Road cycling cleats are engineered to wear out over time. And, SPD-SL cleats have several very handy indicators built into them to tell you when you need to replace them. As my initial set of SPD-SL cleats neared their end I picked up these replacements to have on hand. They are a spot on match to the cleats that came with my pedals and are of excellent quality in my opinion.SPD-SL cleats are nice in that they have built in pods to help with walking. I had previously tried LOOK cleats/pedals and found them to be a walking hazard on smooth surfaces. Not to mention they easily got dirty which affected the smooth float of the cleats. SPD-SL fixes some of these issues by keeping the smooth surface of the cleat elevated away from walking surfaces. If you walk through mud you're still going to get them dirty, but smooth surfaces or black top won't pose much of a problem anymore. As I mentioned earlier SPD-SL cleats have built in indicators for when they need to be replaced. The one I recall off the top of my head is several marking lines along the two little pods in the back. As you walk on these those pods will slowly (or not so slowly) wear down. When you get to the last line it's time to replace them as much more wear and you'll be scraping the smooth surface of the cleat on the ground. The yellow cleats allow some side to side float so that your foot is not locked into a single position. I find that this is ideal for me as it is gentler on my knees. The serious racers out there will probably prefer the red cleats which have no float and so you do not lose energy in side to side motion. At my current rate of use it looks like I'll be going through about one set of cleats every year to year and a half. This seems to hold pretty true to how long it takes me to wear out a chain/rear cassette. All in all I'm very happy with my switch to SPD-SL. I do recommend though extending the life of your cleats by purchasing some "cleat covers." These are cleat specific covers which fit over the cleat and protect them while you are walking. I used a set with these cleats at last year's MS150 as I walked on dirt, grass, mud, etc... They kept most of the crud off of my cleats providing a better riding experience as I hit the trail again.

My beloved Time RXS pedals failed (cracked the composite body) and, driven by budget concerns, I bought Shimano 105 pedals some years ago. The 105s are definitely heavier but have lasted longer. The best part is Shimano's cleat design. My old cleats were worn beyond recognition yet there was no loss of performance. Clicking in remained positive; release was consistent; float was unaffected. These cleats also offer a lot of variation in placement and alignment. Not an issue to me; my preferred placement is neutral front-to-back, side-to-side, and rotationally on both pedals, but those with leg or foot issues or preferring a more rearward cleat position may find the 105s easier to dial in.Walking is relatively secure; covers are available but I've not found the need. The large heads on the mounting bolt add stiffness to the pedal-shoe interface but the 4 mm allen heads love to trap grit and debris that has to be picked out before the bolts can be removed. Tip: I use marine-grade anti-seize on nearly all bike fasteners, including my pedal cleat bolts. Overall I like the performance of my Shimano pedals and love the performance of my Shimano cleats.

I just replaced my Shimano cleats (finally). Frankly, what took me so long. I had become used to my foot slipping around in the cleat, difficulty getting in and out of the cleats, foot coming out of the cleat on occassion and finally had enough. Wow! putting these new cleats on was like getting an entirely new cycling experience. Very very happy with fresh cleats. I also looked at the other reviews and my experience with these cleats. Seems that the fact is they are great when they are in good condition. So I am now conciously trying to not walk on them. Along with this purchase I bought cleat covers, which I have never used before. Carrying them in my back pocket and putting them on and off is a new habit I am working on.Hopefully that will extend the life of the cleats. Just for the record, I live in the Virgin Islands, ride 1-2hours most days and got about 2 years of life out of my last set. The roads here are rough and I probably walked too much on them on and off roads. One of my friends here covers his Shimano cleats religiously. They look like new and he has been riding them for years happily.

Likes1. i like the that this cleat has a broad base, i feel like i can pull harder when i climb than with the SHIMANO SH51 Bike Cleats2. i feel less pressure/hot spots than i did with the SHIMANO SH51 Bike Cleats3. This clips offers three types that have different levels of float (foot movement) when clipped in, i like the yellow which offer the most float.if you have been using SHIMANO SH51 Bike Cleats and the pedals that go with them that allow you to clip in on both sides, you will have to get use to the fact that the pedals that work with these cleats are one sided clip ins. These cleats can take a little longer to get positioned correctly so you may need to do a couple of test fits/ridesto get them where you want them if you suffer from your toes going numb during rides. Also these clips need to be replace more frequently than the SHIMANO SH51 Bike Cleats due to the material difference (plastic v metal). However you can easily get 2000 miles out of these cleats, i have done 5000 on a pair but then one broke on a climb so i don't suggest going that far on them.

I have used this type of cleat for about five years. It took a little getting used to but once I did I will not go back to regular pedals or sturrup straps.Word of warning: When starting out PRACTICE using the cleats in a parking lot until the turn-out release becomes a reflex.I have used sturrup straps since the 60s and now see a definite safety advantage using cleats.I ride a Bacchetta Giro 26 with an average ride between 14 and 20 miles. I ride roads and metro traffic. On a "high rider" recumbent I get push and pull action on the pedals. This is a definate plus for fast acceleration.Purchase cleat covers to extend the life of the cleats. Plan on purchasing a set at least once a season; more often if you do not use covers. These cleats are hard plastic and will need to be replaced as the become more difficult to release.I keep a second set on the shelf.Thank you for a great product!

As bike cleats these are top notch - work very well, easy to fit, easy to clip in and out etc.....BUT as much as I tried they just don't make you float! I couldn't float one degree never mind the 6 degrees advertised! I tried several approaches to aid floatation -1. stand in the middle of a busy high street with arms outstretched ala David Blaine or Dynamo2. On a bouncy castle - cleats burst castle - ruined my cousin Robert Bob Robertson's birthday party (I pointed out at 36 he is too old to have a bouncy castle but he just had a paddy and ran to his room)3. Shouted 'wingardium leviosa' at the top of my lungs until a PCSO came to ask me to stop4. Did a MASSIVE jump from the top of a child's climbing frame - resulted in severe 'barking'to my shin. All in all very disappointed by the lack of floatation....... I have contacted my MP but don't hold out much hope....

I'll be honest I've never used cleated shoes/pedals before I decided to buy these for my road bike, but I instantly got on with them- they're easy to fit, easy enough to clip-in (tho the pedal does need to be the right way up which seems to delay me slightly compared to other riders I go out with) and easy enough to quickly un-clip when you need to. I've basically had nothing but good experience with them thus far, and have been using them now for about 4 months. They also boast a big surface are compared to their types of cleat; this being a factor that persuaded me to purchase them in the first place. The other being their very competitive price- based on that alone- if your on the marker for a setup that's cheap, reliable, and easy to use and are not overly bothered about weight then these are top dollar!

My shipment arrived on time and the package was in good condition. Having owned a previous pair I really like these cleats. They included all the hardware and are adjustable to different positions. My last pair were chewed up by walking on different terrains due to closed roads. With that said, these are not a low profile cleat so walking on them isn't easy, recommended or comfortable. I do like the option to purchase cleat covers. I have not purchased or used the cleat covers as I never prepare to walk a lot when out on a ride. I do not have anything negative to say but a recommendation, I think they should offer detailed instructions on recommended positions. This will help new cyclist to purchase these on the fly rather than going into a cycle shop.

If you go on club rides a lot, get cleat covers for walking into stores for snacks and more drinks. If you ride where there are a lot of traffic lights, and you ride 1000 miles or more a year, you will go through 2 sets of these.Clicking in and out a lot and walking around without cleat covers will do these in quickly. When you hear a strange squeaking sound and it's not your bike, it's these cleats telling you to replace them.I wish Shimano would sell longer screws. I have a shim to even out a shorter leg, and the screws that come with these are too short. Local Bike Store was able to provide them. And now I've said way too much about cleats.

I bought these for a used bike I bought that had Shimano Ultegra 6800 road pedals. After looking at the selection available in road shoes I sold the pedals & clips on craigslist. Then bought Shimano's flip over pedals flat one side SPD clips on the other. And ordered Shimano Mtn bike shoes. I already have Keen Commuter ll SPD sandals, but they're heavy.I ride for touring and need to walk around when I get there. But it's nice to clip in sometimes when riding the aero bars.It looks weird, a Fuji carbon fiber bike with a seat that has a big white "WTB" on it for Wilderness Trail Bike. But I'm going for distance not for speed.

I'm no expert when it comes to cleats as these were only my send pair; however, I have enjoyed using these immensely. Initially it took a little to get use to and I couldn't "click in" very quickly when getting away, particularly when under pressure - However after a little settling in time I have become much more confident when using these and they find their target quickly and with only a little thought needed.Others have said that these wear quickly - I have not seen much wear on mine but I don't walk around in them much - instead I normally carry a light pair of trainers for when I want to walk around.

These are the standard Shimano cleats that wear out and you unbolt the old ones and replace them with these. The only issue is the screws that hold them on. They come with short screws and mine need a longer screw ... I think they come with 8mm screws and I need a 10 mm for my Sidi shoes. Ultimately I found some out of a bike shop in LA (Jensen) -- $4 for screws $4 for shipping... Or if you are a true sport you can get the Titanium screws for $10 each! My old cleats were held on with a collection of hardware from various sources ... screws need to be tightened every so often. But enough about screws ...

Started with yellow coded cleats but switched to these after gained confidence using this type of cleat. Quite easy to install on road cycling shoes. Exercise caution with position of cleat on shoe, if not adjusted to fit your individual cycling motions, could experience muscle fatigue in foot or knees. Made of plastic so keep spare set handy since "plant" foot cleat wears out much faster. Cleats come as set. There are 3 different sets available - only difference is amount of float cleat has in clipless pedal, yellow has most float, blue less float, red has no float.

I really do like my Ultegra SPD-SL pedals and cleats much better than the Looks I used previously, mostly because you can actually walk on the cleats without slipping and breaking your neck. However, they do wear out over time and need to be replaced. It is worth it to me to get the Shimano brand cleats. This is one of those cases where it is worth it to get the genuine article - I won't risk having a no-name cleat break on me just to save a couple of bucks. I am knocking off a star because I just think that $20-$25 is a little more than they should cost.

Great shimano workmanship. I use them mostly for cycling to work with. I have used these a couple of days each week for about three months now and they don’t show hardly any sign of wear. One trip I unfortunately slashed a tyre 4 miles from home and had to complete the long and lonely walk home, the cleats were comfortable and again did not show much sign of wear. I would highly recommend these. Don’t buy cheaper imitations, you get what you pay for, but these are a fantastic item and a reasonable price
