This nifty compass is very well designed to prevent you from getting lost. I luckily had it with me this summer when I went hiking in the States and since the trails had been quite badly damaged by Hurricane Irene, some of the trees that used to have trail markers on them were down, so my friend and I had to resort to some good old compass reading and after we consulted the map and figured out the deviation for magnetic North, we were already headed in the right direction and soon enough found a trail marker (what a relief that was!).I recommend it, because it has very detailed numbers on it and you can be very exact about the direction you want to keep. Getting bearings on it is not difficult, once you get the hang of it, and the magnifying lens is a great addition because it helps you see the details on the map with more accuracy. It also has a small gap at the top where you can add your own string or lace and put it around your neck so as not to lose it or always have it handy.A great Silva product at a price that reflects its reliability. After all, finding your way is priceless!

Very simply put, I have had a little time with this compass and it does everything I could expect at a good value price. This is more than adequate and certainly adequate for the Moor. On that atrocious pun I will bow out.UPDATE: I have had this compass for three years now and have only had to replace it because I was a klutz and shut my car door on the edge of the baseplate on a Sunday evening after the walk! I ordered a replacement the next day and got it (no special delivery) that Thursday. Absolutely top service and the replacement is just as ideal. (The original still works well and is used back in school)This is a superb compass - you won't need another, unless you want to treat yourself to one of the fancy £50+ prismatic ones to make taking bearings a bit quicker! It has so many simple features done well: long baseplate, 1:25000 Romer markings on top, easy to use Right-to-Left scale for the Romer, internal orientation lines on the baseplate to help set bearings, magnifier, and .... Robust!!

You cannot go wrong with Silva. They epitomise quality when it comes to good 'old fashioned' navigational equipment. It is the only product I can recommend to the serious hillwalker/mountaineerThe product quality is top notch in both the material and quality of operation. The plastic used is crystal clear even after years of careful use and the compass needle housing very sound. Only after an awful lot of use might a worrying bubble appear in the liquid, however this (while it might seem disconcerting) does not affect the compass in any way - in my experience. The markings too are crystal clear and in time they do begin to fade, but are still readable even when this happens. The critical markings are luminous and can be used in the dark by an experienced navigator. The product includes a red carry string so that the compass can be worn around the neck, but I avoid doing this as it tends to bump around a lot and get tangled.Overall, a fabulous product

I like this Silva compass for two main reasons: the long baseplate making it easier to take bearings between two points that are a bit far apart on the map; and the romer scale along the top increases from 0 to 10 from right to left. At first glance this seems strange, but when you use it to get a grid reference off the map, it is apparent that the point you are looking at is at the top right hand corner of the base plate when using the 1:25 000 scale), and it is easy to read off the figures for northings and eastings.Other good reasons to get this Silva are the little magnifying glass which helps you to establish exactly how that footpath cross the farm yard; the non slip feet; the luminous north marker etc.Yes you can compasses cheaper, but not for a compass which is as practical and feature packed as this one.

I acquired a Silva compass (a previous version of the 4-360) when I first became a Scout more than 50 years ago and had used it regularly since. However I lost it over this last winter and needed a replacement. Having read a lot of reviews about compasses including this this one I decided I had to spend the money and get a Silva one. There are cheaper compasses available but none seemed to get close to the quality and value for money of the Silva 4-360. It does the job I require perfectly. It shows me which direction I am walking in, helps me pinpoint landmarks on OS maps, and helps with distances on maps. I thought my old one couldn't have been bettered for general walking purposes, but Silva seem to have improved a great product. I could not ask for more really and would recommend it to anyone walking anywhere.

Feature packed, along with a good map you're away! Clearly marked in degree's (the other military type has Mils too) the liquid damped needle is accurate and reliable - as long as you keep it away from ferrous, magnetic objects or power lines! The 3 romers make for accurate grid reference taking on 1:25,000(2 1/2" to 1 mile); 1:50,000(1 1/4" to 1 mile) & 1:63,000(the old 1" to 1mile) scales. The magnifier is useful when looking at fine detail and the luminous markings are used in the dark. A recessed shaped hole for a neck string is well positioned and there are cm & inch graduations around the edges. Full info on useage can be found on web sites including Silva's own.The best of the best! You don't really need a sighting compass and this is more robust.

This is my 3rd Silva compass. Had to order a third one after the one I'm using has somehow damaged ? It's not pointing to North anymore. This compass is really easy to use and the Romer scale is indeed very useful. Help me tremendously when trying to determine my grid ref position. Even my colleague who is an ex Army was impressed on the ease of use of this compass.I always carry 2 whenever I'm out on hiking trip just incase one of them got damaged or sometimes when I have doubt whether the compass is actually pointing to the right direction I will then just whipped out the second one just to be sure.I'm impressed as well with the speed of delivery. Ordered it yesterday late afternoon and today morning it's already on my desk.Impressive.

An excellent product used in conjuction with a map. I do a lot of hiking and this compass is extremely easy to read. It has a Romer scale which can be used to give an exact grid reference on an Ordnance Survey Ireland Discovery map (1:50000). I really have no complaints about the item.I find it absurd that I was compelled to pay Irish VAT when purchasing from Amazon UK instead of the much lower British VAT rate, Amazon is the only online company that I've come across that operates this policy. I sincerely hope that Irish Revenue receives all of this VAT and it doesn't go to the UK. This, along with the fact that Irish customers have to pay for postage makes the item quite expensive.

A perfect product.I purchased this prior to a long period of lots and lots of mountain climbing. Firstly the compass is finished well and made of high quality materials. It is a great size and very sturdy with a strong lanyard. The compass is also packed full of all the great Silva features including 3 different roamer scales, measuring marks, a magnifying centre, rubber feet, adjustable bezel and lanyard among many others. It also very accurate and one of the best compasses for civilian navigation on the market.Overall i couldn't fault the compass, it does everything you could need to do and more.

Ok, so I was debating on this purchase for a while. I mean, you can pick up a compass for a few pound so why pay £25. But I was planning the route for the 3 peaks, so I went ahead and ordered one.And am I pleased I did! The fluidity of the needle and the squared edges on the base plate make for such accuracy when working out bearings, grid references and distance. Rubber feet prevent slipping during use on maps, and the glow in the dark markings are just where they need to be for use during low light or night.I would definitely get one of these if you have kids doing scout or D of E expeditions.

Works fine as expected but as you can see from the picture if you enlarge it there seems to be - to me anyway, a design flaw. The measuring grids seem designed to measure from the top right corner of a grid square. Is this a requirement of southern hemisphere maps? If you use them to measure from the bottom left corner of a grid square as I would want to the numbers are upside down. Of course you can turn the map or the compass upside down but I'd prefer the numbers and the map text to orient the same way when I'm measuring. Is there a northern hemisphere version?

The compass arrived just in time for my walking holiday to the Lake District. Before ordering this model I had a good browse around and, although it was a bit more expensieve than what I was hoping to spend, it had great reviews, good credentials and seemed exactly what I needed. I don't regret buying it one bit as it's sturdy and reliable (I like that it glows in the dark) and it's lightweight, so it's not pulling on your neck as you walk. Also, it's a good investment as I'm not expecting to buy another one for a very long time, if ever.

Interesting that one scout leader reviewer says that there is a 2 degree error with this compass. Typically in the UK there is a approximate variable 2 degree deviation between magnetic and true north. I haven't seen this on land maps but they are common on marine charts and they do vary continuously but there are ways to calculate this shift depending on location. So basically if there was no deviation, I would then think that there was a fault with the unit :-)

This is an excellent compass at home anywhere in the uk. I have purchased compasses costing four times as much but always come back to the Silva for its clear baseplate and simple operation. Navigation can be a tricky business especially when the weather is bad, that’s when you need a simple to use accurate and reliable compass. I would recommend the Silva Expedition 4-360 without reservation. Also first class for DofE will take you from Bronze to Gold.

Out of all the compasses you might try - this will turn out to be the best if you are a serious navigator.I teach mountain navigation and use these on my courses and recommend their use. Why? Not because anyone pays me to recommend them - simply that when it matters - when you need something to work - this is what you want. No one gets lost in clear weather or daylight so get yourself something that will perform conistently under pressure.
