This is a fab game for a 5 year old or 6 year old where you want a mixture of luck (so that the adult doesn't always win!) with some decisions to make. I wouldn't recommend it for the 8+ age range suggested though. It also works much better as a 3 player game than as a 2 player game - most of the decisions are about who to target, so having some choice helps! At the start of the game there are lots of queen cards laid face down in the middle. Each player has five cards in their hand. You take it in turns, play one card each turn and replenish to five cards at the end of your turn. You can use a King card to wake up a queen and put it in front of you and the objective is to be the first player to get five queens in front of you (or 50 points - each queen has a points value). There are other cards that steal queens from other players, put queens back to sleep, stop other players who are playing those cards etc. As well as these special cards, there are number cards which don't do anything, and you can switch these for other cards instead of playing a special card - either singly, as a pair of the same number or as three which make a sum. The fact that the number cards don't actually do anything feels slightly unsatisfactory from a game design perspective but doesn't detract from the game too much in practice.I actually quite enjoy playing it, which is quite an important criteria for games for that age - a lot of games for 5 or 6 year olds are just really dull to play. The pictures on the cards are lovely too. It's definitely not an interesting enough game for older kids or adults though.

My little niece (I don't think my sister would like me to use her name) is a delightful child at best, but doesn't like losing. I was a bit apprehensive about introducing her to a new game, because I was afraid that if she didn't win she would have a tantrum. To my great relief, though, she and her nine-year-old brother had a great time with it. The game itself is easy to learn (though admittedly my niece often had help), the pictures delightful, and play contains plenty of chances for the lead to change hands without being too random. The authors have done particularly good work in making sure the rules are clear. At one point, in a round when the winning score was 40 points, I scored 45.My niece shouted "You broke the roo-els!" I referred to the leaflet in the box, and there is a roo-el which says that you don't have to have that exact number of points to win: just to have that much or better. As well as playing it with the adults, the children also played it by themselves, which I felt was a sign of its success. As the game involves only cards, it would be easy to take on journeys to play in a train or aircraft, though I haven't let my sister remove it from this house because it was so popular here. The minimum age limit of 8 is probably sensible, because it requires arithmetic, but as the queen cards which have the scores on them don't have to be kept secret it is quite possible for a child who can't add to leave them out in the open and have someone else add the scores up. Strongly recommended.

‘Sleeping Queens’ – oh my God! This is SUCH an addictive game – I’m already hooked!!I don’t know why, I knew nothing about this Game, its Inventor or anything, but, I’ve been purchasing a great number of Card Games recently, and I saw this, and loved the artwork and just had great ‘vibes’ about it! Not often anything like that happens without even a slight disappointment as things are seldom as you expect, but this... I cannot fault the Game! I just want to keep playing, playing and playing - win or lose! I kept my partner from going to bed the day we got it because I wanted to keep playing, yet I hadn’t won a single game at that point! The mechanics of this Game are simple – yet have enough depth to them to both make it interesting to play, and to make it tactical as well as just ‘luck’! The theme is delightful, and the quality of the artwork and Cards is brilliant! This is one Game in my collection (almost 800 now) that I shall CERTAINLY be wearing out! (I can see myself purchasing another coy in readiness!)There’s got to be something wrong where anyone could not give this five stars - and it has NOTHING to do with the fact it was devised by a child; I didn’t even know that when we first saw and wanted it!Every game is different!FABULOUS and now one of my all-time favourites! :-)

Sleeping Queens is currently our family's favourite card game, requested over and over again by our 5yo and (almost) 8yo and equally enjoyed by us parents. While the age recommendation is from 8 years, our 5yo has no problems with the rules and tactics of the game (although she does need help with basic addition which is a minor component). Highly recommended, as well as the other Gamewright card games, where the ones we have tried all have great staying power:- Duck Duck Bruce (simple push your luck game, perfect from as early as 3-4 and great fun for adults as well, our favourite after Sleeping Queens, perfect to bring to restaurants/airports)- Zeus on the loose (great fun and a game we happily play with our 8yo,but slightly higher age bracket than Sleeping Queen as addition skills are needed (although of course children learn unknowingly as they play...))- Rat a Tat Cat (the first Gamewright game we tried with our then 5,5 yo, a firm favourite for a year or so until displaced by Duck Duck Bruce, but still very much recommended.)(Come to think of it, we have also tried Too Many Monkeys which is quite uninteresting, at least to adults. Try the above ones instead.)

This is our favourite game to play as a family. We have gifted it to a couple of friends and would highly recommend it. It has racked up more playtime than any of our other games and often we will play two or three rounds back to back. One game can be about 10-20 minutes. When we first got it we had to play through a couple of times but once it clicked it’s a very easy concept to pick up. It’s been great for teaching about sportsmanship - there’s no point losing your mind if a play goes against you as you might be able to pull it back round later, and you can’t be too hurt by an aggressive play as that’s the whole point of the game. It’s difficult to overstate what a positive impact that has had - turning ‘attacking’ moves into silly, funny moments has eased a lot of tension between my 5 & 7yo and that’s a great thing to learn in board games. My highly motivated, game-loving 5yo picked it up quite easily but it took my less motivated older child a few more goes to get it - thankfully the artwork and characters pulled her in. Even Granny cottoned on after a few plays!Really recommend this game, it’s a lot of fun.

My 8 year old daughter loves this game and it's one I actually enjoy playing with her too. You have your 12 queen cards asleep face down in the middle and hold 5 cards each. You play number cards either singly, or in matching pairs or in simple number equations, (4+6=10 gets rid of 3 cards in one turn.If you play a king card you wake up a queen, play a knight and steal someone else's, unless they can play a dragon to stop you. Play a sleeping potion to put someone elses queen back to sleep, unless they have a magic wand....First one to wake 5 queens is the winner. The cards are good quality with appealing pictures and though it's very luck based this works better when playing an with adults and children mixed. My daughter beats me about half of the time without me trying.I shall be trying some of the other gamewright kids card games now as we have played this one so much.

My 8 year old daughter and I played this incessantly when we bought it. I really enjoy playing games with her that are challenging enough to keep me interested. The luck factor is relatively high with this game, and your luck can run out quickly! But there is some strategy as well, particularly when it comes to deploying sleeping potions and knights. The illustrations are gorgeous and there is even a simple math element that you can use (players can exchange three of the numbered cards if they form a number bond - as in 2+1=3 - which means if your kids use some math they can dig for those kings!).You do need a little bit of space for this game, so not great on a plane or in a restaurant (unless you have a big table)- but fine for a coffee shop or layover time in an airport lounge. I have not tried playing with more than two people so I don't know how well that would work

My daughter was bought this game for christmas when she was 8. Her younger sister was able to understand and play it too (at age 7). Once you have read the instructions and understand what each card means and the way the game is played, anyone can enjoy this game. It can last from 5 to 20 minutes. My daughter takes it to school when allowed and it doesn't take long for her to explain how to play to her friends. So it's not too difficult. No reason why boys wouldn't enjoy it too as some of the cards have kings and jesters on, so not completely girly. Adults can join in too. I don't mind joining in when asked to by my daughters. I think it's quite pricey, around a fiver would be more like it,but makes a good present for any young girl over age 6 in my view.

This has been played and played in our family for the last few months - mum, dad, 6 and 8 year olds with lots of friends and family made to play it too. One game takes 5-15 minutes, but my 6 year old would happily play this 20 times a day if we let him - we love it too, but not quite that much! Easy to understand once you've played it a couple of times, and gets the kids practising their addition without them even realising. Combination of tactics and luck, so even the youngest could win to start with and over time he has worked out the tactics as well. (It says it's for age 8+ but 5+ enjoy it provided they can add numbers up to 10.) Comes in small box (and you could just take the cards out to keep it even smaller)so great for taking on holiday.

Well, it is essentially a card game. What you pay for, when buying it, is less the originality of the concept, and more the 79 beautifully illustrated cards.I bought the set as an introduction to card games for my 5-year-old daughter and she enjoyed playing with it.She had no difficulty grasping the rules, or doing the sums, as the later involve only simple addition. However, after having played it a few times in its 2 player-version, she was slightly bored. If played with two players, the game tends to get into an infinite loop, after all the queens have been waken up... I can imagine it being more fun when 3-4 players join in!And also, plastic version of the cards would have added to the set's durability and hence value.

We absolutely love this game bought on the recommendation of a friend with 4 children of varying ages. I have just the one child, boy of 7 and he has now mastered the rules a little too well! What i love about these games is that once you have learnt the rules you can slightly adapt them for younger children or make the game last a little longer etc for older ones. The title of the game may put boys off which would be a shame as it is all about strategy, memory and a bit of maths and my son finds it hilarious when he manages to get a good card from me. Well worth the price for the entertainment it brings. Will be one to take on holiday with us.

I can but endorse previous reviewers comments and try to add some more. Gamewright's card games are based on tradional card games with a twist and obviously a totally different set of cards. Sleeping Queens appealed instinctively to both my 6 year old son and 8 yar old daughter. We play it endlessly and it's one of those games that will be treasured and passed down generations. It's portable and absorbing and never fails to be a popular option from both adults and children's points of view. It's simple but keeps all sorts of people interested in playing. We will certainly be investing in more of Gamewright's games.

This is our favourite family game, we all love it. It's easy to learn and my children, aged 5 and 7, could play it together without help and would be able to teach it to a new player. I love it because of the educational element whereby you can use matching numerical pairs or addition equations to discard cards. We also have Zeus on the Loose which would suit older children with their ten times table additions and subtractions - my 7 year old is just grasping it but prefers Sleeping Queens. Highly recommend this game for families who like to play quick card games together and it would make an excellent gift.

We bought this for our 6 year old for her birthday based on review here and have not been disappointed. Our three children (age 7,6 and 3) picked up the rules very quickly and are always keen to play. This game has appealed in particular to our 3 1/2 year old. Although she cannot do the adding up bits she is fiercely competative and is able to follow all the other rules. It is helping her to learn (slowly) about losing as well especially when playing with her siblings. This is a great game for travel as it packs up small and we have spent many a train journey playing - highly recommend.

We played this with some friends at their house and enjoyed it, so ordered our own set. Good quality cards with lovely designs. Including the friends, all the children (from 5 to 9yo) enjoyed it and so did the adults. And it's the sort of game that children and adults can play equally (so long as your children will let your Knight steal away their favourite Queen, which my two are not always very keen on ;o) ). Players need to hold the cards in their hand, so we also bought the Gamewright Original Little Hands Card Holders, which makes life a lot easier for those with small hands.
