I was lucky enough to get this hatchimal over Christmas at the retail price of £59, to be honest I would be had been gutted had I paid over the odds for this. The hatchimal box itself is very appealing so I can see why children would want one. I purchased the pink penguala egg as it was for my daughter. The outside of the box has an egg on top but this actually has nothing to do with the egg inside, the egg is smaller than this. You simply remove all of the packaging and the hatchimal is attached to the packaging by some clips underneath, once these clips are undone the egg will come to lifeIt lights up and makes a lot of babbling noises which can be annoying. The hatchimal does come with clear instructions with each noise explainedBlue lights and shivering sound - hatchimal is cold, rub bottom of the eggRed lights - hatchimal is upset, rub bottom of the eggOrange lights - hatchimal needs to burp, pat back of the eggOrange flashing - hatchimal has the hiccups, tap side of egg to scare itGreen lights - hatchimal is sick, rub bottom of the egg or tilt the egg to help it sneezeDark blue lights - hatchimal is scared, rub bottom of the eggWhite lights - hatchimal is sleepy, rubbing or tilted the egg will wake itWell as you can see the process requires a lot of rubbing the egg. During this time the hatchimal makes a lot of noises such as yawning when tired, shrieking when scared etc. After around 15-20mins the egg started to hatch, I have to say this was quite fun to watch. The hatchimal moves round inside and uses its beak to crack the egg, it stops, has a yawn and nods off. My daughter tapped it and off it went again until it had broke the shell all the way around and the top pops upOnce hatched you need to pull the hatchimal out of his base to release him. He walked for a bit, made a few sounds and sung happy birthday but then that's all. Sadly the fun has peaked and there's not a lot more to do with it. I don't personally think they are worth the hype but my daughter loved it and was over the moon to receive one hence 5 stars. Also I can not fault the service of the seller as this arrived the following day, at a sensible price and well packaged.

This was actually a much better product that I expected. It’s still ridiculously overpriced at RRP but for around 30/40 pounds I think it’s a good value toy. My daughter is 11 and probably a bit on the old side for this but was thrilled when it arrived. Bit disappointing when we realised the egg on the packaging was not the actual egg and the egg inside was quite a bit small but I guess they can’t risk these things breaking as the hatching is a major part of what you are paying for.So you unscrew 2 little plastic bits on the bottom of the egg to get started. This activated the battery. The egg then starts making noises and glowing different colours. If you tap on it, it taps back the same number of times. It’s pretty captivating. You can tip and hold the egg various ways to interact and there is a cheat which tells you what all the colours means “aww he’s sad, pat his head!”.After a while the hatching process begins. The creature is on a little turntable and turns and pecks all the way round the egg. It was quite exciting seeing his little beak poke out and it worked quite well. We had to help him out at the end and he needs to be very firmly pulled out to release him from the turnstile which was a bit nerve wracking (thought I’d broken it!).He then goes through 3 different modes, baby, toddler and child. In each mode he can play little games and the lights continue to reflect his emotions and health. He is a bit loud but you can half his volume by holding his tummy in when you turn him on which is a relief. He’s a nice fluffy little robot and much less obnoxious than a furby. He is a novelty toy and not sure he will get a huge amount of play time but delivered a lot of fun on opening day and a younger child may find him more appealing for longer.

The egg is bigger than I expected and it arrived with a small crack on one side. However, that didn’t spoil the hatching process. I somehow expected it to take longer to get ready for hatching, and although there are instructions on how to stop it from doing so there’s no fun in keeping it as an egg for longer than necessary so we just let it get on with it.During hatching, it struggled to break through on one side, so even though 70%+ was completely open, the remainder took a while longer. We didn’t interfere, but I imagine younger children to be more impatient. Once the top was free to move, we followed the instructions to ‘pull firmly’ to remove the hatchling from the base of the shell, but it was extremely tough and took two children and two adults to actually manage it. Then the fun began. The growing stages are fairly quick (but you can reset it), and the instructions for what to do depending on the eye colour seem quite complex—a handy one page guide helps alongside a thicker, more detailed booklet.Yes it’s cute, and fun, but after the novelty of hatching (which had all the family’s attention), she’s only had a few outings to play. I wonder how much of that is caused by the novelty of hatching effect?Anyway, she’s got lovely purple and yellow coloured fur, yellow wings and a green beak—adorable. I’m not sure how many variants there are but we liked the idea that we wouldn’t know what she looked like until she hatched. The only reason for dropping a star is the difficulty of removing her from the egg base. I feel that the child should be able to do this themselves because it’s part of the experience.

My little girl really wanted one of these, but I was put off by all the bad reviews. All I can say is that I shouldn't have been. Hatchimals. Need. Patience. They are not going to work unless meticulously unpacked, nurtured properly both before and after hatching. I do know there have been some defective ones, I can only thank heaven that ours wasn't. We removed the packaging and unlocked the plastic locks according to instructions and the egg came right to life. In twenty minutes it was ready to hatch. We did help it, as the instructions said we could, and it was out of the egg in less than five minutes. The one thing I will say is you really need to give it a firm tug to get it free. The Hatchimal is incredibly cute, playful and loving with no app required, and no sudden morphing into being sick or drunk or evil, for which again, thank heaven! You can even turn it to half volume, a boon as one of its growth stages includes rather a maniacal giggle. My little girl hasn't put it down, she says it's the most amazing thing ever ever ever, and she'll never forget feeling it hatch in her hands till she's a hundred and fifty. I really couldn't ask for more.

My nine year old was delighted with this for a surprise present, and although probably more suitable for smaller children, she absolutely loved it. After some stroking of the egg, it began to hatch and the whole family ended up watching the magical moment! It's strange, but it really does seem to build a different connection with the toy than just pulling it out of the packet. Once it's hatched, it becomes much more of a "run of the mill toy" - fluffy outside over a hard plastic body, and plenty of electronics to make it whiz round, flap wings and make lots of cooing sounds, as well as say the owner's name.Overall, without the hatching experience, I'd say this was a fairly average toy, with not a huge amount of longevity. However, the hatching experience is pretty unique and does seem to create a stronger bond between child and hatchimal. It's not cheap, so the question is whether you're prepared to pay the premium for the hatching!

I ordered this when I saw it available on Amazon at the retail price. My four year old was excited about hatching the egg and couldn't wait to see what was inside it and what colour it was. About halfway through hatching it decided to stop and wouldn't get going again, so I had to remove the rest of the egg myself to get the hatchimal out. It didn't spoil the enjoyment of the toy afterwards (although hatching it is probably the most exciting part). The stitching could have been a bit more secure around the top of its head. I had to secure it back in place when I noticed it coming loose a day later. However, my children really enjoy playing with it. You can turn the volume to half way if it gets too loud, but the noises are mainly chirps and jingles. I would have given it 3 and a half to 4 stars because of the chance the egg wont hatch properly but it is a fun, cute little toy when you finally get it out.

There is so much bad press for these toys but I have to say it has been a massive hit with my 4 year old. My elder son enjoyed the hatching process too!I think our egg was temperamental and needed us to give it a poke in the fixings at bottom to encourage him to wake up after a long sleep but once he finally got going there was much excitement when he started to make an appearance.I was so pleased to get this from Amazon at normal price - it has gone to bed with my daughter (I had to convince her not to have him actually IN bed as I would like some sleep tonight!) and I anticipate lots of fun to be had with him.Best Christmas present ever!

Bought it as a gift for my six year old niece and she opened it today. It's a remarkable toy, very engaging, she (and me and her brother and her mother and her father) enjoyed playing with it and watching it hatch. It's a lovely toy a I'm really glad I bought it. Is it worth the money??? I guess it's worth whatever you are willing to pay for it and I was willing to pay over the odds.Great, great present, the price is the only reason it's not a five star review. Also have to give a shout out for the free delivery. I ordered it from Italy on Wednesday night and it arrived on Saturday morning. Over all I'm very pleased.

My daughters face when she opened this was priceless...which makes it worth the money in my eyes (still wouldnt pay more than retail) like any electronic toy it is a bit of a novelty and sure enough it hasnt been played with as much as other toys however it still gets a bit of attention each day. It is quite small in size, smaller than furbys, however good size for my 4 year old and does make them cuter. No trouble with the hatching process as others have had..this was definately my girls favourite bit

Daughter loves it. It hatched well by itself, apart from the bottom third of the egg already being open so I had to hold the egg firmly together while it did its hatching process! After 2hrs of solid playing it had grown up but my daughter enjoys playing the games with it. Once it grows up it still has the same sounds and coloured eyes when its cold, hungry etc. There is also a reset button if you wanted it to become a baby again. Its a lot of money but she loves playing with it.

My daughter wanted this for Christmas and it's a great little toy. She had lots of fun with it for the first 3 days and now well she still play with it from time to time. Me as a parent I really like to see how it hatch (see the mechanism) and see how my kids are playing with it like it's a real kid. However I find it expensive to be played with for 3 days but hey it's like that with most the toys anyway. The toy works really well and it's really cute.

We have bought a Hatchimal every Christmas for one of the children in our family once they are old enough to appreciate it. It ALWAYS goes down well and the experience of it hatching is always fun for everyone from the kids to the great grandparents. The Hatchimal itself is not interesting enough for children to maintain their interest as a main toy and it usually goes to the back of the toy cupboard after a short while

My nephew loves it. It's basically like a furbie, so very different from the smaller hatchimals you may be used to. Less of a collectable and more of toy you love and train. I prefer it for my nephew as it's one thing he can play with rather than keep pestering me for more of the same ones!! Again though, it has the big problem they all have where the most fun part is opening it, and then the fun dips.

My daughter loved watching this hatch, which took about 20-25 minutes in total from unpacking to hatching. It's a nice touch that you have to interact with the egg as it's hatching, keeping it happy by rubbing it or tapping on the shell, etc. It's a sweet toy once it's hatched, too. My daughter has had fun interacting with it and responding to its noises and flashing eyes.
