A part on my ten year old Manfrotto carbon fibre legs broke and the part is no longer made - so, having no budget, it was these Slik 500 legs on a Clearance offer at my local indie photo store. I traded in my Manfrotto head (also 10 years old) for the head here on the Slik.Always liked Slik - had an 88 way back in the eighties and it is still (just about) usable but as a 6'2" tall chap have always liked their height and relative stability for the money.I use a tripod most days and usually in dark muddy fields and river banks, doing night-time long exposures, often for many minutes. The heavy pro Nikon D700 with equally heavy 17-35mm f2.8 Nikkor lens, coming in at about 2kg is extremely comfortable on the Slik, even at the extended height, which is comfortable for me as it about my eye level. That is impressive. I've yet to try the Sigma 150-500mm on it, which would really test any tripod and Slik's claim of the 500 being able to handle a lens up to a 300mm f2.8.- I since set up the 150-500 on tripod at home and shot an interior at 500mm f22 for 30 secs. As sharp as a tack, with the whole unit feeling quite secure, via the tripod collar on the lens, of course and the tripod not extended. Outdoors in the wind could be rather different but the whole set up does feel secure and the tripod up to the weight. -It's a reasonable weight, with good solid actions on the legs but at least compared to the Manfrotto head, a few of the plastic gnarled knobs are rather cheap and fiddly. Another downside is that one of the handles has to be totally unscrewed - it has a very LONG action - before the collapsed tripod can be placed in the bag that came as standard. The twist key action to fasten the plate to the camera is easy to use and is permanently in place and doesn't require a coin or anything separate. That bag is better than nothing but isn't the most comfortable or easy to carry, but its inclusion makes for better value for money. There is no spirit level built into the tripod. As I always use the one built into the camera, this is not an issue for me, but might be for those who have older or film SLRs.I understand that 500 is able to go quite low. I have yet to try this out, so cannot comment. In conclusion, the legs get 5/5, the head 4/5 but the overall package and for its value brings it all up to a solid 5 stars. I enjoy using the tripod and I like even better how little it cost me, compared to what can be spent on a tripod these days. Recommended.

I made do with a cheap (ie £20) hama tripod for over a year. Although it was small and light the wobbliness drove me insane so I bought this one. The difference is astounding. Negatives out the way first - this tripod is NOT light or compact. It's remarkably small closed down considering the size it is fully extended, but you can't just slide it into a backpack easily which may be a concern if you're travelling. The weight is definetely an issue as well. I really recommend buying a tripod bag along with it. The other thing is the leg clamps can get jammed by dirt/sand. Worth remembering if you're doing some long exposures on a beach. Now the good:It's absoloutely rock solid.I have a Nikon D40 with a fairly substantial lens (sigma 18-200) and there is just no hint of wobble or vibration. I do quite a bit of HDR work and the frame alignment is always great, bearing in mind the D40 doesn't have bracketing so I have to manually adjust exposures using the control wheel for each shot. Long exposures always come out razor sharp as well. It's of course less sturdy with the central column fully up, but by that time it's taller than me.The build quality is excellent. When you use the clamps and levers you know it's been well designed. The foam padding is much appreciated if you carry it alongside you. The only slight oddity is the quick release lever. The quick release plate itself is metal, as is the mount it slides into, but it the lever is cheap-feeling plastic. I think the reason for this is so that it will wear and can be replaced cheaper than any of the other parts. That said, after 9 months of fairly hard use by me in lots of different conditions it's still fine so I wouldn't worry too much. The head is butter smooth when moving and the clamps really lock it solid when you tighten them. The central column can be inverted so the camera can be hung upside down between the legs. Never needed this but I'm sure some will find it useful. The legs can be locked to only extend so far - the lowest setting it looks just like in the picture, but if you unclip a part at the pivot the legs can go almost horizontal. The feet are rubber and great on concrete but can be a little unsteady on soft surfaces. I'm sure you can buy spikes if you wanted them. All in all, probably one of the best value tripods around. I know it'll last me years to come.

I've had this tripod for a few weeks now and am probably in a position to offer some sort of meaningful review - so here goes.I use it with a Nikon D2X which is a really heavy camera in its own right never mind when the weight of lenses are added on top, and I can safely say that unlike the cheaper Jessops (RIP) own brand tripod I had before, this unit copes with the camera's weight at all angles very well and with good stability. So a big thumbs up there. It's quick and easy to erect to its full height (less than half a minute) and the tilt and pan head is simple to use and gives accurate movement whether it's small tweaks or large movements. The central column can be inverted allowing you tosuspend your camera upside down to take very low level shots and the central column unscrews in two to allow the tripod to drop down to a very small height off the ground - about 10 inches. Very useful. Now the downsides. The feature that helps give this tripod its much admired stability is its weight, some 4-5Kg I would say: which may not seem much at first, but soon becomes noticeable when carrying about all day - so just bear that in mind if you intend to take this tripod out for long hikes on a regular basis.Secondly, the unit doesn't come with bag of any description so one will need to be bought separately and my particular unit didn't come with any instructions whatsoever. Although I suspect this may be an issue with the Amazon Marketplace Seller that I bought it from and not generally. If 'no instructions' are the norm for this product then for someone who's never owned a camera tripod before - it's going to be a steep learning curve getting to know it it. Luckily I have, and I figured it all out in about 15 mins.Other minor downsides: the feet are rubber - fine for most surfaces and terrain, but the ability to swap for spikes would be nice for boggy ground and there's no hook on the central column to allow a sand bag or other weight to be suspend - useful in windy conditions as I have found with other tripods that I've owned. Finally, whilst not an issue for me, it may be for others - this tripod does not have any spirit levels on it.Overall a very good tripod for the money which would suit any semi-professional or amateur alike.

Wow. I did a lot of online research before making this purchase and I have to say that the glowing reviews are justified. I have a 25+ year old, Full size Slik "prototype SL-67" professional tripod, with geared centre column, that is still going strong, so I was well aware of where their quality was in years past. My old tripod is a superb tool, but the centre leg braces and immovable centre column means that getting really low was impossible with this tripod. I also have a 10 year old Manfrotto 190 which is also capable, but since upgrading to a heavier Canon 5d3, grip and now also using a 70-200 2.8, I just needed something more, having encountered some high wind wobbles and buttock clenching near misses.I have coupled the new Slik Pro 700DX with a Sirui K 40x ball head and I am now ready for anything. Rock solid, the ATM alloy used in the beefy 3 section legs seem more than up to the job. The head that the tripod came with is amazing quality too...I just prefer a ball head. Another plus is the fact that the centre column can now be halved as standard, thus allowing a wide stance and very low aspect. I stand at 5' 8" and with legs fully extended, eye level is perfect on the Sirui K-40x without having to extend the centre column at all, another plus in the quest for ultimate stability. All in all, this tripod gives the impression that it should cost 2x maybe even 3x what I payed Luzerne. It just feels right. Compared to carbon fibre, yes, it's heavier, but not impossible to haul. Personally, I prefer a little more heft in a tripod. Weight=stability, which is, let's face it, why we use tripods. Portability is of secondary importance to me, and an equivalent to this 700DX in Carbon Fibre would cost roughly 6x the price I paid I am sure, but by no means is this product a "Cheapo alternative". I can highly recommend.

I've been using this tripod with my Canon 550D for about four months now. Unlike many cheap tripods, it feels very stable and solid; I've never been afraid that my camera could fall down. However, I admit I've never used it in severe weather conditions (e.g. strong wind). It might not be one of the lightest tripods out there, but I don't think it is unreasonably heavy. Firstly, the weight provides more stability. (I wouldn't trust a light tripod with my DSLR.) Secondly, the tripod is not so heavy that there would be a problem with carrying it around. Whenever I went on holiday during the last few weeks, I've always taken it with me. It weights about 2.5 kg, and it fits very well in my middle size suitcase,so I've never had to make hard decisions whether I should or should not take it with me when I was flying somewhere.Nevertheless, I've got one criticism. As an amateur filmmaker, I find the pan head bit irritating. When you want to tilt / rotate it, you must loosen the handles; there are no separate 'wheels', which you could adjust the movability of the pan head with. However, once you loosen the handles, they become bit shaky, and they don't really give you the feeling of solidity or precision. This is not an issue if you just need to point the camera certain direction; if you want to take a photo / make a video in which your camera doesn't move. (Once you tighten the handles, the pan head is solid and it won't move.) Yet, if you plan to make a fluent, smooth movement while filming, the fact that the handles are quite shaky and they don't respond immediately to your movements can be quite nerve-wracking.Nonetheless, if you want the tripod mainly for stills, I'd say that Slik Pro 400DX is an amazing piece of equipment for its price.

I bought this tripod because it is tall first of all for a good price too. A tripod that hight and you are looking about paying 2 times this cost. This tripod goes to about 198 cm in height and that was a big buying factor for me. The tripod is made of aluminium, titanium, and magnesium fused together which makes this tripod durable and very sturdy. This also makes the tripod weigh over 3 kg with the pan head on it. It is not a good tripod for travelling photographers who want something super light weight. The tripod is basic with its working mechanism. It does take some time to set up this tripod too. It is not that quick when you want to make adjustments. It has a center colume that you a split which I recommend to do if you are using this tripod for landscapes so you can get this tripod lower height. The Pan head is awesome. It has a smooth like fluid movement. You can also change the head of this tripod. I prefer the Pan Head on this tripod because it is smooth as butter and has a quick release which is good enough for me. I also like that this tripod has a soft grip which is nice on your hands in the winter time. I am very happy with this tripod because I know my camera has something sturdy to mount on now.

Solid rigid construction, massive height when fully extended reaches over 7 feet tall with centre column extended although you might want to keep it about half that, the unique circular quick release plate helps with quick alignment and can act as a further axis of rotation, split centre column enables very low positioning for macro work when inverted, each section of legs has a very positive and easy to use click lock, upper legs covered in foam help keep your hands from freezing in cold weather also stops bruised fingers when you get clumsy. altogether a high quality item if you are looking for a flaw then some might say its the overall weight although its not exactly back breaking youwouldn’t want to carry it for any length of time unless someone else carries your camera pack I suspect if you obtained a lightweight ball head you could use it on a days shoot but its not a problem for me and you wont find bigger or better for this price anywhere, a perfect long term tripod and one that I suspect even a pro would be happy to use.

It was a hard task finding the right tripod, reviews, reviews; fors and against. The same product revealing 5* for some people and 2* for others and so on into confusion.I don't use a tripod very often, being just a keen amatuer and I haven't had one for at least 20 years.I do know a quality, well made product when I see one and the 400X is just this. You would have to be very nit-picky to find fault with it. It's beautifully made, is handsome, has, as far as I can make out, all the positions and adjustability that would be required for any image taking purpose.Has a quick release camera connection which locks in easily, first stage of legs has hard foam covering, is solid and is sturdy in use. When you consider what you can actually pay for some tripods it's a real bargain at just over £80.00.Fast delivery with good packaging. So highly recommended and to be bought with confidence.

This is a pricey tripod, but * well worth * the money.I use this tripod with a pair of giant 25 X 100 Celestron binoculars. This set-up is absolutely ideal for those. Although it is not possible to get to the zenith, that is not something I would expect with a tripod. The range of mobility of this tripod is outstanding. It also holds very securely a 4 kg, unevenly balanced set of binoculars. I never have any worry that it will dump them on the ground, so I can focus on the pure pleasure of viewing the night sky.The legs of the tripod have a spongy coating that is a God-send on cold nights. One can grip these without having to worry that your hands will freeze off.I have used these now a half dozen times - and I would highly recommend them for anyone with binoculars who wants range, versatility, and stability. Overall, I couldn't be happier.

I bought this tripod in October 2007 expecting an adaquate tripod for the £70 I paid for it. On delivery I was very pleasently surprised at both the build quality and steady platform provided for my landscape work. The build quality is every bit as good as anything else on the market at this or indeed a higher price. I honestly do not believe that the higher priced Manfrotto tripods are or indeed can be, that much better for the increased cost. The head is excellent with very smooth action, and the whole tripod is well finished in matt black with foam uppers on the legs for comfort when carrying and as a buffer to any subsequent knocks it may take outdoors. The whole kit smacks of a quality job.It lacks only a on-board spirit level to make this a top-notch product, but well deserves its 5-star rating in any case.

If you are looking for a tripod to carry around, this is probably not the best choice due to its weight. But if you are looking for something to have at home or at your studio and will only need to carry it around some times this is perfect. The tripod's head is extremely easy to use and it comes with a small bubble to help you see if the tripod is completely straight. The only minor "issue" is that the screw that attaches to the camera is a little bit small but I believe you can buy a bigger one.The legs are very strong and the tripod won't move a bit if you don't want to. The height is also an attractive feature, specially if you want to shoot from above. If you don't want a carbon fiber tripod,I totally recommend this. You even have a bag to carry the tripod. Excellent delivery conditions and timing.

I bought this tripod through Luzern seller here on Amazon. Unfortunately it went out of stock when I ordered it but a lovely lady from the company contacted me and assured me more were on order and would I wait or cancel? I waited approx. 10 days and it arrived. I also received other correspondence from the lady in between delivery confirming that the price agreed would be the price I would pay. I have now had an opportunity to use the tripod and I love it. As others have said, it is tall and it is a weighty bit of kit but that all adds up to a stable and robust bit of kit. I preferred a ball-head mount for my photography so I have replaced the video head it came with but that's me just being picky. All in all, a great addition to my photographic kit.

Rec'd Thursday am after ordering on Monday pm .....very well packaged.First impressions are of a high quality product; sturdy construction; nice details such as high quality foam covering legs; leveling vials...Easily assembled and intuitive to use. Once erect feels very solid.Currently using with a scope.Don't usually take time to complete reviews, but this is such an outstanding, value-for-money product I felt SLIK and the retailer deserve all the positive feedback.Anyone would be pleased to use this tripod................

This tripod was actually better than I expected, sold contruction and sturdy enough to take my canon 650dwith an 18-200 lens attached.slight shake at the top end but using the remote switch this solved the problem. Ideal for the budding novice like myself.item was bought to replace aslik tripod that was bought in charity shop but I like the slik bran so bought this upgrade.delivery from this supplier was excellent would not hesitate to use them again.

Bought so i could get good steady shots outdoors with my new superzoom (SX10)It's very solid in feeling and you can tell that the joints and parts are of a higher quality than a lot below this price range, this makes a nice difference to the trust you put in the tripod with your camera attached.I'd love for this to come with a bag of some sort as you can't use the box it comes in once you've got the tilt and pan handles attached.Recommended.
