How come I have never heard of these before?I am so glad I chose these, my 3 year old absolutely loves them. We have a box of wax crayons that just seemed to get snapped in two as soon as she gets her hands on them, but there was no chance of that happening with these Woody pencils.In the box there are ten different coloured pencils - red, orange, yellow, light green, dark green, light blue, dark blue, brown, black and a pink - this should be enough to keep most young artists happy. (Though I've seen that there is also a wallet of 18 colours - I think that's a box that's going to end up in someone's Christmas bag). There is so much to like about these.The barrel of the pencil is nice and chunky so my little one has no trouble holding it. It feels incredibly robust so there's almost no chance she's going to snap it in half. While the leads are nice and thick (10mm), you can use the edges of them to get fine lines, and use the chubby tips to lay down large blocks of colours quickly. The colours are vibrant and intense, so even if your little one is only scribbling, it looks pretty.You do need a special sharpener because they are so large - but one comes in the box, which is good as it's quite expensive to buy separately. I removed this because I don't let my daughter sharpen her own pencils and because the pencils are so large it does mean that a young child could put their finger inside the sharpener (please see the review on the 18 pencil wallet set (1 star) by Rosepetal50)They are called three in one because you can use them as a colouring pencil, a wax crayon or as a watercolour (the pigment is water soluble so you can use a brush to create paintings). You can also use them on glass and they will wipe off (I'm not letting my daughter do this at the moment because I try to keep her away from our large patio window). It should be noted that they are recommended for 3 years and up (from the product page).Only a couple of niggles (apart from the sharpener) - they can be a little messy, my daughter does seem to end up with pigment on her hands and on her socks (for some reason), but this comes off without any problems. Yes they are a bit expensive, but she's been using them every day since she's had them - made loads of drawings - and as of yet I haven't had to sharpen them. So I think they are very good value. I wish I had known about them before I bought that large box of (snapped) wax crayons.

I first discovered these pencils some years ago and they immediately became a staple in my children's art workshops. The price may look steep at 17.50 for ten pencils plus a sharpener, but this is definitely a case of "you get what you pay for" and these are well worth every penny. What makes them so special? Well, for a start they are super chunky. This means even the most rambunctious youngster is actually unable, except perhaps in the case of a freak accident, to do them any harm. It also means they are easy for little fingers to grip, and even have a subtle texture to encourage the proper grip for the youngest children. It also means the "lead" is equally chunky so despite their stubby length,they last for ages (seriously, my first lot are still going strong despite being used by up to 50 children a week for at least 6 months).Apart from their practical size and shape is the way they work. Unlike normal coloured pencils, these have a soft, almost creamy texture with loads of pigment. So children can create strong, bold lines with minimal pressure. The tips are probably not suited to the finest work, but they make up for this by being wonderful for covering large areas with brilliant colour relatively quickly. On paper, the colours appear more like crayon than pencil, but are better for more detailed work. I also find older children are often hesitant to use crayons because they are seen as too childish, whereas they all loved using these.On top of that, these have a couple of fantastic "superpowers". The first is that they are water soluble. So if you (or your child) feel like experimenting, all you need is a wet brush to allow you to blend and move colours and achieve a painterly effect. And this technique means these pencils are far less messy than paints. And if that's not enough, these also work on glass (and presumably other non-porous surfaces) to provide a grease paint-like effect which can be washed off easily.They are brilliant for adults as well, being more portable than paints and offering a wide range of effects with minimal effort and equipment!Honestly, I cannot think of another product that offers comparable value for money if you have a budding artist, these are perfect for all sorts of artistic expression and creative exploration. Probably the number one item in my teaching toolbox, and a valued item in my artistic arsenal as well!

I run a very popular afterschool art club and work with up to 60 children each week. We rarely use paints due to the additional time it takes to set up painting materials and clean up afterwards, not to mention the potential damage to the classroom and children's clothing! We've occasionally used watercolour pencils but the cheap ones are useless and the expensive ones are poor value for money. These Stabilo pencils have solved all these problems once and for all. Yes, they are pricey, but they are too chunky to break and the colours are incredibly vivid so a little goes a long way. It's a joy to see the children's faces when I demonstrate how they work - it's like magic!My budget is too tight to buy multiple sets of these, but we have perhaps 30 in all and they have been used for about half a dozen lessons (60 kids each lesson!) over the last few months and they are still going (though obviously much shorter). Most of the kids prefer using them to poster paint and the colours are gorgeously bright whether they are used with water or not. Set up is a breeze - just a pot of pencils and paper on each table, then when they are finished drawing I give them a cup of water and a paintbrush. The water gets less saturated than with poster paints too, so they aren't constantly needing a fresh cup. They dry quickly, so no need to leave pictures overnight to dry, and cleanup is a breeze - just empty cups and a quick rinse of the brushes! And if the children don't have time to finish their pictures, they can always do the "painting" bit at home as they don't need any special materials, just water and a brush. Honestly, these are probably the best materials I have ever invested in, and I wouldn't hesitate to purchase again in future. They would also make the ideal gift for arty children, and would last a very long time when not being used by 60 of them!!

This set of STABILO Woody 3-in-1 Multi-Talented Pencils comes with 10 different colours and a large "safety" sharpener. The pencils are a good chunky size, around 1.5cm in diameter, making them easy for small and larger hands to grip. They also have thick "tips" that when used give the appearance of crayons, rather than the look of standard colouring pencils. The pencils have a good selection of bright orange, yellow, red, greens and blues as well as 1 black and a "peachy" kind of skin tone. The wood of the pencils is thick, meaning that unlike the crayons I feel they are designed to replace they won't snap or break easily. The coverage is vibrant and thick.They work well on all kinds of paper and card as well as glass or Perspex sheets. They can be used with a little water for "painting" without as all of the mess associated with it. Although I would never let a child loose with the sharpener that comes in the set, the sharpener has built in safety feature to stop small fingers getting cut either on the top or inside the sharpener itself. Now I wouldn't say it's 100% foolproof but the design is well thought out and pretty effective. The pencil's are also non toxic as you would naturally expect and water soluble just in case the budding Picasso decides to go off canvas with them.Overall I really like these pencils as does my young nephew. They are great quality durable and easy to use. I only mark them down to 4 stars as the price seems pretty high. I guess that these pencils should last a very long time and the saving on broken tiny unusable crayons and paint pots should be see a good saving. Great product.

These are a bit different... first off, they're way bigger than a regular pencil with a very, very thick lead; so much so that it's practically unbreakable. They're very chunky- perfect for a toddler's grasp. Second, they're technically pencils but they behave like wax crayons and they can achieve a much higher degree of colour intensity and way better coverage than regular pencils or crayons. My daughter (age 3) definitely enjoyed the fact that she could colour in with more speed, less effort and better results than normal. Third, and for me their USP... you can use these to draw on glass, really easily and with great results and it just wipes off with a damp cloth easily...this was brilliant for us since we have big sliding glass patio doors so I could let the kids go freestyle. We've previously spent £££ on glass pens for this and these are much easier to clean and make better marks. You can, additionally, brush water over the marks made with these pens to create a watercolour effect. All of this is brilliant and yet something of a MIXED BLESSING in one respect: because they're so pigmented they're also messier than regular pencils/crayons. One of the main reasons I prefer pencils to felt tips is the mess factor, but after ten mins with these my daughter had marked the furniture and her hands and face were covered! It all cleaned off but this wouldn't have been an issue with 'regular' pencils... a pretty small con far outweighed by some big pros but maybe worth bearing in mind if you're precious about that sort of thing.

So, having a young kid tends to have you using their materials to draw pictures for them with. For me it has been a bit of a shock to see to what point so many of them don’t work very well. Did crayons really used to be that bad when I was little? If you don’t push down really hard a lot of them don’t leave much of a mark. Likewise for kid’s pencils, chalks, all sorts.I figured this must be a little frustrating and off-putting. Why learn to use pencil when the outcome is so disappointing?These Stabilo pencils seemed to offer a solution – big and thick and promising rich, vibrant lines. The good thing is that they deliver. You still need a little pressure,but you get so much more than a wimpy little line you need to look a from the right lighting angle to see.They won’t teach precision, but they can start you on the road to holding the pencil properly. My son has picked them up in a writing hold more naturally than he does with thinner pencils. He also appeared to be attempting to draw more precise forms compared to his normal scribbles and dots, perhaps aided by the think, highly visible lines.We haven’t tried out the 3-in-1 aspect of the Woodies yet, it is too early for water colouring. But a wet finger will smudge the lines and you can play with those effects. There’s a good selection of colours, including a skin-tone from drawing mummy and daddy and friends, plus the obligatory sharpener for these oversized pencils.A great little addition to your little one’s art and craft supplies.

These are much chunkier than any toddler mark making tools I've used before but are easy to hold and use with their non slip grip wood pencil like outer. They are round rather than the often found triangular grip but this means you can sharpen them with the oversized sharpener included.I did balk at the cost of this set but I think these crayons that look like pencils and are as strong a colour as felt tips are worth it. The drawing you can do with them is strong and colourful - much brighter than colouring pencils and you can even draw on glass and plastic with the mess easily removed with something like a baby wipe. Like crayon though it doesn't mark fabric well so greater protection for things like your carpet and sofa.I have tried scribbling on my brown fabric sofa and the brighter colours like red did make a line but it only took a baby wipe to remove compared to lots of scrubbing needed with crayola washable markers.You get that soft flowing feel crayon feeling in use - like silk crayons rather than the scratchy normal pencil feel.I will buy these over normal pencils again for my toddlers. 4+ will probably prefer more grown up looking pencils as these definitely look like toddler ones.Update 25/10/16 still love these and I've gone on to purchase the pack of 18 which is even better as you get a black plastic storage tray plus a paintbrush and sharpener in fitted sections. Crayons are a great standard for young kids, they are fun to play with and colouring in is a great way to spend some of a wet day in, or for an aritistic child any of the time. The 'Stabilo 3-1 Pencils' are not just crayons, but also paints and can be used for a window display. Most children will use them for the standard colouring in and here they are excellent. The pencils are super chunky so ideal for small hands to hold and they go onto paper brilliantly. This pack of ten comes with most of the standard colours, but also a handy child friendly sharpener. Because the lead is a little more crayon like, it is softer and can be squished a little,but it does mean that even the smallest child can apply enough pressure to make a mark.What makes these champin stand out even further is that a more adventurous child can go a step further. The lead is water based so you can add a little more liquid to make a sort of my first water colour painting. This works surprisingly well, not as good as paints, but as a simple alternative it is good. Finally, you can use them on glass and the water based nature of them means you can wipe up afterwards. This is a high quality set of pencils (I still see them as fancy crayons in wooded coats) that may be a little prices for someone whose children throw their stuff against the wall. However, if your children love arts and crafts, these pencils will be a great gift for them.

I Bought the 5 pack of these with my eldest and was instantly impressed by them, I had wanted to buy a bigger pack with more colours but hadn't wanted duplicates so when I saw Amazon were now selling these I jumped at the chance to review these. My old ones have lasted 3 years so far and are still a favourite - I just LOVE these and have recommended to all mummies I know!The colours are so vibrant and the leads so soft that even children who don't yet apply much pressure will get good mark making with these. The barrel of the pencil is really nice to grip in the youngest hands as they are so chunky. The leads have never broken despite being banged, bitten and coloured with.The pens really do wipe clean off glass and work as water soluble colours too (so just be a bit careful if your little one is still at the sucking everything phase). This is a really lovely range of colours, maybe just missing a purple but plenty for first artists to get creative with. The 5 pack I had didn't have a sharpener which was an issue as they are much wider than standard crayons - this pack has a lovely sharpener which is perfectly sized. I know they are expensive but they are so worth it! I might even be tempted to go for the 18 pack which is only around £5 more!

A friend of ours bought us a set of these "pencils" for our two year old son and we were so impressed that we went out and bought a larger rainbow of colours.These are a beautiful, chunky cross between a pencil and a crayon (the outer sheath is wooden with stripes indicating the colour of the pencil but the "lead" is very soft like a crayon).The colours are vibrant and varied and transfer very well to paper, my son has not problems at all holding and drawing with them and loves to sit down at the dining room table with me and tear a big strip of paper off the roll we have and draw trains, aeroplanes, the family, letters and birthday cakes with candles with me.They are water soluble and wipe easily off our laminated wooden coffee table too,I am quite a strict parent so we've not had a chance to test how well they come off walls, carpets or furniture yet.It is worth investing in the sharpener for the pencils (they have a large diameter than a standard pencil) which does a great job of keeping them ready to go.I would not hesitate to recommend these pencils for children, try one of the smaller packs first to make sure you agree with me but I am pretty sure you'll extend your collection after seeing how well made they are.

Having twin 2 year old boisterous boys that have started being allowed to colour & draw at nursery, we have had to obtain drawing implements & so the chance to review something of this level ( which I wouldn't normally consider purchasing at £17 ) was much appreciated.10 very versatile coloured pencils, with the ability to draw on a multitude of surfaces such as paper, glass, ceramic & card as well as the ability to use with water for a paint effect makes their 3 in 1 claim spot on. Note that they are water soluble so accidental drawing on hard floors, tables etc makes for easy cleaning but we haven't had any wall drawing yet !Easy to hold,pick up & sharpen owing to the included special safety sharpener our boys were hands on and "drawing" as soon as they were out of the box.I have a feeling these will go on for quite a while, unlike the thin brittle pencils / cheap crayons that nursery are using - and what is more, despite the fairly high price tag they could well be replaced with more of the same.

Wonderful vibrant colours that mark the paper nice and easily even in the hand of a baby or toddler (none of this scribbling away hard just to leave a faint pastel-y line behind).The water-soluble aspect is lovely too - we've even produced some interesting artwork by rubbing babywipes across pictures (so long as you didn't use black or it's just a big grey smear).However, the water-solubility also means an almighty mess if one gets put in a mouth for even half a second. They also colour skin in alarmingly well. My toddler is currently in the bath with a yellow face, and I've just finished trying to wipe blue off the baby's teeth and tongue. This doesn't happen with regular pencils!The necessary giant sharpener is a rip-off,but maybe you can get cheaper, non-branded alternatives. I didn't look - we needed it asap as the pencils do wear down rather quickly.All-in-all a great set of pencils to have, but too pricey to be used every day if your children are big drawers.

I had never seen these before until I was offered the chance to review them and I was so glad I was as they are fantastic.My son has a few issues around motor skills and so far results using a variety of crayons and chunky chalks have produced a few mixed results. Concerned he needs to start practising holding pens/pencils these fit the bill nicely.They are indeed very chunky and easy to grip. They produce great results on paper and they have been fun with water. They are soo chunky I'm confident they will take much more abuse than a crayon and certainly look and feel like they will last a long time. They write and glass which I tried away form my son as I don't want to come home one day to find toddler art where it shouldn't be.You get a handy sharpener too.These really are superb. And despite the high price I would recommend them to friends and I would definitely buy them now I know about them.
