These are wonderful pencils, capable of producing vivid colour and instant texture, but the trick is to use them on the right surface. They have a fine, powdery, chalky consistency, full of pigment. They may be sharpened like ordinary pencils, but I generally pare back the wood to expose a length of pastel, which gives a much better range of shading possibilities.I often use these for portrait sketching, for which they are perfect. The trick is to use them on the right paper. They are terrible on cartridge paper, or any kind of smooth paper. This may explain why some reviewers have reported them being "scratchy", and of having to press hard. I would suggest using these pencils on thick,

These pencils are just what I was looking for. Got the advice to buy these from videos by wildlife artist Jason Morgan from YouTube - he’s always the best resource to go to for pastel art advice.They’re not without a couple teething issues - like sharpening is tricky if you like longer points you need to use a razor or sanding block since the sharpener supplied sharpens stubby points and the crank sharpeners I have break them easily. All workaround-able though.Colours are vibrant and the pastel is very easy to smudge and blend - I’d say these are the best I’ve tried and I’ve tried most popular brands.Plenty of browns and greys - fantastic as usually most sets give you very few leaving you struggling.

This is a really beautiful set of fine art chalk pencils from Stabilo in a selection of 12 pastel colours and shades (many more colours are available). My set arrived well packed inside an attractive metal tin and I am pleased to say that the lead 'points' were intact and none of them were broken.A good spectrum of colours are included from darks to lights and warm colours to cool colours. Each pencil is painted the colour of the pencil. They look to be the size of a normal pencil and measures 17.5cm in length.As a colouring pencil these pencils are very good quality and I have enjoyed using them to colour some pictures from colouring books as in the form of Art Therapy.

These chalk pastel pencils are ideal for art enthusiasts looking to explore a different medium or add concentrated detail not easy to achieve with traditional pressed chalk pastels. The range of colours is a little heavy on the red-orange-yellow and blues which makes a change as usually there's about 20 greens and one of each other colour in other media sets.The colours are lovely and soft to colour but firm enough not to crumble the entire tip at the first stroke, they are softer than the pressed sticks we use with my daughters which is lovely to not hear the squeak from too much pressure to get coverage!!If you use watercolours these add a different dimension of texture when adding water as

A good selection of colours in this set and the pencil sharpener is a boon. It seems like the wood protecting the pastel is very strong/firm (great for protection) , and without a dedicated pencil sharpener they are difficult to obtain the sharp point needed for fine details. The sharpener is quite expensive sold individually. However, I have a good mains electric sharpener (Jakar) that does an excellent job - one or the other seems essential with this brand. The performance of these pastel pencils is very good with nice blending and overlay as the pigments on the majority of colours is strong. Very nice pastel pencil with a lovely smooth core.Pastel pencils are in a general sense hard pastels. They are harder than Conte Carres pastel sticks and much harder than soft pastel sticks such as Unison. Having said that they still have a nice velvety stroke and are good for fine detail in your pastel paintings. I use them together with other pastel pencil brands like Faber Castell Pitt pastels which are slightly harder than Stabilo, and Caran d'Ache which are smoother than Stabilo (and more expensive).There are a number of colours in the Stabilo range that are in neither ot the Faber Castell or Caran d'Ache sets.Great value for money and only bettered in quality by the top of the range Caran

Stabilo CarbOthello chalk-pastel colouring pencils come as a tin of 12 high quality pencils in pretty, intense colours.My daugher use chalk pastels on daily basis… not only for drawing but also as an colouring tool for her miniatures. She scrapes and mixes chalk pastels powder with liquid modeling clay to use as a glaze. She uses also powdered chalk pastels for colouring fimo before glazing it.With those chalk pastel colouring pencils she can be much more precise when colouring her miniatures and she won’t have to scrape them and then use the brush, instead she can directly use chalk pastel pencils on her fired modeling clay creations.According to the note on the packaging those chalk pastel pencils are “aquarellable”… meaning,

These pastel pencils are lovely to use, they blend well but also sharpen nicely for more detailed work. There is a good range of colours too. I find it easy to move the top layer across into the lid for setting up, and it's helpful to have the extras without having to buy them separately.On the downside, Stabilo could greatly improve the packaging by adding 2 sheets of protective foam, one above each layer. This would ensure no movement of the product during postage. It may be fine if you buy from an art shop, but mine arrived having moved around inside the tin. I don't think any of them are broken inside, but I haven't had to sharpen them enough to really judge. I had some spare thin foam which I cut to size,

The CarbOthello (weird name) pencils are essentially chalk/pastels in pencil form. Unlike pastel sticks they allow you to create detailed lines and without getting residue all over your fingers (and therefore the paper as well). Like pastels they are soft and quite fragile though, so when you need to sharpen them you need to be as careful as you would be with waxy colour pencils.This set of 12 includes black, white and 10 vibrant colours. There are 4 blues though and only one green so landscape artists may be a little disappointed. They cover quite well given the pencil size tip, but are best used for details alongside pastels for broader coverage.

These are a good quality set of pastel pencils. I had a very similar style of these nearly 30 years ago for A-level art and they served me well so was delighted to update my artist's inventory and introduce these to my children.The pencils are of a good quality and give an excellent chalk based effect- they are not like an oil pastel but more like chalk. You can get a good clear line with them or use them to create a more smudged effect. The pack is good value and allows you to decide whether they are for you before investing in a larger pack. These are great for artists/students, and even younger children can enjoy using them sensibly.

This smaller set of 12 coloured chalk pencils are ideal for art where a more chalky effect is required but without the mess of using actual chalks.The pencils feel in the hand like normal colouring pencils and are comfortable to handle but there is certainly a difference in the way that they draw and the fact that they are a lot softer than a standard pencil.While these are not the best you can buy, there are far better companies out there for providing top quality art pencils for those really serious about the subject, these will appeal to the budding artist or children who want to get into art without paying through the nose for the tools to do so.This Stabilo set is well priced and the tin

These are fantastic. I've desperately been looking for pastel pencils that you can sharpen quickly and easily (ie:with a pencil sharpener) and these are them! I love doing pictures with pastels and need fine points for detailed work but have been getting more and more put off by the laborious task of sharpening with a knife and sandpaper.The set comes with a sharpener, I've now done two pictures that I'm happy with so I've done a fair bit of sharpening. The odd one breaks of course but after using the sharpener a few times I found I now have a feel for it and have got the knack of sharpening to a fine point.Apart from all that the pencils are lovely to use and the colours are vibrant with good

This a good versatile set of coloured pencils. You can use them like ordinary pencils, pastels or create colour washes with them.I was worried that since they are chalk based they would need a fixative, but they are quite stable. I like the wet application best – using them as crayons then stroking a wet brush over them. I have created some stunning water effects using this method. Using them on textured paper also creates interesting effects.Even though you can mix the colours to create new shades, I think that it is short of three colours: dark green, light brown and a red with a coral edge to it.

Having recently got into the adult colouring fad, I've purchased a lot of different colouring mediums and colouring books. One of the books I bought was the Vogue colouring book. It has line drawings taken from Vogue magazines in the 50's. It's such a lovely book that I wanted to use something other than the usual pens and pencils. I tried pastels but found them difficult to use for finer detail. I looked round for pastel pencils and based on reviews I went for the Carb Othello pencils. I'm so glad I did too! They are so easy to work with and the colours are beautiful on the page. They make colouring in the fine areas of the drawing and are so easy to blend!
