I don't go in for games based on the reviews of gaming sites or on hype alone, so this review is from a non-biased perspective. Having played only SH2 and SH4: The Room before, I'll compare my experiences with Homecoming to my experiences with these previous installments. However I am not a huge Silent Hill fan, so I'll try to make this review as non-biased as possible. The first thing that must be said about Homecoming is that, no matter what the gaming websites have said, it is creepy. Not to the extent of SH2, I'll admit - but as those who've played it will know, that is a cult classic in regards to its ability to play with your mind.Homecoming maintains SH2's creepy piano-based music and sound effects; one of the truly excellent features of the series as it is one of the main reasons for its fear factor. I say it's not as creepy as SH2 because Double Helix has opted for a higher amount of enemies rather than taunting you with the possibility of attack for prolonged periods of time. Many of the old SH2 enemies return (including a cameo appearance by an old fan favourite), however the 'ghosts' from The Room have thankfully returned to their grave for the latest journey into the foggy streets of Silent Hill. But this time around, Double Helix has opted to try out a few new variants that will attempt to cut your exploration short; and all of them are just as screwed up and twisted as their older friends. The atmosphere is Homecoming is difficult to describe, but I'll try and sum it up in one word: intense. The constantly expanding fog, the streets that never seem to end, the crackle of your radio as a nurse twitches violently from behind you are partly what makes Silent Hill so popular. The slime-ridden sewers, the old-fashioned furniture of the Shepherd House, the rusty gears that turn far beneath you as you descend into Hell itself...the contrast is vast and it allows an excellent change in scenery as you progress through the game.At times you will find yourself exploring the rapidly decaying Lakeview Hotel from SH2, and at others you will be working your way around a huge boiler room. There are plenty of references to SH2, and a few from The Room (I'm unaware of the locations from the original or SH3), which alone should give fans of the series a reason to try this game.Much like The Room, Homecoming takes place in two locations: Shepherds Glen and, of course, Silent Hill. The two areas are interchanged nicely, although they have a lot in common (fog, twisted creatures etc). The improved graphics increase the intensity of the atmosphere, and seeing the walls peel away to reveal the Otherworld was impressive (it seems the film has actually inspired a future installment of the franchise). Whilst not up to par with Bioshock, Gears of War or the upcoming Resident Evil 5, they were still nice to look at and made the experience a little more unsettling.Combat isn't hugely different from previous Silent Hill games, but it has evolved to fit with the next-gen fighting formula. Since Alex is a competent soldier, he is more capable at taking down creatures by avoiding their attacks and slamming a pipe into their head when the opportunity arives. Some may find the ability to counter-attack and aim with weapons features that result in an easier gaming experience, but I suggest that rather than trusting other people's views on this you decide for yourself.Like the second game, Homecoming makes good use of puzzles that range from very easy to the insanely difficult. It wouldn't be Silent Hill without them, and makes a change from the exploration and combat segments in the game. The plot - for which the game has been given a lot of criticism - isn't as bad as it has been made out to be. It's not massively original, but it has a nice twist that I personally didn't expect. I won't say much in order to prevent spoilers, but what I will say is that things aren't quite what they seem when you first fire up the game and begin your search for your brother, Josh.My main problems with the game weren't really that big a deal. At one instance a became sealed off in a room, apparently having walked into a glitch where there was no escape, and I had to reload from my last save point. The second is to do with difficulty; half-way through the game I was doing everything I could to survive, having run out of medi-kits and ammunition, but by the end of the game I was loaded with health bottles and overly powerful weapons. It didn't create much of a problem in turns of how much fun I had, but it did present less of a challenge as the game came to a close. My advice would be to buy Homecoming, or rent it if you are still a little unsure. The game retains the multiple endings from the other installments, and the alterations between the 'normal' world and the Otherworld makes it feel like 2 games in one. Sure, it's not as intense as Silent Hill 2, but that may be because I'm not 15 anymore. It's an intensely fun (if you can call it that) experience that lasts a decent amount of time - roughly 12-15 hours for your first run-through - and one that is guaranteed to make you ask the question: just who the hell thinks up these twisted creatures standing in front of me?!

I have finished this game about a day ago and yes I do have mixed feelings of this chapter in the Silent Hill games but most are positive. This review is going to be based on my own personal opinion and experience of the game there will also be no spoilers in this review either. You play as your typical Silent Hill character a young male who has a similar dress sense to James from SH2 lol (Although the game puts him at 22 years of age that always bugged me as he looks older in the game). He must try to find his Brother throughout the game and also his dad and the what happened to the other inhabitents of Shepards Glenn not Silent Hill straight off.A good part of this game is based in ShepardsGlenn it's only as you peice together the story Silent Hill then makes it's mark. The game has been taken over by an American developer Double Helix as opposed to the Japanese Team Silent and what do I think?I think they have done an excellent job okay so some of the atmosphere has been dumbed down for that reason but it's still a scary game with the lights out and it still has the excellently haunting soundtrack and industrial sounds and creature noises all present and correct. The creatures themselves are groteusqe to behold and designed excellently very convincing animation and the bosses well they are the stars of the game as always.I have to say this isn't the combat heavy game that a lot of people are saying it is there are still parts of the game where monsters are evenly spread out in fact some parts take a while before you encounter anything to fight so therefore it still retains a lot of the atmosphere from the other games. Also a lot of people complained the game is too dark in places well maybe they had a problem with there brightness or something because I could see everything fine even in the dark areas there are some dark bits but then it's a silent hill game surprisingly.I thurougly enjoyed this installment and hope double Helix or Team Silent decide to make another one as this series has always been about the story and atmosphere and the story to this one whilst not very original is still brilliant!!Now for the pros and cons...................Pros*Great enemy design and level design graphics look amazing in places*The soundtrack is as awsome as always I can't rememeber the guys name but credit goes to him yet again*Great beleivable characters and great storyline*A tense atmosphere that keeps going throught and brilliant boss battles*Saves are always near so you can save the game between major parts the game even has a checkpoint system so if you day and you didn't save it for a while you can start of from the last checkpoint*One thing that annoyed me about the other games was that ammo was plentyfull making the games far too easy even on a hard difficulty not so in this game limited ammo more so for the harder difficulty and limited life so this time it feels like a forced survival horror brilliant!!*Some of the puzzles are hard to work out at first but are never so difficult that you get stuck good old feindish puzzles*This game has a very adult theme thus the 18 certificate and there are parts of the game that will make you go "Whoa!!!!" so it's far darker this timeConsI have to say for me these are based on the frustrating parts of the game that definately need improving for the next one.*NPC's can be a bit dumb and certainly a bit useless when fighting enemys in the game Double Helix could have made them more intelligent*The combat now I know silent hill's combat has never been it's strong point and I know they have tried to revamp it for this one by making Alex an ex soldier so he is well trained in combat but it does make taking out most enemys slightly easy and dodging as well (you will need to do this a lot as if you don't enemys will zap away your life pretty quickly especially the nurses)I like the change in combat but you can take out most enemys with one basic weapon but you will find out what that is for yourself*Combat in small corridors is a real pain in the bum sometimes as you either hit the wall or you can never dodge around an enemy to get a decent hit in*For some reason you may get to a room with five enemies for example but each one takes it in turns to fight you I had a bit where I was fighting five nurses and they all politly stood there whilst I took each one out at a time but it's the same if you get to a mixture of enemies as well very odd AI!!*I thought this game was pretty short about 8 hours in total on my first play I didn't want it to end*The graphics were so so great in places and PS2 standared in others this is the next generation for crying out loud!!My overall conclusion is this is a brilliant addition to the silent hill games Double Helix have not ruined the series they have just created a silent hill game in there style and it's still tense and atmospheric with great enemys and bosses iffy combat but like I said before it's not silent hills strong point the other things I described are!!If your a fan buy it just to see and judge for yourself!!

I imported this from the states as I couldn't wait to play it and I have to say, whilst I have a few reservations with the game play, the overall game is great. Not sure what the UK version will look like as I believe the developers are having to tame it down for a gerneal release over here, but this version is whacked - like really sick. Think Saw meets Hostel and you'll be close.Double Helix - the developers - have gone for a more direct terror than the psychologically disturbing games of the past. That's not too say it isn't creepy - you'll be thinking there's a freaky monster right behind you thanks to the music and sound effets when there is really nothing there - this keeps you on your toes and your heart rate well and truly elevated, but veteran Silent Hill fans will definitely notice a more direct horror.I won't include any spoilers in here, but prepare yourselves for some shocks! You play Alex Shepherd - returning veteran and all round wholesome american - apparently....He comes home after a brief stay in hospital concerned from the nightmares he has been having about his younger brother Joshua. The opening sequence is scary man - strapped to a hospital guerney seeing glimpses of messed up surgery going on in the rooms I pass - hearing screams and shouts for help and Alex's continued shouts of: "Where am I" and "What's going on".Alex gets wheeled into a surgery room and then - tapping X like a mad man - he breaks his bonds; free to now explore this messed up place.First level is a bit pedestrian and has numerous rip-offs from Silent Hill 2 (which keep occurring throughout the game) but believe me, it gets a whole lot worse - by which of course I mean better...So, how does it look? Initially I wasn't too impressed with the grpahics - same obscuring fog and darkness and all that, but the more I played the more I began to appreciate just how good looking (in a messed up way) this game is. There isn't anything quite as disturbing as say the Church or Hospital in Silent Hill 3 (I shudder to remember the walls pulsating red darkness and a brief glimpse of a monster up close and personal before everything went black) but it is unsettling. It feels very, hellish? Yea, that's the right word - the alternate versions of the game (which transition with the peeling effect from the film - looks great!) are seething with heat, giant fans and pulsating magma rock. Seriously feels like you are somewhere you really do not want to be - oh, and particular attention should be directed to the alternate Shepherd Home - it's just - messed up!!!It's a mix between SH2 and 3 (darkness only slightly alleviated by flashlight) and SH4 (static-hazy light effects). The characters looked good - lip-syncing is a bit off at times - but they do look good.Lighting is excellent with dynamic shadows haunting every corner going - and the noise effect is there which lends the game a very dirty and unpolished look - exactly the way Silent Hill should look.Like the 4th game there isn't much Silent Hill in this installment. Most of the action takes place in or around Alex's hometown of Shepherd's Glen. This I found regrettable as I do miss feeling like I'm in Silent hill - you know how games 1 and 2 made you feel running around the streets and walking into buildings - there's a bit of that toward the latter part of the game but not enough. However, it by no means ruins the game - I just miss it, that's all.The reason I didn't give this game 5 stars for fun is because of the difficulty level. Even on Normal if you don't pay attention to what you're doing you will die - again and again. My first play though I gave up trying NOT to use Continues (only to find at the end of the game that there's no stats!!!!) and ended up with hardly any ammo and no health items! There are more than enough health items there - just make sure you find them all.Ammos is limited to each gun which can sometimes be annoying and I guarantee that everytime you hear a Needler you'll groan - just remember to dodge and swing! Oh - and look out for the cool red-gashes you inflict on the monsters - nice touch! The boss fights are excellent and the design of them is amazing - real messed up stuff. The second one you fight - Scarlet - is really creepy - easy to kill providing you know when to dodge and the scene before the fight is classic Silent Hill stuff. It all wraps itself up suitably (and with an extra scene at the end if you find all the photos and kids drawings) depending on the choices you make in the second half of the game - these determine the ending you get. That is providing you make it to the ending - a word of advise - make sure you have full ammo for the last boss fight - phew!!!!!Overall a real worthy Silent Hill game; made of the stuff of sheer terror - self-mutilation and torture on top of all the other stuff) with an unwitting hero that might not be all he appears...Oh, almost forgot - Pyramid Head turns up to the party as well - you can't fight him unfortunately, but both scenes with him - whilst brief - are great...roll on Silent Hill 666....

Silent Hill Homecoming is the second game in the series to be developed by an American software company. Origins was a disaster in my opinion and pales in comparison to the superb Silent Hill 2. The good news about Homecoming is that it is better than Origins but regretably falls short of the mark set by Team Silent in the terrifying Silent Hill 2 (see my previous review).Double Helix have tried to create a game that sticks to the psychological roots of the second game and to an extent they succeed. Without giving the plot away, they are a bit heavy handed with things and not as subtle in the way that they develop the player's empathy with the characters plight.Unlike in previous games you don't get to do too much exploring of the town. Most of the action, in fact, takes place in Shepherd's Glen. The protagonist Alex is returning from Hospital (an injured soldier) and he is looking for his missing brother. Persuit(of a family member/loved one) is, of course a familiar theme from Silent Hill and the later film. With regard to the film, the game does borrow a lot from some of the imagery and special effects. For example, the otherworld transitions where the textures peel away and rise up to create a hellish environment. Also, the dubious appearance of Pyramid Head on 2 occasions in the game. Many enthusiasts of Silent Hill folklore queried his appearance in the film and doubtless they will in the game. The story itself is engaging but not as satisfying as Silent Hill 2. The ending, in particular, being very disappointing. The interactions with weird characters are all there but this time you can choose questions, seemingly influencing the direction of conversation. However, the outcome of the conversations is ultimately the same. You do get to make moral choices in the game and these do impact on the ending.Gameplay is rewarding and the ability of Alex to defend, counter and use strong or fast attacks gives the combat a much needed overhaul. The ability to control the camera angle is also useful and makes combat and exploring far easier. Credit should be given for this improvement in the game's mechanics.Graphically, the game falls short of next generation standards. Some of the environments - particularly in the Chapter where you are exploring an abandoned hotel were very last generation. I found the textures very bland and a little lazy in places. Walking through several rooms with the same furniture becomes tedious after a while. However, there were some examples of excellence: The chapter 'Hell Descent' had some very effective graphics and effects.Silent Hill would not be complete without monsters. The monsters are actually quite well done and many are very imaginative - particularly some of the end of level bosses. However they are more grotesque than frightening and reminded me of Doom 3 - particularly the spider like creatures walking with razor bladed legs. During combat, monsters show injuries when struck by weapons which was quite a good touch on the part of the developers. The music was composed by the famed composer of Team Silent but regretably you get a sense that his heart was not in it. I imagine him sitting in a room alone composing often haunting melodies but I don't get the sense that he was as immersed as he was in earlier projects with his friends from the original Konmami team. Sound effects are very good and create a strong and often unsettling atmosphere.Overall the game is enjoyable and is closer to Silent Hill than Origins but it is not the game it could have been or indeed should have been. The way that previous games succeeded was through an understanding of what makes us feel unsettled as human beings. James'plight was far more believable, far more terrifying and far more tragic. The grotesque creatures in Silent Hill 2 were disturbing in a subtle way but in this game they are far more apparently shocking and don't have a connection (through imagery) with the charcter. What I mean is that in Silent Hill 2, pyramid Head by way of example is a manifestation of James' guilt. In Homecoming the monsters are just there. As the game reaches its conclusion, the developers take things down a more conventional modern day film horror root (think Saw) and at this point, I think they really lost track of what Silent Hill is all about. The game degenerates into a bit of gore fest and I would imagine that this has lead to the substantial delay in the UK releaseIn summary, Homecoming is a good effort by the American Developers but they have a lot to learn about psychological horror. I'm not sure why Team Silent were not given the title but it was a big mistake on the part of Konami - especially with the arrival of Resident Evil 5 in 2009. Silent Hill was more of a thinker's game and in this respect Double Helix missed the point.Silent Hill Homecoming is a good game and enjoyable to play but it won't live up to the expectaions of the fans. It won't make many new fans and it certainly won't steal Capcom's thunder!

Oddly, Silent Hill Homecoming isn't developed by Team Silent (responsible for the seminal parts 1-4). Instead duties have been given to Double Helix, who have produced a solid but flawed entry to the series. From the nightmare opening, Silent Hill's bleak atmosphere is well captured. The plot is typical, a lone protagonist with a troubled past. Homecoming's charcater is Alex Shepherd, returning home to learn his brother Josh has gone missing. He's one of many reported from Shepherds Glen and neighbouring town Silent Hill. This leads Alex to search both towns, and literally the depths of hell to unravel the mystery. The visual style is impressive, with the distinct grainy look of the series preserved, despite moving to HD. Walking the town is incredibly eerie, with thick fog choking the air. The desolate streets reinforce the fact something is very wrong. Double Helix has taken visual inspiration from the Silent Hill movie, with an identical shift between 'worlds', complete with sirens. The use of music is also effective, with a haunting score by series composer Akira Yamaoka. Sound effects are stomach churning, and voice acting is solid throughout.Homecomings puzzles are familiar, probably because they havent progressed since the PSOne original. They mainly consist of obscure fetch quests or frustrating puzzles. Typical examples include finding the combination to a keypad, or rewiring a fuse box.Another stale feature is the lack of save functions. Rather than use an auto save, Homecoming favours save points, located throughout the game. These are usually few and far between, making the game unnecessarily difficult. With a maximum of 5 save slots, it can affect gameplay. Especially with limited items and health. Death causes a restart of the immediate area, which does help. The only major overhaul is the combat; coincidentally Homecomings biggest problem. Whereas previous games made fighting a last resort, Shepherd can wield a fire axe with brutal efficency. This means the number of enemies is significantly greater. Confrontations are mostly unavoidable. It's the law of diminishing returns, and removes any real threat, or potential scares. The collision detection is horrendous, especially during boss battles. Fighting a 15 foot porcelain doll with a lead pipe soon becomes a glitch filled mess.Firearm controls are noticeably improved, taking inspiration from Resident Evil. This weapon proficency is linked to the character, a former soldier. But the inclusion of QTE's is completely unnecessary, and shoddily applied.Despite a faithful collection of enemies (nurses, smogs etc), there is some needless recycling. Pyramid Head makes a cameo, despite being a manifestation of the character in Silent Hill 2. So his inclusion makes no sense, and feels like a desperate attempt at wish fulfilment.A collection of photos are hidden throughout the game. Accessing them all unlocks an additional scene during the credits. In typical Silent Hill fashion, there are numerous endings to the game, based on decisions made. New costumes and weapons are available on a second play, extending longevity. On the whole, Homecoming is a good, not great Silent Hill game. The reigns should be handed back to Team Silent for a 'true' sequel; one that places psychological terror above repetitive combat.

I'm relatively new to the Silent Hill series of games, and before I played this had only played a little of the first Silent Hill many years ago.I found even as someone new to the series, that there wasn't any confusion as to what was happening, as I thought their would be many references to previous games. The story seemed to be relatively independent from the series as best a newcomer could see, although seeing the movie did give me a little more pre-insight before playing as to what was happening in certain parts. The creators of the game have put a lot of stock in the atmospheric suspense feel that surrounds the entirety of the gameplay, once you get by your first few cringe worthy kills, you then begin to relax and enjoy the game. But be warned ! The frights come thick and fast early on, so if you're a jumper then you'll have plenty to jump at, guaranteed. The story was simple yet made sense as it gave you one clear objective throughout the game, which was a good direction I felt. Of course there are sub objectives throughout the game, but it's all for the purpose of why your character has returned home in the first place, which is to find his brother.Gameplay-The gameplay itself was top notch in all honesty, the combat controls were quick and effective and dodging attacks is harder than it may seem at times, but the lack of gameplay lag helps this come across better when playing and makes it less frustrating than it might well have been. The camera angles themselves were great. As most people know this can be a major undoing in most games , but i'm pleased to say that there has been obvious care and attention payed on this part, and as a result you won't be stuck with just a view of a wall whilst mid-combat.I did feel the game could have been slightly longer, but nowadays this is probably the average length of a game. The only reason I don't give this game a 5 star rating is because like I said before, I felt it was a little short, and also about halfway through the game you realise that you've somehow become desensitized to all the things that made your heart race, and were making you hold your breath earlier in the game. This for me could have possibly been handled better by the game creators, by throwing a few things out from left-field more often to keep the gamer on his or her toes more, instead of paying more attention to the puzzle side of things. This of course is an important part of the game which i'm not disputing, but when playing a horror suspense game, I would like a few more thrills for my money. All in all though I would recommend this to most gamers who are in to all kinds of games, as this is not necessarily my normal choice of game but am still pleased I bought it, and now will probably buy more in the future of the same genre because of this one game.

Silent Hill Homecoming is the long running survival horror series' first game on next gen consoles. Now I have to admit this was the first Silent Hill game I've played through. Silent Hill veterans will tell you that Silent Hill 2 was the best of the series when Team Silent were behind the game. Now with Double Helix at the helm can the survival horror return to its former glories? The survival horror genre is unique in that its objective is to unsettle a gamer. This in recent times the horror aspect has taken a back seat in favour of a more action orientated game for example Resident Evil 5. Silent Hill is genuinely disturbing as one may expect from its horrendous creatures you will have to face to the macabre, downright depressing setting their feels as if there is no hope or escape. The story is driven quite well with good voice acting and a storyline that is interesting and in which you will have to make dialogue choices in which decisions will ultimately guide you to one of the games possible five endings. The options are not Mass Effect or Fallout 3 kind of deep but is a nice additon all the same. One of the main sticking points may well be the combat which can be clunky at times. Having said that you will encounter a variety of weapons throughout the game from steel pipes, to rifles to an old favourite in the shotgun. Depending on what difficulty you play the game on ammunition is scarce this isn't neccesarily a bad thing as it helps ratchet up the tension. There are also glitches within the game which you can exploit to your advantage as enemies cannot make it through certain places on the map, say if you have to duck under an object your enemy will just stand there to be slain at your mercy. This takes away some of the scare factor in the sense that sometimes you can run for cover.Silent Hill comes with no online play modes but was always a game crafted to a single player experience, the game also has replayabilty in mind with multiple endings.---Summary---Graphics 9 Sharp and detailed most of the timeSound 10 The voice acting is good but the general sound within the game is excellentGameplay 7 Clumsy combat at times but it worksLifespan 7 Is worth more than one playthrough for the different endings and collectiblesSilent Hill Homecoming isn't the scariest thing going as it might well have been nine, ten years ago. However as far as the horror in survival horror goes this does the job. It won't blow you away but if you're becoming tired of everyday shooters and want to try something a little diffferent this may well be the game for you. 8/10. John Mitchell.

...to admit I was a bit scared. Only a little bit though.OK, I'm not one of these Gaming Guru's with his own vibro-chair and who leaves the house once a week only to stock up on canned food - just in case it all comes true - but I reckon I can give a good opinion of this game.First of all, this is your quintessential puzzle-solving, monster-bashing game, so if you're not really into cracking riddles and feel that `monsters are people too' and therefore shouldn't be clubbed until limp, then this isn't your stop. However, if you're like me: a little bit geeky when no-one's looking, a little bit stubborn and highly susceptible to all things addictive, then dip your hand into your wallet, write off a couple of days, stock up on a potentially illegal amount of Pro-Plus and be prepared to not be able to switch this game off for ten-to-twelve hour sessions. What I never really liked about these sorts of games (other than acting quality that wouldn't seem out of place in an 'Art Film') was their general clumsiness. There never really seemed to be much manoeuvrability about the characters and confrontations with enemies/monsters usually consisted of a repeated clumping-by-blunt-instrument. In Silent Hill: Homecoming, there seems to be an extra level of dynamacy - the 'dodge' button actually allows you to duck-and-weave and fight reactively. You can read the battle and act and counteract accordingly. This creates a higher level of control and agility and a three-dimensional action platform which brings an extra element of skill to the game. The general story line seemed to flow pretty well, which I think lends itself to the fact that you can't turn the thing off. The graphics are phenomenal, both in-game and cut-scenes and the maps, or 'worlds' are pretty extensive......although there was still a hell of a lot of the whole, "The lock on this door is busted. It won't open".One thing that I was a little bit disappointed with though was the strength of the puzzles. The earlier games had me sweating over riddles for hours - or at least until I felt warm trails of puss oozing from my ears - but for this game, they seemed a little bit tame. I put that down to one of two things: 1) I'm exceptionally intelligent, more-so than the writers. Or more than likely 2) they've `dumbed' the game down and toned the fighting up in order to suit the mass-market.Either way though this game comes highly recommended. I know I get my money's worth when I have to sleep for 48 hours straight, after completion.

Let me just say first that I did not play any previous Silent Hill games, but would really like to. But, I am, however a big horror fan.Story: The story in this game does NOT follow the movie, only some monsters are borrowed from that. You play Alex Shepard on his quest to return hoome and find his missing brother Joshua. The story has great twists and is very interesting, especially to people who enjoy a good psycological thriller. You can choose different diologue options when speaking to characters, but only 3 parts in the game actually determine which ending you get. It's worth mentioning the the notes you pick up in the game are worth reading.Graphics: This is a 2008 game. It looks decent, now. The mood and atmosphere is still great though. Excellent monster designs!!!Sound: Nothing to complain about. Monsters and voice acting are good.Gameplay: This is different from other Silent Hill games. You have a light attack, heavy attack, and a block. The combat in the game is good, you will find very few guns and ammo and will need to mostly use melee weapons. The enimies are tough and you don't want to leave them behind for fear they will catch up to you. The low ammo and health is what makes this game slightly scary sometimes. The combat can get repetitive and it is possible to mess up your entire game by using alot of healing items and then not having enough for certian parts of the game. That adds to scry factor, but doesn't make you too happy when it happens. Tip: keep multiple save files!!Boss fights are awesome and super demented! There is also alot of basic problem solving in the game, which is very enjoyable and should be familiar to anyone who has play survival horror games. I did find the puzzles to be an issue, though. They range from super easy to the most impossible thing ever. You could sit for an extremely long time trying to figure out the end puzzle, it is mostly impossible without a guide.Value: If you like horror it's definatly worth it for $20. There are different endings to unlock and for getting the different endings you get different costumes and weapons to use during the game. You also collect clild's drawings, serums, and pictures as collectables. There are no trophies on PS3. The drawings and pictures are nice to look at though for slight backstory and dementedness.Overall: Horror fan? Get this game. A good horror game, not the best, not the scariest, but very good.8/10

First off this gets 4 stars because of the amount of backtracking, otherwise I would have given it 5 stars.. Even knowing exactly what you're doing and using the infinite Laser Gun it would take over 3 hours to complete I'm guessing!!! I've finished every Silent Hill from 2, well I never beat the last boss on SH3 the woman who eats what looks like a Baby featus and turns into a Giant female Head!First off I don't get the hate the game gets, or how 'Alex' is too powerful in Combat(Enemies can kill you in 3 hits, Nurses can kill you with one Combo, if your unlucky! And then people say Scarlet(China Doll Boss) is impossible to beat so the game is broken, She's hard, but she's not Impossible to beat if you use the knife in her and attack her legs!! Also having the Cult Members from the film doesn't ruin the game for me by having Human Enemies..Synopsis game starts very 'Jacobs Ladder'ish with Alex escapes his restraints after Pyramid Head goes mad and kills everybody in a Hospital!!! Alex wakes up in a truck as it was just a dream, or was it? Alex is returning home from the Army problem is nearly all the people in town have disappeared including his brother and his Mothers acting strangley, you don't go to Silent Hill till much later in the game.. Combat wise the knife is over-powered and probably the best weapon in the game, not including the Laser Gun you get from the "No Dogs allowed' endings which is found in 'Alex's brother Josh's bedroom in the new game play through.. Boss's luckily do little damage (except Scarlett) but some are frustrating to get near, especially the Centipede type thing made from female Torso's.. The last boss is incredibly easy with a gun, infuriating with melee weapons!!! Your only able to hold very limited Ammo for the guns but it is survival horror!!The five endings can be gotten quickly by saving in the Prison before 'Alex's Mother' when she ask you to kill her, effects the ending, and saving again in the Church by the Confessional Pew and if you decide to forgive 'Alex's Father' or damn him to "whatever hell awaits him", again saving 'Wheeler' also effects two endings UFO and Pyramid Head..Being incredibly depressing and the amount of tneedless backtracking would diminish replay value a but. Myself I got the 1000g the hard play through with the laser gun is fun, I'm giving my copy to a friend who's a big ilent Hill fan

Silent Hill: Homecoming is the epitome of how a game in the survival horror genre should be played. The finite resources your character comes across (gun ammunition and health items), diversity of enemies, somewhat infrequent save points, and eerie story were all conscious inclusions made by the developing team which makes the game so fun to play. What I especially liked about Homecoming is the melee combat system. As you progress through the game you come across different weapons such as a knife, steel pipe, and axe. My immediate thought was to ditch the "weaker" weapon such as the knife for the "stronger" weapon such as the axe. What a mistake. Enemies in Homecoming all have different speeds, attack patterns, damage output, hits they can take etc, and it's your job as the player to decide what "tool" for the job you wish to use. If you want to mindlessly blast the enemy away with the shotgun or rifle, be prepared to pay for it later. Ammunition in Homecoming is a precious and finite resource that should only be used to take out stronger enemies in most (but not all) situations. Besides, it's much more satisfying to decapitate an enemy after a well fought battle than shooting them from far away. Right? No? Okay go back to playing Call of Duty kid...Some people might want to complain that the save points are too few and far between. Well, no duh. It's a survival horror folks, you can't just save the game every five minutes. Instead you need to cautiously battle enemies, collect precious med kits, solve puzzles, and pray that the next save point is around the corner. Silent Hill is all about creating a thrilling scary atmosphere and the mere sight of the "save symbol" should act as a relief toward the player. The last topic I'll touch on is the story. I won't reveal spoilers, or any of the plot for that matter. Instead I just want to say that it's compelling, includes a lot of foreshadowing, and overall makes you want to complete the game. Basically, it's the opposite of other survival horror games such as Dead Space. In Dead Space all I want to do is shoot stuff, the story is completely inconsequential.Overall, the only thing I would change about the game would be to include a 180 degree turn feature.

Silent Hill games ahve always been a favourite of mine, particularly Silent Hill 2 which is a classic. So I was expecting great things of this game. However, I am a little disappointed by the game. It is incredibly easy on easy mode and, to be honest not much harder, on hard mode. All the usual enemies are there plus some good new ones. I love the nurses, especially as they come equipped with scalpels which can be lethal. Some of the newer monsters are good, particularly the 'smog' which I found one of the hardest to defeat. There are 4 bosses to defeat and they are not that hard. Infact the final boss was really easy. I had stored up ammo and was able to defeat it with relatively little effort,a big disappointment. However if you don't use guns, or dont have any ammo left then it is a different matter. There are a few puzzles to solve but not many as this is more like an action game than a puzzle game. Most of the puzzle are easy to solve, though one or two, particularly the 2nd fuse box puzzle, are very annoying. The story is OK if a little cliched. More religious mumbo jumbo which gets a little tiresome after a while. There are the usual alternate endings which can be achieved depending on the choices you make in the game, though having played through the game once it is difficult to imagine playing throught it 5 times to get a different ending. You do get extra costunes and some better weapons, but again are you going to do play it over and over again for this. The big disappointment though is the graphics and sound. It looks good but not great. I have a high def TV and to be honest it doesn't make a lot of difference. Considering the poweer of the XBOX 360 I would have thought that they could done better. Also the atmosphere is a little lacking. It just doesn't seem as spooky as I have come to expect. The characters don't seem as deep and interesting as in other games, particularly Silent Hill 2.All in all a good but not great game which should have been so much better. Let's hope the next one does the business.

Firstly im tired of hearing flak about this game, okay so no it isn't quite as good as silent hill 2, but it really isn't as far from that as people say.Okay so the story is the weakest element of the game which is frankly the only reason silent hill 2 is ahead at this point, but it really isn't bad at all, in fact its perfect for what it is, which is a whole new installment of silent hill, one that moves forward in the franchise, the cutscenes are intriguing, the detail of your characters face is the most detailed and haunted face I have seen on the xbox 360 (somehow managing to top "mass effect 2" despite being older) and the ability to choose dialogue options is a nice but subtle touch.Okay so your wondering about the graphics, they are scary good with emphasis on the SCARY part, when you see a splicer coming at you from the end of a dark hallway seeing its shadow loom over you, as it passes the beautifully ugly rusted walls, you will probably need a new change of undearwear, or three. There isn't any part of the game that dosen't seem completely beautiful, or should i say completely disgusting and horryfying. The sound is even better than the graphics, if that is possible, the quick scurry of bugs on the floor, the cracks, and creaks in the background, the bone crunching phycotic noise of the nurses when they find you, it all adds up to something that will get your head and stay there, this isn't a game to give to a 5 year old.The atmosphere and gameplay, go hand in hand the new emphasis on more combat has been critisced but unrightly so, dodging an attack by a lurker hiding in the shallow water, before decapting its ugly head with a fire axe is as much fun to see as it is to control. In short if you like survival horror, (and have nerves of steel) then I would strongly urge you to pick this game up, no it is not Silent hill 2, but it is still sheer brilliance!!

i thought after seeing some of the negative comments i thought i would mention this.this game doesn't at all focus on the action, nor at any point will it be a good idea to even try focusing on using mele all the time, this game is a silent hill game no matter what people say and it has all the aspects of a original silent hill game, people think this game is action based because of the start of sequence because it is simple based start of teaching you the basics and how to do things, silent hill home coming starts of differently to most silent hill games because of the fact you get put straight into the nightmare and it goes for a unique introduction.if your a die hard silent hill fan,you have to at least play past the nightmare sequence to actually find out its exactly like the old silent hills and you will eventually get delved into a really good and interesting plot, i have played all the silent hills and at first i was like meh to this and so was most people at first but when you take a proper go and push on a little this game can become seriously addicting and feel exactly like your run of a mill silent hill game.this is game is a bit slow with the nightmare sequence and it does force you to use mele a little on that section but besides that going around and using weapons on every enemy coming your way is suicide or st waist full, and though i say that you will have to fight some enemies sometimes but its usually boss battles or just enemies blocking certain things and that's it.and also last ting to mention, if you really think this is action and hasn't got any puzzles... pass the nightmare section and you will be required to do so much and to solve all these amazing puzzles.so i say1. play past the nightmare section before hating on the game, its clear most people haven't even bothered to try progressing properly.2. buy this game and enjoy it3.have fun =D

`Silent Hill: Homecoming' is the latest game in the survival horror series and introduces a new character named Alex Shepherd who returns home to Shepherd's Green and to Silent Hill to find his lost brother Josh.I've been a huge fan of the series since the first one on the Playstation 10 years ago (is it really that long ago!?) and just couldn't wait to play this one so I imported it a few months ago and have just gotten round to finishing it. My first impressions were very, very good - it has all the charm of the old ones such as the haunting music, the foggy streets, the twisted monsters and the blood-curdling sound effects. The story is pretty good too and the characters are all well designed. The graphics are fantastic and although they are in HD and are very detailed and realistic, it still manages to keep the original grainy feel to it that made the originals so creepy. The gameplay is pretty much the same as before where you have to lead your character through various sections of Silent Hill and Shepherd's Green such as the hospital, cemetery, sewers, a hotel etc and solve puzzles, collect items and battle enemies, but the one thing that really lets this game down is that the developers have concentrated a lot on the combat side of things as there is a lot of bashing nasties with a metal pole or an axe, and let's face it, Silent Hill has never been great for the fighting sections and it hasn't at all been improved here (other than the shooting, which has been improved a little bit).Overall this is a great addition to the series and is one that any fan of Silent Hill should get into as soon as possible. If the rumours are true that this is going to be delayed for even longer in the UK, the US copy of the game is region free so I'd import it now to save waiting.
