I bought this as a travel game to keep my girls amused on holiday. It's nicely made, smoothly finished in a pale wood as shown. You throw the dice and flip down the wooden number tabs according to the numbers you've rolled on the dice, and try to get the box shut in the fewest possible moves, The lid will only close when all the number tabs are down. It requires some basic arithmetic, but appeals to all ages and can be quite competitive. The problem is that the lid doesn't stay closed unless you store it in the cardboard sleeve in which it comes. If the lid opens of its own accord, there is a strong risk you'll lose the dice, and then the game is useless.I don't know whether the larger size comes with some kind of a catch or also relies on being packed away, however for this smaller size which is so likely to be used for travel, it should definitely have a catch.

I purchased this pocket sized game to take on a long car journey to keep my 8 year old amused and to give him an ipad 'square eyes' break whilst on the way to our holiday. The game was really easy to learn, simply roll the dice and work out if you have enough numbers still standing to make the dice number, and not just my son but all the family (even our fussy 19 year old) had a go and enjoyed it. The only reason I gave it a 4 and not a 5 is that the numbers are really fiddly and you need small fingers to flick them down or they all fall down, but that really is being super fussy of me and was only one of those 'for goodness sake' moments every now and again. I'd definitely recommend it,not least because it gives kids a break from electronic visuals but it's also a great way to get maths into a fun little game!

I baught this for my children to play in the car and on holiday. The dice are tiny but they can be rolled into the box and so don't drop on the car floor. The older ones (10 & 12) can manage to play in the car, the younger ones (4 & 7)love to play it in the house. It is so simple you, think too simple, but quickly become addicted and the thrill when you put all the numbers down still lights up everyones face.Even better is the fact that you only need 2 dice to play and if you loose them dice are easy to come by. No way of loosing the other bits as they are attached and the dice fit in the box when it is shut so keeping them safe is easy. This pocket version is ideal for travel.Enough to say welike this game.

A nicely made little game. I chose it as it has a lid and some of the bigger ones dont. Easy to learn and play. Small - so will be perfect to travel with. Problem is its a bit boring after a while. Also if you have big hands it may be too small for you..Simple game. Throw 2 dice. decide what doors to close. Throw again, decide again, untill there are no available options. add up score. next players turn. We manage 10 to 15 minutes before getting bored and moving on to something else

Wow! If you told kids to learn how to do number bonds they'd hate you ... My 7 and 5 year old really like this and so do I! There's enough of an element of chance with the dice rolling for the younger one not to be too aggrieved when he can't go anymore, but at the same time he gets to show off his number skills . In fact, that sentiment goes for all of us! It seems quite solidly made, but small enough to fit into a rucksack for holiday. I think this is a very clever little toy.

We have played this game sometimes for hours. We’ve played this with both adults and children - and the grandchildren too love playing it very competitively. It’s such a simple game - concept fantastic - a wooden box with numbers and dice but it’s one game that is always reached for first in the cupboard. It’s not only fun to play but teaches plenty of maths skills like addition and number bonds ... and the kids don’t even realise it ! Can’t recommend this game highly enough.

Great game, very well made, appropriately packed, delivered as promised. Two small improvements would be worthwhile:1) The playing area of the box should be lined with felt to absorb the sound of the dice when rolled, and to improve the appearance of the box.2) A small catch, hook style or magnetic, should be added to secure the lid in the closed position to avoid it opening accidentally and loosing the contents when handling or storing.Otherwise, excellent!

We had two shut the boxes for christmas a bigger one and this small one. Initialy i thought the size was too small but it is great for taking out and about. The children and adults in the extended family love it and get very competitive trying to shut the box - and the chldren dont realise it is helping with their mental maths - Brilliant. my 10 and 5 year olds love it and their cousins 13, 10 and 8 years love it so much i am going to have to buy them one too.

I wasn't sure which size "shut the box" to get but wanted something portable as we love to play games with the kids when we're waiting for our meals in restaurants and on holiday etc. This size is perfect and a great price. My 6 year old loves adding or subtracting the numbers and uses the dots on the dice to count. There are instructions with the game as there are a few different ways to play. We love it and think it is great value for money.

Simple but addictive game. A real classic - just wish I'd known about it when I was a kid. Good for both solitaire or playing competitively. It's nice and compact and easy to pack so my 7 year-old and I have played it in airports, restaurants, queues for the last year. Great fun - there's something very satisfying about playing it - but great for speeding up mental arithmetic. We've now bought it as gifts for several other friends.

Bought for my granddaughter. Excellent and very quick game for children of all ages. You will quickly notice a huge improvement in their mental maths and the speed of their calculations. I always allow the children to keep score, this also improves their writing and numbers. Good for children to pLay in the car or for travelling, in restaurants while waiting for your food etc. We also have the full sized version of this game.

I have ordered several of these travel games over the years, the first was for my son, the rest as gifts. Perfect for taking on holiday and long car trips, as it is small and lightweight. Superb for mental arithmetic. I do wrap a thick elastic around it to stop the lid opening in my son's bag as we have lost the cardboard box it came in. Children and adults all seem to enjoy this game wherever we take it. Highly recommended.

Nice small travel game. Great for improving children's numeracy too. Would recommend for 4or 5 up at the youngest but great for older children. Only negative is unlike our old plastic one there is no built in scoring line (which also helped build up numeracy skills). Should also note dice are very small so easy to mislay. Generally a good fun traditional game in a useful travel size.

This miniature version of shut the box is the ideal size for my 8 year old daughter and you can close the lid with the dice inside to make it an easy travelling game. Great for mental arithmetic practise for my daughter in a fun format choosing various ways to make up the value of the dice in a strategic way to shut the box. Her best score so far is 4! Great quality.

What a great little game, simple to use and suitable for all ages. Took on holiday and kept the children (and adults amused) ages ranging from 12 years to 50 years. The lid does not have a clip to stop it opening, but a simple band wrapped around kept it secure, not a problem. If you're trying to find a simple game, for all ages to play, then this is the one for you.
