This game runs on the exact same idea as Skylanders 1 and 2 (Giants) by which you have a USB connected PORTAL (a close range scanner) which you place a toy on and that character appears in the game. You then level up that character through story missions, arena battles and challenges. You can swap that character out at any time with another toy and do the same and each one saves the progress for that unique character onto a chip inside the toy!The main difference this time, is that the new "swap force" characters are in two parts; a top and a bottom and the TOP and BOTTOM have separate abilities to learn and unlock. Level progression is saved to the TOP half though!!And it works and it is a lot of fun to interchange different movement styles with different attack styles. There is a total of 250 combinations if you have all swap force characters. These swap force characters are also quite large and about the same size as GIANTS.If you are an experienced Skylander player you will already have lots of character to use and to access all in game areas, but if you are new to all this you may find the massive number of toys excessive, but you don't need them all to complete the game.Pros -- The visuals (while still not next gen) have had a massive improvement and you can tell.- A very long storyline compared to a lot of other games released.- The controls are still spot on, for the most part.- The swap force technique works great.- You can use the GIANTS in the game and it actively encourages it by having chests that only GIANT can open.- Small improvements to the user interface and menu system.- They individual story missions are a lot longer and varied.- We now have challenges in each story mission depending on the movement style of the character. For instance the squid who comes with the start pack can walk up walls and some story missions have sections where you have to move up a wall and avoid objects coming out. While others may involve flying through loops on a time limit and so on. Those are fun, but can be frustrating.- You can also now JUMP which feels natural and adds so much.- You have 'Portal Master' levels for yourself and as you level up you can unlock extra things in game.Cons -- This time they have GATES which can only be opened by a correct combination of swap force characters (i.e fire and water, etc) and challenges requiring a certain movement type. Those are fun, but it does pressure you to now invest in one of each element AND one of each movement style.- Still no bank in game to hold character gold?- Still no online co-op or arena fights?- Yet another new portal is needed.- The ever increasing number of Skylanders.- Still we cannot skip NPC conversations.- Some of the side challenges (like shooting ranges) are just too hard. But ultimately the game is fun, improved upon and enjoyable.

Finally caved and brought Swap Force for my PS4, here's my mini review on all things Skylands:Gameplay: The gameplay of skylanders has remained largely unchanged in its previous two major outings and remains the same this time around bar the addition of 'jump', while not game changing this new feature was a missing piece of the skylanders cake and the mechanics of the gameplay feel complete now that jump is included, it has opened up new ways of designing levels and puzzles and the game has only profited from its introduction. If you are any older than the target demographic for this game then crank the difficulty up to hard from the get go,any lower than that will feel like a walk in the park and take away from this brilliant platformer's experience.Graphics: Now this is more like it, Swap Force on the PS4 is hands down the best and crispest looking game I own on my system, and yes that's comparing it to BF4 and even Killzone, the colours pop and the characters and environments looks amazing, Skylands has never looked better. Running at native 1080p makes a massive difference to gameplay as you can see further in front of you without things fading out or being to pixelated to make out, playing this on PS4 is simply the best and definitive way to play it.Overall: Skylanders Swap Force on PS4 is the best skylanders game to date, it's fun, entertaining, witty and on 'Nightmare' difficulty it's downright hard, the storyline might be the same wishy washy chapters we've seen from the last games but the gameplay and graphics make you forget all about that and just fall in love with playing the game, and after all, isn't that what games are there for?If you are a Skylanders fan or interested in trying out the franchise, there's no better time to jump in.Skylanders: Swap Force - 9/10

In our household we love this game.Great fun for all the family. It's an easy game (even on the hardest setting). When we first started collecting the figures (we bought Giants back in January) I initially thought how can I justify spending £8+ (in the case of Giants it was £15) on what is essentially just a new character. But we did. And we bought more and more. We currently have 48 characters (mostly from Giants but some from Spyro's Adventure and some new ones from Swap force). The kids love it as they love seeing them in action and finding out what they do and say etc... I buy them as I like collecting things.Warning for mums and dads, this can get expensive. On average I would say the characters we have average out at about £10 each (give or take). 48 characters at £10 each is a LOT of money to spend on 3 video games. Saying that, they all look really good. They are well made, durable and sit nicely on the shelf. Kids can play with them too and not break them easily. We have 4 kids, the eldest child is 8 and youngest is 19 months old. Youngest doesn't understand but the 8,6 and 4 year old all know what they are and get excited every-time we get a new one.If you don't have kids, there may not be much appeal but if you do, it is an excuse to play with toys and interact with your kids more, even if it is only playing a video game.Recommend this to anyone with a young family.

If you are buying this for yourself, rather than a child, then you don't need to buy lots of Skylanders. *grins* You can if you wish, but they are only really needed to 'unlock' particular areas. If you want to do most of it on the bare minimum, and have two PS4 controllers, or one PS4 controller and a PS Vita (as I have) then just get 1 Giant figure and buy a few extra figures you like to cover the 4 elements you will still need. When you get to a 'dual gate', log in the other controller and add the missing element to open the gate, then log it out again. If you want to complete all of the 'challenge' areas in Swap Force you will need 8 Swap Force figures (one of each element)at a total cost of around £75+ for the 6 you don't have yet - not great VFM in my opinion. Now - the gameplay: Great fun. It plays a bit like a Diablo/Torchlight clone and you can smash everything as you run around to get more upgrade/shop money. Being able to switch characters at literally any time is great fun and there's a huge selection to choose from in the figure set, so I'm sure everyone will find some that become their favourites.I originally bought it to play with my granddaughter, then discovered it's great fun solo too. Swap Force is much better than Giants and the graphics are greatly improved for the PS4.

Swap Force is a fantastic update to the Skylanders series. There are now absolutely loads of things to do in addition to the main story line such as many different puzzles and mini games. The puzzles are varied and enjoyable and the mini games, which take elements from other popular games, are very enjoyable. One minute you have a 2D platform level like Mario, the next you are sliding down a rainbow collecting coins like Sonic, the next you are blasting baddies with a very fast gun from something like a tank.Pros- Encourages problem solving with a large range of puzzles either as mini games or as part of the main story line- Countless hidden areas to find and explore- A large number of enjoyablemini games- Enjoyable main story line- Characters can be customised to suit the challenge- Good graphics- Improved my son's reading and arithmetic skillsCons- You can't cancel character conversations. This is annoying because they had this feature in Giants.- You need to buy extra characters to do everything in the game.In short, this is the very best game for younger children available. It can get expensive but in play per £ it beats anything else hands down.

Bought this game on launch day and have suffered none of the reported freezing problems except once in around ten 3-4 hour sessions. Our wii is softmodded so we copied the game to the external hard drive and now the game plays from there rather than the disc. The graphics are below average, worse than the 2 previous Skylanders games but there appears to be more going on onscreen so that probably explains things. Levels are longer with more activities and mini games than before. Figures are as you'd expect but the quality of the paintwork has gone downhill tbf. Supply seems to be plentiful tho. Disappointed with the wired portal, a necessity seeing as the old wireless portal won't work with Swap Force.Bottom line,my son loves the game. He'd saved enough money to buy all the figures available except the Series 3 ones (waste of money, in my opinion) and he's not touched his 60 odd older figures since. Lots to do on each level, getting 100% would be a huge challenge. Well worth buying this game.

So if you know Skylanders then you'll know that it's a great way for the company to make money. You buy the game, portal and 3 figures. Feels great for the price. Then you start playing it an realise you need to buy additional characters with different elements in order to get into other areas and make the game more fun/last longer. That aside it's actually fun once you get into. The story unfolds well, the characters you play along side are likeable and the game play keeps you going. The best bit about this game is that all of your old Skylanders will still work despite the rumours saying that they wouldn't. For the price you do get a lot for your money and the game will last a long time, just be prepared to shell out for additional Skylanders. My son loves the game and I have no idea what's going on half the time (but he informs me). Well worth it especially if you liked the other ones. Oh and the Skylanders can all jump now (even the older ones)!.

My boy of 9 has the last two Skylanders and wanted this one desperately (his words). He hasn't played the giants game as much as the first as he thought it two simple without enough levels, I was reluctant to buy this one but succumb to his pleading. The big difference is the characters can be body swapped, legs and heads can be swapped so the skylander can perform different, i.e quick legs mean the character will move quicker, simple. Not all the characters that you buy are swappable, make sure you check before you buy the characters. they have swap on the box.The bodies are connected by a magnet, very clever how the game knows what going on.The game it self is pretty much the same as the last two installments,I liked the idea that the old Skylanders can be used on the game but they don't have the swap feature which will mean more characters being purchased, more figures sitting near the console and less money in my wallet. My boy also has the

You can't argue with Skylanders as being a great product for kids. Not only is it a digital game that they can play on their consoles but it also has the physical collecting aspect with the figures. Good stuff. This is similar to the original Skylanders but instead has figures that come apart at the waist so that you can swap and combine them to create a hero that you want to play with in game. It still amuses me seeing my character running around on octopus legs! The games itself is a bigger and better version of the original Skylanders with more outlandish graphics, storyline and set pieces. It really is quite a joy to play and the swapping of character parts becomes crucial later on to completing certain tasks and puzzles. If you liked the original Skylanders, you'll love this. It's like Skylanders on an Energy Drink!!

I panicked after reading some early reviews about all the freezing etc as we had pre ordered this for my son's 6th birthday the following week. He is Skylanders mad, despite never having the Giants or Spyro games, so I was horrified at the thought of him being disappointed on his big day. I followed previous advice about keeping the portal away from the console, and our portal is kept in the alcove so there is a brick wall between it and the Wii. It works perfectly, not one single issue. My son is totally made up with it, and my 3 year old also plays with the Skylanders too like action figures! The story mode in 2-player is great as it teaches them to work together as a team and solve problems.I can't compare it to the previous games, but I am impressed with this and very glad we bought it for one happy little boy!

Swap force is a good game in the skylanders franchise and is not a disappoint unlike giants swap force adds in a whole new system and 2 whole new gates in play. One of the two gates is called the swap gate basically when you find a symbol at the bottom of a swap character is that symbol matches the one in play you can play that minigame. The Symbols are climb, Rocket, Teleport, Dig, Speed, Sneak, spin and Bounce. The other gate is a two elemental gate you can either swap a skylander to match the two elements on the gate using the swap skylanders or in multiplayer with each player being the different element. The Levels are extremely longer especially if you are like me who wants to collect everything and the swap zone challenges are also hard.Overall Swap force is a good well made game and the best so far.

Bought for my girls aged 7 and 9 and they love Skylanders. Each starter pack has a different game, characters and portal. You place characters on the portal and they appear in the game. They've found characters from Spyro's adventure do work with this portal (not sure about the other way around though). Portal plugs in to USB slot on PS3 via a cable. Characters have a magnetised middle (large characters only) and you can swap their top and bottom halves.I did look at additional characters on Amazon but they were so expensive, I ended up popping into CEX and picked up about 35 characters for £38 (for the 3 Skylanders games they have now). Lots of gameplay, fun to swap characters to get to different areas and hours of entertainment. Would recommend.

My 6 year old loves it, compatible with all figured from previous versions. Figures get new powers keeping you interested and level and charactures are quirky. Good the way my boys play with the little models away from the game itself. This has took gaming to a different level, not surprised it's won so many awards. I enjoyed playing this alongside him and earning upgrades amongst the hours of play. The whole kit cost £20 but you'll get sucked into buying more. There's value in it tho' the swap force is a good concept, giving extend play, but look out for old spiros adventures charactures that you can pick up for next to nothing.Great game, look out for the new version shortly.Which I think we'll be buying.
