Solidly built derailleur. Bought to replace/upgrade the very low-end SRAM derailleur originally fitted to my bike, which was now worn out and had become sloppy. This derailleur shifts cleanly (in conjunction with my SRAM SX4 shifter), and was pretty straightforward to get set up. My drivetrain feels so much smoother now, and doesn't suffer that ghastly creaky-grating noise when powering uphill!I didn't find any fitting instructions, but isn't hard to figure out. [Edit to add: a month later when preparing the box for recycling I discovered the instructions hidden behind the 'false floor' of the box!]Notes for anyone who's not done this before:- SRAM have their own "1:1" actuation-ratio system (cable moves same distance as derailleur),while Shimano uses "2:1" (cable moves half as far). This derailleur is therefore only compatible with "1:1" (SRAM) shifters.- if you previously had a different model of derailleur, you should be prepared to also fit a new final-length of gear-shift cable-outer (plus end caps) from the frame to the derailleur to get neat and functional cable-routing.- I was lucky that the required shifter-cable length was shorter than my old derailleur, so I could keep the previous cable. If you're not so lucky, you may need to fit a new cable too.- If you struggle to get the 'H' limit-adjust on the derailleur to reach the smallest cog, it may be that your derailleur-hanger has suffered some knocks in the past and needs to be bent back- Brake- and gear-cables and outer-housing tubes can be hard work to cut (and attempting to can damage other wire-cutters) - the Park Tool Cable and Housing Cutters (CN-10) makes the job really easy (cuts through these cables like a knife through butter).

This was a replacement for the identical derailleur that came on my 2011 Trek Ticket Exchange. Funny how smacking the derailleur on the side of an aluminum bleacher bench can mess it up... ;) I'll go the old 'pros & cons' route here, cons first:Cons:* Really only one: all of the adjustment screws (high/low limit & b-adjust) have a small sharp "tip" on them for some reason. In the case of the b-adjust, the tip actually eats/chews into the body of the derailleur, right on the edge of a lip, and eventually with some thrashing & such the derailleur body can kind of bounce around between two points (on the tip and off), totally ruining your shifting short term and long term breaking up the metal edge of the derailleur body and ruining the entire unit.I strongly suggest when you get this new, remove the b-adjust screw & use a hacksaw/file/etc to just remove that little sharp tip from the screw to avoid this. This allows the screw to sit squarely on the metal body of the unit.Other than the above, I've been happy with this derailleur.Pros:* Performance: it shifts well, no complaints here. It's pretty crisp, no sloppiness, and no slippage so far* Price! I'm loving it because I frequently bang things up, since I am mostly freestyling on/around concrete which is not forgiving to derailleurs (or anything else). MSRP is $26 bucks.

In the product description it mentions that this derailleur can be used with a 9-speed cassette BUT IT DOES NOT. I'm currently running it with an SRAM shifter set with the same actuation ratios but no matter how much I tighten/loosen the cable, I can't get a smooth transition through all nine gears. It lags around the fourth/fifth and doesn't reach the largest cog. It's not a bad derailleur at all, I bought it for the road bike i assembled from the frame up. It didn't fit the derailleur hanger perfectly that came with my frame but I was able to make it work for now. I'll have to look into another hanger soon.

A strong and lightweight derailleur! A couple reviews mentioned the derailleur not being able to drop to the bottom gear. This is possibly because they did not use the adjusting screws for the proper adjustment. I use this on my Cannondale M300 that I've converted to a lightweight commuter.Another qualm I had was being unsure of whether or not it would work well with X.4 rapid fire shifters, but it does work well. The package includes its compatibility features and it will work with a pretty good variety shifting systems.

Great derailleur, smooth and precise. Has nothing to envy to shimano alivio (equivalence), maybe comparable to deore. I've been using it for about 500 km. and the behaviour couldn't be better, if you spend some time to adjust it properly. First day i had a stupid crash with the result of a painfully deep scratch all along outer case. I thought that would mean the end of the derrailleur, but i was surprised when it kept working as nothing had happened. Really tough gear. Good choice for 8 sp. transmission.

I've used the X4 derailleur for commuting for the last three years and in harsh, rainy conditions. The derailleur requires minimal adjusting and is constructed well. I ride to work 5 days per week and I maybe need to adjust this derailleur once every 6 months or so. You can get more precision (precision as far as quieter shifting, less "clunky" shifting, but it shifts accurately) shifting from higher end derailleurs but for the money this derailleur does a fine job and it is a great value.

I got this for my 2010 Trek 4300 to give it a more comfortable ride and a more solid shifting platform. I have accomplished both and over 150 miles later have not had to adjust it except for the occasional barrel adjustment. worth every penny.09/12/2012 update. The derailleur has worked great but the plastic insert that the derailleur hanger set screw goes through stripped out. Its an easy fix but still should be a harder plastic. im going to bump it down to four starts due to this.

Bought this to replace my stock derailleur on a Mongoose Terrex. For a low end derailleur, it is a vast improvement over the stock one. The shifts are snappy and quick. Unfortunately, after a couple months of riding, I broke my first x.4, so this is a replacement. I can't say that it was due to the quality of the item though, because it believe I may have hit a rock, which broke the hanger on it. For 20ish bucks, I can deal with having to replace them here and there.

I don't know much about compatibility of bike parts, so I chose to buy the same derailleur my bike brang from the retailer, see the specifications of this product on my super webpage Amazon, many words that Trek does not specificate, I had some fear before choosing it, but with FaQ on amazon...........problem solved, follow the advise of other people, bought it and...................the same part was looking for....

For the price this is a great derailleur. I paired mine with a X5 shifter, KMC X9 9.3 chain, and a PG-950 9 speed cassette. I used this group setup for a Surly Troll 1x9 setup and it has worked great. I change out the setups on my bikes from fixed, SS, and geared, quiet often and most of the drive train components I use are SRAM. For the price vs. quality aspect, SRAM can't be beat.

Sofar so good. I installed the Sram X 4 on my bike which is a seven speed casette. After some tweeking it shifts on command. I give it a five star rating for its look how well it works and ease of ajustment. I'm not a serious MTB rider but I am 300lbs ( and loosing the weight) I hit the up hill climbs with a heavy foot. It shifts well under that condition.

The only reason i'm giving this a 4-star rating instead of 5, is more of a design issue than anything with the seller. There is no cable adjuster on this derailleur. I would have had to get a cable stop anyway with my cable routing, but it just seems a little odd. however, i do like the bare cable routing to the cable stop, that is a nice design.

Haven't installed it yet. Still waiting on a replacement chain Before I install it. Thought I would give an early review though as the deraillure came with NO instructions and was actually black. Not the two tone shown in the description. Guess I'll hit up YouTube once I get the chain to figure out how to install and adjust it

my X3 version broke which is hardly surprising, it was plastic and cheap. this, the X4 has far more alloy parts in it, the jokey wheels are replaceble and the bearings are much smoother.Changing seems smoother. its easy to set up and well worth the few pounds extra. The X4 is a direct replacement for the X3.

I couldn't pick faults with this product, it looks and works great compared to my 10 year old SRAM X7 and its perfrect for my downhill bike (it is old so I didn't want to spend much on it)Would recommend to anyone wanting a good cheap 8 speed mech no matter what respect of cycling they intend to use it for!
