I'm sure that most of us remember when Soul Edge (known as Soul Blade) appeared in the english arcades. A medievil fighting game where your characters ran around with weapons and beat each other up. Like other fighting games of that time, Soul Edge had a storyline behind it. When it was released on the PlayStation as Soul Blade, the game's popularity continued. It was a good 4 or 5 years before the sequel, known as Soul Calibur, appeared in the arcades.Unfortuatley for PlayStation owners, Soul Calibur was only released on the Dreamcast. But now, Soul Calibur 2 has come to the PlayStation 2.Unfortunatley, i'm not known for my patience. So when I heard that the english version of Soul Calibur 2 wasn't going to be released until September,I went out and bought myself a Japaneese import of the game. I can honestly say that I do not regret buying it for one moment.Fans of Soul Calibur will be pleased to know that most of the characters are present in this game. I've only noticed Rock, Lizardman, Hwang and Siegfried missing from Soul Calibur 2. Also, all the characters seem to of retained their moves from Soul Calibur, which is nice as it allows you to just jump straight into the game and start playing with your favourite character.Soul Calibur allowed you to unlock special characters and stages by completing the Arcade mode several times. Soul Blade had the story mode where you played one character who went across the world, picking up special weapons as they went. Soul Calibur 2 adopts this story mode. You play one character that you can change at any point during play. Completing the missions earns you gold and exp. The more exp you get, the better your character is. The gold allows you to buy new weapons, new stages, new costumes for your characters and even unlock the exhibition theatre. Completing the missions can also unlock stages and new characters for play. The graphics are definatley improved from Soul Calibur and the music is just as good. However, I have noticed some slow-down in graphically complicated levels. Thankfully, this doesn't last long and it isn't enough to affect gameplay either. The amount of new features that can be unlocked in this game will keep you playing for hours. I've had the Jap version for around 2 weeks and I know i'm only about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way through the story mode, which I believe is called Weapon Master mode.If you enjoyed Soul Blade and Soul Calibur, you will love this game.

Imagine all the best things about the Tekken series - the great combos, the variety of characters and fighting styles and moves - combined with all the best things about the Dead or Alive series - the fast fluid action, the beautiful graphics, the counter-moves and amazing grabs - and you've got Soul Calibur II.After the rather disappointing Tekken Tag, I got rather disillusioned with the whole fighting games genre on PS2. That is until I discovered DOA2. Okay, so it had too few characters, and was sometimes a bit samey - but the gameplay was so fast, so fluid, so instinctive - the countermoves were amazing and involved great timing - the depth of the game, from button bashing beginnings to 10 hit combo mastery was so great that it kept me addicted. It also allowed me to bond, humiliate and be humiliated by good friends, and isn't that what gaming is all about? But since then, there's been nothing. And recently Jann-lee's been getting boring, and even the electrified fences and explosive endings, though eye-candy, have grown a little tiresome. And Virtua Fighter 4, for me and friends, was a big disappointment. And we've been waiting, praying, for a game that would combine the wealth of characters in Tekken with the playability of DOA. And now we have it, Soul Calibre II.It has the counters, the grabs, the characters, the depth, the skill, everything that it ought to have. Yes, it's similar to Soul Calibre I. No, it isn't pushing the boat out and ripping open the graphical boundaries of the PS2. Yes, the plot in Weapons Master mode is plain pap. But guys and gals, who cares? The fun you will have playing this game, in one player or with your mates, will be so immense, so instantly satisfying and at the same time long lasting, that you simply won't care. You'll start off doing great moves by accident and beating your mates with luck. But then you'll graduate to classic counterblocks, followed up by a 8 hit Cervantes combo, pushing your opponent to the edge of the arena before plunging both swords in his chest a throwing him out of the ring like an oversized kebab.I can't compliment this game enough. Like Pro Evolution Soccer 2 (and 3 hopefully) it's the top of its class in its genre, and you'd be thoroughly stupid to miss out.

I will start off by saying that I have been a fan of beat-‘em-ups for quite a while now. In my opinion, there is no finer genre out there. The feeling of kicking a buddy’s ass is tremendous I feel, and also the fact that the gameplay is so fluid, intense and adrenaline-filled just gives me a buzz. True, you may opt for longer-living puzzle games like Ico, but for me the excitement just isn’t quite there. So after being a fan of beat-‘em-ups for quite a while, when I heard about the most hyped beat-‘em-up of all time; Soul Calibur 2; I simply had to get myself a copy. So I pre-ordered it. And I am not in the slightest disappointed with the game. The game has an array of characters, each with their own personality and feel to the fighting. Some are easier for newbie’s to master, whilst some are increasingly difficult to master but are doubly rewarding. For instance, Voldo has lots of stances and different moves that HAVE to be learnt. If you were to choose him and press any button then you would get hammered. This variety between characters increases the game’s shelf life. For instance, you may opt to master one character one week and a different one the next. The gameplay and graphics are solid. I haven’t seen prettier graphics anywhere on the PS2, they are simply gorgeous. The gameplay is very very fluid, and could be mistaken for real-life fighting. Where Tekken is like a phrase, in that it ends once the combo ends; Soul Calibur is like a descriptive sentence with commas that flows on and on, maybe with a pause here and there. The gameplay is adrenaline-filled and fun to play. There is also the “Weapon Master” mode that gives you a goal when playing on your own. You can work through it to get better weapons and costumes etc. Sure Arcade mode is fun, but the “Weapon Master” gives it a little bit of purpose, a little bit of finesse.Overall it’s a lovely game and one which I would encourage you to buy. If I could only keep one game for the PS2 this would be it!!!

SoulCalibur 2 is a great game. It makes you feel good from the first time you play it. You can pick it up and be producing some flashy and slick combos in a couple of minutes, but it also has such depth that you can spend ages mastering all the different elements of the game.If you have not played any of the previous games in the SoulBlade and SoulCalibur series then you will probably need a little while to make sense of the story line, but that is not really a problem, after all the game is about action after all. Oh, and what action! When you first approach the game it appears to be really fast paced, and you can continue to play it that way if you wish. After a while though you find that you can take a bit longer in battles to set up moves and dodge and weave through your opponent's guard before delivering your swift and sweet strikes. The graphics are truly beautiful for a game of this type. The characters are all excellently modeled and the backgrounds look gorgeous. The effects when you strike a blow are bright and eye catching, but the 'sparks' that you raise when your blade clashes with that of your opponent are the what really makes this stand out visually as the most classy beat 'em up on the PS2. When you add to this the impressive effort that has obviously been put into the sound effects and voices in the game and the neat little touches like taunting your opponent between matches the whole package just shines with quality. This is a game that you will enjoy for a long time. You can come back to it time and again and it draws you in, comfortably letting you progress at your own pace through the Weapon master mode, and giving instant thrills and delights in the arcade and extra arcade modes. In all then, this is excellent value and maximum fun, bringing a big smile to your face right from the start. It looks and sounds lovely, and you can play at whatever pace you like. Total beat 'em up class!

I was never into fighting games that much, after all, how many people can you beat up time after time! This game completely changed my opinionAfter completing it for the second time, the sheer greatness of the game has not lessened its hold, i have had it for 11 months and am still not bored with it! - Now that's what i want from a gameThe learning curve of the game is just right, using story mode to bring you in to the game fairly gently as you begin to build up your moves repertoire with your favourite characters, then it begins to get harder and the real challenge sets in. You begin to have to be tactical with character choice, weapon choice and even the type of attacks/defences to use during battles. The amount of things to unlock is incredible, and the way to do it changes all the time. Sometimes you have to win a certain fight, or play a game mode a certain amount of times, or simply buy the unlockables with the money you get from fighting in the various modes. The range of unlockables is very varied also: weapons, characters, levels, videos, conceptual art and game modes. This is a key feature in the lifespan of the game and i still haven't unlocked everything!Seeing as this is only one of the few fighting games i have ever played i may have a biased opinion, but it uses the 8-way run (moving not just towards and away from the enemy, but to the side as well) extremely well, certain attacks stop others doing it, whilst others miss completely allowing a real increase in depth to the game, once you pass the amateur stage. These are the best bits, not to mention the amazing graphics, superb fluidity of gameplay, excellent sound and immense attention to detail. If you want a good game, buy this!

This game has everything a fighting game fan would want. The gameplay is amazing even though there are not that many moves to choose from in comparision to Virtua Fighter 4, but the moves available more than make up for that. The wepons master mode lets you journey through a range of different tasks including cool dungeon levels were you have to navigate through a kind of maze while fighting other opponents. But Necrid is quite cool he can create different wepons with his hands. If i had a choice between which version i could get it would have to be the Gamecube version for Link because he has the best wepons like bow and arrows aswell as bombs. But as it is this is by far the best fighting game on a new console and probably the best PS2 game i have ever playerMy VerdictGraphics/ambsolutly stunning the lighting effects are soooo cool, the characters are all very well animated and it all runs at a crisp pace 9/10Gameplay/ The wepons master mode is very adictive and at the same time adds variety to the game. As for the multiplayer it is by far the best multiplayer game on the PS2 10/10Lifespan/ This game will last you ages in the multiplayer department but the wepons master mode is not that long, but it is cool that you can use the wepons you buy against you opponent and adds a bit more depth to the game 9/10All in all this is a essential purchace for a video gamer!

Right, just as a start, though I know all about the original Soul Calibur and Soul Blade games I never played them. This basically means that this is a completely novice point of view of this game. And what a game. This is what Fighting games should be like. I own Mortal Kombat 5, which isn't terrible, but it pales in comparison to Soul Calibur 2. The graphics are near perfect, looking as good as Final Fantasy X at the obviously faster rate that a fighting game requires. As expected the need to unlock extra features and characters becomes more important than eating and sleeping, but doesn't become the only reason you can be bothered to play the game. What makes Soul Calibur the best fightinggame for the PS2 in a long line of sucess and failure is the different styles of game incorporated into a standard idea. Beyond the simple round 1-3 kill you opponent matches, there are technical matches too. Though this can be irritating... for instance it took me an age to get past a mission where you could only kill your oponent by using moves that bounced them off the floor or walls, it means the game isn't a monotony of 50 second rounds.I can only finish by saying "Get this game". Now if you don't mind I need to go and finish Arcade mode for all the characters.. after all there are at least 7 weapons and 1 character I haven't unlocked yet.. they must be in here somewhere.

This game is awesome. Basically, you pick a character (who has a weapon) and then blat every other character on your way to total blateration.Since every true gamer knows that graphics are the most important aspect of any game, let me reassure you that these ones excite me. Deeply. Everything about them is fantastic - crisp textures and tons of polygons. A gamer's wet dream (sort of). There are almost billions of game modes, including such favourites as Extra Time Attack and Extra Vs Team Battle, but also including exciting new variants such as Arcade and Vs. They all give you tons of stuff to do - I've been playing my copy for nearly three years solid and I've unlocked everything. There are a multitude of different weapons for each character, and each has its own strengths and weaknesses, such as 'effective against nostrils' and 'unable to attack when facing northwest'. This adds totally hidden depth to the game, and it's many a time that I've tried to use my weapon to clobber in an enemies ears to find out that the weapon I'm using 'only works against elbows'.My only criticism of this game is that there are three different versions, and I want Spawn in all of them. Spawn is the king.

When I bought this game, I could not wait to put it into my PS2. And when I finally did, I could not put it down. You start with a good number of characters..and when you play the various modes like time game, etc, you unlock features. The features include new characters (or old characters if you played the earlier games) and new levels. The graphics are superb and the gameplay is easy to get the grips with. But ofcourse it takes practice to master some of the really good moves. One of the best things about this game is the Weapon master mode which is basically a story mode. Through this you earn gold which can be spent on purchasing new costumes, weapons and levels..as well as character weapon exhibitions.I love this game, but if I had to make one complaint, it would be that a few of the Weapon master missions can get really frustrating..but those are few and far between. All in all, this game is worth every penny and I strongly recommend it!!

The graphics on Soul Calibur 2 are amazing for the PS2 especially the fighters and music is pretty good too. The gameplay is very fast and fluid. All the characters have massive weapons apart from Heihachi from the Tekken series. In fact each of the three formats at the time had there own unique bonus character. On the Gamecube you had Link who is ace and for the X-box you had Spawn. One of the single player modes is called Weapons Master where you unlock more characters and weapons which is a good challenge. Out of all of the beat-em-ups I've owned on the PS2 I have always found I went back to this one the most it is very enjoyable and additive. Even My dad likes this game which is rare for him to enjoy many video games.Soul Calibur 2 really rocks big time in two player mode and should not be missed if you want the best beat-em-up for your PS2 in My opinion.

I bought the PS1 after I saw the breathtaking introduction of Soul Edge (aka Soul Blade). I bought the Sega Dreamcast just to play Soul Calibur. Boys, this game rocks! While on a side I am disappointed about the secret characters (Sophitia is meaningless once you have her sister in the playable characters, and I never suffered Seung Mina) and missing some (like Rock and Siegfried) well... this game is more than exceptional. Too bad you only have five stars maximum to rate it... the playability is immense, the longevity awesome (thanks also to the Weapon Master Mode), the overall graphics and sounds incredible... if you liked either of the predecessors... well, this is a must. And if you like beat 'em up-style games... once you will try Soul Calibur 2 you won't play anything else. This game is not recomended. This game is simply necessary to any serious player.

Gameplay is the best when it comes to Soul Calibur II, the graphics are the best i have seen in a long while too. You have all the basic moves found in other fighting games, such as dashing, throwing, guarding, and reversing. Commands like half-circles and quarter-circles are generally not found in other fighting games. Each character has his or her own unique weapons and you can collect more on weapon master mode. There are unblockable moves that are really cool too! This is the best fighting game around. If you play with your friends, this game is even better. If you play alone, then you can play Survival Modes, Arcades, Weapon Masters, Time Attacks, and view galleries. If you are doubtful, rent it first (Though you probably regret forking out the few quid to rent it when you buy it straight afterwards).

Soulcalibur 2 is by far the greatest beat 'em up to date. With it's beautiful graphics and flawless gameplay. Plus it's just so addictive. There are plenty of game-modes for players to explore including the massive 'Weapons Master Mode' where players can collect new weapons, characters, artwork and much more. Every character is unique, some you love and others you hate. I advise using Kilik if you're a beginner for easy wins ^^Soulcalibur 2's biggest asset though, is of course the VS battles. Where you can play against your mates (assuming you have any) and gloat each time you kick butt. This is a must have game for any hardcore gamer.Hopefully the Soulcalibur series will continue it's legacy of perfection in the next installment!

The best game money can buy... An absolute must buy for any gamer who owns a current console! The gameplay is stunning, smooth play rolled into intensive must have more gameplay makes this title an absolute pre-christmas cracker. All the unique characters to eachmain stream console are equally as good as each other, just different in their specific fields- This combined with near infinate unlockables makes the predecessor look like childs work.On a serious note, this is well worth the money, and is delivered within days of ordering. In fact, you'll be wishing you had been wishing the days away after playing this gem in a bow. Nice one Namco, you've truely excelled yourselves!

excellent game at last.Fast fluid action which you can string together into fluid moves. Think Tekken 4 with weapons. The only letdown is that the weapons master mode can get a bit tedious (especially where there is no option to retry a level, it simply tells you you've failed, and sticks you back onto the main screen where you have to reload that mission again).Otherwise a brilliant third effort (soulblade was first on ps1, THEN soul caibur came out as a SEQUAL on the dreamcast). Also, why do PS2 owners get that old gimmer heihachi whereas Xbox gets Spawn and NGC get the excellent link?Otherwise a definite must have
