all I would say that the game is interesting and it will keep you on the edge of your seat the whole time you are playing it, add to that the very atmospheric sounds and scenery. In all a good game for the PC because we are not at the moment inundated with quality games.
