I purchased this freewheel to replace the 14-28T Falcon freewheel that came on my Mongoose Hitch fat tire bike. The bike really needed a lower gear and the Shimano MF-TZ31 provided this with the big 34T cog. Also, the Falcon freewheel was noisy coasting, making a growling/droning noise, and when pedaling, making nasty clanking sounds in gears 3-5. I think the Falcon was defective - there was a lot of play in the bearings - seemed almost like some of the ball bearings might have been missing, and/or the races were oversized. Not very good quality control. Anyway, the Shimano freewheel was a vast improvement - quiet, and shifting smoothly... even through that big 24 - 34 cog jump.My understanding is the Tourney TX derailleur that came on the bike was designed to accommodate this freewheel. This change made the Hitch feel like a quality bike instead of a piece of junk. I find I would really like a gear between 24 and 34, though (28T), and something smaller than 14... ideally 11T for high gearing. I wish Shimano made something like this. I see there are other manufacturers who do, and I eventually may try one of those. For now, though, I am delighted at the improvement, and enjoying going up hills without straining.

The Shimano Megarange Freewheel is fantastic for getting up hills when limited by a 40/52 double chainring set. As my previous freewheel was already starting to fail, this was a $14.00 replacement vs. $150+ to replace the crank and bottom bracket to get a smaller small chainring (and even more expensive to get a triple). The only problem was that my derailleur was not long enough and would rub on the megasprocket while I was on the second sprocket. While I rode about 600 miles in this state, I ended up ordering a long travel derailleur ($40), but I still feel this was a good purchase considering the range of gears on the bike would only have been possible with a 32/52 chainring in the front. With a 28-14 freewheel, you would end up with a dead zone between 13.5 and 15.5 mph.In short: If you have a long travel derailleur, or you're willing on replacing it vs. the crank, this is a good buy. The freewheel screws on straight, has no wobble, and for about 1000 miles has given me no problems.Update:3000 miles and still going strong. Just finished a hilly 400 km brevet and the 34 tooth sprocket was a life-saver.

I recently installed this 34T freewheel on an old (1988) road bike to get a granny low gear for one very steep hill. It works well, I'm happy with it. I believe the sprocket sizes are: 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24 and 34 teeth. The sprockets are all steel. The freewheel is very quiet when coasting. Gears 2 through 7 shift smoothly and quietly. The 2-1 downshift (24t to 34t) is a big jump, so it is less smooth. It works best to downshift from 2 to 1 before you need heavy pedal force.I also installed an inexpensive ($16 on sale) Shimano (Nexus?) Megarange derailleur to handle the 34 tooth sprocket, as my road derailleur could only handle a maximum of around 28 teeth.I was surprised that the shift order on the Megarange derailleur is reversed compared to the previous road derailleur. That isn't much of a problem with downtube shifters, the 7 speed SIS indexing still works well. That might be a problem with some STI shifters, something to consider if you need to change derailleurs.

This freewheel is exactly as it should be; sturdy, efficient, and cheap. I do bike delivery in a moderately hilly city, so I need to be able to climb steep inclines regularly, and I put hundreds of miles on my bike every week. I chose this range for it's versatility, and I have not been disappointed. The 14 tooth gives plenty of power for the flats and descents, and the 34 tooth eats the worst hills in my city for breakfast. While it is useful for particularly steep hills, the 34 tooth is too big for most typical inclines, so you may be better off with the 14-28T Tourney if you don't have many major hills to deal with. This thing has taken some abuse since I got it, and it hasn't shown any wear yet.I am very satisfied with this purchase, and would recommend it to anyone who has to climb nasty hills.

I have an old twelve speed 27"X1 1/4" bicycle from Montgomery Wards I bought about thirty years ago. I am on my third rear wheel that I had to replace due to broken spokes but was still using the same freewheel until it started slipping in the higher gears going about eighteen or twenty MPH.I had also ordered a new derailleur and rear wheel along with a freewheel remover tool.Everything arrived in one box except the rear wheel so I tried the freewheel on the existing wheel. I was surprised that the seven gear freewheel worked with the old wheel and derailleur. I had to install a thick flat washer to keep the chain from rubbing on the frame. Took a ride and everything is great. Can't wait until Wednesday to tackle some hills.

Great set of gears, really easy to install on my new rim. Went with the mega-range after a fully loaded self supported tour through the mountains of western virginia, wish I had it before as the extra range this provides makes the steep hills with a heavy load much easier. Had one issue when I received this, right out of the box, two of the teeth were bent on the largest gear. Contacted the seller and had a new one on my door step in two days (faster than the original). The second one was perfect. I give lots of credit to Larry's Bicycles for such fast service on making things right. Would definitely do business with them again with such great customer service.

I have a 70's vintange Schwinn mountain bike that had a 5 speed rear gear set. This bike was made when mountain bikes were a new big deal. Back then, bikes were made differently and this required a little ingenuity to get the frame spread a touch and shim the axel. But after an evening in the garage, I was able to retrofit my anchient beast and replace the chain. With some minor limit adjustments, it was soon shifting smoothly, better than ever. I bought it for the extra low gear and that alone was worth it. I now have a 7 speed rear gear instead of 5 and my old pal is ready for another decade of abuse.

This thing is awesome! Goes on easy with proper tool. The MegaRange gear adds a new range of gears to your ride. I believe that the rest of the gear may be better suited to hills as well. Once installed, I am able to conquer hills that were previously not possible. There is a big drop when going into the large gear, but it is no big deal. Just slow your peddling and resume once you have dropped down. You will get used to it sooner than you think. The large gear also makes it so you can take hills in larger gears on the front. If you have a freewheel and any hills, Get this!

Taming the Fat bike equipped with the wrong gears at the factory. I replaced the stock freewheel on my Mongoose Hitch with this mega-range gear set to turn it into what is was suppose to be "a trail bike". This freewheel will give you a good group of six core gears that you will spend most of your time in and that special gear your be glad you have when going up a steep hill or across soft sand. The transition from 2nd to 1st gear is smooth and fast just when you need it keeping that forward motion over what ever lay in your path.

My husband used this and Dimension Freewheel Spoke Protector 34 tooth (also purchased thru Amazon) as part of his upgrade of an older 1991 Trek 930. Used Park Tool FR3 (also purchsed from Amazon) freewheel puller to remove older Suntour free wheel which had issues (broken teeth). All in all rebuild was easy and went well using the right tools and right replacements. His older mountain bike once again performing like new, actually better with lower grear range than before. Re-use, rebuild, repair, DIY and save!

I have a Schwinn mountain bike that I purchased, and while doing research, several bicycle forums suggested adding the Mega Low gear freewheel. It is crazy the difference this makes in climbing steep hills, so much simpler! You will need to order the flywheel removal tool in order to change this part. It took me about 15 minutes to change, and you then have to adjust the rear derailer to compensate for the larger new gear. There are several tutorials online that explain exactly how that adjustment is done.

Had it installed by my LBS , went from a lazy hill climber, to being like a brand new bike and great on the hills now , My first impression is this is a great item , well worth the money . and before and after photo . 5 month's after installation , and 10 miles a day average in that time , still going strong , one issue I have a little rumble , but I'm sure a little maintenance would straighten it out have not done any since I installed it it's been that good .

The granny gear on this 6 speed cassette allows for easier access to steep gradients that the standard gears do not - with my level of fitness. The cassette is easy to replace and requires no resetting of the back deraileur. There is a big jump between the two lowest gears so a very low speed is required before engaging the granny gear.On an 18 speed MTB this extra low gear makes it capable of climbing the same gradients as as a 28 speed MTB

I bough it along with Shimano Tourney TX35 Rear Derailleur these sweet couple work like a charm. Mega range cog is magic, or bike on steroids whatever you call it. The only problem it is the big step down from mega range cog to the next smaller cog, but it shifts nice and fast. If you looking for regular stepped gears, then spend more bucks to upgrade 9-speed cassette + everything you'll need along (8-speed cassette has the same problem).

Very happy with the value and performance of this product. Used it to upgrade my 5 speed freewheel on my B'twin city bike for my ride with my daughter from St Leonards on Sea to Paris. It performed flawlessly and that, plus the rapid last-minute delivery, made the trip possible (that megagear helped me get up the steepest of hills, even with front and rear panniers loaded with travel and camping equipment for two!)
