This is one of the few 100% pot still Jamaican rums you'll see. 99% of rums are from continuous column stills. The difference is that pot still rums are made in batches and much more of the flavour of the mash comes through. And in this case that mash is made extra flavoursome by the use of ambient yeast (i.e. they don't add yeast, it's just there in the mash and vessels) and the addition of dunder (the waste product after distillation). All this combines to make a rum that contains a lot of esters and other flavoursome compounds and is likely to be how rums used to taste back in the old days, when modern methods didn't exist.if you're used to the generic rum flavour of Captain Morgan/Bacardi or the molasses twang of navy rums, this one might come as a bit of a shock. To be honest, the initial smell is almost overwhelming and may bring back memories of that time you were sick on tequila as a teenager. But let that pass and things get interesting. There is fruit, spice, sweetness and a more behind the strong alcohol hit and they're in the taste too. It's one of those drinks that has so much going on, it never tastes the same twice and develops in the glass. A drop of water releases a lot of flavours, rather like a good scotch. If you're after a generic rum or you've got used to the dishonest faux-aged, sugared & flavoured concoctions they sell as "vintage" rums these days, this might take some getting used to. A liqueur in the glass it ain't. But if you hanker for the true taste of Jamaican rum, made like it was and something that will keep you interested then go for it. There is more to run than the marketers slapping "12 year old" on the bottle.

Watch Out! You've Been Warned ....This is a behemoth of a Rum, not for the faint hearted. But if you enjoy rum in all its forms, this is one to experience like no other. Neat, it is a firebomb of flavours. As required by the British Royal Navy, this strength meant that a spill of the spirits would not prevent gunpowder from igniting! In fact, at 114 thermal degrees it is above the threshold requirement of 100 degrees (50% by volume). So it deserves some respect.Personally, I prefer it with a good ginger beer. Bundaberg works well. The inherent sweetness of the Bundys goes very well with the searing heat of the S&C. Still plenty of fire but greater opportunity to experience the wider flavours of a gorgeous Jamaica style rum.I heard someone liken it to a 'Laphroaig'in the whisky world. I wouldn't disagree.

Like Wray & Nephew's overproof offering, Smith & Cross is a 57% proof true original. It's marginally smoother than W&N thanks to a light ageing, but it'll still make your eyes water drunk neat. People can love or hate this stuff because of its high ester/funk/'hogo' level which some people are just genetically disposed to find repellent (if you don't like strong, 'gamey' or fermented flavours you might be one of those people). Thankfully I don't have this disposition at all, I like those flavours and I love this stuff. Even so it's probably not a rum you're going to be knocking back a ton straight (please don't) and even mixed, less is going to be more.

Love this rum... As Jamaicans we usually drink Appleton Estate as a dark rum or Wray n Nephews white rum. HOWEVER, this was a pleasant powerful smooth rum which we have come to love over the xmas period. Big up urself Smith & Cross..nice..nice.

Strong and highly flavoured. Bit different to all the others I've tried. Would be great to give a kick to cocktails and is a fiery straight shot which packs a punch.

Absolutely delicious rum. Such an uniique flavour. You can smell it as soon as you pour it. Excellent straight with a single ice cube or as a mixer. Fantastic.
