A part on my ten year old Manfrotto carbon fibre legs broke and the part is no longer made - so, having no budget, it was these Slik 500 legs on a Clearance offer at my local indie photo store. I traded in my Manfrotto head (also 10 years old) for the head here on the Slik.Always liked Slik - had an 88 way back in the eighties and it is still (just about) usable but as a 6'2" tall chap have always liked their height and relative stability for the money.I use a tripod most days and usually in dark muddy fields and river banks, doing night-time long exposures, often for many minutes. The heavy pro Nikon D700 with equally heavy 17-35mm f2.8 Nikkor lens, coming in at about 2kg is extremely comfortable on the Slik, even at the extended height, which is comfortable for me as it about my eye level. That is impressive. I've yet to try the Sigma 150-500mm on it, which would really test any tripod and Slik's claim of the 500 being able to handle a lens up to a 300mm f2.8.- I since set up the 150-500 on tripod at home and shot an interior at 500mm f22 for 30 secs. As sharp as a tack, with the whole unit feeling quite secure, via the tripod collar on the lens, of course and the tripod not extended. Outdoors in the wind could be rather different but the whole set up does feel secure and the tripod up to the weight. -It's a reasonable weight, with good solid actions on the legs but at least compared to the Manfrotto head, a few of the plastic gnarled knobs are rather cheap and fiddly. Another downside is that one of the handles has to be totally unscrewed - it has a very LONG action - before the collapsed tripod can be placed in the bag that came as standard. The twist key action to fasten the plate to the camera is easy to use and is permanently in place and doesn't require a coin or anything separate. That bag is better than nothing but isn't the most comfortable or easy to carry, but its inclusion makes for better value for money. There is no spirit level built into the tripod. As I always use the one built into the camera, this is not an issue for me, but might be for those who have older or film SLRs.I understand that 500 is able to go quite low. I have yet to try this out, so cannot comment. In conclusion, the legs get 5/5, the head 4/5 but the overall package and for its value brings it all up to a solid 5 stars. I enjoy using the tripod and I like even better how little it cost me, compared to what can be spent on a tripod these days. Recommended.

I made do with a cheap (ie £20) hama tripod for over a year. Although it was small and light the wobbliness drove me insane so I bought this one. The difference is astounding. Negatives out the way first - this tripod is NOT light or compact. It's remarkably small closed down considering the size it is fully extended, but you can't just slide it into a backpack easily which may be a concern if you're travelling. The weight is definetely an issue as well. I really recommend buying a tripod bag along with it. The other thing is the leg clamps can get jammed by dirt/sand. Worth remembering if you're doing some long exposures on a beach. Now the good:It's absoloutely rock solid.I have a Nikon D40 with a fairly substantial lens (sigma 18-200) and there is just no hint of wobble or vibration. I do quite a bit of HDR work and the frame alignment is always great, bearing in mind the D40 doesn't have bracketing so I have to manually adjust exposures using the control wheel for each shot. Long exposures always come out razor sharp as well. It's of course less sturdy with the central column fully up, but by that time it's taller than me.The build quality is excellent. When you use the clamps and levers you know it's been well designed. The foam padding is much appreciated if you carry it alongside you. The only slight oddity is the quick release lever. The quick release plate itself is metal, as is the mount it slides into, but it the lever is cheap-feeling plastic. I think the reason for this is so that it will wear and can be replaced cheaper than any of the other parts. That said, after 9 months of fairly hard use by me in lots of different conditions it's still fine so I wouldn't worry too much. The head is butter smooth when moving and the clamps really lock it solid when you tighten them. The central column can be inverted so the camera can be hung upside down between the legs. Never needed this but I'm sure some will find it useful. The legs can be locked to only extend so far - the lowest setting it looks just like in the picture, but if you unclip a part at the pivot the legs can go almost horizontal. The feet are rubber and great on concrete but can be a little unsteady on soft surfaces. I'm sure you can buy spikes if you wanted them. All in all, probably one of the best value tripods around. I know it'll last me years to come.

Wow. I did a lot of online research before making this purchase and I have to say that the glowing reviews are justified. I have a 25+ year old, Full size Slik "prototype SL-67" professional tripod, with geared centre column, that is still going strong, so I was well aware of where their quality was in years past. My old tripod is a superb tool, but the centre leg braces and immovable centre column means that getting really low was impossible with this tripod. I also have a 10 year old Manfrotto 190 which is also capable, but since upgrading to a heavier Canon 5d3, grip and now also using a 70-200 2.8, I just needed something more, having encountered some high wind wobbles and buttock clenching near misses.I have coupled the new Slik Pro 700DX with a Sirui K 40x ball head and I am now ready for anything. Rock solid, the ATM alloy used in the beefy 3 section legs seem more than up to the job. The head that the tripod came with is amazing quality too...I just prefer a ball head. Another plus is the fact that the centre column can now be halved as standard, thus allowing a wide stance and very low aspect. I stand at 5' 8" and with legs fully extended, eye level is perfect on the Sirui K-40x without having to extend the centre column at all, another plus in the quest for ultimate stability. All in all, this tripod gives the impression that it should cost 2x maybe even 3x what I payed Luzerne. It just feels right. Compared to carbon fibre, yes, it's heavier, but not impossible to haul. Personally, I prefer a little more heft in a tripod. Weight=stability, which is, let's face it, why we use tripods. Portability is of secondary importance to me, and an equivalent to this 700DX in Carbon Fibre would cost roughly 6x the price I paid I am sure, but by no means is this product a "Cheapo alternative". I can highly recommend.

I was about to order a Manfrotto (legs only) tripod for considerably more than the cost of this Slik Pro700 after spending hours searching online, reading reviews and perusing through several camera stores. To be honest I was only considering a Manfrotto or Giotto, but a friend suggested Slik were equally as good and after finding numerous glowing reviews I ordered the 700DX from Cameraking via Amazon marketplace. Two days later the tripod arrived - fabulously packaged. I have to say I was more than pleased with the result. Fully extended it reaches towards 7ft tall - suited to the tallest of tall photographers. The construction is absolutely solid; the legs easily exteneded or collapsed and the 4 way pan and tilt head wonderful to use. There is a quick release/attach plate for the camera - so no more messing about screwing/unscrewing when you need to handle the camera on its own. Two inbuilt spirit levels ensure your shot is square-on when needed. The tripod isn't lightweight as this would be a compromise to its sturdiness - but on the other hand the AMT alloy used helps to make this sturdy tripod as light as possible. The top section of the legs are protected by thick rubber type black sleeves.Inside the box I was suprised to find it came supplied with a zip up nylon shoulder bag (which the more expensive makes don't supply), making it easy to carry the tripod around with you.All in all I heartily recommend this for anyone looking to buy a serious amature / semi-professional type tripod without having to break the bank. I promise you won't be disappointed. Top value for money and easily on par with the best of the market.

The price and quality of the item is more than you can ask.I have been using this more than 6 months and very pleased with this tripod.I always say every item has its purpose, this one fills mine just fine.Original head is rigid and sturdy, i use this with my filming head, but sometimes putting original one for pictures. All clips, screws, fasteners, lock rings are good and does what it should do, so no loose parts or wobbly dodgy things when you using it.It is very steady and sturdy on the ground i have tried to use it in its maximum heigh on higher winds found it very safe and steady.Maximum height with camera is about 1.9m at its top, which is perfect for me.The only downside to some might be its weight (which i personally fine with it),it could be heavy if you need to go far enough or climb a mountain or something, but i like that because it doesn't need any weights with it and it is tough as it can be.i have done my homework when i was looking for tripodI am happy that i got this one and i know it will last me agesif you are not on a big budget but you are looking for something that would the job buy it its for you ;)

Like the previous reviewer I was also looking at the Manfrotto tripods when I came across this. So far the tripod has been fantastic, its well built and very sturdy. It may be a little heavy for travelling any distance but it depends on how far you have to carry it. If you are looking for lightweight I would suggest looking elsewhere. Having said that, I recently took this tripod across to the US (it fitted in my case diagonally) and was very pleased with the performance. The legs are well built and the locks on the legs feel tight and solid. The central column is smooth to operate and locks tightly. The height of the unit is superb,I used this at the Grand Canyon and was able to put the tripod into some lower lying positions and dips near the cliff edges whilst still allowing me to look through the viewfinder without stooping. The tripod came with a pan and tilt head which I found to be very good for starters although I have since replaced it with a Manfrotto MN222 Grip head.Overall, this tripod is solid, sturdy and very tall, a bargain at the current price and a pleasure to use.

Excellent sturdy tripod. I bought this for use with a large heavy camera (a 4kg medium format behemoth) and it is fully up to the job. The legs are thick and incredibly rigid. It extends higher than anyone will ever need. The head is good, it locks really tight so nothing will flop.Of course, it is large and heavy. When the handles for the head are on, it doesn't fit into its bag (you are supposed to take the handles off every time). The foam on all three legs is nice, but it's just soft foam and the instructions warn it will need periodic replacing. So what do you miss out on compared to a Manfrotto costing twice as much? Nothing really. It's just as rigid, just as good at doing the job.About the only thing I can think of is that I believe some Manfrottos have folding handles that you don't need to remove. I think considering the reasonable price the Slik Pro 700DX is a winner!

I bought this tripod in October 2007 expecting an adaquate tripod for the £70 I paid for it. On delivery I was very pleasently surprised at both the build quality and steady platform provided for my landscape work. The build quality is every bit as good as anything else on the market at this or indeed a higher price. I honestly do not believe that the higher priced Manfrotto tripods are or indeed can be, that much better for the increased cost. The head is excellent with very smooth action, and the whole tripod is well finished in matt black with foam uppers on the legs for comfort when carrying and as a buffer to any subsequent knocks it may take outdoors. The whole kit smacks of a quality job.It lacks only a on-board spirit level to make this a top-notch product, but well deserves its 5-star rating in any case.

I have had a cheap and cheerful tripod which I bought ages ago off the auction site.it did the job but thats where is ends I was like the previous reviewers going to purchase a Manfrotto but a friend had the Slik and after reading the reviews and seeing the price decided on buying this one and what a difference it makes no more wobbling and it is just so easy to use and money well worth spent it is a tad on the heavy side but it suits me fine .The quality is here in the handling of the pan and tilt and the lock in the legs this is so sturdy really rock solid and very adaptable for all types of terrain and I love the inverted way to take close up low shotsIf you are thinking about a new tripodyou could do a lot worse considering this one.

I bought this item after reading several reviews and also buying a SLIK monopod, which was recommended to me me by a Pro photographer. I was told, excellent quality but not as expensive as some of the other brands. Bang on the money! This is a quality item that will last for years, the build is great, the movement is smooth, it is rock steady. It is a little larger than I was expecting but then its not a light weight travel tripod. Comes with a shoulder bag, however I use a Lowepro backpack and this fits on fine, but wouldn't take this on a long hike, thats what I have my monopod for... All in all a great piece of kit, I can't fault it.

2.5.2013

I was a little dubious about spending so much money for a tripod but I needn't have been. It really is superb value for money. This is a rock solid piece of kit that will produce better images over cheaper tripods. The legs can be set at different angles and it can raise my camera higher than my head or down to my feet. Then you can choose any height between. The head is nice and smooth for cameras too, although I would want a little smoother if I were to shoot video. This is easily the equal of tripods costing £300 so save some money and buy this one instead.

Great bit of kit this. Previous to this purchase I'd had the cheap, flimsy aluminium tripod that came with my DSLR as part of a bundle. I do a lot of extended exposures from rooftops and the slightest breeze would cause untold blur. This on the other hand is as solid as a rock, even with my largest lens and a bettery grip fitted. It is a little on the heavy side when strapped to my backpack and carried all day but other than that miner issue it's perfect. In my opinion, well worth the money and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a new tripod...

Rec'd Thursday am after ordering on Monday pm .....very well packaged.First impressions are of a high quality product; sturdy construction; nice details such as high quality foam covering legs; leveling vials...Easily assembled and intuitive to use. Once erect feels very solid.Currently using with a scope.Don't usually take time to complete reviews, but this is such an outstanding, value-for-money product I felt SLIK and the retailer deserve all the positive feedback.Anyone would be pleased to use this tripod................

19.10.2012

Bought this for a new Opticron spotting scope and wish i had done more research. If you are 6ft tall or thereaboutsthen you need a bigger tripod. I have to have it fully extended (including the centre pole which greatly reduces the stability in the wind).Still a good product and great for someone with a medium budget and less height than me ;-)I did actually read the specs and measured the height at home before but that is deceptive when compared to having the tripod in front of you andsetting it up with a scope.

13.3.2012

Lighweight, easily collapsable and lockable legs. It appears surprisingly robust and well made. Whilst I haven't used it 'in the field', I have set it up with camera and 150-500mm lens and it is perfectly stable providing the camera is orientated correctly with the camera and lens pointing directly over the front leg....do not understand other reviewers who say these tripods are unstable. Comparatively, and superficially at the moment, it seems excellent value for money.
