this is just a review of Smash up: Awesome Level 9000, and this assumes you have played the original game (though this can be played as a standalone, it is primarily an expansion). To recap, the point of smash up is bring to seperate 20 card decks together to create off combos, and then play to score 15 points by capture bases. The game is fast (once you have played a couple of times, the first time, everyone is reading card text and it takes longer), entertaining and simple enough to teach in 5 mins.First and foremost, this expansion doesnt break the game, which is always a concern with these sort of expansions. If anything it adds greatly to choice and combos, and so adds a great deal to the game without changing or warping the core dynamic. This expansion brings 4 new desks to the table, and all save one seem to work very well with each other and the main desk.Steampunk - a base building set, a heavy emphasis on building up and recycling.Ghosts - a minion recycling set that gets more powerful and potent the less cards you holdKiller Plants - think little shop of horrors, these plants grow and gain power.Bear Cavalry - big and scary, they largely force others to move out of there way.The bear Calvary have become a fast favourite, being entertaining to play and generally versatile. The Steam punk and Killer plants are both fun visually and easily mingle with the other decks for some fun combos... the only issue is the ghosts. Every time they come up, they give the impression that under the right circumstances they become very good in longer games, but as most decks generate cards, the ghosts requirement of "holding 2 cards or less" becomes a deck breaking crutch.Overall a great game, and this expansion just makes it more fun, even if we might have to retire the Ghosts if they dont start pulling their weight....

Smash up is a fun and interesting game, where players pick two classes and combine the cards for each, this means that each game is customised by the players as they get to pick who they want to combine to create their 'team'. The players then take it in turns, being able to play an action and a minion each turn, though some cards vary the amount of actions and minions that the players may play. This is a great game for 3 or more players and is still suitable for 2 players however in the past I have found that with two players the first player will pick the robot race and provided they pick another reasonable race the game is often won by the player that chose robots. This is eliminated in three player as there are more cards and more choices for the players to make regarding who they can screw with. Cards like destroy a minion can be played to subdue opponents and in a three player game this is no simple matter as the decision to act against one player may result in unexpected champions. The expansions really bring this game to life as this allows players more choice for their team combinations and it also expands the game to fit more players.

I was in the apparent minority that liked the Cthulhu expansion, but the Science Fiction Double Feature (love the ROCKY HORROR reference!) brings the game back to basics, and the basics are pretty awesome. So what's my favorite new faction? Hard to say. The Super Spies keep sabotaging your opponents' plans, the Cyber Apes are a fearsome combination of brains and brawn, the Shapeshifters mimic others' powers and abilities, and the Time Travelers are almost impossible to destroy -- they just keep coming back into play. SMASH UP is the kind of game where it's really tempting to throw strategy to the winds and just enjoy the pummeling you can dish out to other players, but it's satisfying for groups of like-minded,strategic gamers too. Fast food or upscale fast food, it's all how you play it.The card artwork, by Brynn Metheney, Victor Perez Corbella, Wen Juinn, and Igor Heras, is a pleasure to look at.

Ds -18, absolutely loves this game. There are 4 base cards that have 'rules' that affect the cards placed on them, the aim is to use your cards as strategically and cleverly as possible to win bases and hence points. Sometimes the wording on the cards can be convoluted and confused by whatever it is placed on but according to ds and dd this is all part of the mental sparring fun in justifying your actions and your advantage. Think you need to be quite cerebral to play these. Involves lots of talking and discussion which the teenage boys we know love.

Love playing this game with friends. My only quibble is that the "Pirate" faction seems really underwhelming (Not just my opinion either) and the Zombies seem a little more powerful than the rest. I'm considering getting the expansion just so I don't have to pick the Pirates ever again.Other than that, great game! Super easy to learn, cards are good quality and the art is (mostly) fantastic. The cards fit in Standard sized sleeves (Like Magic: The Gathering sleeves) to stop wear and tear. Id' highly recommend it! Just... don't pick the Pirates

I enjoy collecting the smash up series and this box is as high quality as it gets! Room for a hundred more factions (at least!)I do feel like I should add to the description though as it doesnt mention the plastic dividers for each faction OR the fact that you get the "geek" faction with this box featuring wil wheaton and felicia day themselves!!At the price of their normal 4 faction expansions I would buy this last, (as thats when you'll start running out of room) but definitely buy it!!

This game is brilliant in two ways, firstly its super easy to pick up and play. Secondly, the more people you have playing the more tactical and interesting the game becomes..It doesnt take too long to play and the fact you can choose to mash two random factions together gives it fantastic replay value. If you haven't tried it yet, get it and give it a go! I bought it, introduced my friends to it and now its one of our games of choice. Will be buying the expansion to it soon too!

As a huge fan of 'Smash Up', this was the first of many expansions to be purchased. The addition of tokens to keep score was nice. The decks themselves are really different to the original for the most part. It's one thing to have nice sounding or looking 'races'(?) but these work well in the game aswell. Some are a tad stronger than others in my opinion, but that's maybe sour grapes after losing badly to the girlfriend, so i'll let you decide for yourself on that one.

Excellent game. Knocked off a star because it really needs at least one of the expansions to keep replay value up. Deck combinations get a bit repetitive until you add in 4 or 8 more. Having said that, you'll probably get through a couple of dozen games before this becomes an issue. Also, many people like to specialize in one combination, so lack of variation is less of a problem for them!

Yes, I know that this expansion divides opinion, and I know the whole Cthulhu thing has got a bit obvious, and the Innsmouth faction is really rubbish, but I really like this expansion. It's the one I'll always play with, given the choice. The madness mechanic gives a welcome extra dimension to the scoring, and it fits really nicely with the expansion theme.

Although the original game provides hours of changing excitement, I found very soon that I was looking for more factions to choose from. Despite adding only 4, this expension offers precisely what I longed for. Can hardly wait for more unique character-groups.

If you, like me, went mental and bought too much Smash Up stuff - this box will keep it all in one place. I've got my cards in ultra pro sleeves and it all fits nicely. Makes the game into one item instead of a half dozen boxes.

Once you get your head around the rules, it's such a fun game to play and recommend it to anyone who likes strategy card games and with the different characters, it's added entertainment

Well worth getting if you like Smash Up. Plenty of space for everything Smash Up related, now and in the future. I love the plastic faction dividers included, very smart and durable.

First saw this game on Table Top (You Tube with Will Weaton). It's great fun and very easy to explain to new players. Mixing the decks really adds a good amount of re-playability.
