My girlfriend brought this and asked me to work out the controls for her. Four weeks later, I finished the game and immediately started again. This is a rollplay game in as much as you control a single character and are joined on occasion by 'rune' adventurers but what nails this is the ability to create whole villages and armies and to head them out into battle against the enemy. It can be breathtaking, once you have come to grips with the intuitive interface, to see your legion of windarchers mowing down the oncoming enemy as you cut and slash your way through the throng. The storyline is built around the age old concept of saving the world, that is semi medieval and magical and is full of adventures and quests alongside the main storyline, which steps you through three comprehensive chapters, each of which contain many quests and subquests. This encompasses races of humans, elves, orcs, trolls, dwarfs and dark elves. Each race has its own distinctive traits, strengths and weaknesses. This game was originally released circa 2002 I think but running in 2007 on my pretty new machine the graphics turned all the way up were stunning, a real bonus and added to the atmosphere.A great addition to any computer owners shelf of PC software, even if you are not particularly a gamer, I am not - my favourite game before this was Elite (circa 1983). The warning though must be that this is hugely addictive and don't think finishing the game will be the end of it. You will want to do better next time - the clever story including the end sequence will make sure of that!Pro - Possibly the most absorbing game I ever playedCon - A really very minor one: When your in the middle of a battle you can press TAB to select the next available baddie. Unfortunately pressing TAB will usually select the next baddie standing some way off and not the ones you managed to lure out of the camp, so you end up running away from your rune buddies and everyone dies, if your not careful.

I came to this from a background of having loved the Baldur's Gate, Warcraft, and Dungeon Keeper series, so the promise of combining computer-RPG with medieval-style resource management was one that I found compelling. My hopes and expectations were high.Largely, those hopes and expectations are being fulfilled by the game -- it's keeping me up past bed time, which is the acid test! The gameplay -- particularly the resource/strategy stuff and the battles -- is very good indeed. The character development is less pronounced than I'd like, partly because you spend so much time zoomed out, but it's still there. Still, compared to the antics of Minsc and Boo etc from the BG series, the RPG aspects of Spellforce are thin indeed. The graphics are gorgeous. I've seen comparisons with Dungeon Siege, but I never got on with that game so can't really comment. You will need a decent 3D card. I'm using a Radeon 9600 Pro and it's fine. What about the flaws?Firstly, some of the voice acting is truly awful, as if they ran out of time/money and roped in their next-door neighbours. Some of the work sounds professional, but there's enough stilted, flat delivery that I've actually missed what was being said on occasion, because my brain was so stunned by how bad it was.One piece of screen dialogue (so far) came up in German, again suggesting that the final production stages were rushed (and perhaps explaining some of the female-Schwarzenegger-style voice work :-)Again related to sound, the unit personalities that were present in Warcraft aren't here: they don't have their own distinctive voices. This is a shame, because the game atmosphere could have been so much deeper given more attention to these details. All in all, it could have used more polish -- particularly on dialogue and sound -- and maybe it wasn't quite ready for release, but for wargamers and RPGers, this is one that's worth a close look.

Good points:1. This game lets you build up your hero with experience points and skill points which you can allocate to certain skills (unlike DS). You can choose to become a fighter or a spellcaster or both! A huge range of spells. Equip your hero like Dungeon Siege with assortment of weapons, armour, rings, helmets, shields etc. Collect gold to buy more stuff.2. It actually plays like Dungeon Siege with 3D third person view or you can zoom out if you want to. You can have up to five companions.3. Bonus point in this game is you can build units like Warcraft as well. Collect resources like iron and wood and off you go. Units include Wintermages, Paladins, Elites, Battlepriests, Druids to name a few.Imagine Dungeon Siege battles with your hero and the 5 companions AND all your other "build" units, it's awesome.4. Choose to play with 6 races! Elf, Human, Dwarf, Orc, Dark Elves and Undead. Each unit is nicely detailed.5. Huge maps and lots of side quests. Still haven't finished this game yet. A BIG game.6. Nice graphics and nicely detailed units especially when zoomed in.7. Save game anytime anywhere8. Nice plot and story that keeps you interested.Bad points:1. Graphics not as "polished" as Dungeon Siege but still gorgeous. Will need a good graphics card2. Crashed a few times.3. Sound can be better.4. Slow to load (this is on a P4 2.8 Ghz 512 DDR )Conclusion:Kept me enthralled for hours on end. Missed bedtime. Missed food. Reluctant to stop. Girlfriend gets angry. Dungeon Siege + Warcraft, it doesn't get better than this folks. Excellent entertainment. BUY! BUY! BUY!

I bought this game as a part of a bundle buy, I had seen it a few times when browsing amazon but never got round to buying it. My only problem with the game was installation a quick detour to their website solved this and off I went and I am so glad I spent the time getting it working! This game is fantastic it brings together Dungeon Siege and Warcraft enabling you to go out alone or with a small group of rune warriors and if you encounter anything too powerful you can go off, build yourself an army and come back and destroy all in your path. The game is challenging and I have had to reload a couple of times. The way it handles experience system is akin to Dungeon Seige and there are numerous and interesting quests to solve along the way add to this the ability to zoom in and out on battles and you end up with a spectacular game I cannot recommend this game any more!!! If you like role play games or if you like Warcraft then this game is a definite must. The Graphics are great, the voices are ahem ok and the game play is unbelievable. BUY IT NOW!!!!

Spellforce is a mix of Role Play and RTS. You have a character that you control, and you need to talk to people to complete quests and you gain experience and levels etc. You also have to build armies and workers to complete battles with the enemy and gatter resources. The RTS side feels a bit like Settlers (which isn't a bad thing in my book) and the Role play bit is a little bit like Baldur's Gate (but not as immersing an experience). You play in the side of light in a battle between the forces of good and evil - so far everything sounds exactly like what you were expecting, and that is my major gripe with the game. Whilst it is fun to play and it does have enough going on to keep you busy,it suffers from being a bit predictable. I suppose that's because it's an RTS with some Role Play stuck on.This game does come recommended, but don't expect anything groundbreaking. 8/10

The only reason I'm not giving this game 5 stars is because in my book that means perfection, which this game is not.Peculiarities aside, what a great game. A truly engrossing mix of RPG and RTS, and it actually works. Seldom did an RTS keep me way past bedtime; that most social life damaging of capabilities was more often than not reserved for RPGs such as Baldur's Gate or Gothic2. This one does it. Addictive, straightforward play, intuitive UI with some very nice innovations such as the Click&fight system, lush graphics, a superb soundtrack... my only gripes are with the occasional AI glitches and the truly horrendous voice acting, reason why I bought the German version of the game, where the characters don't sound like I asked my neighbour next door to perform some voice acting. All in all, do yourself a favor and go buy this game, AND the Breath of Winter add-on too.

I was a little skeptical about buying this game, skeptical because I had seen many online reviews that gave "Spellforce" a bad name and only a few that praised it.Although when I did buy it (from Amazon) I was not dissapointed, the game offered the player the power to create their own "avatar" with their own special attributes, and offered freedom of movement and many wonderful battles. The Game includes many spells, enemies and weapons, but I would say that IF you are planning to buy this game then buy along with it "Spellforce:Breath of Winter" add-on, as this lets the player access an almost skirmish mode of play, which lets you as the player be free from all missions and follow your own destiny. All in all I will sum "Spellforce" up by saying:"I'ts only REALLY worth getting if you get an add-on with it".

Bought it a few weeks ago and am now totally addicted, but why 4 stars and not 5 - There are a few glitches:When you first buy it I would suggest that you update your video card driver and also connect to the Spellforce website and download the patch - they have already found a number of problems. If your game does not work they have a good team at Bigben Interactive who call you back straight away. Also it is a very hungry game using most of your assets and can lock out, Warning - save your game frequently. This has not stopped me from enjoying this great game and if you like Warcraft III type games you will like this.Have fun.

I have now played through the whole thing once, which took quite a while, and for the first time in my life I have started again, even though I knew the story and maps. There are numerous sidequests still waiting and the sheer pleasure of the graphics and the gameplay drew me back. This is truly one of the great games that will define the genre.

28.3.2005

I agree with all the previous reviews. GREAT GAMEJust be warned however that you will have to get the update patch version 1.11 is best. (Spellforce forum)Make sure your graphics card and motherboard drivers are up to date (nvidia type NFORCE2) or you will have problems running this game and during the game.

Have played this game before but moved away and didn't take it with me. Not gory or bloodthirsty but lots of battles and building armies, building up strength, planning ways to overcome enemies. A lot of fun.

Just what the doctor ordered! It was just as I expected as I had previously owned the game and needed a replacement.
