Spider-Man: The Movie for the GCN (and other next-gen systems) has very good points and less good points. The good:The plot follows the movie pretty closely. It adds in a bunch of extra villains and activities that weren't really in the film, but unless you want the game to be two hours long, there's not much else to do. But in any case, it's pretty good. The graphics are *far* superior to the Spider-Man game released a few years back on the Playstation. It's clear that it's built on a similar engine, but everything looks a lot better. The outdoor levels, in particular, feature a very long draw distance and a very realistic-looking city skyline. Finally, the gameplay through most of the game is fantastic. The outdoor levels, where you get to sling and swing your way across the New York City skyline, are stunning. Even the indoor levels look pretty good. And Spidey is equipped (eventually) with a wide variety of acrobatic moves, and an expanded repotoire of web abiliites, such as pulling himself forwards while running towards a wall. You can also get a first-person view, making those tricky swings and zip-lines much easier. Swinging no longer eats up your web meter, making the outdoor levels much less tedious. So what's the problem? The gameplay really bogs down in the middle of the game, while you're trying to sneak into and investigate Oscorp. There are several levels where you have to crawl around in the shadows without being seen, and these stand in stark contrast to the non-stop action of the rest of the game. I found them to be mostly just a huge pain -- especially when I opened one door in the Oscorp offices and was immediately shredded by half a dozen combat robots. Whoops, guess I wasn't supposed to go that way. Also, many of the levels seem very, very linear. I know they're trying to make the game accessible to younger players, but there *are* other gameplay mechanics than "Oh no, the bad guy is behind a locked door. Find the key and/or switch that opens it!"I am also not a fan of having to find dozens of hidden little items throughout the game to unlock all your abilities. I wish they'd just give Spider-Man new combos with each level, and only hidden a few of them, or have the hidden things be stuff like extra costumes, artwork galleries, etc. Maybe it's just me.Finally, what exactly are you swinging on in the outdoor levels when you're between or *above* buildings? Just a thought. :PAs far as licensed movie games go, it's a winner -- though there are better titles out there for the GCN. I'd probably give it 3-3.5 stars for its uneven gameplay, but I'll bump it up to 4 just for the fights against the Green Goblin. :)

STORY:The story is the same as the 2002 film with some extra villains added in. Kraven the Hunter is not available in the Gamecube version, sadly.GAMEPLAY:The gameplay in this game is very similar to Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro on the Ps1. Web-swinging is infinite and your webs attach to nothing, there are many combos, you'll be facing many enemies at once, and your web attacks are limited. You even have limited web fluid for some reason. Levels are divided into outdoor and indoor levels. Outdoor levels focus on web-swinging and aerial combat, and indoor levels focus on stealth and hand-to-hand combat. Stealth is all-around not fun and boring, and the combat is very repetitive. There are also some laughable excuses for puzzles, but I play Professor Layton for puzzles. I play this game for mindless fun. Also, if you beat the game on all the difficulties, you unlock four extra game modes: A horde mode, a more difficult horde mode, a racing-type game, and bowling (Yes, spider-bowling). Also, you can play as the Green Goblin, who has completely unique gameplay.CONTROLS:Controls fluidly, but the camera is harder to use than the PS2 version because the GC has 3 less buttons than the PS2 controller.OVERALL:Even with repetitive and sometimes boring gameplay, this game is definitely worth a buy. This game isn't for strategists, but it is a fun 3rd-person brawler.

You read that correctly. There is no superhero game in existence that is better than this. I base that on faithfulness to the character, ability to actually use all of your superhero powers at will, and sheer amount of diverse combos. In fact, there are so many combos, that you'll probably never use them all.You literally feel like Spider-Man during gameplay. He jumps, he flips (dramatically), he sticks, he swings, he shoots webs, he cracks jokes, he crawls... (...even around edjes. Those who've played older Spider-Man games know why I mentioned that.) How can a fan not like this game?Mark my words, the ONLY complaint there is to have about this game is the fact that you can't land on the street, when you're swinging around the city.Oh, and one other thing, you can play this game twice, and it will be a slightly different game. By that I mean, you can actually play as the Green Goblin, enjoying ALL of his abilities as you fight through the game (unlike the Shocker or rumored Vulture cheat). You're even recognized as the Goblin throughout the game. Ingenious!

This game is great for 2002, it surprises me how much detail in the graphics gamers have demanded in terms of this year compared to 2002. I am a huge fan of both Spider-Man series, so this was really fun to experience the first movie again. I really liked how the game seemed to me like an alternate, extended version of the game-with more villains added in and an interesting twist to the ending. I was surprised, and extremely happy, to hear Tobey Maguire voice as "Spider-Man" and William Dafoe act as "Norman Osbourn /The Green Goblin". Their voices made the game seem more authentic. It's still strange that I only got the disc and a paper cover for it, even though it was on the discription, but still! If you overlook that detail, it's a great game!
